REVIEWS OF Arizona State Museum IN Arizona

Hugh Fletcher

A wonderful collection of all the native Americans in Arizona. Very educational for adults. Did not make time for a docent. Will do that next time. Combined with the UA art museum for a great afternoon.

Kyle McLemore

Many cool exhibits here that teach about the native cultures in and around Arizona.

Stephen Roberts

The website is rarely updated and has false promises of certain exhibits. The museum itself is decent I suppose but not very grand or large with some exhibits being written in a misleading manor. The museum needs to be updated severely and it needs funding. Also the staff weren't paying any attention to anything at all.

Ousawa Auditore

I loved the whole experience. I learned a lot. Quiet, respectful, very informative and comfortable. The staff were very professional and polite. They were enthusiastic about the museum.

This is a great museum right on the edge of the UA campus. One section tells you at great length about the growth and demise of the Hohokam and the other part tells of the tribes still active in the Southwest. How they were originally, how outside influences affected them and how they are now. Fascinating!!!!

My son and I went several weeks back, and we both loved it. The facilities on the university campus are always immaculately kept, and full of history. My son loved the Native American exhibits, especially the pottery. Seriously, you're missing out if you don't take advantage of the university's facilities and explore what's around.

This museum on the University of Arizona campus currently has an exhibit tracing the history of weaving textiles and baskets from roughly 4000BC to the present. It is very interesting as it traces the evolution of textiles and basketry from utilitarian to an art form. The focus is upon the Native American tribes in Arizona. The exhibit is suitable for children and adults. It's easy to spend 2-3 hours looking at the exhibits and reading the interpretive information. The museum also has an interesting display of Native American pottery. While you are on campus you should also visit the USS Arizona Memorial located in the quad behind Old Main. It is a sober reminder of the tragedy of December 8, 1941.

Summary based on one visit: --didn't have high expectations, but found the exhibits quite interesting --reasonable entry fee --parking in fee lot nearby --some very nice items in the store, especially better quality Hopi silver. Prices seemed lower and variety of higher quality pieces greater than some other places. If you're making a significant purchase, inquire whether it makes financial sense to join the museum for the discounts.

ASM had nice exhibits featuring the history of Arizona tribes. Some of the written exposition feels as though it has gone though the PC grinder before extrusion, but there's a decent attention to detail and there are a couple of nice, interactive exhibits for kids.

Feels a bit old, but the exhibitions are really focused and they feature some unique regional objects that are not easily seen in other museums.

Excellent presentation of Arizona archeological, anthropological and historical story. The weaving is amazing! The story is told through artifacts, dioramas and artifacts that bring it to life. I should have been back sooner. A 5 minute walk from the inexpensive parking garage and modest $8 entrance fee. A better explanation of how to go through the exhibits would have helped.

Susan Armstrong

Top notch. Couldn't stand to read about the atrocities our culture has inflicted on the native people but the cultural displays are really well done.

The campus at UofA is nice to walk around, but considering it is hot as hell that only lasts so long. The museum is a nice respite from the blazing temps. The museum was also a participant in the Blue Star Museum initiative to allow military members access to select museums. Active duty military members need culture and this program provides an avenue for the defenders of our nation. The museum is centered around a maze of hallways depicting all the tribes of native cultures from Arizona extending south. The meticulous detail provided to explain the cultures was above reproach. There were multiple different media presentations about the different tribes. If you like pottery this is the place for you. They have an extensive collection of priceless pottery on display. The many different varieties and handiworks are on display.
