REVIEWS OF Autry Museum of the American West IN California

Ian Beavis

A much improved and more complete story of the West than had been here previously. Thorough enjoyed it. Heading to their Mt Washington Annex next

Charles Riendeau

The Autry is directly across from the entrance to the LA Zoo. It has the elegance of the most formal museums with an array of interactive displays that make it fun. We had an excellent native guide who took us through a couple of hundred years of natural wisdom and history in just over an hour. The food service didn't impress me. But, you can bring your own lunch.

Gary Standke

Great way to explore how Europeans got to and took over the west. Great exhibit on the native tribes and their displacement. Coverage of the different ethnic groups which arrived. Tons of artifacts from stone tools and baskets, knives, guns wagons, stagecoach, fire truck. Examples of the ways they all lived. Took the guided tour which was a great way to be reintroduced to all the different areas of the museum. Outer garden area is wonderful. Also an entire area of the rise of the westerns from radio, silent film, to movies an TV. Nice looking cafe for eating, but nothing gluten free.

Wayne Sharp

Enjoyed our visit here. Loved seeing exhibits on the history of Hollywood Western movies. They also have a good collection of Remington and Colt firearms. Wish they had a more extensive collection of Native American artifacts, but they still have a lot of old West stuff worth seeing.

Erica Washington

Every year I used to take my fifth grade classes from the school where I taught. They always enjoyed visiting this museum as it fit so well into our Social Studies curriculum. The docents were amazing. On another trip, I even took my grandson to it. He loved the jail and the chance to ride a horse statue in a movie. I retired six years ago, but would recommend teachers experiencing this with their students.

Jake Quan

Interesting Museum. Bigger and more fascinating than expected.

MYRA DKS

So interesting, so much history . If you go with an open mind you'll come back with a great experience!! With toddlers??? um I'm not advice to go. But there is a small area to play, is a movie set with a green screen . Great experience!!

James Geer

We attended for free on the first Saturday of the month since we are Bank of America patrons. What I liked: The several sculptures were good, and the ones of the Pony Express and Gene Autry were great, really capturing the legends. I found several of the displays interesting and informative, e.g., the ones of the chuck wagon and comparative costs then compared to now. The artwork exhibit On Fire: Transcendent Landscapes by Michael Scott had powerful images. What I disliked: 1) Parts of the special exhibit Coyote Leaves the Res: The Art of Harry Fonseca were downright offensive. What is his preoccupation with male genitalia? 2) Too many of the posters denigrate the contributions of anyone with European or Christian ancestry. Where is the tolerance?

Peter M

I had the fortunate luck to have a retired Docent lead us. Small groups are better if you are inquisitive.

M Montes

Best south west museum In Los Angeles if not all of Southern California. My kids had fun and I really enjoyed the museum as well. Thank you Autry museum and staff.

Sai Ahmed

The place was really nice and I was amazed with everything I saw. It's a nice place to bring the family and enjoy the old West. I loved the native American Indian woman who made tiny baskets from twigs. It was really an amazing experience.

Gary Graham

Very beautiful Museum can't wait to go back and do some more exploration great place to take kids

David Vasquez

There is so much to do here. When we went, there was an art gallery of the west. There is a collection of memorabilia from westerns, as well as a reconstructed bar from the old west. Will definitely go back there.

William Seegers

I think the name belies the true nature of this wonderful museum. Once you get in the doors though it's made clear that this museum was founded by Gene Autry and dedicated to his love of the west. And the definition of "The West" is diverse, historic, and thorough, as it should be. There's a permanent installation of old west historic items along with constantly updating contemporary exhibits about life in the west today from all walks of life. It's a cliche but I'd argue there's something for everyone here.

Yesi Orozco

love this place on May 17 for a field trip i'm from El Dorado and i wish i can go there again

Antonio Ll.

Yesenia Duran

We were on a school trip and everything was organized.

Sal Campos

Great museum for your dad or gun enthusiasts

Nicole Elin Antoine

Got a flat tire in the parking lot when we got there. Love the layout of the museum with an open atrium in the center. There is a costume section with Michael Jacksons metal shoes and lots of old Hollywood costuming. I went for the featured artist who has great paintings of fire in landscape.

Tom Henderson

Wow, what a pleasant surprise this visit was! Very interesting yet not exhausting exhibitions that are made with love and care. Great moment at the Stagecoach, bar exhibit and Billy the Kids actual rifle. The restaurant serves simple but good food. A must visit!

E J

Went to movie nights in the park. Lots of friendly people, some with their dogs as pet friendly and several food trucks. Tillamook was giving out three free ice cream samples to all. Yummy! Beautiful view under the open sky. Great crowd.

Ashley Chai

Very clean & organized. Perfect to take your 4th or 5th grader.

Dulcie Flaharty

Autry routinely has interesting and thought provoking special exhibits. The traditional Gene Autry memorabilia, enhanced by lots more cowboy stuff is fun for kids and adults alike. Easy parking and a friendly staff makes it a great destination for a short or longer visit.

Elliot Ortega

The armory is really cool, my other favorites were the saloon and cowboy exhibit

Rosamaria Varela

It was good but we didn't have time to see the movie

Marla Wolkowitz

We had a great time exploring the various permanent exhibits and temporary. We also attached ourselves to a docent who was engaging. Terrific day at the Autry.

Kelly Novak

It's a beautiful museum, but certainly not one of my favorites in the L.A. area. Mostly clean women's restrooms. People leaned over some of the exhibits too far to take pictures and set off the alarms a few times. Our toddlers did not enjoy this museum so much until we went out to the garden area. There were a few areas closed off due to renovations/upcoming exhibitions when we visited (4/10/18). free admission on the second Tuesday of each month free parking in their lot or the L.A. zoo across the street has overflow parking, but I'm not sure how much their fees are

Steve A

The singing cowboy experience. A good look at the days of early Hollywood cowboys. Great exhibits with some interesting stories and facts. The museum has detailed exhibits of 19th & early 20th century history of western frontier expansion of the US. This museum also has many genuine artifacts of the same time period, including paraphernalia used by the indigenous population, documents, photos, and fantastic firearms exhibits. A nice place to spend a few hours or you can spend time at the LA zoo, which is directly across the road.

Joan Williams

I was totally amazed by this museum. Such a wonderful and varied collection which is beautifully displayed!! A must see if in the area!

Jordan Stokes

Located right across from the LA Zoo, the Autry houses a stupendous collection of Western artifacts providing a glimpse into the making of our culture.

Edward Klein

Went there for an outdoor movie, great night. The lawn is perfect for this type of event and the food trucks were yummy. Comet BBQ was there and that was the only disappointment.

Rexford Crafts

Great place to see art and exhibitions. Cool native plant healing garden and many great displays of objects from the west in olden' times!

Dave Carpio

Great Museum for a fun family activity

Tony Hiller

Great for old western movie fans with nice exhibits, and a native American art exhibit that is very interesting. Free parking and reasonable entrance fee.

Kenway Heyden

This place is GREAT as usual. Love odd nights out at the Autry :-) Music Rides/Massive Jumpers Awesome selection of food trucks Art Good energy What more can you ask for?

roy skinner

There are very cool things to see there. Naming them would take away from it. All the kids I saw were having fun, talking excitedly about an exhibit, etc.

misty forest

One of Mom's favorite places to visit on our way to Griffith Observatory

Rosie Ramirez

Went over and checked this place out after visiting the zoo. It only took an hour to hour and half to get thru. The top floor is mostly changing art galleries. The lower floor is history of the American West. It covers from the first settlers to movies portraying the west. They have several artifacts from chuck wagons, saloons, firearms, and everyday living. It also went into famous cowboys and Hollywood movies. If you have any interest in these things this is worth the stop. If you are a veteran or active duty you get in for free.

Mason G

A beautiful museum that focuses a lot on the history of the wild west in both TV and in real life. There are also special exhibits from time to time which are always worth checking out! A quintessential piece of Californian history and a good place to take kids because of all the interesting pieces offered.

Shaan Nisar

Great museum with charming staff and cultural exhibits

Hector Rios

Great place to come with the whole family. Beautiful exhibits and arrangements and I was captivated by the Colt exhibit which happens to be my favorite.

sonny ramos

Take your time enjoying this gem.

E. C.

I went (twice) specifically for the Raza exhibit and it was amazing! I feel so lucky to have been able to see such a well put together exhibit that was extremely on point with its information. The rest of the museum was also great and I love the variety of topics you can learn about. I would definitely come back for other special events/exhibits & recommend to museum lovers!!

Marcus Drew

Super fun to learn about things in the past from our beloved home America!!

richard mendoza

This is a very nice and relaxing place to visit. I don't recommend taking small children as they will bored within 5mins.

Cynthia Arredondo

Such a fun and interesting place. Went for my daughter's field trip. Definitely coming back to explore the whole museum.

Douglas Tavenner

Great memories, Great firearms exhibit.

SHARON ROOT

My granddaughter and I spent the afternoon there and had a great time but I would really like to commend the groundskeepers who were trimming the hedges in front of the museum. Our car had a problem and I asked them to help and they fixed it in no time. They were kind and courteous and I would like people to know how important it was to us that they fixed it. Thank you so much.

John Reddick

Really cool place to spend a few hours. They have pistols on display owned by Wyatt Earp, JFK, Nixon, etc. Beautiful pieces of artwork. Tributes to the old westerns. Movie props.

Kim Kellerman

I love the Autry Museum. I've been taking my granddaughter here for years. They have a great western movie exhibit which includes a green screen movie maker where you can pretend to be riding a horse, along with hats and other props to have fun. There's a fun kids area where kids can pretend they are living in the old days on a farm. There's costumes and all types of things to imagine with. They have a changing exhibit featuring different artists. As well as an outside area that houses many native plants. They have a cafe outside. And a large grass area where they hold special events. Parking is free. Staff have always been very friendly and so full of knowledge. A great place to come and escape the heat and take in a bit of Hollywood, California, art and history!

Beto Raigosa

Great place. Highly recommended if your kids or the kid in you would like to get to know our Western heritage.

bono212 .

We had a very good time here with our 9 month old daughter. I wasn't expecting there to be as much for her to do as there was, but the dress-up/movie section was the highlight for us, since being parents is exciting and new, still. The collections here are really incredible, especially the weaponry section. That's what makes museums so wonderful, seeing objects you've heard and read about firsthand. We went on a Bank of America customer appreciation day, so my husband was free. Check their calendar before visiting, there are various free dates each month.

Jazmen Thomas

Very well maintained museum. Attractive for both kids and adults. Ticket prices don't exceed $14 which is very reasonable given the high number of works to see. I visited for only 3 hours on a Saturday afternoon and want to come back asap to finish the museum.

Dinora Quispe

There's always an event happening, great place for children and adults.

Alishia Rhoda

This has to be one of my favorite museums and I love Museums. This is a perfect combination of Hollywood wild west and actual Wild West history. Everything from Bonanza to Wild Bill Hickock's gun. Highly recommend must see history

Chris Banning

This Museum specializes in Western themed artwork including paintings, Sculptures and Statues, drawings, and more. Fun place to go to see unique things and artwork. Lots of parking is available. Easily spotted from the Freeway and close to Griffith Park. Nearby is Travel Town where you can see large Locomotives on display and other train related things. I've been going there since 1959. Parking is available here also.

Alexandra D Stubbemann

Nice selection of jewelry and excellent exhibitions.

Eva Yu Cheung

Great museum. Great blend of different topics concerning the Californians and mid west - i learned a lot an enjoyed the interaction. Informative for adults and fun interactive sites for young kids throughout. Great blend of different art forms. Plaques are well situated and contain the right amount of detail.

Evonn Morris

Totally awesome, we had our tribal meeting there I am very impressed at all the native artifacts.

RAY PEREZ

Good music. Museum is open. Cocktails selection limited. Nice evening.

Arpine Ginosyan

Very impressive museum, two hours is not even enough. The ticket is $14 per person, $10 for students. Nice atmosphere, very interactive and engaging. The park around has free wifi and you'll never regret visiting it.

David Lee

The tour was amazing and learned cool things. Our guide was wonderful and explained everything in detail. This was a great experience and I would recommend it to everyone!

Scott Pactor

Solid four star museum, though ultimately it is hard to ignore the fact of a museum of the american west founded by a television cowboy. Still, they mean well and the rotating exhibits often focus on native communities.

jenna didier

World class museum with highly engaging rotating exhibitions as well as permanent collections encompassing Western Heritage including the First People's significant and important cultural heritage presented in collaboration with their living ancestors. A must for visitors and locals seeking to understand Los Angeles and the phenomenon of western expansion.

Gilbert Artiaga

Besure to take friends and family. It's an audio and video education for the under Social Security folk's.

Kayla Gower

This museum was filled to the brim with rich history and cun! We had an hour to go on the tour and our guide was amazing! She packed as much information as she could with the time we had. I wish I had time to go through and really enjoy each and every part I could have easily spent half a day looking at and taking everything in. They have an outdoor portion which is a great to take a break and enjoy nature and also learn a little about the types of plants.

Sequoya Balboa

We had a great time. We saw dances from Terry and Michael. The playhouse was fun. Ive never been there before and as my first time, it was awesome. My daughter loved it too.

Chuck Mound

This is a great museum with so much yo offer and explore. They did a great job with all of the various exhibits. Provides a wide range of History. Takes a few hours to get through the museum. Definitely does not take up the entire day , you can plan on half a day here. Would love to revisit this place again. If you like museums, it is a must visit.

Elaine Ewing

Salsa dancing under the stars on a beautiful California evening.

Alejandro Castro

This is my first time here so it was completely new to me. I had been meaning to come here for a couple of years now and well i finally did it. Well moving on to what you really came here for. The museum is mainly about natives and the effect that immigrants had on them and their territories. The museum is quite small but that doesn't mean it isn't worth a trip or a few. Everything is well designed. It has a minimalist style in which one can relax while also admiring the many pieces of history wether they be painting or sculptures. One can simply come and get lost in the many section it has. To be fair one days isn't enough to take it all in, so that means that one must come really early and slightly rush through the pieces but once again two days is the best way to experience it. I find this as a great place to relax and learn about the past and the implications it had on other athnic groups.

Thomas Arellanes

Odd Market at the Autry was cool. The museum had some galleries open during the market and they were amazing. Food trucks were great also. Will definitely be back every 3rd Friday til October.

M O

I didn't think I'd care for it, but was very pleasantly surprised by the venue and collections; from stunning artwork to movie memorabilia. Very well done and a pleasure to tour.

DeEtte Tikotzinski

Great place to appreciate! Get a sense of history and then get outside to enjoy the day!

Laurel Woodley

Great place to take out-of-town visitors. Nice restaurant to get a bite to eat and a spacious Gift Shop to pickup some western items.

Chris Haynes

A wonderful place. If you love Colt firearms you will never want to leave.

J S

This museum is really well done. Wonderful courtyard to hang out in and eat and drink. The museum has lots of things to see and do. Parking can sometimes be an issue.

Alice M

SUCH a fun field trip! My kids loved loved loved it! I even had a great time. The artifacts, the history, and the wonderful David who showed my class around really made the experience one we will never forget! On top of everything, all of my kids have a hearing loss. David also uses hearing technology. Whaaaaat a great role model opportunity for my students. Thank you!

Ana DelMar

Rainbow Eevee

Good museum and great experience for everyone of all age

Mauiboy444

La Raza display was great and the other artworks incredible.. Plus got to watcjh old cowboy movies really cool

Andy Chase

Outstanding museum for western history, culture and art. There is emphasis on participation of various ethnic groups and the role they had in the expanding west. While this is a traditional museum, there are numerous activities for kids. I suggest that you visit their website for details. Fun fact: Gene Autry, founder of the museum also wrote the song "Here comes Santa Claus"

RAY COX

Best gun collection in the world!! Rich with history, so much to do!!! Come see for yourself!!

Jane Doe

Was my first visit ever to see the American Masters which comes around once a year. I had no idea. Paintings looked like photographs. Photographs! Very nice mix of classic portraiture, landscapes, still life, mixed media, metals, ceramics, glass and textiles. Range of price points. Recommended!

Molly Fisher

The Autry Museum was always one of our favorite museums to visit when we lived in LA in the late 1990s. It often featured interesting traveling exhibits plus fun items of the permanent collection of Gene Autry's memorabilia from movies, music and baseball. So when we were in LA in Jan. 2019 we stopped by. The day we visited was Tuesday, which was free admission. The new exhibit wasn't opening for a few days but we got to see our old favorites as well as a small special exhibit of western artists, primarily of landscapes. Museum shop has some unusual items too.

Eva Rosenberg

We were there for their Marketplace Day, which included a series of short plays. We've been here before and we always enjoy it immensely. Their Native Voices series gives a window into the lives and perspectives of many tribes. It's fascinating to see the people from so any different tribes, who used to be at war with each other, historically, now working together to produce art.

Anne Swatfigure

Beautiful museum of Western art. This visit was for a seminar on cruising Alaska. Nice auditorium and.large free parking lot on NW side of Griffith Park, just off 5 Frwy.

Gerry Hester

This was absolutely the best museum I've been to --I thought it was going to be all about Gene Autry but I was so surprised that it was all about the West and of course the western cowboy heroes and their films. The exhibits were so authentic and all the history was explained so well. I planned on being there for an hour and wound up spending over four hours. It was a perfect afternoon! BTW Veterans get in free

Ginger Sony

Great place, too many things to see, takes more than one visit!

Barry Waite

The changing galleries upstairs are interesting, but the displays downstairs are awesome! A diverse view of western history. Not too pricey either!

Andres Madrigal

Welcome to the west! This place is very cool.

Fort Daisy

I love the old west & this is as close as this city slicker can get. The Autry Museum brings back the old days, in a modern venue.

Heather Jimenez

I went here with my family on New Year's since it was free. Honestly, I would have paid to get in! It was such a fun day for us. Lots of cool stuff to see and things to learn regarding the history of the West. My husband especially enjoyed checking this place out.

Chris Romero

First time there and i loved it! So much history and interesting exibits, could not read everything in one day. Will be returning. The kids area was awesome, they got to play and have a ton of fun.

Peter Fabian

I am not a cowboys fan but on New Year's day there was free entrance and I had a great time. This place is kids and wheelchair friendly. You can buy food here and some gifts. If you have limited time in LA and you are not a fan of old West culture try to find different activity.

Marlem Palomo

Best museum to learn the truth about cowboys and native Americans. Lots and lots of information on the reality of those days. You will need a whole day to understand what you're reading and looking at. I was blown away by our history. Don't miss it.

P B

Typical museum filled with friendly people and yes ART. Didn't have time to throughly check this whole place out, I was here on business. Overall nice large building with many places to see. Very clean and spacious

Jason

Really amazing museum. Great to see with friends or family. The tours are great and its right across from the LA Zoo so you could do both. Tons of rich history and artifacts here

karl escobar

This is a good place to visit to knowledge some western history and get something to eat, they also have some outdoor activities with food trucks I got some Greek food and it was delicious check this place out and bring your family.

Carson Stone

Several exhibits were closed for renovations, but the few that were had very interesting pieces of Americana

ashwindra kumar

Great museum for a tour and art

Aaliyah Davis`

Its a perfect place to go with kids or with family anyone really. You learn a lot about the western. Stuff that you did not even know about. Its an amazing plave

Alexander Freedman

The tour guides were wonderful and had a very caring attitude. Our tour guide was exceptional. She went above and beyond her duties by telling us all information about the exhibits as much as she could! She explained in great detail about every single exhibit. I highly recommend you visit this museum! It is very educational and a great way to learn about Westward Expansion!

Dino D

#Eat/See/Hear at the movies #Casablanca Here’s Looking At You Kid

Kevin Mullett

Love this museum! They have some of the greatest displays and they really teach you what life was like in the west. Really one of the best museums out there. We have been members for years and go to all of their events

Alexis Andrews

It is a multi-faceted all aged attraction dedicated to all things around the theme of the west. It has a lot of cool interactive features which will entertain the young (and their parents) and the kids won't even mind the fact that they are being tricked into learning things.

r wesley edwards

Much better than I expected. Two levels. Exhibitions.

Roderic Kavanagh

Take the time and spend a day... there's too much to see on a mere visit. Get your info at the main desk, but be careful some of the guys have their own agenda and may make you linger too long at certain areas. Plenty of extraordinary exhibits. Really good Cafe on site!

Jess Kovach

Love it! So interesting and great for family outings! Plus the food at the cafe is great!

Jose Beltran

The exibit on Chicano history was somber, beatiful, and timely.

scotti jo seuthe

Beautiful place with lovely exhibits. It took us about 2 1/2 hours to see everything, not counting the garden. There's food available with courtyard seating, as well as picnic space outside the museum proper.

Matteo Bateman

This is the bomb of a museum. Everyone in my mind, has business going to this wonderful place. I didn't expect to to be this delighted but let me tell you. I had a ball! I recommend this museum for everyone

Marcelo Orellana

Great fun in the sun with our little ones

Alvin Leram

The event had a variety of food trucks, vendors and great music. The access to the 2nd floor of the museum was a nice touch, albeit I was excited for the whole museum to be opened until 9pm. The place was dog and kid friend with a big open space; be sure to bring a jack and blanket!

Jonathon Gimenez

Nice museum, many rotating exhibits that give a nice view into the old west. Can highly recommend!

Sidney Marquez

For the whole family. Early California History. Different Indian tribes that lived here in the Griffith Park area. As well as the Mexican heratige in early times. The challenges to see if the young men could run from Griffith Park to Santa Monica Beach. Gene Autry's life history. Sizzling Summer nites. Fun for the whole family.

Steve Stancer

The current displays interesting and funny.

B H Mack

Had excellent docent tour. Been there many times before. First time with a docent. Learned so much more with docent.

Antonio Rosa

Awesome old west history collection.

lovecat

Excellent displays, architecture, and layout. There is a history of American Indian culture, Chinese American history, and Spanish American history, as well as historical cowboy and old western US artifacts that are eye opening. I consider this to be the best museum in the L.A. area to visit. Well worth the entry fee of less than $8. I have been there several times, taking visiting family and friends there every chance I get. I learn something new every time I go. There is a small cafe with outside seating and a gift store. The museum is located across the road from the L.A. zoo, and nearby in Griffith park is a railroad museum that is fascinating.

Conrad Reslock

I volunteer at the Autry as a docent. I think it's great. I always wanted to be a cowboy when i grew up and, now, I don't have to grow up.

Mark Emerick

Great museum. Incredible firearms exhibit. Lots of history.

Elk Tilles

This fascinating museum is located in the midst of the sprawling grounds of Griffith Park. The outdoor garden with its explanation of Western plant life was a wonderful start for us. From there we went through as many exhibits as we could. The exhibits are hands on and appealing to young and old alike. There is much conversation and shared findings between museum visitors. Probably the best hands on activities I have experienced at a museum.

Daniel Burke

One of our great local museums. Reasonable admission prices. Currently they have two new exhibitions of Native contemporary art. The Art of David Bradley from the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The second is Harry Fonseca paintings and drawings. His Coyote series shows how one's idenity can intersect and refract into something intriguing. A great way to spend your day.

Winston Merl

Fun museum to explore, lots of nostalgia here.

Vibe Tron

Best Gall dang cattle ranching Country Museum I've ever done been to.

What a great museum! Quite a selection of different displays. Nice selection of costumes from movies. Interesting display on history of La Raza in photographs. Permanent and rotating exhibits in different wings. Two floors of displays, a theater, an education center, cafe, museum store. Veterans get free admission. Discounts for seniors. Membership gets discounts at store and cafe, and notification for special events.

SSGT Graziano

Great staff. Displays are impressive. Much bigger than the outside looks.

Billy Boone

Absolutely loved it. It's a great experience for the whole family.
