Pretty interesting collection. We thought the Kennedy photo gallery to be particularly interesting. Cool outdoor artwork too. Went on a free admission day, but not sure if I'd ever pay to go.

Alexis Aragon

Very nice things for kids. But wasn't Stroller friendly ans no baby changing tables in bathroom

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum is a gem. It is small in scale, but grand in detail. It is local in flavor, but international in reach. If you're travelling to and fro on route 95, it is easy off, easy on.

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum was an unexpected treat. My family planned a short beach getaway. Unfortunately, our plans for the beach were thwarted by inclement weather. On a whim, we decided to check out the museum. The Lyman Allyn Museum was one of the highlights of our trip. It was amazingly child friendly. Both my 7 year old and 4 year old loved the art scavenger hunt. The loved winning their prize pencils. We all liked exploring the collections of American art from many eras ranging from the Colonial Era up to contemporary time. The basement was devoted to children's education and enjoyment. There were displays of antique toys including a large scale dollhouse. There were also instruments, educational toys, and comfortable cushions. Outside, there are large scale sculptures. We liked exploring the grounds. The Lyman Allyn provides a great child friendly cultural experience for the whole family.

A wonderful hometown gem of a museum. Small enough to see everything on display in an afternoon, but between their rotating permanent collection and temporary exhibits it will never bore art lovers. Frequently hosts free events so you can get a taste of the benefits of paying for museum membership if you’re able. Welcoming to families, groups, and individuals.

Another one of CTs hidden art gems. One of my favorite painters is Thomas Cole and the piece they have is absolutely beautiful and they have it showcased perfectly. They have a great collection of American Impressionism, Tonalism, Hudson River School, and Modern Art. If you are an art lover you need to visit this place.

Now museum. Got in on a free day! Lots of neat local artwork in mostly realism style, which I dig. Doll house museum in the basement.

Alysa Stewart

Nice museum with four or five different galleries. They get good exhibits and change them often. They have a nice permanent collection and sculpture garden as well. The museum is free to New London residents with ID, and I've enjoyed that perk. It's a kid friendly place, and they have a little scavenger hunt for the kids to do in the permanent collection. When it's completed, they get to pick a pencil or bookmark. They also have kids crafts on Saturdays and a giant dollhouse I-spy activity.

It was beautiful to see different paintings in different style in different centuries. I loved it. I learned more about art and how different it was back then. I would consider this a great museum you should definitely come.

Such an amazing museum. There are many kind staff here with a supreme amount of knowledge who are always willing to help. I interned here and learned a lot for my future career. I will definitely be coming back to visit as well as to help on exhibits.

Hidden gem of a museum that's on the up and up! A complete remodel is apparently on the way this year. They started some new courses recently too. Took one course with a Wesleyan professor.

Emil Carlsen Exhibit was awesome. Staff was noisy. Sold out of the Exhibit Book. Nice little Museum.

Heard a great lecture about Louis Comfort Tiffany and Tiffany Glass. Needless to say, this museum has exquisite pieces of art and I truly enjoyed my first time! The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. I will be returning soon !

Maria Bareiss

I admit that I am biased, but the Lyman Allyn is a beautiful museum, with the most gorgeous exhibition featuring the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany, not just his windows and lamps, but an impressive diversity of talents are on display. In the basement is a cute room for playing with younger children, although my 12 year old niece and I had a fun time having our own puppet show for ourselves. The staff is warm, and if you live in New London, the admission is free!

John Smigel

I'm not a very "cultured" individual, so it wasn't quite my speed, but it was still a very nice way to spend a cold or rainy day. There are three floors, the top floor was by far the best and the largest with not much of the room taken up by anything but art. The main floor had several exhibits as well, and the lower level focused on a children's area as well as conference/training rooms. The exhibits generally followed a theme with several peices following a specific artist, subject or geographical area. Their website has press releases on most exhibits as they come out. I was able to see the Emil Carlsen (mostly oil works), and the JFK exhibits. Many of the exhibits tell a story so it's useful to travel through them the correct direction, which I messed up at least once.

Another Connecticut gem in the crown of art museums. Lyman Allyn always has interesting changing exhibitions of current artists as well as their permanent collections. They have free events monthly and it's a great place to bring the kids. Parking is free and there's a picnic table out front if you're coming from some distance and want to have a bite to eat before you leave. Be sure to pack your own food for the picnic because there are no restaurants within walking distance. Also within walking distance is the Connecticut College Arboretum so if you're looking to extend your visit this is just a short walk up the street. It's a great place to visit from spring to fall.

A very nice, totally manageable museum. Not too big. The collection was good too, with a nice mix of contemporary and older art. They have a nice area for crafts for the kids as well. The only knock against it is that big highway someone built in front of it. Otherwise it is in a lovely setting. The building itself is beautiful as well. They should consider adding more of a gift shop too. I think they had one or two books for sale.
