We had a great day looking at amazing art and culture. If you have some spare time in San Francisco the head off to the de Young Museum. You won't regret it While there I recommend you head to the museum's cafe. The food and service was great which made our day.

Super big museum. Free on a specific day of the first week of the month check fun cheap sf. Nice art, easy to walk and get lost in all the beauty. In the heart of golden gate park so you can picnic before or after the museum. Very beautiful building and atmosphere. I highly recommend.

Guille Vera

Beautiful exhibitions and art. A place to see the history of America's artists and history, paired with Indonesian an African rarities. Remember, the first Tuesday of each month, visits are free.

David G

Wonderful museum. Went for Tattoo exhibit. Having a membership is handy for quick trips.

Patton Pray

Nice exhibits that are pleasant to walk through, and the observation tower has a lovely view of the area. However be prepared for a lot of walking, as there are no benches in the galleries for patrons to rest during a visit. Also I enjoy reading the labels in museums, but several in the de Young were so poorly written that it took several passes to understand what they were trying to tell me about the piece or room, and some didn't contribute anything at all. Also many plaques for free standing pieces are placed on the floor in dim lighting, which can be a hassle for tall visitors and/or visitors with poor eyesight. Some small fixes to make the de Young more accessible and comfortable would easily make this a 5 star review.

Mostafa Akbari

Much more interesting as expected. The Ed Hardy experience was awesome, even for me as non tattoo person. We spent around five or six hours at the de Young Museum.

Gilda Garcia

Great exhibits. Cafe can be crowded during certain events. Has good food and moves pretty quickly.

Sanjana Singh

Went to attend the special Monet exhibition. It was slightly pricey, 35$. Completely worth it though. The exhibition had paintings from various different museums and private collections. It was a deep insight into the work of his later years. On a weekend, get there early to avoid the post lunch crowd. Other de young exhibitions are also definitely worth the visit. If you are a Dali fan, there are 2 unique portraits in there that are definitely worth checking out.

David Mitchell

Was only there for a short time, but looked interesting from what I had seen

Glenn Wilson

Love the museum. World class. Been many times. Always is a treat... :-)

Fred Bremerman

Monet exhibit convinced me to get a membership. So glad I did. The whole museum is something to behold. Be sure to check out the aircraft conning tower. Great views of the City. Next week it's off to visit the Legion of Honor, the "bonus" second part of membership.

Jake Katosic

What a beautiful museum space. I went to the de Young early on a Saturday for the current Monet exhibit and really enjoyed the entire museum experience. Just when I thought the galleries would end, there would be another gallery with something I really wanted to explore related to the previous exhibit. The space itself is very beautiful and utilized wonderfully for the exhibits currently on display. Also, it's in Golden Gate park, which gives you access to one of the most beautiful parks on the planet, as well as all the other activities available there. Golden Gate park rules and the de Young is no exception.

John E Henderson

Located in San Francisco @golden gate park, the venue is fabulous and the installation are world class. Check for schedules and be prepared to see some of the wonders of the art world. So many great things to see and do this really is bucket list worthy folks

Severa Rangel

Love visiting this museum. Went to see the Claude Monet art display. Beautiful art work. The display was just the right size, not over powering. If you are into art, this is a must see. The de Young Museum brings many great artists work. Look forward to the next.

June Mills

Monet later works includes his creative garden and pond. His water lily paintings were all done during this time. His paintings were all wonderful and showed how his technique became looser as his eyesight worsened. Very worthwhile.

Davin Payne

I saw the Ed Hardy exhibit and it was beautiful I had a great time.

Brett Higham

Great museum. We have been members for years. A great place for a visit if you’re from out of town as well.

John Ryan

Great place to take a break for the day or just enjoy art. I love coming here and looking at their Hudson River school collection upstairs. I also highly suggest checking out the observatory tower which gives an amazing view of SF.

Nytecruizer AC

Fantastic, a must visit. A wide array of exhibitions and just fabulous pieces.

Marian Hart

Amazing to me and I have been there about 20 times. Watch for what is coming. They bring artists that leave you with the feeling you have experienced a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Bill Leys

Wonderful museum in a wonderful city. We've been here at least 6x, it's a stunning architectural masterpiece, it has incredible artists on permanent display and the exhibits like Monet are phenomenal.

Leah Drapkin

Beautiful exhibits at Bouquets to Art, but the staff at the museum were extremely rude at closing. The booklet given to us when we checked in said the exhibit closed at 5:30, but by 5:10, the staff was kicking everyone out. It was fine, no major worries so we were heading out -- but we wanted to take a photo in front of the floral wall in the lobby and stood to wait while another couple did the same. When I walked up to the wall, a member of the staff refused to let us take the photo and stood between my partner (who held the camera) and myself. I have never been so appalled -- it literally would have taken 2 seconds for him to snap a photo and for us to continue to the exits. I will not be returning to the de Young after this experience.

Luchen Zhang

We visited de Young the first time last Saturday to see Monet - the late years. The line to buy tickets were long but fast processed. Show tickets can also be reserved online. It is by time so they can control the number of people in the showroom, which is good. The front desk lady was very helpful. She kindly suggested us to go for the 9th floor observation tower to see the whole view of the city since it was our first time there, which was incredible. The show was nicely planned. It showed Monet focusing on his waterlilies in his later years, the pond, the rose garden, the Japanese bridge, the house on the hill, same perspectives, different occasions. Great experience! With the ticket to Monet, you can also go to see Gauguin and the general exhibition. We also visited the cafe inside, it was really relaxing. When we were lining up for ordering, there was this nice lady handing out the menu for us. Chocolate madeleine was so yummy. We will definitely visit again.

Adam Lasnik

Good art, occasionally surly and rather unhelpful staff, awful parking, high prices. Also, often terse and unengaging placards describing the artwork and artists (though certainly better for the very-expensive special exhibits). Frankly, a disappointment after enjoying more welcoming and affordable art museums in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and London.

Dierdra Zeus

This is a wonderful museum! We only had a very short time to look around because we didn't know they were closing soon after we got there, but even so, we really enjoyed what we saw. It's a really cool building, easy to walk around in, and the Monet exhibit we saw was splendid!

ganesan saminathan

Saw the Monet paintings special exhibition and loved them. went around the museum to see other exhibits and it has other cool collection of items and paintings. Parking below the building at music concourse is a bit high at 33$ for a say but it's very convenient. U can walk around and see other parks that are nearby too.

Luming Tang

It’s a great place to visit. The museum is located in the middle of the park. The scenery is pretty beautiful outside. But honestly speaking, the art works are not as good and famous as those in Met, NYC. The ticket price is also pretty high. U even have to pay additional 35 dollars each for two special exhibitions including Monet. But I have to say, the view from the towel is really beautiful, which definitely worth the ticket.

Patty M

So happy we were able to see Monet's late years. Absolutely love this museum. Be sure to use Google lens here.

Vincent Chen

The exhibition of the late years of Monet is wonderful despite the crowd over the weekend and long waiting line to enter cafe. I will suggest to visit during the weekdays for several hours if possible which is more enjoyable and relax. The audio tour is highly recommended for the first time visitor to the exhibition which gives rich color about Monet and his masterpieces. Food wise which is okish. The cafe is partial serviced over the weekend. Waiter will reserve the available tables for the customers who has already ordered food which is very helpful. You don't need grab your food around to hunt the available or near available tables like most other museum. Its definitely one of the must have service during the busy weekend.

Brian Swalley

Wonderful art museum that offers a huge variety of art from different cultures, mediums, and time periods. There are parts of the building that feel like a history museum, and I wasn't quite expecting that.

Xiaoxiao Gao

Came here for the first time for its bouquet art show. It was amazing! The pairing of bouquet with its exhibition is fascinating. Honestly, I never even seen some of the flowers used in the bouquet. We came on the last day of this 7 days show, some of the flowers are quite limpy by then. I recommend you come early in the week. Garage parking is expensive, about $12 for 2 hours. Street parking is very hard to find unless you come early. Plan to spend a good 3 hours in the museum.

Alice Harris

There were two great exhibits. Monet the Later years and Gauguin a Spiritual Journey. Both were amazing. Did not have enough time to see much of the permanent exhibit but will be back.

Stacie Larsen

I went for the Ed Hardy exhibit. It was incredibly well-curated! It was pretty expansive and showed his art in unique ways that well represented his variety of mediums. My fave part was a panel of vertical comparisons between his drawings of the tattoo and then the executions on the bodies themselves. I didn't explore much of the permanent collection, but there was a 4-seasons piece I could sit in forever

Thomas San Francisco

It is a beautiful museum and quite large with many types of art from contemporary to global spanning from Africa to the America's. All art forms are represented sculptures, textile, arts and crafts, and even video. A virtual potpourri of areas sure to find something to captivate the visitor. I was enthralled by the larger panoramic landscapes but each exhibit was worth spending time immersed in the fine arts of that gallery.

Valerie Yeakel

Saw Monet exhibit. I'm not an art person but I try hard to expand my horizons. It was very interesting. Also on the second floor there is a small exhibit on fans from the 1700's. Amazing!!

Dmytro Filatov

It's okay.. Some staff members are extremely helpful, some are very grumpy. Ancient security policies. No backpacks above waist line, really? Very good temporary expos, and de Youngsters space for kids is great. Permanent expo: too much of the space and attention dedicated to African art / shamanic masks.

Jose Luis Cebrián Márquez

Amazing museum. Great variety of paints. Modern art mixed with traditional paint.

Sterling Bobbitt

A delightful mix of modern and classic and cultural treasures, well curated and massive. Japanese Garden next door is a plus. The tower provides some of the most spectacular views of the City, Exhibits are well organized and mobs minimized. Worth searching for a parking place.

Edward Santillan

Great architecture. Wide range of exhibits. Something for every taste. Had good fortune to visit Gauguin and Monet exhibitions. Friendly staff advised me to visit observation gallary for 360 degree view of SF.

Amber Toler

I went on a tour with museum hacks at the De Young and it was so fun! They have a great collection of art and our tour guide Julian provided a lot of cool facts and insight into the history of the pieces as well as the artist. The museum is in a beautiful location and it is easy to get to by bus (which I would recommend because traffic is terrible.)

William Norton

The Ed Hardy: Deeper Than Skin exhibit is amazing! It would be worth seeing just for the 2000 Dragons scroll alone. Don't miss it!

Milford

A first class institution worth visiting by both tourists and residents alike. Classic and modern art in their permanent galleries as well as world renown temporary exhibits provide year round entertainment and education for all ages.

s z

Came here during their Bouquet to Art event, which host in Jun 2019 ( prior years usually host in April, and the event last for one week). We went on the last day of the week, the flowers are note as fresh, some of them are dead, but most of them and overall still very pretty. It spread out on the first and second floors in multiple rooms. The ticket is about $28 dollar for adult, and $19 for student. They sell flowers outside of the museum for only $5 a large bouquet.

Daniel R

This place is a perfect way to spend the day.its huge and its modern and the building is a art work in itself and the observation floor is spectacular. I reccomend this highly if ur in San Francisco for a couple days u have to check the museums schedule to see who or what is featured you wont be disappointed.

Tess Goff

This Museum has great special exhibits. It has amazing collections ranging from American artists like Andy Warhol to Georgia Okeiffe and amazing European painters such as Monet and Matisse. It’s worth checking out the special exhibits they are short with poignant pieces. Bathrooms are clean and Parking is close. Try to go on a weekday as the park is rather busy on the weekends. Oh yeah and the museum cafe has indulgent treats as well as healthy snacks. Get out see some art up close and personal! Check it out Claude Monet’s signature

marvin s

One of the finest museums in the world. Always something new and exciting. It’s located in the fabulous golden gate park.

Karen Ruhleder

Excellent special exhibitions (and a great permanent collection). I became a member because I get to bring a guest each time I go, which is a great deal. This year I've been to see the Contemporary Muslim Fashion exhibition, the Gauguin, the Monet, and today to see Bouquets to Art, in which floral artists create displays that evoke pieces in the collection.

Lan Khuc

One of San Francisco best museums. A must stop if you love arts

Raul Crespo

Really nice and interesting collection from several contemporary cultures. And theres is a moderno tatoo art exhibit nowadays, perfectly good reason to go enjoy and learn. Free entrance today (tuesday). Recommended

Anbin Liu

This is a good place for people who love art. Thats a fantastic place, but unfortunately, it's hard for me to totally understand the art work in the museum. Also, I highly recommend you go up to the top of the tower. The view at there is great, especially in a sunny day!If you have any problem, just go ahead and ask the staff inside. All of them are friendly and willing to help you. I hope you can have a good break here and enjoy the art.

Denis Bykovsky

I came with my 1.5 year old and 3 year old. They had fun at youngster lab. Sculpture park outside is also awesome

Kerry Ann Hawkins

Nice collection of art. Beautiful museum in golden Gate park in San Fransisco. Art from artist you know but also artists I have never seen.

Matthew Xuereb

This is an average museum. It is a moderate sized museum that houses several types of art from American to African. The pieces on display were nothing too spectacular. This museum will be underwhelming and is entirely skippable if you've been to several large museums or are coming from a major city(i.e. NYC, London, Toronto, etc). For those who thoroughly enjoy museums and haven't gotten a chance to go to any big ones yet, this is a fine way to spend an afternoon

Amy Boles

Explore the collection in this wonderful structure! Be sure to go to the top of the tower for a great view of the city. We went to see the Monet and Gauguin shows - both were wonderful. A walk in the sculpture garden was a welcome breath of fresh air after taking in so much inside the building. For those who love art - you might want to consider the membership. If you go more than once with a companion, it pays for itself pretty quickly. Just a note, parking in the basement (entrance at 10th and Fulton) is pricey, but worth it on a rainy day. The cafe has a nice selection of hot and cold foods, but not for the budget minded.

The deYoung Museum is spacious and has wonderful permanent collections as well as visiting exhibits. I went to see the Claude Monet's exhibit of his paintings that he created in his later years. The descriptions of the artist's life and art focal points in the various galleries help enhance the enjoyment of the Monet's masterpieces. Interspersed in the descriptions are actual photos of Monet's home and expansive garden with water lilies and a Japanese bridge. I always go see the permanent collections of Dale Chihuly, an innovative glass sculptor who creates colorful blown glass art pieces.

Arthur Pines

Great range of art. Even a few Dali's and lots of American Art. The view from the lookout deck is fantastic.

Andrew Brož

Great general collection. Beautiful views from the observation tower. Now free for SF residents on Saturdays.

Bette Barr

Ride, walk or fly, but don't fail to see the Monet exhibit featuring his late work. Culled from many museums plus some private owners, the paintings highlight some of his series including the famed water lillies. I was struck by the intensity of color in several paintings. You can stand quite close, about two feet away and study the brushstrokes and technique.

Bridget M

Made a special visit to see the ‘Bouquets to Art’ exhibit. It had been a few years since we last saw this same exhibit. It was super packed, people bumping into each other and forgetting others are trying to appreciate the art… was not as enjoyable as last time. The exhibit was still amazing and beautiful, however! Bonus was the Gauguin exhibit - LOVED IT and able to really enjoy it, not near as busy as the Bouquet to Art. And for some reason, people were more respectable in the Gauguin exhibit. Beautiful museum in general, totally recommend.

Tracy Flores

Loved the museum. It was my first time going and can’t believe I didn’t go sooner. Aside from the museum itself, you have an amazing 360 view at observation deck, the gardens and the food is decent. Went specially for the Monet exhibit, which was awesome. I just wanted to sleep there.

Bobbi Stuart

Absolutely amazed by the Monet show. Incredible opportunity to see magical creations. So appreciated the experience!

Vincent Aragon

Cafe, store, cafe, store. Best part no admission needed. Sit outside of the cafe less noisy and the tent is nice and cozy

Kenneth Cheng

Great museum with an excellent deck to view the whole SF area. Artifacts contain both modern and historical categories. Very relaxing to walk around . Kids under 17 are free.

Beck Marquis

I had heard about the de Young but had never had the time to go. So glad we could now! There was a special Tatoo exhibit that we did not go to but we did see most of the permanent collection as well as a special exhibit on sculptures and crafts from island nations that was very good. What stood out for us was the amazing Multi-channel video "in Pursuit of Venus (infected)" by Lisa Reihana. "Set against a Tahitian background echoing the Dufour wallpaper that inspired the work, in Pursuit of Venus (infected) draws on theater and animation traditions to reclaim the history of "discovery" between Pacific Islanders and European explorers." The film is a continuous loop lasting 64 minutes if you stay that long and we could hardly tear ourselves away. The artist carefully recreates rituals and ceremonies and violence as cultures clash and try to dominate. If you are hear here this is a must see!

Ishuia Credit

The tower was amazing. You can see the whole city!

Richard Robertson

This week features "Bouquets to Art" - a delightful integration of flower arrangements and the museum's art. A lot of fun.

Arthur Crowther

This day, it was a lot of people. I am a Member, so I choose days where I can wander in space and peace among the exhibits. You will more interesting people, too.

Lana Chipiga

The museum offers a free Saturday for San Francisco residents which a very useful to spend a couple hours exploring the existing or new exhibits. Stuff people are always nice, friendly and helpful.

Meltem Ozcelebi

Great 360° view of the city at the top floor. Good layout. Good selection of art exhibits.

Pacific*MM Tarot

The De Young is to beautiful, accessible in parking, toilets, etc. It has fascinating exhibits and a super yummy but a bit spendy cafe.We go to spend the day, dining there as a treat. It's always been positive experience. In GoldenGate park it's such lovely grounds and much to see,do nearby. The staff have always been friendly & helpful to accommodate my needs as a disabled person.

Spring Power

I liked the museum (building, architecture, even the "design, technic and ambience" of the restroom) but the exhibited art is ... "Meh". The regular price was already high. We paid in total $25 for the permission to the special exhibition that was somehow not even existing/recognizable as extended section. The whole basement was closed for construction.

Allen Watson

Though we had lived in the Bay Area for a couple of years at one point, we never managed to visit this place. It is located in Golden Gate Park across a large plaza from the natural history museum. There is a huge parking deck underground beneath the plaza. You can also park along the nearby roads. Initially we had trouble locating how to enter the de Young Museum. It is a large modern-type structure, but there are no signs. We saw a lot of people entering at the extreme left but that turned out to be their cafe. The main entry is in the center-right through a passageway. The ticket lady was very friendly and helpful. Per her suggestion, we started in their 9-story tower for views, which was nice. It is high enough to make the views worthwhile. We next descended and went to the temporary Gauguin exhibit. It was okay; I was sorry the Monet exhibit had closed a month ago, as I'd probably have preferred that. It appears they have frequent traveling exhibits, though. We then checked out at least part of the permanent collection, which was also okay. There is also a sculpture garden located at either end of the museum, which was interesting. If you are even marginally interested in art, this is a worthwhile stop.

Na Ly

Hours: 9:30m - 5pm Closed on Mondays. Contemporary, Fine Arts, Ed Hardy exhibit.

Steve Tjiang

A medium size museum! Honestly I haven't seen much of their permanent collection but I have seen several special exhibits. All excellent. The museum isn't large and feels very intimate. Make a trip up to the top of the tower and get a great view of San Francisco (on a no fog fall day!)

Ruth Villasenor

Great Ed Hardy exhibit currently on display, if it weren't for the horrible parking this would be a 5 star review

Derrick Mapp

The de Young has world class curators who display their adept skills in both traditional display styles with ever evolving technologies in exhibiting each piece into a cohesive story-telling whole. The Docents are amazing and well trained as are the security staff. The museum itself is a work of high art and contains “secret” art work as you explore both its grounds.

Barry Schmell

Amazing architecture to begin. You must go to the observation tower which off the main entrance. Spectacular views and perspectives of San Francisco. I saw the Money exhibit which was excellent.

Andrew Stock

This museum is a work of art, of late, in my opinion the space is more interesting than the shows featured. I don’t believe that’s a dealbreaker, I enjoy the boldness of some of the choices, and leave myself room to change my opinion. I have faith and renew my membership religiously, the permanent exhibits are worth supporting and revisiting.

Clelia Lambourne

I love art and they had a Monet exhibition at the time. Lots of room to walk around easy access to the not so able to climb. Good amount of seating for people to rest their tired limbs a wonderful tower access by lift for views of San Francisco.

Helen Leong-Luke

Get a membership, and GO! ...with a friend..to Bouquet to Arts.. to new and permanent installations..we are SO LUCKY to have the de Young in our back yard ... 'have 3 adult kids that reflect appreciation for arts in our city!

Gabe Lavelle

Always inspirational. Not crowded weekday afternoons. Enjoyed immediate entry to Monet. All the galleries are worth exploring. The lobby and observation tower are open without paid admission. The gift shops have wonderful variety of unique merchandise.

Susan Cruikshank

The museum was wonderful. However the parking was a disaster. We had to be in line to pay for parking for 20 minutes, THEN, one hour in a cue of cars to exit the garage! Motors going in closed space filled with carbon monoxide. I was light headed before exiting! Someone needs to look into this.

Eileen M

We live minutes away from the De Young...easy to walk over and amble in. Extraordinary! Breathtaking! One of a kind. Good restaurant. Spend time - take the elevator to the top!

Colby Parsons

Has a great collection of both contemporary and historic pieces. The exhibits were well paced and well organized. In particular I liked the section with landscape paintings. There is a tower in the musem with a beautiful lookout over golden gate park.

Loretta Bowen

Lovely place! Great exhibit. Wonderful day here. Only drawback parking for about 6 hours was over $25. There is some free street parking, but it will add additional walking to a day when you will have very tired feet already.

Shai Ghelberg

The best museum in SF in my opinion. The collection is amazing and the statue garden is beautiful. The park is really fun to visit. There's a great view from the top. The museum offers a decent selection of places to eat or drink. There's a coat check service that's free.

Luis Fernando

Been there before It's a too museum just not really my type Their cafeteria was pretty good too but their food is a bit complex for a picky eater like myself so I just had their turkey sandwich which was really good, my girlfriend got chicken tenders and French fries which were also pretty good

LA Glickman

The building is very modernistic. Regrettably I was on a tour and it did not include the upper floors where the art is exhibited. So I can only provide you with my limited experience which left me hungry for more. There is no charge for the first floor where you can view some art, and also there is the museum shop which has some unique items. You can take the elevator up to the top floor for beautiful view of the area. My favorite area was to go outside where they had several sculptures exhibited. You could spend a whole day in this vicinity because the science museum is right across the Plaza, the Japanese garden so directly to the north and there is an outdoor Amphitheater. This is just a lovely area that is provided for the inhabitants of this very crowded City. I think that if I lived here I would spend a lot of time here cuz it's very relaxing and calming.

David Stocks

Interesting building. Temporary Monet exhibition really very good. Didn't like much of the other art, though. (Okay, I don't "get" a lot of it. I think good art should appeal to everyone irrespective of education.) Canteen area is very disorganized and noisy. You can't queue separately for coffee.

Taylor Lyon

Great museum and we were lucky to be here the same time as Monet. Oh, what a special exhibit this is....so many of his works all in one spot, wonderfully displayed and explained. Also a smaller exhibit of Gauguin....while not as many of his more famous works, you learn much about his life. Be sure to go up to the top floor for a panoramic view of the city.

E P

De Yeung is in the middle of one of the great and storied city parks in the western U.S. its next to the Japanese Tea Garden that is just a great peaceful spot. Across the way is the California Academy of Science. Back to DeYeung: its impressive, simple and run by pros that know how to let the art tell its stories. Staff are nice. No uptight enforcers. Nice gift shops. 9th floor observatory is pretty cool. 360 degrees of the SF area from up above. The restaurant works and is there when you need a break and food. Like this place you feel good going, attending and after. SF is rightfully proud of this little gem.

Bratati Karmakar

Hmmm what a beautiful museum. It will take around 3-4 hours to tour the whole museum. Take a docent tour.

Ethan L

Closed without posting anywhere online (google map) or on the site. Hard to find the entrance, on the quiet day. And the staff (still working) looked at me as if I should have known. Even the airport tourist information guide folks did not know they were closed on Mondays.

Tim Monahan

Excellent museum that also has a great lookout over San Francisco Really enjoyed the Mexican artefacts It also unfortunately represents the looting of these sites and the inequality that most of this museum is made up from “private” collections...

Rory Hertzfeld-Hearse

Pleasantly surprised and wowed! Great art, primo location, and the best views of San Francisco!

JJB

We really didn't do much there but after walking around Golden Gate Park, it was the perfect place to stop and have a cold cocktail. Service and atmosphere were both great.

Laura Kaump

Not a museum person but what beautiful art! Can't wait to go back. Parking in the structure was $26 for 4 or 5 hours. Yikes!

Tiffany anderson

Attended a special exhibit called Monet:The Late Years. Amazing pieces from around the world. Beautiful contemporary building! Multiple Exhibits in different Galleries throughout the Museum. Varying styles and media for each exhibit. Tons of space even though hopping, loved that the security didn't pester you when taking pictures or video and you could get REALLY close to the different works, as long as you behave accordingly. Was really impressed by the location in SF, across the loop from Cal Academy, parking free if willing to walk about half a mile and the parking Garage has plenty of spaces (was $21 for 4 hours). Has an entrance right to the parking garage! So handy when raining.

drajaniku

Located in Golden Gate Park, this museum is always interesting with amazing art and great docents. The museum's design allows for the flow of people even when close to capacity. A great place for groups, families, and of course, couples and individuals. You'll love it here!!

Brandon Pardi

The GA admission and what you get for it ain't bad. The feature exhibit when I went (Monet) was really cool but unsurprisingly pretty expensive. Parking is always a nightmare too. Not a huge fan of stills of people or African art and theres a lot but there is a nice variety.

Lindsey E

Never been before but will come back. Very well done exhibit on Monet. Easy to see all the pictures in about an hour. Get the audio guide as it provided context for the paintings. Also saw the exhibit on Gauguin the same day. That gallery was a little more crowded but able to spend time with the art.

Jonathan Carmichael

Went for the Monet and Gauguin exhibits. I very much suggest you check them out if possible. It's very woth the money!

Alastair Mottram

Great views of the city from the observation tower, and best of all free to go up

Gabriel-Cat DiFelice

Do not buy on Groupon!! I bought on Groupon and they put wrong date; the museum then refused to let me in even though the ticket was unused. Credit card fraud dispute has been filed.

nafeesa F

Nothing great and barely any collections from well known artists. I've been to better museums in L.A. and New York.

Carolou Terrell

For starters, the location in the glorious, urban Golden Gate Park is easily accessible. The museum structure is an accolade to the art of architecture, so visually light it appears ready to take flight, yet truly massive in size. The welcoming door security is almost apologetic about having to glance into a purse or briefcase. In general the staff is gracious and accommodating. Special shows are superbly designed to enlarge the viewer's understanding of the culture to which the artist responded and the psyche fueling that response. The fortunate viewer leaves with an intimate compassion for the artist and a deeper understanding of the artist's life and era. Plan to spend the day, with excellent dining and extensive permanent displays to browse, study, and contemplate in the spacious, airy halls and diverse galleries.

Jared Ramsauer

The De Young museum is located on the edge of Golden Gate Park adjacent to the California Academy of Sciences. It us situated in a beautiful courtyard with 3 majestic fountains and beautiful landscaping. The De Young features a free lookout point at the very top of the building, which is a beautiful modern copper structure, a piece of art in itself. Featuring great variety of rotating exhibits and a vibrant permanent collection. Very much worth checking out and at a reasonable price, especially for students. Would definitely recommend.

James Cubbage

Gorgeous museum, where even the copper facade is art. Not the best for sculpture, but good range of paintings spanning wide range of early America. Usually have an interesting special exhibit that costs extra. Audio program available (my youngest loves visiting IF museums have an audio program).

Ray Kuryla

I love the De Young Museum because, when I get into the quieter galleries, the museum has the feel of the "traditional" museums where it's hushed, and I can wander from gallery to gallery in that quiet atmosphere. It's nostalgic to me. (These comments are similar to the comments I made for the Legion of Honor.) I love it enough that I have decided to become a member. Special exhibits come and go; it's the permanence of the De Young that draws me in.

Catharine Davis

Outstanding view of the city from the observation deck, and interesting art and sculptures on display. But admission is pretty pricey and I qualify for a senior discount

Miriam Lopez

Beautiful area to visit the museum itself can be seen in 2 hours and the last time I visited was during the bouquet to art annual exhibit, which is a highlight if you are in town. There's parking available nearby if you arrive before noon it should be available. There's a cafe and free water inside; snacks to go. A great place to go with a friend I wouldn't recommend for families for small kids.

Veronica Bolognesi

Very fascinating museum with lit of fun and live fo the arts; there's also an observation desk! The cafeteria is tasty and has also a garden.

Zuzana Bodikova

Really great Monet exhibit - thoughtfully curated works of late years, very cohesive story. Exquisite art goes without saying. Gaugin exhibit was good too, however, much more scattered and curators did not manage to focus viewers interest fully. In general, the museum is great even without travelling exhibits.

Jane McLeod

They offered an 8:30am admittance to the breath taking Monet exhibit. So lovely to be able to walk slowly through the exhibit and truly take in the scope of this carefully curated collection. No noise. No crowd. Hopefully, these early admissions will continue.

Kai Osorio

Late monet was a masterful example of the thought and dedication put into the exhibitions at the De Young museum. They also offered to have me come in before museum hours to check out the exhibit with way fewer people walking around and it was an absolutely beautiful experience.

Miss Joli

It was an amazing experience. The museum had great display and I had a great time learning about history and furnitures and art. Very well navigated and the 360 view from the top was awesome.

Good to return after many years. We used to come here (the original DeYoung building) for field trips growing up in San Francisco. Still love it.

Andrea Espejel

Loved this museum, it has a lot of different cultures displayed and the special expositions are huge. Totally recommend it !

Robert Hill

Interesting collection. Many silly leftish or modernist works but also wonderful classical stuff. Special exhibits are pricey. Don’t miss the (free) tower. The building itself is a work of art. From the tower, you can look around the city and look down through the eucalyptus trees to get a little vertigo. Beautiful surroundings. Parking is a challenge.

Steven N.

Went for the Monet exhibit. Was extraordinary. Great museum. A little busy but it was a sunny day. If you haven't seen his work from the later years...do so!

Devonté Cooper

What a selection! I really do love the pieces out and I'm grateful for the help from staff in directions. Though I will say, the food as with all places such as these are well overpriced though tasty nonetheless.

It's not a very big museum but it's a nice museum to visit. I like the monthly free days. Don't forget to visit the tower. A lot of people miss it. It's open to the public at all times even if you don't go in to the museum.

ANother San Francisco Museum you must see. you will enjoy it , and reasonably priced. Another City Tresaure.

The best part of our visit to "The de Young", as it is known, was something I missed on the way in. The first picture is of a crack in a paving stone of the entry patio that I first noticed on the way out of the museum. Seems like just a crack, but it runs through a few paving stones, and then -- amazingly -- up the side of a large square-cut 1'x1'x3' stone block. And across the top! And then down the other side! At this point, my suspicions were aroused, and then -- as it continued across more paving blocks to another stone where it repeated its earlier crossing -- completely elevated. "Is this an Andrew Goldsworthy natural sculpture?" I ducked back inside to ask. "Indeed it is," I was told. "There's a sign outside the entry courtyard." And indeed there is, as you can see in the second picture.

A very interesting collection of art and historical items from all over the world. I wasnt expecting much but i was blown away by everything inside. The price tag is a bit steep for what it is though. Definitely give yourself a few hours to explore everything (1.5-2.5)

Harry Whittlesey

Always enjoy ourselves here. Ed Hardy exhibit was great.

Andrew Lee

The de Young Museum is a great museum to visit when in SF. It’s located in the gorgeous Golden Gate Park. The art and artifact collection is very extensive and takes a few hours to see everything. A highlight is definitely the tower that is several stories high that gives you panoramic views of the bay. Definitely recommended.

I just went to opening of Ed Hardy: Deeper Than Skin at the de Young. This is the first museum retrospective of the renowned tatto artist's work. It was pretty amazing. The de Young's permanent collection is good, but it's their special exhibits, like this one, that really shime & keep me coming back. This exhibit is through Oct 6. Go!!!

Cody

Tourist attraction, observation tower closes at 4:30... then why even have the tower if you close before the main wave of tourism can arrive? This is only a side attraction at best and probably only locals will ever get to make use of it at it's fullest. *Golf Clap for foresight*

Culture and art speaks to my soul. We had the privilege of viewing Monet's later years and my soul wept at the beauty I beheld. DeYoung does an amazing job curating art and allowing the public to enjoy. Annual pass is the only way to go for locals. I usually drag hubs or willing child who is home that weekend. Decent cafeteria food and solid art. I can't wait to see the next exhibit.

Aw Pan

A beautiful museum, great architecture, collections and description of the art work. Would like to come back next time. Takes at least two hours to visit

Stephen Wong

Great museum with lots of art to enjoy and they always have some sort of special exhibit going on making return visits a must. Located in the beautiful Golden Gate Park.

Te'ara Dominique

One of the best museums I have ever been too

Frank Marone

Went for Monet exhibit which was fabulous collection of Monet paintings gathered from around the country and the world, but limited to his later years. Also some Gauguin, plus regular collections. All wonderful, clean and well staffed, pleasant environment. And, they have a nice cafe! Do it!

Pat Jurgens

*Extremely rude staff...and apparently they have a reputation for it that goes back years. Upon our return from a disappointing experience, I read reviews on google and TripAdvisor, and reports of bizarre staff behavior go back to 2016. TODAY'S VISIT: We frequent the great museums of the world and are members and donors (now former) to this museum and The Legion of Honor. We were literally pounced upon and barked at by the staff upon entering: stand here! Umbrellas there! Don't sit on that bench! (When asked why they replied: "People might want to rest there!" We weren't people?) It went on for the first 2-3 minutes after our group of 5 entered and we were all shocked. An extraordinarily unpleasant way to commence what should be a lovely and uplifting experience viewing the great works of Monet. And a final note: housing the world's greatest works in this enormous abomination of a building borders on sacrilege! Management: Can you really not find better help?

Jamie Clift

Very nice friendly staff and interesting and diverse exhibits. I really enjoyed the Ed Hardy exhibit very creative and unlike any other art museum exhibit I've seen. It's a must see for tattoo lovers.

Henry Kim

Good place to go to see some artwork, but it does get very crowded with families, especially young kids, and tourists. The lines to purchase tickets on weekends are extremely long and the insides are packed. If you can find a good weekday to go that isn't a holiday, it would definitely feel better.

R. Lee Donaldson

This is a fantastic museum with numerous collections. The variety of art and different exabits is vast. You can definitely spend a lot of time there. My favorite part was the cultural tribal art from around the world. So many exotic and captivating items to look at in one location. You can spend hours there just looking at every detail. Not much for modern art, but if you are, there is plenty of all kinds for your viewing. During the visit, there were Monet and Gauguin exhibits going. Again not my favorite, but amazing to see so many items all come together. However, because of the popularity, it was a zoo of viewers to contend with. I recommend researching when it is slowest if you want to fully enjoy the exhibits without having to be elbowed, wait for bad picture takers, or listen to noisy chit chat by disrespectful visitors. Communication by staff was very poor and sort of unfriendly. They ask you to hold you backpack or bag in your hand, but don't tell you why. Finally was told there was a bag check, but only well into the exhibits. Of course there seems to be numerous people disregarding this supposed security measure. Check it out for sure, but try to plan the time of your visit as best as possible to avoid the masses.

The Ed Hardy exhibit is temporary I think. I liked it.

stacey bellis

Went to see the Ed Hardy exhibition, fabulous! Run don't walk to see it. Audio visual exhibits are worth the price of admission. Exceptional public institution worthy of support. Get a little culture for god's sake!

Łukasz Mrugasiewicz

Architecture is stunning, Exhibits always interesting. This is a fabulous museum. We spent an hour wandering the permanent collection and a special show. Don’t miss the viewing area on the 9th floor of the tower — great city views.

Rick Thoman

Wife and I spent off Friday at de Young. Saw Monet exhibit. Great day. Excellent exhibit. Great lunch.

Rupert Young

Went to see the Monet special exhibit which was very nice. Also walked around the regular exhibits which were pretty interesting and varied. They have a number of thematic collections especially different periods of US art.

Judith Tichy

It is a beautiful building. The upper floor is a spectacular observation deck with incredible views of the city. You can go to the upper floor without paying admission. Permanent collections are great along with most of the special exhibits.

Mike Ransom

Great facility with lots to explore and view. Ed Hardy tattoo exhibit is fascinating!

Jason Haupt

This place was really nice! Updated in so many ways and the exbihits have a great well designed flow. I went for the special exhibits which didn't disappoint. FYI, You will have to either carry your backpack or check it for free if you come with one.

Mischa Stephens

Monet exhibit was amazing. But the popular exhibits are always too packed with people. Wish they did a better job of scheduling when people come thru so it isn't so packed.

Ryan Gaska

Really cool! We went for the Ed Hardy tattoo exhibit. There is a 5 dollar discount if you have a tattoo!
