REVIEWS OF California State Railroad Museum IN California

Jian Cui

Cool place to learn US rail road history.

Jessie Dixon

My son was over the moon when he saw the Golden Spike. He said he's wanted to see it his whole life. It is so great to be able to see his eyes as history comes to life. It can be a challenge to get kids excited about learning history, but this museum makes it a cinch. Trains are built into so much of american history.

Kristyn Jones

This place is so wonderful I was not expecting to enjoy myself as much as I did!!! And it was much bigger than I thought it would be. My 8yr old daughter had a blast and I think my brother I might have enjoyed it more though lol. Super fun for all ages. Truly enjoyed ourselves!!! Definitely a place to check out and I will definitely go back again!!!!

Sharon Chavis

A history lesson of trains combined with an experience of riding these historic and amazing trains. The conductors are very knowledgable. Adults and kids alike will love this.

Todd Zurcher

Incredible place to visit. We learned how the railroad was built, history of the first transcontinental railroad, and how the east and west were finally connected. They have some amazing pieces at the museum including old locomotives, rail cars, dining cars, post office rail cars, and the commemorative gold spike used in the completion ceremony. Amazing history of the area, America at the turn if the century, and very fun if you enjoy trains. They even had an entire floor just for toy and model trains. A must stop if you are in the area!

Jessica Macy

Kids absolutely loved it. Stop a very friendly and helpful and family oriented.

Josh Rogers

Kids loved this place. Lots of neat history and huge train displays to see. A few you can walk through. High speed simulator was shut down quite a bit before closing so that was disappointing.

Paige Christine

Fun 3 mile ride on the train. You have the option to site outside or inside. I suggest outside there and back, the train doesn't go fast enough for the wind to bother you

camille bell

I enjoyed myself immensely and the staff was knowledgeable and willing to answer questions

Ashley Osbourn

Very fun and interactive! Great museum to bring kids, and brings out the kid in you as well! Recommend watching the historic movie before entering the exhibits, it will set the tone for the rest of your experience. Definitely plan to bring friends and family back to visit!

michael dewese

Very nice tour guides . The train cars are amazing. Great attention to all the displays. Clean bathrooms nice gift shop

Philip Starkey

Great place to take someone interested in learning the history behind it all. Not awesome for super little ones. But even the area surrounding is great! Cool riverfront, neat to watch boats up and down the river!

Christopher Wharton

I love this place. My kids love trains, so we go as much as possible. Great staff and many historical artifacts.

Amanda Adam

A must do if you are in town! Family friendly environment

FrDs Main Hoon Na

It's worth to see old and latest train. You will experience the whole Journey of Train since it introduced.

Ann Grimes

Interesting historical museum. Fun for all ages.

Judith Barro Johnson

Very nice! They take care of the museum very nicely.

Rudy Delgado

Fun place for the family. They have 3 differnt floors with a lot of fun interactive activities. Great place to learn about trains and they left thier mark on history and today.

Ben

Pretty cool experience. Lots of trains in excellent condition. You can walk inside and interact with many simulated setups like they would have been when the train was in use. There's even a whole section on model trains going all the way from kids toys to collectors models. Fun place to spend the afternoon!

Uzma Ali

This place was fantastic and it was big! All the classic trains here for everyone to see. The movie in the beginning was most informational and for a second when the screen lifted to reveal the entrance to museum, I felt like I was in Jurassic Park. The settings were amazing and the stories told were really touching. You can enter a bunch of trains and they show you how they used to be set up. The history was epic.

Janet Hanstad

We are not huge museum fans but this museum is a lot of fun. The museum is very well done and it is amazing to go into the trains. Also so much history. It is one of my favorite museums. Well worth it.

Sheila Broumley

I went in thinking..."trains are okay, but a whole museum dedicated to them?"... I came out amazed and humbled by my newfound knowledge. Go! You won't be sorry.

Faustino Perez

Took my 7 year old twins. They loved the hands-on experience. Boarding the trains was a lot of fun. One of the trains swayed and had flashing window lights to give you the experience of “riding the train.” The tour guides in each train were very knowledgeable and pleasant. The museum shoppette was great at the end of the experience (except when you have 7 year old twins and they want everything) ;)

Teresa Starnes

School-age children will definitely enjoy this if they're interested in trains at all. Pleasant staff and very knowledgeable. A comprehensive history of the railroad in California. Very good static displays. A must see when you visit Sacramento.

Michael or Ruth Schmelzer

Outstanding! Interesting and fun. Very well organized and staffed.

Mitzi Magana

If you are a Train LOVER! This is a MUST see! Great for the entire family to experience this!

Janne Wissel

Don't miss this fantastic museum even if you're not a railroad fan you will find it fun and interesting. It's also blessedly cool in the summer.

Sergio Lopez

Good Museum, show a bit history about Railroad, the most interesting is the person who works there have a huge knowledge about it.

Michael Berbena

Lots to see and do for all ages. Great calif history for the kids.

Chithra C Menon

The entire display is very good and entertaining for kids and adults alike. Especially loved the toy train sections.

Murli KN

Excellent display of old railroad, Guides very nicely explained the history of railroad. Only $ 12.0 admission seemed on the higher side.

Victor Rallo

Really nice! Staff informative and friendly. Over priced don't bring children, only go if your a train enthusiast.

Hope Rabinovitz

Always fun to look at the exhibits especially now that it is the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Model train section great for kids.

Cezar Rizea

Awesome place, went here with the family and I had a blast! They have a lot of engines and different cars. If you like trains you will absolutely love this museum! The gift shop is outrageously expensive, ended up buying a bunch of things for the kid anyways, it most likely goes towards maintenance and acquiring more stuff so I don’t feel too bad. If you’re in the area and have the time, visit during work hours m-f and place will be pretty empty so you can snap all the pictures you like.

Alison Doering

Really well done railroad museum! Loved the preservation and ability to get in and see the different types of cars and see what life on the rails would be like.

Lewie Foster

It's a wonderful place for you or your train loving family member to go spend time together. Exhibits rotate on occasion, so there's new things to see. They have a great play area for little ones, which is being refurded to be even more fun, to play and meet new friends. Admission is reasonable and if you have a train obsessed little one the memberships give you 12 months of access for one low price.

Brendan Ochoa

One of the best places to go with a family! I highly recommend purchasing the membership package (as low as $50 per year) and provides unlimited museum access for your family for the whole year as well as annual credit for the train rides too. They have a winter polar express themed ride that we look forward to and of course the museum itself is the main attraction. With dozens of engines and cars to look at and walk through, this museum can provide hours and hours of entertainment and inspiration for all ages. For the little kids, don’t forget to enjoy taking them to the model train area where they get to play with other kids too.

Tave Bynum

Great experience all the way around. Many sights to see and things to learn. Plus a fun play area for the kids. All the volunteers are very helpful as well. I highly recommend a visit.

Carole Johnson

Photographic & narrative history of the birth of the US continental railway and its development with honest historical data on who built the railways and the employees who worked them. Wonderfully restored historic train cars to visit, plus engines. Great for train enthusiasts of all ages.

Crystal Jensen

Great entertainment for all: young and old. My father-n-law absolutely loved all the exhibits. We were able to enjoy our company for several hours at this well designed and equipped museum. I believe this is one of the top two railroad museums in the country. The neighboring old town Sacramento next door has lots of fun places to see and things to do along with some veru good places to eat. Also, the neighboring large river paddle boat has lots of history and fun to be around. I got some great Railroad ties at the gift shop - my father-in loved his.

Charles Brindle

DVDs. Great exhibits and a live stream excursion train

Kitt Katt

I've been twice and still haven't seen all of it. So much to do, so much going on! It's easy to lose track of time

Raymond Savaria

Well worth the money, very knowledgeable guides throughout the building, all friendly and anxious to inform you. Displays are real and amazing.

Patricia Stewart

The railroad museum in old Sacramento is a fun and informative place for people of all ages. The historical information is interesting and there is a lot to learn.

Mark Chewning

If you love old trains or have never been around them come here and get exposed to why people do love them. Massive beautiful pieces of engineering. You can touch, see, feel and smell the power of the machines from times past.

Rory Henderson

Just went with my wife, father, and 3 year old son. I have never been here even though I have lived 40 min from Old Town and the museum for 25+ years. I have to say this is an amazing place all around. Staff is great up front and conductors and staff throughout the exhibit area were very knowledgeable in the history behind trains. Information on boards all over the place for each exhibit. I am so going back and taking a train ride as soon as time allows. I could spend hours at this museum reading historic information looking at all the trains and getting involved with all the hands on activities they have. 3 levels of train related stuff. How anyone can call this place boring or not worth the $12 a ticket is just to damn picky. Highly recommend you go.

Lily Yee

Great train and railroad museum. Wowsa! Huge trains on display to look at as well as walk thru. Upstairs tot play area and model train exhibit. Docents scattered throughout to give tidbits of fact and tale.

Patsy Gredvig

If you are visiting Sacramento, this museum is well worth a visit. From vintage trains, Sefton's toy collection, to an area for children, there is much to enjoy while you are learning about the history of trains.

Kelly Davis

Amazing! Lots to see and amazing history. Recommended!

Darren Silva

It is worth a half a day of you time. Real cool trains.

B L

Great place to bring the kids, very informative about Califonias history and how intertwined it is. Has a very cool upstairs for kids to play trains with and be able to get hands on with real trains as well.

Trish Divelbiss

A great look at the history of the railroad in the US. Especially enjoyed the elderly gentleman's tour. I'm sorry I don't recall his name.

Ron Baioni

World class railroad exhibits and detailed history. Lots of stuff inside and out. If your really into trains plane on spending all day. Just be aware of your surroundings in the parking garage and in the walk over.

Madeline Maldonado

Great museum to visit with family and kids to learn the history of trains.

David Efros

Full of history and photo ops. If you have any attraction to trains and how they played a roll in the western U.S., this is a place you can spend hours. Good also for children, ages 7 or older.

Daniel S

Always a good afternoon. And my son loves climbing around in some of the trains they have open

Jeremy Johnson

A fun and educational summer spot for your young ones. As well, it's a rather dynamic museum for train enthusiasts of all ages. I go often. Great full scale dioramas. Even for casual patrons, I recommend going at least once.

Jeremy HardAssT

Many locomotives to see, one you can get in and learn about how it works. There are a few train cars you can walk through and see the insides. There's one area with toys for the kids to play with, next to that are interactive electrical circuit building areas that are fun to mess with. Many examples of toy trains and a large electric train track and scenery on display. Throughout the museum are signs with interesting information about the railroads and trains and such. There is also a movie theater where the routinely screen railroad related movies. Fun and informative place to visit.

T Shoe

I have taken classes on the railroad expansion across our nation and the material being fed to the general public is great. Our tour guy was an older gentleman in a motorized scoter but one of the most knowledgeable and hilarious humans I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. He had so much more to share but sadly the tour was only 30mins. The facility itself is clean and engaging. Had an amazing time.

Jose Romo

Great place to learn about California's history and to see up close so e of the massive machinery that allowed for the transportation of early Americans. It has neat exhibits for the kids too.

Edward Pollard

Fantastic experience for young and and old. Great stories related to transcontinental railroad.

Nick Robinson

Fun for kids and adults. Pricing was better than expected.

Jennie Sue

Wonderful elaborate themed railroad museum that gives a true feel of the scale of old trains and the epic importance of the old American railroad. Brought my 3 yr old and she loved it, and is adults were more than impressed on how well designed and thoughtful the museum is

Eric Baugher

So many reviews of the railroad museum. I don't know what more that I can add except that it isbmy favorite place. One thing that I really like is that they teally emphasize the community. The idea is that the whole place is built OF, BY AND FOR, the community.

Elisa Salinas

Loved seeing all the trains and history! This is a fun weekend activity for the whole family. Tip: Get there early and park along the street in nearby Old Town Sacramento. It's an easy walk and saves you $10 on garage parking!

Karyn CREMEENS

Kids love the trains and walking through the cars.

Austin K

Was one of my favorite places when I was a kid and a little disappointed by some of the changes that were made in the 10+ year span I was gone. Ample parking across the way in the parking garage. Really great for kids and adults alike! Still a lot to see and plenty of cool exhibits!

Diana Wake

Definitely worth a visit. Amazing knowledgeable guide shared the history of the railroad. Wonderful displays.

Jon Saurman

Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Volunteers were passionate, keen to help, and a excellent source of knowledge. Locomotives on display were par for the course for a California railroad museum, with a heavy emphasis on the historic marvel that is the Transcontinental Railroad. Had limited time, but would love to come back!

Kristopher Pederson

Very cool museum. The sleeper train car that simulates what it's like to be on a moving train was especially neat. Also the guides were very friendly and had interesting stories.

tata lbloemer

Just GO! Discover how California and the West coast development was and plus get to see AMAZING machines and a travel in time. We only had two hours and we left feeling we should had more time. No time for the cool videos or reading most of the cool info. Definitely going back one day.

Sam Sachs

If you enjoy trains, this is a must visit museum in Sacramento. Tons of information spread out over three floors. Multiple different train cars that are open for you to walk through with museum staff there to answer any questions. Kids will love this museum as well as they have a kids play area on the top floor with toy trains and a small play set. There isn't any parking at the museum, but there are multiple public parking lots around Old Sac.

Sybil Morgan

Impressive collection, very interactive experience as well. Even when it's busy, there is plenty of space inside to get away from the crowd and walk around. Easily handicap accessibile. There is also a kids area on the upper story floor. I don't have kids but it seemed like everyone was having a great time there! If you have the extra money to spend, definitely take a ride on the train that is just down the way from the museum!

Terry Meehan Gardner

Incredible display of American railroad history. Truly let's you step back in time with authentic touch, see and feel experiences all ages will enjoy. Lots of docents to answer questions and share their experiences. Superb quality museum.

Seán Wentzell

The tour was great and our guide was excellent. About a 1 hour tour that covers a mere fraction of what the museum has to offer. Would highly recommend exploring this museum.

Lisa Link

A wonderful adventure for the kids...and train enthusiasts of all ages! We have taken our children here multiple times over the years, for school field trips. Train history combined with California history is fun history! Admission fees are reasonable. Plan to spend a good couple of hours going through it, and give yourself time to explore the Old Sacramento history as well! Catch a ride on the waterfront train to re-live train history.

Wilhelm Rasche

Wonderful and very interesting museum. You learn a lot about American railroad history. Huge locomotives on display. The volunteers will tell you interesting stories about railways and railway history. A perfect place for families with children.

Fae F.

The kids love this place. Lots to explore and learn. You can go a million times and still learn something.

Callie Shackelford

Simply one of the BEST historical museums anywhere. Recommended for all ages. The guides and docents are truly knowledgeable and many have worked on the trains! This museum is a must. Come on a summer weekend to add a steam train ride along the Sacramento River!

Granville Smith II

Came in for the kid, stayed for the experience. Top notch people in here. Go! Seriously. You won't be disappointed

2d Hoople

Awesome museum. Employee's should keep their opinions to themselves when talking about children visiting. Or at least out of other customers ears.

Gary Illingworth

Lots of history. Hugh trains. Good volunteers. Very knowledgeable.

Chris Lawrence

We had a wonderful time. Only had enough time/energy for the first floor. Great information, real trains throughout history, some simulators that made it feel like you were on a track and moving as you walk through the train. Everyone we encountered was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. Look forward to coming back to explore the rest of the museum next time. This museum is very kid friendly, the kids with us had a blast!

keshavamurthy pura suryanarayana

Very nice place from steam engine to diesel. Recollected my childhood memories. Hats off to rail builders.

Robert Gatton

I visited this place several years ago and totally loved it. Great displays, train rides and staff maybe this an enjoyable place to spend the day.

M S

Our 3 year old son is obsessed with trains. He had the best time here. We had a terrible time getting him out of the kids play area on the top level. I would like to see more souvenier stickers available at the gift shop.

Tee Cee

Better than expected. It's an entire roundhouse converted into a museum. We spent almost three hours there. Don't miss the orientation movie, it is high quality cinema.

Stevie Christensen

I have a little one that is super interested in trains. This was a great place to take him. There is a whole section of toy trains and then the ability to see the real large trains was awesome for him. Again if your little ones are interested in trains then this is a great place to spend a morning or day. Take a ride on the train nearby as well. Good times.

Frances L

Excellent. The huge locomotive on display were impressive. The gift shop has a large collection, very educational.

Joanna Roberts

I great place to visit; be you an adult or youngster. The docents bring the exhibits alive with the history of railroads and trains. Mondays, at 11 a.m. is Storytime for the younger folks. You could easily spend a full day here and not see everything the museum has to offer. Old Town Sacramento is within walking distance.

dorothy garten

Wonderful experience. My grandchildren really enjoyed it more than they thought they would! Very clean and informative!

David Conner

Lots of cool trains. Play area for the kids and the various model trains running on the tracks were the family favorites. Train ride was a relaxing break with a decent breeze on the river. Great volunteers

Vladimir Guin

Awesome interesting place, good for kids, will definitely be back with more time

Alan Tam

Very educational museum... Many exhibits to see and there are 3 levels. There's a model train exhibit on the 3rd floor! Plan on spending 1+ days there.

Casie Parrish

The curator(s) of this museum did an excellent job! Great for history buffs and Thomas The Train loving kids alike. We visit several times a year and always enjoy our visit.

Best railroad museum in Northern California. Lots of kid friendly exhibits and an excursion railroad to boot!

My 2 year old sons favorite place! He loves Thomas the tank engine and all trains. We recently decided to become members. It was only about $40 for a whole year and we came come anytime as much as we want. We also get discounts and first priority for events. It’s a huge historic place. Fun for all ages. In a great location with lots to explore in old town sac. Like stepping back in time. Very cute town. Love this place!

Melody Leclair

What an amazing experience to see such beautiful Engines, and Lear about the history of the Railroad industry. Family friendly. Highly recommend

Kain Mosher

If you love trains or are at all interested in them you will love this museum. From a detailed history of the railroad being put in that includes stories from those who witnessed first hand, to being able to see railroad cars and engines from several era’s. I loved that the trains you could walk through had a docent who would answer questions and tell you a little more about them. The cost is $12.00 per person and plan a couple hours at least. Great place for adults as well as children.

Sam Chan

Son loves this place. If you like railroads and models you can spend hours at this place.

Daniel G

The museum offered an interesting look into the history of railroads in California. There are lots of exhibits and I enjoyed my time there. It you any souvenirs there's a little gift shop at the front of the museum.

MITCH N

You have to love trains or us history to get anything out of this. Its fairly small and not very easy to navigate. Don't expect to spend more than an hour

Tom Conlee

The best Railroad museum my family has ever visited.

Dean Borys

I love trains, this place is COOL. Dioramas in the museum transport you to being at the place in time. The collection of locomotives and rolling stock is great, including one of those sixteen driving wheel behemoths. My favorites was a sleeper car with simulated motion rolling down the track, complete with train whistles and RR crossing Bells (doing ding ding). For a brief moment, I was in 1942 on the train to Chicago at night. AWESOME

Allan Greenberg

If you like living history or like trains then don't miss this opportunity to visit. It is impressive how the exhibition has been arranged.

Melissa Ellis

It is bigger than it looks snow awesome place to see. So much history of the railroad. The view of the trains were amazing. You are able to go instead the trains and see how people traveled. It has left a lasting impression on me and my family.

O'Meara Family

Really well done. Family had fun walking through the different trains.

Adrian

I enjoyed it very much! It is impressing to stand close to those superb machines. And it is amusing to read their stories. Very interesting and worth the visit. I lked the models a lot, too, along the upper walkways.

Shelly Hill

This place is fantastic!! Set up for kids. Train rides too. Just check beforehand on train schedules. In our family, the train museum is a rite of passage. We buy season tickets and kids are free.

Alex P

I'm a big fan of transportation museums and have been to numerous ones across the nation and around the world. This is probably one of the best ones that I have ever been to. They have an incredible collection of locomotives and rail history here. This is an absolute must see if you are visiting Sacramento, even if you aren't usually into this type of thing.

Steven Bisbee

A truly unique place to visit and learn about railroad history in California. The restored locomotives and rail cars are immaculate and you can get onboard some of them. The collection of toy trains and antique toys are worth the trip alone.Located in old town Sacramento, there are plenty of shops and restaurants to visit.

Lisa Pollock

Our son is a huge train enthusiast so we had to become members at the train museum. We visit most weekends and ride the excursion trains during the summer. They are always changing/improving the exhibits so it's always interesting. We love it.

Diane D

Looking for something touristy to do in Sacramento and the locals recommended here. We spent two hours and were satisfied with the experience, however one could easily spend 3 hours. If you’re a real train and museum enthusiast, come at 9 am and spend the day. Definitely take in the tour. The movie was not great, which surprised me; 30 minutes long with minimal info. The bottom floor is the best where the actual cars are located. Fun and interesting!

Maria Eswine

We really loved how interactive and informative the exhibits were!

Carol Blasquez

Had a great visit. My husband had never been.

Marilyn Higby

Nice place if you love trains.

Millie Johnson

There was so much more than I expected. The tour was fun and informative. The movie was good, but the train cars were fabulous! There was more with every turn and you could either board them or look in the windows. I had never seen a post office car. Well worth a visit!

Casey Allen

This is an amazing spot to look at the history of the railroad systems in the area and of the states. Many things for ages 2-100 to do. I have been visiting with my family for 3 years. Definite recommendation for those interested in history.

Flo Ba

Extremely interesting museum and incredible friendly and helpful volutarily working staff. We had a great visit! Thanks a lot!

Bob M

Very interesting large train museum with gift shop. Plenty of great docents.

Robert Hill

Great place to take the kids. You will enjoy it, too. Lots of real trains, from many eras, plus old models and toys.

Julie Conetah

Always nice to take the kids so they can see how the trains work and the history i always enjoy it there.

Kimberly Maguire

Awesome museum for kids of all ages, a great way to kill a few hours on a rainy day, and great for adults too. Really cool to be able to walk into actual train cars and the entire museum is beautifully done. Middle of the day expect to run into a school group, though they seem to schedule them well that it doesnt interfere with a smaller groups on their own.

Richard Smith

Interesting display of trains. You can see everything in a couple of hours. If you are a train alfisado toy can easily spend a food share of the day here

Ady u

Good place for kids. You can go back and see how it all started, historic district in general is Ok. Quick mention : there’s a train that actually simulates a real train. So when you get on it you get the real feel that takes you back in time. Such exhibits are worth your time.

Robert Edstedt

A real nice museum with a great selection of old locomotives and train cars.

Olga T. Howard

One of the host on an engine was a original driver of the past on the Pacific railroad. He alone was so informative. Grand total best railroad museum I have experienced in my life time of 78 years. Thank you for the opportunity.

jimmy sternbergh

This place is awesome I can't wait to take my grandson there I went there with my wife and had a blast

Lillian Ivy

You can be up.close and personal with real trains, stylish steam engines, electric, and old world luxury. Great opportunity for pictures. Use public parking lot, or lots of quarters for parking. Has gift shop. Wheelchair accessible.

Amy Altstatt

Simply one of the coolest museums in Sac. My daughter loves this place and I can’t imagine sacramento without it. Three floors of museum. First floor is all real train engines and train cars set up just like they were in that era. You can walk through most of them and climb up in the seats. It’s quite an experience. Second floor is sciencey stuff about trains past, present, and future with a simulation if you choose. The third floor is toy train collector’s dream with hundreds of toy trains on display including a huge toy train city set up behind glass that you can watch go around. There are train tables for the kids to play on as well. Over Christmas, they put on a Polar Express performance. Tickets are pricey but SO WORTH IT and sell out within hours of going on sale every year. You ride on a train where they read the story of polar express to you, perform just like the movie, handing out hot chocolate and cookies to every guest. You ride to the “North Pole” set up down the tracks and Santa boards giving every child a tiny silver bell. It’s absolute magic.

david divelbiss

Great train museum. Great your. Fun exhibits

Cindy Brumfield

History and fun to be had here great for family or friends .

Pam Samonte

Visited this museum with husband and 2 yr old grandson. I could only say good things about this museum although words are not enough to describe the magnificence of each beautifully restored train in the exhibits. You don't have to be a train lover to enjoy and appreciate this place. You can bring the whole family and have a memorable experience.

Charles Wilkinson

Best I've seen. Great Docents. They make the place. Good History. Best Trains. Even a place for the Kids.

Stephanie Smith

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the railroad museum. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. The kids that I am a nanny for absolutely love the museum, it is a place for them to explore and be them selves. They are very inquisitive children and often ask the staff many many questions. If a staff member does not know the answer to one of their questions, they often go and find someone who can answer it for them. Their favorite parts are the play room with the children toys, Picking out a new toy train in the gift shop, and taking a train ride (although it is a bit short, it is the perfect length for young children.) I enjoy the museum myself, each time we go I always learn something new and exciting. Definitely one of the best museums here in Sacramento.

Delia Kenkel

I thought it would be more geared towards children but I was wrong. It has fun and interesting things for everyone. I enjoyed the couple of hours we spent and would have stayed longer but they were closing.

Scott Love

Absolutely love this place. Displays are great and the information is great. Love that they makes some of the trains an interactive experience. They also have taking rides available some days, where they use different vintage trains to take your on a short trip.

David Hurley

The California State Railroad Museum is an excellent place for families or individuals! The museum tells the story of the movement West with the railroads and how California in particular was influenced. They have many engines and passenger cars used at different times. They have an entire floor dedicated to toy trains, especially Lionel. The caretakers are knowledgeable and very friendly. If you are in Sacramento, the California State Railroad Museum is a must!

Daniel Sciabica

Excellent Museum for understanding to history of railroading in the United States with actual historic locomotives, railcars and multiple displays.

Steve Brownell

My 4yo son spends hours here. Interesting local/ state history. Kids play area upstairs. Staff are knowledge and willing to educate. Nice place to stroll the board walk shops near by. RV and large vehicle parking available behind museum. Park to right under the overpass for hourly rate by credit card if not staying all day.

Tom Hansen

This is an amazing Museum. Definitely worth the price if admission. Take the train ride a go first class. You won't regret it.

Francis Samonte

My grandson spend good 1 - 2 hours here. Then he loves the store for the toys.

Dennis Long

Well planned and executed. Better than most tourists destinations in California

Michael Berardini

One of the best railroad museums I've been too! Wonderful displays and knowledge staff, recommend to everyone

josh shank

Cool place to go spend a day. Real trains and and history to see. Fair price and located right next to a parking grage and tons of shops.

Awesome place to go check out some old trains and learn some railroad history. Family friendly for young and old alike.

Nice collection in a pleasant setting along the river. Be careful in the adjacent car park structure as there were a few sketchy guys lurking about who were clearing casing cars.

So much history. Wish I could take all my great grand kids and parents. Great area to tour after seeing the Railroad museum.

This place is cool and probably a lot of fun to bring kids to as parents. The interactive carts are the best!! It feels like a real train!

Wonderful place for those interested in rail transport. Not only authentic real steam engines (some massive), freight and passenger rail cars, but fascinating history of transcontinental and other aspects of the development of railways are brought to life by very knowledgeable volunteers. In addition there is a superb collection of models, of a wide range of scales, from 1/3rd to 1:220 (Z scale). In particular, there is a uniquely comprehensive collection of Lionel models including working layouts. Social history is not neglected, with the contributions and problens of Chinese workers described and the Pullman strike of 1894 laid out in text and photos. In addition there is plenty for children (Thomas the Tank Engine) and the gift shop is very good.

If you love trains or are at all interested in them you will love this museum. From a detailed history of the railroad being put in that includes stories from those who witnessed first hand, to being able to see railroad cars and engines from several era’s.I loved that the trains you could walk through had a docent who would answer questions and tell you a little more about them. The cost is $12.00 per person and plan a couple hours at least. Great place for adults as well as children.
