What a beautiful place. The new curator is doing an amazing job!!! What fun can't wait to go back again. The staff was delightful !!! 5 star place
Very interesting historic American art colony. The cafe has WONDERFUL food, too!
Lovely little museum with some wonderful works by American Impressionists, especially Childe Hassam. A beautiful location on the Lieutenant River with spectacular gardens. At Cafe Flo, lunch on the veranda with great views and delicious food. Thoroughly enjoyed my visit.
Quiet and amazing but views
Adorable Little Fairy Villages
Had a good time my son and daughter-in-law took me
I love the annual events the Florence Griswold Museum holds. They have an excellent fairy house exhibit with Hands-On activities for the kids like scavenger hunting. They have so many performances and fun things for the family to enjoy together. I especially love shopping in their gift shop for the holidays.
Wonderful location for the wedding we attended
We were inspired by the wee fairy village exhibits and went home to make our own. It was a chilly day but despite a school group being there we didn't feel crowded.
Wonderful exhibit Fragile Earth
More interesting than I thought it would be, to be honest. The story of Miss Griswold and her tenants are an inspiration to a younger audience who may not yet grasp the capital-R Romantic appeal of art; sadly, the museum's patrons are almost entirely an older crowd. I hope, with time, that the museum will find its voice to appeal to future generations, as it continues to celebrate its illustrious past.
The hisorical focus makes this more than just an art gallery.
Excellent view, right along the water
Beautiful scenery and excellent food, ask for Ted
Great place for art lovers! On Sundays they provide paints, canvas and everything needed to paint! It's lovely to sit in the beautiful garden by the river and paint. Must visit on a Sunday with family and spend good time with nature.
Beautiful place
Nice art Gallery in Old Lyme, CT
Great museum! Lots of very different and unique artwork, the history of the place is interesting as well.
Beautiful, serene setting. House is very interesting, museum is well set up, and the grounds are so peaceful. My high school hosted an alumni event there - we were given time to visit the museum before having a house tour. We then had a private lunch on the grounds. A great place to host a small event.
Fantastic display of WW I era art
I thought the place was very cool, but I'll be honest, my biggest memory is of the guide i affectionately named the Drunken Docent because well, it was 10am and she had clearly enjoyed a liquid breakfast. Sad that is my biggest memory, but it is what it is.
An amazing collection of American Impressionist artwork and a wonderful assortment of programs for any level of art enthusiast.
Came for the fairy exhibit. Very beautiful grounds and really good cafe!
Home of American Impressionism
Beautiful place! The grounds are good for kids to run around outside, picnic, etc. The interior museum is lovely, and her house and the grounds are amazing!
Always enjoy the annusl Wee Fairie village.
Absolutely love this gem of a museum. Do yourself a favor and make plans to visit. Be sure to walk the grounds, especially near the water.
It was closed
Enjoyable time with friends! The artist's imaginations soared as did those who were there!
Beautiful Museum to visit & have lunch.. Excellent customer service by staff. Highly recommend it to everyone!
Absolutely AMAZING experience!!! Such wonderful people & gorgeous grounds!!!
We had a wonderful visit at the FG museum today. It was beautifully decorated for Christmas by different period artists and much of the original Christmas decor of the 1800s. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and informed and ready to answer any questions. This is a must see visual treat when in the area.
We go every year for the fairy exhibit, it is wonderful.
Our annual visit..be sure yo have lunch at flos
A very nice gem of a museum in a small country town with lots of history and lots of things to see. There is a restaurant at the back of the main building with seating outside by the river which is fabulous. Have lunch there and then spend the afternoon going round the site to see the house and the museum.
Fantastic museum! Gorgeous grounds. I was there on a beautiful very late spring day, for over 3 hours. Be sure to look at everything, not just the museum. Her house is wonderful, the gardens are lovely, and be sure to take a walk down to the river to soak up the atmosphere.
Came here with a friend one day and we enjoyed ourselves looking at the art and the gardens. It was great to learn about the art community in this town and how it came to be. We enjoyed the gardens and saw a variety of butterflies here. We were also surprised to learn that the grounds are more spread out than was originally thought. $10 admission for adults, free parking, and a cafe on the premises.
Nice museum. Beautiful grounds. Wonderful restaurant.
I’ve lived in Connecticut for 31 years and just visited the Florence Griswold Museum for the first time this summer. It was such a treat! Aside from the beautiful scenery you can witness outside of the museum, the exhibits were phenomenal! The Krieble Gallery is a modern museum that is currently showing the Naturalist Contemporary Art exhibit, which spills over into the Florence Griswold House in the form of Jennifer Angus’ insect art which is truly MIND-BLOWING! The juxtaposition of the contemporary art displayed in/on the period house of Miss Florence really makes the house feel like it’s still alive. Worth the visit!
Had our wedding reception at the museum a little over a year ago. Incredible grounds and great staff!
Love this place and the history and art!
We had an awesome time exploring the grounds of Florence Griswold home & artist boarding house. This is a self guided tour, but we were welcomed into the house by two very sweet women who were around to help if you had any questions for them. My husband & I had never heard of Ms. Griswold or of her quirky enchanting boarding house before this trip, and we are so happy we stopped to hear the stories of this house and see the artwork of the many talented artists who completed work while living there. The downstairs is setup to look like it did back in the early 1900s (it was originally built in 1817), while the upstairs is cleared out and is an art gallery for the works of the artists. We didn’t bring our 7 year old on this trip, but I think she would have enjoyed it as well, they had a scavenger hunt checklist that would get children interested in looking at theIr surroundings & the artwork. During the month of October they have a fairy gardens setup, which were adorably lined along the beautiful property. We would love to come back with our daughter next year for her to enjoy this!
Enjoyable small museum featuring the history of an art era. Pretty grounds and some very good art. Nice day trip.
A magical experience, particularly the art colony dining room. A time warp to when great artists summered there and shared their God given talents with each other and their host
Fantastic; never realized the history that is on display, incredible paintings of a bygone era.
It's a gem kind of place for art (paintings) lovers.
Check out the fairy fest in the fall
Faerie village is a wonderful spot to spend an afternoon. Perfect for children.
Excellent staff with attention to detail.
Beautiful grounds, gardens, and exhibits. The docents were very knowledgeable. Enjoyed spending the afternoon there!
What a nice museum! I never knew that this part of Connecticut has such a rich art history. This is worth checking out if you are bored and want to get out of the house for a couple of hours. The women that work in the house really know their stuff, they will let you walk around unsupervised however it's worth it to let them guide you.
Great exhibits, even better restaurant!
This place was great much to see.
Really well run museum
While I want to describe this museum as "quaint", it's much more than that. The gallery space could be expanded, but there's more than just the gallery to enjoy here. Walking the beautiful property along a CT river estuary is a treasure of its own. The Faerie Village exhibits in October area special surprise. The story of Florence Griswold and the flamboyant painters she hosted in the old house on the property conjures tales of eccentric and unusual freedom of expression in an oppressed time. It must have been an artists' oasis. Would be interesting to have a movie made to recreate what it may have been like. There's a good story in there.
Went for faerie village event. 2nd year attending, highly recommended
Great faerieville display! We had fun with the scavenger hunt!
Fantastic !
Loved the fairies village
Quirky local history and fine art that can't ever go on loan
So interesting and fascinating.
Fascinating history and beautiful.
Great place
Flo Gris Cafe has excellent food beautiful grounds. Art museum
We love this museum.
Wonderful museum. Breathtaking art work and knowledgeable staff!
This museum has interesting exhibitions combined with beautiful grounds. You can enjoy art, you can enjoy nature. Walking around the grounds are just as enjoyable as seeing a new exhibition or walking around Florence Griswold's house and seeing the history that is preserved for us. This is one of my favorite places.
A beautiful and very interesting museum. We even had Sunday brunch which was delicious.
Painting in the garden on Sundays. Can't miss!
The Florence Griswold House alone is worth the trip, marvelous grounds as well. Visit!
Visited the museum for the very first time, after growing up & living it CT for over 20 years. A superb museum and only touched just one of the rooms in the modern gallery. Very impressed to see the Church painting of the CT Charter Oak, always thought it was in the Hartford Atheneum. Spent 3 hrs.there, plan on another visit soon.
Love the Faerie Village.
Love this place!! Best exhibit; best food; so much fun to show off to a guest!
Beautiful and majestic
Would love to visit, but unfortunately your website is lacking and I can't find the days you are open or your houra.
Awesome, very open & easy to find everything that we were looking for!
The history and art alone make the journey to this Museum a bucket list must. The well thought out gallery and explanation of style means even a novice art lover can extend the beauty of the art beyond the canvas.
Cafe Flo is amazing!
We to see the museum and the faerie kingdom both were quite beautiful and magical. The grounds were well maintained and manicured. My only complaint is the placement of a huge gay rainbow flag in the midst of the faerie displays. I respect all people and have lots of gay friends. This does not belong among displays of faerie artwork as this is a political statement. Shall we also have a Bernie Sanders banner? How about a Trump MAGA flag? This is a place especially for children and it is inappropriate to have politics rammed down their throats.
A beautiful plot of land littered with wondrous creations.
The fairies were amazing!
Very interesting
It's a small gem of a museum with helpful, friendly and knowledgeable staff.
A special place in American Impressionism Art History. Always worth a stop, there is always somthing new to see, whether it's an annual Fairy Village, outdoor instalation, or a photo exibit. It is very active with the local community and very kid friendly!
Very attentive guides describe this once haven for American artists. I visited during the winter where the cafe wasn't open, but I imagine this place would be amazing to go to in the warmer months as it also has views of a nearby river.
Educational events for both children and adults.
Great experience
Lecture by Jac Lahav was excellent as was his show. Cafe small but adequate. In rain an odd entrance via porch.
River walk is worth stopping
Great exhibit. The docents were marvelous.
Pleasant place to have lunch.
Florence Griswold, the namesake of the museum ran a boardinghouse for painters during the Impressionist era of painting. Painters were charged $1 a day for food and lodgeing. The lodgers painted scenes on the bedroom door panels, above fireplaces and on the dining room walls. You can view the house, furnished rooms and painted walls/doors. There are also examples of paintings done at the house on display in the gallery. Insertion, a separate building gold holds a rotating art display. On our visit framed letters of the painters. Not very appealing to us. We did enjoy the small garden and Florence's house.
I love coming here and my kids love the Wee Faerie Village!
Very interesting! A great stop on the way from Boston to NY.
Nice art, and I like the ferry garden's they do every year. Go with your family.
Beautiful place to visit inside and out and the docents were do helpful.
Excellent. Beautiful venue, good cafe restaurant, delightful museum and shop
Lovely gardens and cafe. Had lunch here - excellent service. Have not visited museums yet.
Truly a gem! Seems to be kept up beautifully. The staff is very knowledgeable and had fun anecdotes about Florence and the other artists who lived there. I've lived in Connecticut for a long time and just found out about this place over the summer. I plan to come back with friends!
Great location
The Griswold is a gem, but don't miss the free gallery next door displaying current Lyme artists. The quality amazed us. Wow!
Fairy village is a fun falltime outing for families
Great art and grounds
A gem of a museum with magnificent gardens.
Great place to explore
It's a must visit. Very reasonable entry fee. For us, the house and it's history was the highlight of the visit. The docents were extremely informative. We'll go back. Give yourself time to see everything, it's a gem of a place to visit. We had lunch there too at the Flo. Delicious and great service.
Idyllic setting, beautiful artwork, and loads of family-friendly activities. Highly recommend plein air painting on Discovery Sundays!
Enjoyed a nice art filled evening. And enjoyed all the historic building around the area. Along with the beautiful views you can only see in New England in the fall.
Great place to spend the day. Great activities for kids and adults. Kids under 12 are free.
Beautiful I always love going here
Highly recommended. Very well maintained museum with interesting gardens and grounds. Great little cafe attached to the museum with coffee and drinks! The docents were very knowledgeable and I learned a lot about this little slice of Connecticut History
Fabulous PLACE and day. Marvelous exhibit A Room of her Own/Ballad of Ruth Coxe by Pola Esther. Moving and well done. Grounds staff and volunteers stupendous. Ty all!!
My favorite. Like no other. Great place to spend a leisurely afternoon alone or with friends/family. The museum, the house, the docents, the exhibits, Cafe Flo, the view, the gift shop - all top notch.
Always a great way to spend a couple of hours. The art exhibits seem to change every couple of months making the experience fresh and new each time.
Lots of fun exploring the Fairy Gardens.
Great artwork and paintings
We go to the wee fairy village every fall.y kids love it.
Just stopped for the Pokemon but would like to go back to check out the exibits.
This was such a cute little Meusum and garden. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We love the seek and find both for kids and adults in the house. Coloring stations and farm making table in the art exhibit. The artist retreat was really neat as well. We didn't try the cafe this time but will in the future. The grounds are also beautifully kept.
Great place to visit if you like art.
Cafe Flo is my wife's favorite restaurant
The bugs are amazing beautiful exhibit.
