It is surprisingly original and full of interesting artifacts. It desperately needs and deserves some TCL inside and out.

This lovely old house is made from river rocks and is a part of the Arroyo Seco's history. I'm not sure when it is open to the public--I've only seen it from the outside, but even that is worth stopping by. Other reviewers have told much of the history, so read them as well.

If you’re looking for off-the-beaten-path adventures in L.A., then this place is perfect. It’s a museum focusing on quite the extravagant gentleman, Mr. Lummis. Make sure to look for his original plate photos in the main room, his photography from the 1800’s and 1900’s is incredible! Also, there was a PBS special about Lummis that is available on YouTube, so watching that in conjunction with a visit to this museum will add a lot!

I love this place, what history. It's amazing when you view the guest list of famous people that visited Charles Lummis and stayed in his home in the Arroyo Seco. The property need some maintenance but still worth seeing if you love LA or California history.

Great place to visit, alot history and good vibe within. Usually a LA Rec Parks Staff on site to answer questions and guide you through encampment. Hours of operation are slim so arrive early...learn about this Highland Park Institution.

The Docent , Christian I think, was passionate and knowledgeable, adding to the visit. The house is very interesting and the history is well explained. It's interesting, there is no admission as opposed to Heritage Square which is $10, yet this location was the better of the 2 and staffed by much happier people, making the visit to Lummis Home so much better.

Cool historic place to check out in LA. House is very small and I had to duck to enter doorways but that adds to it's charm. Knowledgeable tour guide on site.

Charles F. Lummis was an author, activist and historian who, after dropping out of Harvard in 1884, decided to walk from Cincinnati to Los Angeles. An amazing house built rock by rock by an amazing man. I loved the interior. The niches, the wood work, the carvings. This house has so much spirit and personality. A must see!

Home hand built by Charles Lummis. It is said he asked each of his guests to bring up a rock from the nearly arroyo to help with the building. The home gives a feeling of what earliest Los Angeles must have been like. Also visit the nearby Southwest Museum, whose collection was begun by Lummis.

Next to the oldest highway in Los Angeles, the Arroyo Seco Parkway other wise know as the 110, is an island of calm, shade and history. The Lummis House, also known as El Alisal, was built by Charles Lummis between 1897 and 1910. The Arroy Seco Parkway was built in 1940, it is my favorite freeway in Los Angeles. Today the house is a museum dedicated to Charles Lummis. The three acre property is a showcase of The drought-tolerant and native plants. The grounds are open two days a week this makes the area quite and some what secluded. Caravans, RVs and traveling folk park on adjacent Carlota Boulevard like wagon trains from a past era.

This is a wonderful historical landmark. On MOTA (Museums of The Arroyo), there are art and other activities for young and old that will make it a memorable experience. The staff are very helpful, friendly with a wonderful sense of humor. You are transported back in time through art, books, photographs, musical instruments and a lovely garden which pays tribute to California, water conservation and irrigation. The art, interior design and architecture is truly amazing for the period in which it was built. I quite enjoyed the books, musical instruments, black and white photos and the Indian art throughout the house. Plenty of education opportunities here.

This little tiny gem tucked away in Pasadena is one of my absolute favorite places to go. It's interesting to see and feel the energy when I go into that place because I can really feel and imagine what it was like living in that house back in the 1800s. The guy lummis who lived here was very connected into Society and also not. He was a rugged Man yet he also brought a lot of celebrities and people to his home because of who he was. I highly recommend going to go check out this home and seeing who Lummis was and all of the people who he affected along the way
