Connecticut and the whole northeast is a wonderful place to hike in. not only do they have great trails but the charm of these small towns throughout the northeast. just make you wonder what it must of been like 100, 200, 300 years ago. Connecticut does disappoint. the night before i put a little tower of power hiking trip together. being from a small town in NY i could wait to start my little weekend trip. we tried to hike to 7 towers, 2 museum's and a water fall in two day. we could only do 5 tower because 2 were closed. our third stop was New Gate. i didn't read up on the cooper mine before i set off to see the site. just thought it look cool from the pictures i saw on google map. as you can see this must of been a site to see in its hay day. but once you get inside and start reading the information signs you start to get wowed. then you have a pretty awesome overlooking and i said to my son with a view like that i wouldn't mine being in prison here. but after taking the tour of the mines and how they were used as a prison. you knew this wasn't a place you wanted to be. even when George Washington want to send the worst offenders someplace he sent them here. the holding areas in the mines became known as "Hell". all this started 372 years ago when the found cooper in 1705 and in 1707 is when the dug a vertical shaft and tunneling horizontally. tho the cooper mines never turn a profit it stay open until it became and prison in 1773. the first prisoner John Hinson, crime burglary, committed in 1773 and escaped in 1774. it stayed a prison until 1827. in the 1830's & 1850's reopen as a cooper mine but both time stilled fail to turn a profit. since the 1860's to the present it has been a tourist attraction. i commend Connecticut for cherishing their history. if you want to follow my trip the next stop was Trolley Museum. the whole trip made for a great weekend. in order: these were the stop we made in case you would like to try it. (Mount Tom, Haystack Mountain, New Gate Cooper Mine & Prison, Trolley Museum, Soap Stone Mountain, Talcott Mountain, Sleeping Giant State Park, Roaring Brook Falls)
