REVIEWS OF Mark Twain House & Museum IN Connecticut

Jennifer McInnis

Went for the first time today. $20 ea to get general admission, more if you want a personalized tour. Our tour guide was great, very knowledgeable and she encouraged questions. The house is unique, restored nicely but not fully, work in progress for the last 25yrs but still worth seeing. This isn't really for kids, not much for them and you can't touch anything inside the house. The grounds are beautiful and what has been rehabbed is beautiful

Marcia Wagner

All I can say is phenomenal!! In scale it does not compare to the Cottages in Rhode Island but in warmth and detail drew me much closer to the Persona of Samuel Clemens then I had imagined. Can't wait to do it again. Also loved the gift shop

Fran Guertin

Interesting. I learned a lot about an American icon. We took the tour with Mrs Clenens, she was excellant.

Jason Lowder

Awesome tour, not a history buff but the tour in character made it well worth taking, i might even take it again with a different character. Super cool ... learned alot.

Florencia Basaldella

The house is beautiful, I had a very nice guide. Totally worth the money. Also, check out the gift shop, they have many editions of Mark Twain's books and other merchandise as well

LOVE I ONE

This house is American history!! It's absolutely stunning, the grand workmanship and details of furniture is awesome. Not to mention thinking about author Mark Twain and how he must have enjoyed this beautiful property. I can see how the house allowed Mark Twain to rest and provided inspiration for book's he wrote. I highly recommend visiting the Mark Twain House.

Steve Kuker

Cool place, not 100 percent original, and you can't take photos

Melissa Freeman

We visited the Mark Twain house in Hartford with some friends. I really didn’t know what to expect and was, quite honestly, not sure whether I would enjoy it. I was very, very wrong. Samuel Clemens a.k.a. Mark Twain, Was certainly an interesting character. His life was full. Some sadness, some devotion some inspiration. His home, now a museum, was decorated with period furniture and the tours were guided by live actors and actresses bringing the entire experience to life.

Jerry Tidd

A must see for anyone visiting Connecticut. $20 tour, and you can easily spend 2-3 hours here. And if you have time and interest afterwards, walk next door and use your admission ticket stub for $3 off the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center.

Sean Rowan

Went on the theatrical tour so well done and informative. Really enjoyed it.

ARUP DUTTAROY

Nicely kept house... The museum tour was very informative and the movie on Mark Twain's life was informative too... A must visit place in Hartford CT...

Garrick Infanger

Wonderful architecture, history, and tour. This turned out to be much more interesting than I expected and it kept everyone in our group intrigued.

Mark Fulcher

Fun experience and educational. Enjoyed the folks leading the tours.

Linda Bilodeau

It's beautiful and historic and fun. Mark Twain is a national treasure.

Patricia Flowers

Beautiful guided tour of Mark Twain's home. Highly recommended, also if you're Military is free until Labor Day. ❤

Kitty Slaughter

Super interesting house - definitely take the tour with one of the "people" of the house! Makes for entertaining fun and it's highly informative.

Erik S

The beautiful house of one of the Greatest Americans who ever lived.

Andrew Terlizzi

Great hidden little gem in Hartford! Really enjoyed the home tour as well as the museum next door. Very informative movie also provided. The furnishings inside are really interesting. The stories shared by our friendly tour guide made the tour even better! Definitely recommend spending a couple hours here to learn about Mark Twain and his family!

Khanjari Joshi

It was great with all the history stuff but the house and especially the carpet was too dirty and bothered my throat the entire time I was there. I understand that the house needs to be 'preserved' but not to a point that it gives out a musty smell especially when there is money charged for it.

Joan Stearns

Very interesting tour. I hadn't remembered that Twain was actually from Hartford, and this is where he did a lot of his writing.

Rebecca

Very beautiful house and garden. Great day trip.

Doreen Maxwell

His REAL name was Samuel Clemens. I'm SO clever!

Bret Swalberg

Always enjoyed Mark Twain books, now I appreciate him more. A very well done museum. Our tour guide, Al, was phenomenal. Incredible knowledge base, polite, spirited, really a perfect tour guide. Nothing Ferguson about him ;) I do wish we could take photos inside at a few designated spots. But so glad we stopped in during our New EnglNd roadtrip.

William Krajcovic

Nice Historical Site for a quick visit! Whole place meticulously reconditioned!

Daryl Lucas

Well worth the trip. Tour of the house is informative and paced well. Museum is small but exhaustive.

Lynn Watters

You go through a small museum to get to this amazing home. The guide was very knowledgeable. We were not allowed to take pictures in the house because some of the things were on loan and the insurance company would not allow it. The foyer was done by Tiffany, the staircase is an optical illusion. There is an atrium with a 400 year old vine. The ceiling to floor mirror was a wedding gift We saw the actual desk where he sat and wrote some of his most famous books.

Linda Q

Loved the emersive tour where your tour guide plays the role of someone close to Mark Twain.

Donna Pemmitt

If you're a fan of East Lake style, which I am, this house will make your heart sing!

Red Snapper

I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the tour as much as I did. Very interesting architecture and history of the Clemens family.

Aubrey Antonucci

We really enjoyed this museum! The tour was informative without being boring and the guide was very knowledgeable. The house and grounds are lovely.

KAILEH PISTOL

Really wonderful museum, lots of information about his day to day life. The decorative arts are intriguing as is the artistic and scientific within the household decor and family values.

Greg Carroll

Clue event is afun & fabulous waytosee the house

Polly Ducey

Extensive detailed tour with curated information and access to Twains life and times.

Mikey T

My family is not interested in visiting this historic place. But as I'm a big admirer of Mark Twain, I really wanted to visit this spot. So, I rented a car and drove from NYC to Hartford, solely to visit the Mark Twain house. And, man, it was worth it! I absolutely loved the tour and it was so great to actually visit the place that was shaped by the vision of this phenomenal writer. Even though the exhibition that you can visit before entering the house, is interesting, it is the house itself that is really overwhelming. I think that even people who don't know his work will enjoy visiting this wonderful mansion. Its architecture, the beautiful interior, the magnificent design, ... It's just great!

Jennifer Lauren Reynolds

Visited with my parents and my SO's parents and we had a blast. We took the Butler Tour and it was amazing. The Butler was such a wonderful character, the actor who played him was excellent. But even a standard tour would have been incredible. The restoration of the house is breath taking. I loved all the beautiful wall paper and stenciling. I would highly recommend a visit here.

Lydia DePalma

It was very interesting learning about Mark Twain with a well organized, knowledgeable, and pleasant guided visit.

David Heise

Great information on the life of Mark Twain. Get there early to watch the 23 minute video before the tour.

dbot54

Fascinating. Beautifully restored. Excellent guides.

Lucio Bolognani

Tour guide was really good. He really made us feel how was like the life on the house at Mark Twain's time. Learned a lot

Shawn Henry

Excellent museum, displays, interesting history a d our guide was fabulous!! This is a place that is worth getting to know about America's most famous author. The guide brought to life Mr. Twain's life and literature and family life. The house where he loved was beautiful and well appointed with period antiques. Such an amazing and interesting place. Well worth the time and effort to go to if!!!

Maureen Sandford

The living history tour was fabulous. Learned so much about Mark Twain and our tour guide, Rev. Joseph Twichell, Twain's best friend that we plan to go again and take a tour with Mark Twain's butler, George!

Charlie Page

Interesting place for a midwesterner. The best Twain stuff is definitely out along the Mississippi, but if you're a big fan then it's worth a quick stop if you are in the area.

Michael Spinelli

Very informative and fascinating place. Highly recommended.

Mark Elliott

This elaborate Victorian house in the Nook Farm neighborhood of Hartford is a far cry from what I imagined the riverboat pilot, miner, and typesetter from Hannibal, Missouri might call home. The elaborate "Gilded Age" decor was, in large part, designed by Louis C. Tiffany & Co. (son of the founder of Tiffany & Co). The Nook Farm was an enclave of prominent artists, thinkers and activists, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose house is a stone's throw from the Clemens house, and which is also open to the public. The complex includes a museum, a theater (where they show a Ken Burns movie called "Mark Twain") and a café. Had I known beforehand the extent of the place I would have allowed at least a full day to explore. Our docent/guide was very well informed, conversant and articulate -- obviously passionate about her work. The tour is not inexpensive, but I wouldn't miss it for the world. I hope to return when I'm able to spend more time.

Gail Bailey

You pay $25 for a Living History Tour, $18 for a regular tour. I recommend you spend the extra. We loved her tour presentation! The house is well worth seeing. Call ahead to get the GPS for secure parking as it's in an area that looks a little rough.

Curtis Butler

This is a great place to visit even iff you are not a fan of reading. The house has some unique architecture and some interesting history of the area.

Cindy Castro

Very pleasant experience. Staff was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable. It was a perfect stop to pass the time before my flight out of Hartford. I learned so much and was taken aback by the architecture!

Kathy Totten

Beautifully restored with many of the pieces from the Clemens family. Great tour guide.

Mary Ivas

When you visit Mark Twain house you should buy a tour with a guide for certain time. An offered time was in 2 hours. I tried to join current tour and was turned down pronouncedly. Unfortunately during my appointed tour our guide (very knowledgeable) was mumbling so it was hard to understand contents. After this tour I made a second try to join another group and was in same manner strictly rejected. I couldn't tell if it's thoughtless policy or local guides test their local power on travelers.

Laurie Arshonsky

Exceeded all expectations! The house was decorated by Louis Comfort Tiffany and now totally restored. We took a tour with an actor representing Suzy Clemons which made the tour more interesting and personal. The Museum has audio aides and excellent displays. There is a cafe with delicious, affordable lunches. Be sure to watch the video first for whole to part learners!

Kolleen Long

Visited with my husband and two teens on Monday. Our guide ("Rev. Joe") included facts of Twain's life, peppered with anecdotes, and pointed out items along the way. At conclusion, he dropped character and answered all questions. We all loved it, even the two who are not history enthusiasts.

Guess It Was Fate

I am on a historical site frenzy and The Mark Twain House certainly lived up to my expectations as being a fantastic site to visit. The tour was very informative and my guide was thoroughly knowledgeable about the Clemens family and especially about the great humorist and author Samuel Clemens. There are plenty of original pieces inside the home as well as restored furnishings. One is not allowed to take pictures inside the house (as I was able to at The John Adams home in Quincy, Massachusetts) and the price is $20 but don't let that deter you from visiting ths amazing historical home of a truly remarkable American. Highly recommended!

loj leeb

Wow! I did not expect a building that amazing to be in such a sleepy town. Definitely do the tour of the house. The “in character” guide is really fun & the beautiful & idiosyncratic house was a delight! Can’t recommend enough!

Richard Onciul

An absolutely amazing experience. The tour guide went above and beyond to accommodate my children. Even if you've never read a Mark Twain novel I recommend you take the tour.

sivakholundu masilamani

A must see historical site..

Deborah Phillips

This was great fun! We did the tour with the chatty housekeeper. She was so funny. I want to go again, but with the butler this time. I bet he has a lot of delicious tea to spill. The housekeeper sure did!!!!!

Deborah LaPlace

I have visited the house 3 or 4 times, years ago but never has my docent so well informed.

teri templar

Very interesting! Connor was a great tour guide

Guille Su

The best! Tour staff are very informative obviously enjoy their job. A great opportunity to meet the past and learn how much he influence our future.

Chris Chabre

Great architecture and history! Would like to see lower group rates.

John

A wonderful place learn about the past. Katey was our guide as the lady of the houses dresser.

Gregory Robison

The house itself is neat to walk through, and the museum is a fitting memorial to the sardonic icon. Well worth a visit if you're in the area and like Twain. The souvenir shirts weren't in my size, and I was disappointed they didn't have one that said "Twain Wreck" showing him hosting a pint of whisky and running a steamboat aground. Somebody should make that a thing.

Nick Lazaris

Both the museum and house are excellent. The house is incredible as an 1870s period piece with all the conveniences of the day including a telephone and indoor flushing toilets. The house tour was excellent as was the tour guide. Try to see the intro movie before the house tour.

Levinus Haines

Mark Twain has...had...a house. He's dead (spoiler.) It's a nice house. Probably haunted by his daughter. Plenty to learn!

Masuma Shabnam

You will feel that contemporary days in yourself to soothe your soul !

Danielle Smith

Living tour was well worth the extra few dollars. Our guide George Griffin played by Tom never came out of character. He made the tour enjoyable and entertaining for children as well as adults. The gift shop had great and unique options.

Adrian Alonso

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." Mark Twain. A must see if visiting Hartford. Loved it!

John Marczi

Terrific piece of Americana. Well worth it. All tours are guided. If you like literary history this is for you. Easy access free parking.

Jacob Meadows

Beautiful house, should be allowed to take photos.

Johnny Wang

The living history tour was fantastic and well worth the money. Our tour guide was in character as Joe Twichell for the whole tour and played his part really well. We got a detailed look at the house and lots of commentary on what he thought of Mark Twain. Each living history character is an entirely different tour so you can go on multiple. Highly recommended

Cheryl Wegner

This is a "must see" when you're in Connecticut. Twain's home is a treasure. The guides tell the story of Twain's life and how the house reflects his travels and family. The house is, like Twain, charming and eccentric.

ken robinson

Such a cool stop. Guided tour of the house was very nice. Can't take pictures inside the house which was a bummer, but so much history. A must see!

Winna Heilman

Awesome. Both the house and museum were definitely a treat.

Kassia Salter

Knowledgeable staff, with an emphasis on living history! Had a blast!

Jill Leavenworth

Good guided tour. Didn't come at the right time for the living tour, but it looked fun. Also, my 2 for 1 pass from the library couldn't be used for the living tour. Rmoyed the house & learned a lot.

1MSKIS

Pleasantly surprised by having a 2 for 1 deal to see the Harriet Beecher Stowe house right next to Twain’s house. It was so nice to be educated and have a tour by a re-enactment of his daughter telling the story. Definitely take the tour this way. It’s more fun and colorful. Really happy!

Kathy Anderson

Beautiful house. The tour was rich with history. Very interesting

David Stark

We did the General House tour with Katie as our guide. Very informative and enjoyable!

valt

I love books and dream to be a author one day, and this place inspired me even more to make my dreams. Mark Twain is a very special author for writing books that make for an excellent museum. if you want some place for you or your family to go if you like books or just museums as a whole because there is so many sections the tour guides take you through making it one of the few places I would suggest to go even if you don't know who Mark Twain is.

Steve Hanford

MOST ENJOYABLE!!! Great learning experience.

Katie Frey

It was amazing!! The architecture was beautiful and the staff super friendly. Our Living Tour Guide Lizze was super knowledgeable and a lot of fun. I can't wait to go back!!

kenisha calucho

I really enjoyed the tour and the story of Mark Twain and George (butler). Beautiful home...I would do it again. The kids in my group did a scavenger hunt during the 90 mins tour of the home.

rocko magistri

I love the tour, I've been there several times.

Steve Traylor

I helped my son move from Spokane, WA to Hartford, CT and despite the weather we made the trip ahead of schedule with a day to spare. We decided to discover Hartford and Mark Twain's house proved to be a very worthy stop. I recommend the guided tour with a fellow named "Dan" who brought not only the homes history to life, but the surrounding Hartford area as well. Definitely a 10 out of 10 experience for me.

Molly Christina

Historical venue for the lovers of Mark Twain. I had a nice time here. Very informative.

Tova Horenstein

David gave excellent tour.

Mark Fekete

Had an outstanding tour here. Very informative, and really a beautiful house. Love that they didn't renovate everything and there are still parts that are exactly, not even touched up, the way it appeared back when Mark Twain lived there. Of note: Pictures aren't allowed in the house. (Really!?) Definitely check out the gift shop

Denise Freeman

We were unable to take the tour offer. However, we were able to walk around the beautiful grounds, and take a walk around a timeline of Mark Twains life. If your having difficulty locating where you are to purchase tickets for the house tour. If you've parked in the MARK Twain parking lot the path should lead you directly to the office. If you came from the street to the left or front (OSLI) of the Mark Twain home you'll want to follow the path to the right of the house after you walk past it. This will take you to the front office.

louis novak

Learned about the Clue version of the tour--very interesting.

Very very interesting to see the home of 'Mark Twain' and to hear about his home life whilst In it. The architecture is quite different, innovative and at times equally as beautifully charming as it is quirky. The interior design, the wall/ceiling stenciling in particular are worthy of an entire book. Our young guide, Ben, was absolutely brilliant, well spoken, knowledgeable on many aspects of Twain's life and home. He alone made the tour come alive. Of course, there is an extensive fascinating museum before consisting of wonderful displays and films which are on the first floor. Also on the first floor is a fabulously fun bookstore which is a must-see. To arrive to the second floor there is both an elevator and a stunning set of new stairs. There is a bright and airy Cafe with sandwiches, yogurt, cookies, coffee, teas and cold drinks. Seating indoors and out in a lovely garden which leads to the Twain Mansion. NOTE: The Harriet Beecher Stowe Mansion is right on the same lot and MUST be seen immediately after. [ We saw it right after looking at the Twain house, then went back to Mark Twain Museum to finish looking at exhibits in 1st FL and buy goodies in the Bookstore. ]

dale keim

If you are a fan of Sam Clemens you must go. Amazed to learn his next door neighbor was Louisa May Alcott. The house certainly reflects the character of the man. Docent stories were good

Lila Harrich

Just loved the tour. Guide very informative and entertaining. Hope to go back when in the area again.

Camille T

House is beautiful, majestic but tour was rushed. I suggest distancing time between tours. Guide could have had better annunciation. I made the mistake of needing to go to the bathroom and wasn't allowed to return. They're afraid of things being stolen I take it. Overall, it's an absolutely splendid house. I also suggest handing out pamphlets to visitors as they tour the house. This will only help the guide provide a better presentation.

Ven Surath

Very interesting place to visit. Enjoyed it.

JOYCE NEWELL

the tour was fine. I was disappointed that we couldn't take pictures inside the house so that lowered my enjoyment experience. The guide was knowledgeable. The architecture is amazing it was a good value for the money. And you figure it the money that you pay goes into the upkeep and salary so it's a good investment

Andrew Zabel

Really neat to learn and see where Mark Twain did much of his thinking and writing

T Remy

Second time there in two years, and we aren't local!! Enjoyed it so much in 2016 that wanted to share with my sister that traveled with us in Sept 2018!! They finished a room that wasn't open in 2016 and it was super! The bee wallpaper and details to bathroom were great. Interesting history behind the renovation as well. They changed the museum part of the upstairs as well, could learn more about the family and their pets. Check out this great place of one of America's favorite son's when you are in Hartford CT!!

Julia Kolesnyk

Tom Sawyer is waiting for you! The price of the guilded tour is $20. Highly recommend! Tour is about two hours and even if you didn't read any of the books, Mark Twain's associates will make sure you're all into it. Loads of interesting facts. Go inside the other building - they have some installations for free.

R. Spencer Perry

An awesome day learning far more than the grade school history books ever taught. A truly American author.

Adam Black

My hubby and I had such a fantastic time at the MTH. What a great conversation effort!! This historic house comes highly recommend!!

Krystle Syms

We did the tour with the actor. The actor was knowledgeable but just felt like someone that could have just as well given the normal tour, he wasn't horrible but would have been just as well as the normal tour. I believe the cost for the tour was rather pricy but do recommend seeing the house. Do be sure to make reservations. If you have time, watch the movie (about 20 mins) before going through the house, highly recommended. Overall good experience

Robert Smith

If you've ever read any American literature, you have to go here. The guide we had was excellent.

Mark M

Despite being located in a largely Latino city, almost nothing is in Spanish in the museum or house. People come from around the world to visit, but it's only accessible to the small percentage of people who speak English.

John Scelzi

This tour is a lot of fun, it's informative, and there's lots to see. The house is beautiful, and the guides are very good at staying in character without it being silly or dull. Specifically, our guide was George Griffin (I think the actor's name is Tom), and he was funny, entertaining, and provided not only a wealth of information on the property, but also the time period in general. If I could give more than five stars I would.

Nathaniel Jackson

love coming back here again and again to learn more and more about our awesome rich history....

Aaron Farrokh

I love the Mark Twain House. It takes you back to the glory days of Hartford. It has been wonderfully restored and maintained. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and you can tell that they take great pride in their work. They also host special events like The Mouth. The gift store and museum sections are very nice. Mark Twain loved cats as well, so that’s always a positive in my book.

Not Me

The tour is an absolute must if you're in Hartford. The interiors of the house are stunning. The entrance affords dramatic views (after all, it was designed by a church architect).

Viktoriia Pylypchuk

Living history tour and guide Patrick made our experience in Mark Twain house super informative and fascinating! First of all I am so grateful for the chance to see In my own eyes those amazing house and to caught the experience of just being Mark Twain guest. Also the guide Patrick was the very gentleman and well educated and prepared. The whole tour was like the living experience indeed. Our guide even greeted us in our native language which is Russian. Unbelievable!!! The tour time was about an hour and fifteen minutes. Within this time we traveled through a whole house - three flours and a lot of rooms. Tour tickets cost us $25 per person. I was a little sad though because first, there is absolutely no pictures or filming allowed and of course no touching the things rule. However the stories of great writer Mark Twain was remarkable, because he was very talented and remarkable man himself. Thank you!

Kulbir Singh Madhok

Amazing well kept house museum. The tour and the guide were the best part of our tour. You get enough time to go through all rooms of the house museum. They have a small cafeteria on site as well.

Michael Robinson

Wonderful venue with accommodations for the handicapped. Benefits from M Twain's outsized ego.

Madison Gallagher

super interesting and learned a lot - recommend for sure

Ken Beckett

Well worth a visit! Our guide was excellent.

Paritat Lerngutai

Nice place. Clean and educational.

Keith MacKay

Great tours in character. Fascinating story of an American legend.

Hurlee Blauvelt

It is a beautiful house loaded with history. Definitely worth visiting. Did not take the guided tour hence could not go inside the house. Only if you take the guided tour you can go inside the house. Nevertheless, enjoyed the museum and the souvenir store.

Linda Leach

Loved the tour! So much History.

Mikhail Pasternak

great experience to see how Sam turned into Mark

Juliet Wilson

We loved the gorgeous architecture. The tour guide was informative and answered all of our questions...he was very knowledgeable. We may return to have the character led tour. Great extra movie and museum where you buy tickets.

Lori DeBoer

Educational, great gift shop, interesting at all levels.

Realtor Chris Burek

A great place to visit to see how Mark Twain lived during his time there. The tour guide we had did a great job explaining many things about the family.

Lynnette Monk Dezan

We took a tour with a historical figure (the Butler). It was outstanding! So much history and information about the Clemens family and insight based on the butler's point of view. So glad we decided chose this tour.

September Búho

Excellent tour. Beautiful place and Mark Twain"s house full of energy!

Brian Miller

Did the Get a Clue mystery tour - what fun! Playing Clue with real people in a house museum with characters acting is an absolute winning idea. I'd do this again and again. Great for a group trip too!

Chantel Thompson

Beautiful house and grounds! We took a "Living History" tour and we were chaperoned by Mrs. Twain. Great day trip!

Robb McClintock

I was taking a trip to Connecticut and Rhode Island. I had plans to start in Mystic the day after traveling and figured I should make something of the travel day and planned a stop here a bit out of the way. I planned this as a bit of a time killer, but by the end of the trip this was the part I most enjoyed. The museum was interesting, the house tour much moreso. The tour guide I had was very knowledgeable, open to questions, and I got the feeling she genuinely liked what she was presenting rather than doing as an obligation as part of a job. I learned a good deal and saw some pieces I very much appreciated. Even though I've done it already, I could actually see myself doing it again if in the area.

Joe Crinkley

As a lover of literature and Twain especially, I'm a little biased, but in my opinion, the Mark Twain house and museum is one of the most interesting landmarks in New England. It's such an amazingly well-preserved piece of American history and is also just a really unique house and experience. The museum is very thorough with its artifacts and details about Sam Clemens and his family's lives. The house itself is a marvel of architecture as well as interior design. It's a wonderful way to see how people lived back in that time and to get a sense of one of the most influential writers and American figures in history. Additionally, the staff and docents who run the museum and tours are exceptional. They will go above and beyond to make sure you enjoy your time there and can answer practically any question about Clemens, his family, or life in that region and time. Plus, most of them are humorists like Twain and will make it a fun experience for all. It might not be the best for small kids or dullards, but it's the best such experience in the Northeast. There are quite a few places in this region where you can step backwards in time to see a snapshot of how life used to be, but the Twain house is by far the most enjoyable and interesting way to get a glimpse of an American experience and a truly special slice of our nation's history.

Susan Burnop

Loved it! Our guide was wonderful, very informative, not rushed and a small group . I would recommend to anyone who is into history. And older homes.

Penelope Deotte

We took the Living History tour. It was wonderful.

Lorelei DuBois

We took the tour guided by " Lizzie" who was in the service of the Clemons family while they lived in Hartford. She was excellent! It costs a bit more to have a "Character Guide" but I feel it's definitely worth it. It's a structure that made me feel justified in my feeling that moulding is the most important visual element residential architecture! Loved it!

Tim Flath

Mark twain built a beautiful Victorian mansion on Farmington ave in Hartford Connecticut, twain wrote of all the city's I have had the pleasure of visiting Hartford is chief! I wish I could show twain Hartford today I'm surprised Connecticut does not tax the air we breathe, anyway this place is definitely worth a visit, they give you a tour of the whole house, he had the first telephone in Hartford, my favorite room is the billiard room, beautiful absolutely beautiful, a slate billiard table, mounts he killed and put on his wall, twain wrote huckleberry Finn in that house, unfortunately his son Landon caught cold on a sleigh ride and died, twain could not stand the place after that sold the house moved to Elmira new York where he eventually died and is buried there, if your in Hartford you can't miss this!!! Historic and educational.

Stephen Baumann

Unreal! Truly a must see! Honestly, on par with seeing the statue of liberty, if not better

Jasmine Le

I thoroughly enjoyed the show at the beginning of the tour. Visiting the house was great, but I felt disconnected. You can't explore freely, absolutely no touching because items in the house do not belong to the museum, and much of the house was restored/recreated as close as possible using photos because it was sold and items were auctioned after Twain's bankruptcy. This isn't completely different from other museum, but the tour was conducted in a way that made it feel inauthentic.

adam Halpern

Brandon Elijah

great place to get some cool insights into our history.

Shari Arndt

Touring this house was great. Learning about his life and family was really very interesting. Looking st all the artifacts was pretty cool. These tours are not really good if you have young kids or elderly parents with you, too many stairs and lots of standing.

Khaled Rahman

Wonderful place. Unfortunately when we reached there that time it was closed. Will visit there when it's open.

Christie Bell

Incredible mansion and great info on Mark Twains life

The guides were knowledgeable and able to answer any questions we had. The tour included anecdotes about Twain's life and insights into his family life.

Debra Jackson

This was an awesome muesuem. The tour guide, Stephanie, was very knowledgeable about the author and his history. I will definitely return and brag about this place. Thank you, Stephanie for making my tour great. Bless you.

Margaret Hayes

Gorgeous, host was very knowledgeable, etc. My only whine is that you cannot photograph in the house. But it was beautiful! And you can feel that the Clemens family was a happy one. Good vibes prevail.

Ozgur Satici

Nice house, it was closed so couldn't get inside.

Interesting visit, good historical information. If you go you definitely have to do the tour, the displays are not enough. Only complaint is the cost of the tour which is like $20/person.

Krista Goh

We did the general tour which lasted an hour. Our tour guide was very engaging and knowledgeable. We also walked through the other exhibits, including "Twain's Attic" which just opened last week and runs through January 2020. We enjoyed our time at the Mark Twain House.
