This Museum belongs to the category of Museum.
Very nice museum, and very easy to navigate. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was construction going on at the time of our visit, but that did not make much of a difference to our experience. I loved a few of the exhibits, and the rest were interesting. Some of them are geared towards children. My favorite museum of the day.
Interesting exhibitions. Especially the "cannibals" exhibit.
I was very excited about the museum. To my surprise everything is a plastic/fiberglass replica. Why charge so much for plastic exhibits?
A fun day at the park
It was under construction when we went so it was somewhat confusing but still entertaining and well worth the money to see the exhibits.
The building was beautiful. The museum itself had a cool layout but wasn't actually very interesting or informative, which is fine but isn't what I expected. Seemed pretty biased in a lot of the information it shared, and didn't share pure objective history like regular museums. It was cool but I wouldn't spend money on it again.
Really? $20 bucks for that? Save your money. There is nothing in this place worth spending your money on. It is really one of the worst museums I have ever been to. It’s a nice building, staff is nice, but the exhibits are so poorly designed. They have nothing to say. Sad.
It was ok. Not exactly what I was expecting.
Great exhibits highlighting the history of humans. Quite a few modern exhibits and some on further back. The cannibal exhibit was spectacular and I would recommend taking the family. However I would recommend eating first. It is a long exhibit and if your children look as much like chicken nuggets as mine do you may get a couple funny ideas around the half way point. This museum is right in the heart of Balboa park and a must see if you are visiting san diego from out of town.
Wonderful experience....the artwork and exhibits are so well done. They draw you in to ask more questions, but also answer them.
Well curated museum and easily navigated. I enjoyed the Cannibal exhibit as well as the rest they had on display. Sadly the dome was under construction.
Great museum...all of Balboa Park is great.
Amazing, great place, take your time going through it
Cannibal exhibit was really educational. Informative, and well done. I enjoyed how it helped people put it in first hand ethical perspective. I highly reccomend. Also, the beer exhibit is really educational about something that so many people care about!
I expected the cannibal exhibit to be more facts and a historic telling of what occurred in the most horrific of circumstances. Instead, I found an exhibit that wanted to make us accepting of cannibalism as "normal." Instead of presenting facts, it was a biased retelling of stories, omitting other relevant facts. It condemned those who were opposed to cannibalism. There was a picture of a human body that depicted different cuts of meat and where they are in the body. There was an Operation like game that had the calorie count for organs, meant to engage kids. I was in shock that this was all proudly displayed. Absolutely horrific.
Went to the cannibal exhibit on my last visit to San Diego. I must say it was quite enticing. However, i was thoroughly disappointed that no one tried to bite me which is why I am only giving it 4 stars. The mummy part was dope too. Really old folk are always my cup of tea. Will be returning!
The museum has history of how humans have evolved. I spent lot of time here and it was worth while. There are lot of exhibits and it could take a while to see all the exhibits.
Large variety of different displays. Something for everybody adults and children. Great place to take the family
Some fascinating pieces, also some creepy ones. The overwhelming feeling on leaving though is this place is about activism rather than education. Almost every exhibit has an agenda.
Very limited museum, now that the displays that made it the "museum of man" are no longer on display. Most displays are rather kitchey and excessively politically correct. I doubt museum will last much longer as a significant attraction. Rather sad compared to what it used to be.
The cannibalism exhibit was the best museum experience I've ever had! It's interactive, it's fun, and it encourages a multicultural attitude. I'd recommend visiting on a weekday to avoid crowds in Balboa Park!
The Secrets display was really interesting you could leave your own postcard with your secret. The Cannibalism display was very enlightening.
I couldn't fully explore the whole museum but the Race exhibit is 10/10 if you're in college taking a class in Ethnic Studies (doesn't matter the emphasis here by the way) and need to write a report about it, since there are some secret facts here and there which I don't think I should post them here and neither I knew about them before, but these may give you a good work if you want to get outside the box. Will probably come again if the Art History class for summer semester requires to check out a museum.
Great museum, very informative curators. The tar pits were super cool to see
Loved this museum. It was not crowded, I felt like I could take my time at each exhibit and really read and understand the different sets. I would suggest it even to people who think they dont like museums. There is also a section for kids so the little ones will not be bored. I quite enjoyed the monster exhibit.
Of all the museums in this park it is by far the worst. Dirty and mostly uninteresting. Our indigenous display here is pathetic.
Post secrets is a new exhibit & was very interesting & moving. They have hundreds of cards to read. They also have a new exhibit on cannibalism which was very interesting.
Fantastic exhibits that really make you question the origins of our cultural "norms".
From monsters and beer history to tours in the Tower of California, our relationship with animals and the truth about cannibalism - there is something for everyone at the San Diego Man Museum. During your visit, you will explore many unique interactive exhibits that cover a wide range of human history and culture. In addition, you can make your visit even more memorable as part of the tour in the California Tower and visit the limited time exhibition, Cannibals: Myth & Reality.
Interesting find. Glad we visited but would not return. Something to do once. Will visit another museum next time.
The cannibalism side is cool. But the Museum of Man side pushes too much of a political agenda
It's a decent museum, but not a good anthropology museum. It has a very diverse section of exhibits but with very loose connections and some political undertones. It's good to go on a free day.
Very interesting museum. The exhibits are fun and informative. My favorite right now is the secret exhibit. It's so neat. I also enjoyed the cannibal exhibit they put in.
Least interesting muesum in the park, especially during construction when a lot of exhibits are closed. Parents: The monster exhibit is particularly boring, and the only kid friendly part.
Very cool. Definitely recommend hitting this place.
We enjoyed ourselves, but nothing too spectacular.
13 dollars is a little too much, not worth it. Many of the things to experience are digital, not very museum-like. The Stelas are the only good historic thing that I saw.
I'm sad the tower is closed for renovations but the exhibits are still awesome
Website not up to date or list exhibits that are closed. However Mayan Stellars are interesting. But probably won't visit again.
Still great even with the active construction
Challenging and thought-provoking, but also fun and delightful.
The post secret exhibit and the race exhibit are moving and incredible
I really enjoy museums but this is hardly a museum. 90% of the eye candy is plastic displays with writing on them and even videos. I feel like I could have read most of this at home. Maybe it's good for kids but the info is also very basic. I didn't enjoy the anti science, political, racial narrative being pushed as well. $13 to get in? Hard pass...enjoy the park instead
Amusing place that doesn't take itself seriously. Seems a bit more like an art exhibit than a traditional museum that might be considered anthropological.
Great exhibits. Well run and the museum itself is a historical landmark. Must see this while in Coronado!
Some of the best vacation spots are like this one. With events and no real need to go buying lots to enjoy your time. Will go back for sure one day!
Great exhibits of race and story of cannalbism
Neat things there!
I wasn't very impressed by this place. The general admission price didn't get you into very much and each additional exhibit cost more money to go see. The museum also seemed to really be pushing an agenda on me in the form of the exhibits rather than purely educate me and allow me to form my own opinions. There is plenty of things to do in Balboa Park. I don't recommend this unless you've seen everything else and still have a few hours to kill.
The museums of Balboa Park do_NOT_disapoint! I have been enlightened by friendly docents, some of whom were beginning their own breaks, with knowledgeable and interesting information. Kudos to them.
it's a bit small but the exhibits are vaguely interesting. i recommend going to the cannibalism exhibit nearby, it's more fascinating than the actual "museum of man". the exterior is nice, though.
Great exhibit on beer and cannibalism
We went to a beautiful wedding their !!!!
The museum had construction during my visit. This restricted much of what was on display, including the ability to go up into the California Tower. Also, there is a lot of disturbing content and not recommended for more sensitive viewers
Interesting! Sections about cannibals (!) Race, and original American displays. Stone pillars carved.
Dear God, this is the cheapest, most boring museum I've ever been to. Save your $13 per person ticket money and do something more enjoyable like creating actuarial tables or being a commodities broker.
The people inside were a little rude. You smile at them they don't smile back it makes for less of a nice experience.
Amazing gem... Even during construction. The variety of exhibitions was inspiring. Most of them were eye opening, addressing themes that I frankly haven't thought much before. Like cannibalism. Surprisingly common practice in societies that you'd never think of. The "Secret postcard" project. Examining racism with rich data. Go off you have time. Located in the beautiful Balboa Park.
Very informative especially the history of beer!
Very interesting place.
Some construction going on. The exhibit on cannibalism well done. Makes one think deeply.
Definately for the anthropologists out there. You will find out about man in general but also about some of the local indigenous tribes in the area. There are, in some days ladies there making fry bread or tortillas. There are mid friendly areas and even the early man exhibits are partially clothed to keep the giggling to a minimum. Across the street but part of the museum is The Miracle of life which is for older kids ans adults, unless they already kniw where babies come from. Very nice museum all the way around to included in Museum Day!!
Thought provoking exhibits. Will definitely go back
It wasn't bad, the cannibal exhibit was the best part. Along with the race exhibit. Very interesting information.
Interesting Museum full of Archeology and anthropology - history of mankind. currently has a Beer exhibit. Also, over the bridge to another section, there is a cannibal exhibit.
Great place to go on a rainy day and mail off some secrets in the secret room.
An excellently curated and fascinating anthropology museum. Small enough to see in a few hours but expansive enough to feel worth the effort. It has unique exhibits that stimulate your mind while interactive displays draw you in. Topics from monster myths to brewing beer present original ways to think about culture and will leave you feeling curious to learn more. Great for kids as well as adults! Don't miss the dome tour. It's a very slight additional price but you get a great view from the top. If you're interested in human culture and society, I wouldn't miss this place!
Very unique museum experience with a few quirky exhibits.
Disappointing. Especially. Their humans and animal exhibit. In my opinion. Most of the exhibits look like they've been put together by 8th graders. A real shame for such a beautiful building in such a beautiful setting. *Dont look for the history of Man here. It is nowhere to be found.
Amazing! The history of cannibalism and beer was amazing.
Great historical place!
Very informative. Interactive. Great to have this apart of Balboa park, w awesome views great museums & upbeat vibe
Located in one of the most stunning buildings in Balboa Park, this anthropological museum hosts diverse exhibits from ancient Egyptian mummies to artifacts from the original peoples of San Diego, the Kumeyaay American Indians. More recently, the museum includes exhibits on human ecology and evolution and contains many remains of early humanoids. The California Tower, one of the tallest points in Balboa Park and part of the museum, has a must-see view of the city from the top.
Loved it... Recommended for everyone
One of the most interesting museums I have visited in a while, I personally enjoyed (more than the rest) the post secret area. To see all of these people sharing these deep secrets anonymously is so incredible, truly unforgettable experience. The prices are pretty low at around 12-25 dollars depending on what you are to visit, and the installations are always clean and ready for use, just make sure you visit on a calm day when it isn't so busy!
Great venue to get hitched!
Really needs an update. Not what I expected from.San Diego. You need more informative history I just understand the concept behind your program
Ray and Cecilia were amazing tour guides for The Tower Tour! Ray was quick and witty with his stories he had prepared for each stop. My favorite part was learning about how The San Diego Zoo was started. The views were amazing and the staff was friendly. The tour is kid friendly and safe. There are a lot of stairs, so be mindful about how many shorter legs are in your group. Overall I had a blast and I highly recommend that you take this tour if you haven't already done so. And try to catch Ray’s tour if you can!
Been to a lot of museums, but this one seemed unique. Had very good creative exhibits about the human experience (e.g. race, cannibalism, beer making, myths/fears, etc) that were relatively small, but focused. It made it feel like it was really one museum made up of several mini museums.
I love museums. Price was right. And I wanted something different. Parking is horrible...but that isnt a blame for the museums...that is a blame for the city.
Fascinating displays - I recommend the Cannibal exhibition! Pay the extra and climb the tower: you don't go right to the top, but the views are still impressive.
A truly wonderful museum. Currently going through seismic retrofit, it still open but a bit hard to get to.
Incredibly disappointing to see this “museum” pushing an agenda. Worst waste of 13.00 a person for me and my entire family. Im a huge history buff and specifically that of mankind...however, this was not that...we will not be returning or recommending to anyone. Balboa Park’s other attractions were all great and the city in general has been a favorite vacation spot for our family for nearly 25 years.
Great exhibit. Came with free admission to cannibal exhibit. $13 for both.
The best part about this museum is the building and the tower- I do love how much information they are able to pack in such a relatively small place; what is neat is that they make the information really easy to understand for all age groups and backgrounds. I really enjoyed learning about a variety of topics. They have several interactive displays too. I didn’t like how expensive it was for the amount of info and exhibits it has. I understand museums struggle with funding so I was ok paying for the entrance but it is a bit steep. I recommend researching to see if they have free days or discounted pricing.
Always fun to visit this museum in the summer. There were interesting exhibits this summer with the Myth of Cannibalism and the Monsters we Fear.
Not much to see. They charge 13 to go into the museum and in order to see any other museums u have to buy the 13 dollar museum of man pass plus an additional amount. I love history but for the amount of money they charge I was expecting more. I'm only putting 2 stars because the employees are nice.
It was a great experience even though I just went for about a hour. There is information about how the kumeyaay lived and living with pets and pests. You'll see how animals evolved and adapted to living with humans and how rats, roaches, and pigeons are survivors. The last excibit I visited was the post secret where you read postcards of people's secrets and you realize that we are alike and have secrets and staying around people that won't judge you for your secrets and fantasies will keep you at peace with yourself. Even though I didn't see all of the museum has to offer it was a great experience. Hope everyone that goes has a great experience like I did.
As a resident of San Diego I have been to the Museum of Man many times. What strikes me about the Museum of today as opposed to years past is it is now much more kid friendly. Some may resent the loss of academic space to exhibits concerning monsters and secretes. Hopefully no one objects to learning more about beer. Anyway that's the new roll the Museum has laid out for itself. Much more pop and less hard science. Good for three hours at least. Contains the entrance to the tower, extra 10 bucks. Bring the kids.
We visited here on a Sunday morning before our flight in the afternoon. We bought tickets to go up in the tower and I was glad we did. Well worth the time and money. Our tour guide did a great job explaining the history of Balboa Park and the views from the top we're stunning. I highly recommend. The rest of the museum was okay, but I'm not really a museum person.
I went to the cannibal exhibit which was incredible. I had to go for a project for Anthropology; however it was far more than just an assignment. The exhibits are so interesting and the museum is so well organized. I left with a far better understanding of the topic and more than enough information to write my 12 page paper. I definitely plan to go back in the future and bring my family with me. Whether your alone or with people this is a great spot to visit! The area is beautiful and there are lots of places to eat nearby as well as many other attractions. Definitely plan to visit for the day if you have the time.
Great time. For $13, the experience is well worth it.
I would rate this museum 5 stars if it were advertised as a children's museum more prominently. I think the interactive exhibits are perfect for kids and families, but there is not much novelty for adults here compared to other museums. The beer and monster exhibits were enjoyable, as was the race history and sociology/ anthropology section. I can't complain much, I would just say I don't feel compelled to visit again.

Got to see an exhibit on racism that was impecably curated. Informational and insightful, an excellent source of knowledge.
Fun exhibits, had a great time!
Quick Facts: Size: Medium (2 Floors) Price: $13 Est. Time in Museum: 1.5 - 2 hours. Recommended for: Adults, Teenagers Best Feature(s): California Tower, Exhibit Designs. The most thought-provoking museum in Balboa Park, most of the exhibits at Museum of Man focuses on historical and current social issues that affect people today. Though they do have permanent cultural exhibits that such as the Mayan and Egyptian exhibits. But this isn't a museum where all you do is look at pretty paintings or cool arts and crafts from ancient cultures. You learn alot from these exhibits and there is alot of information in video, text and other media that is conveyed here. The strength of this museum is definitely the creativity in which they employ mixed multi-media elements and turning the exhibits into immersive environments that makes them fun and interesting to walk through. For example, the exhibit entitled 'Living with Animals' (Aug 2019), they built a fake living room because it went hand-in-hand with the theme of the domestication of animals. They also built an actual diner setting because the exhibit was discussing how food would go from the slaughterhouse to our plates. In the exhibit entitled Monsters (Aug 2019), they built a children's bedroom because of the common trope of monsters hiding under the bed. No two exhibits are designed the same, and no two displays in the same exhibit are designed the same. They really give alot of thought into designing these exhibits so that its just not text and pictures you're looking at. They throw the entire kitchen sink at you! Going up the California Tower is a MUST! You get unparalleled views of Balboa Park and views stretching all the way to Downtown and the bay. A really good way to end your visit. Although they usually have at least one exhibit aimed at kids, there isn't enough here for little children to enjoy for the whole visit for me to recommend this place for the entire family (for a better family oriented museum I'd recommend the Natural History Museum). However, Museum of Man is definitely in my Top 3 museums at Balboa Park. A great visit for sparking a discussion and conveying important ideas through fun and creative exhibits.
awesome unique museum in balboa park. so many museums to visit when in Balboa Park. There are all day museum pass, this one is wort a visit
Beautiful collections. Expert showcasing. Welcoming environment. Fascinating pieces. A definite must-see for residents and visitors!
Exhibits were a little strangely curated and some of the ones I was interested in were a little small. Still a good visit overall!
Small museum but nice
They had a cannibal exhibit which was very interesting they had many things you could interact with and was very enjoyable!
Spent a long time here. Every exhibit was great. Especially enjoyed the Post Card Secret exhibit. I have visited this museum many time through the years and never been disappointed.
If you're in Balboa park, this museum is probably worth checking out for a bit. The exhibits themselves are a bit of a hit or miss at times. Despite anthropology being a wildly interesting subject, I would myself at times questioning why certain exhibits were there, and definitely left with the impression that this wasn't entirely worth my time. The Maya section is fascinating, and the recent Cannibalism exhibit is interesting, but at times frustratingly vague and thin on details. Kids might enjoy this, while hardcore history buffs might not.
Cozy museum, great parking, nice trails, overall great place to simply talk and breathe in some good air. The coffee shops makes this place a plus also. They had a few good pieces here as well as a lot of literature to take in. This is good casual place to visit maybe after a meal or any ceremony.
Pretty fun place. Lots of interesting exhibits. My granddaughter loved the Monsters exhibit and the hands on participation. So many museums are do not touch. There were fun things to see, do, and touch. It was also a wide variety of topics and artists. Loved the interesting things about race and discrimination. Very thought provoking. I recommend visiting.
The Museum of Man was one of the most unique and fascinating museums I had ever been to. Ray was a fantastic tour guide!
Always fun when I'm in the San Diego area.
Some exhibits more interesting than others, but love that they make them interactive.
Lovely museum in the heart of my favorite park.
It was fun. Half the exhibits were closed and the tower was closed so maybe a reduced price on admission would have been nice. It's a neat building though.
This is an amazing museum. If you're going through the museum circuit of Balboa Park, make sure this is one of your stops. The museum has a collection ranging from all periods, to the fantastic, to the unbelievable. I especially enjoy the beer section.
It's so interesting and really made you think about certain topics in a different perspective. They also featured mummies, talked about race and had people send anonymous confessions. I enjoyed reading people's secrets.
Worth a visit interesting exhibit on history of canabilism.
Very interesting information on many things. My favorite was the history of beer.
We took the tower tour. The view was something else! All of Balboa Park was visible. There are 144 steps to climb, but it is quite manageable, with a pause at each level. Our guide I believe his name was Shaun, was a terrific story teller, with many interesting facts about the park. It will be closing for a remodel in next couple of months, so make plans soon to visit.
I imagined it diferently, if you don't wanna pay for disappointment wait until balboa holiday nights to visit...
This museum was absolutely amazing. The exhibit on race was extremely impactful and all should visit who get the opportunity.
Very interesting and educational. 10yo enjoyed it.
Came to view the Cannibal exhibit, but enjoyed the Secrets and Monster exhibits as well. Loved it so much that I ended up buying a season pass for entry to all the museums. The Museum is currently undergoing earthquake retro-fitting, but remains open. Hint: Sundays are incredibly jammed and parking is very difficult.
I absolutely love the current exhibit Post Secrets! It is a fascinating look at when people are anonymous, secrets can be shared more easily. Show runs through 2020.
I love this museum. My kids can get enough of the monsters exhibit. I like the post secrets most
Learned something new today!
Lovely building housing museum with exhibits on history of beer, monsters, race, Mayan civilization and cannibalism. Other exhibits were closed.
The building was majestic. The exhibits are interested and informative, but not the anthropological museum we were expecting. The PostSecret exhibit was quite interesting.
Very cool go see the cannibal show
Not anthropology. This museum is not so much a museum but more so an empty building that you pay $12 to walk through.
Amazing exhibits! Good for kids and adults. The Secrets exhibit was particularly interesting. Emotional, funny, ironic, and a honest look into the raw emotions, SECRETS, of everyone around us. Well done! All exhibits were great about blending visual displays and illuminating descriptions for a multitude of topics: race, origins, beer, the role of animals in society, ancient Egyptian culture, monsters, more... really great. Definitely a must-see in Balboa Park.
Great exhibits; what you expect from a museum. The beer exhibit was interesting and well done.
Worst museum i ever visited in my life! Waist of $13.00 did not learn a thing. Sooooo boring, Will never go there again!!!!!!!
Balboa Park has the best museums, and this one does not disappoint. Gives you a great insight to the history of man. Exhibits include artifacts from the Maya, Kumeyaay Indians, and Egypt. My boys love the see the mummies. There is a great children's area that goes with their Egyptian exhibit. Their special exhibits are always worth the extra price of admission.
Nice place lots of info. has a lot to see. 1 hour visit is a must. Place recommended
Several interesting and highly education exhibits. We spent 3-4 hours there. Also enjoyed the California tower which has a beautiful view of the park and city. The tour guide gives a short historical talk at the top of each flight so there is time to rest but even without the breaks, the climb is not hard.
Pretty cool. I expected more but that's ok. Cool things but I did not get to explore much.
Interseting exhibits in a gorgeous building. There are interactive exhibits for children and adults alike. Informative while also being fun. The museum is definitely centered on people and interesting and educational concepts like race, monsters, pets and etc.
Best example of "something for everyone! And a price to match. Full of wonderful stories and surprises. Things that make you go hum! & Oh wow!
I loved the cannabalism exhibit, the Ancient Greece exhibit is closed as well as the California Tower but still worth tbe $13 ticket
I just love this place. There were so many interesting facts, exhibits, and sites to see. Also, it's the heart of a cluster of other museums there in Balboa Park. If you're visiting San Diego, go to Balboa Park. While you're there, listen to Museum of Man. Also, stroll the grounds. Look at the Rose Garden, the succulent garden, the other museums, the architecture, and take in a day at Balboa Park. You won't be sorry.
