REVIEWS OF Birmingham Museum of Art IN Alabama

J.R. Dandy

A wonderful venue full of culture and history. When we visited, it was donation-based, so I felt compelled to give what I could because the museum encompasses a tremendous wealth of information & artifacts within its space. I will return in the future and would encourage anyone who appreciates art, history, and knowledge to see for yourself.

Tommy Townsend

One of the best free attractions in the 205. Wide array of art styles and periods are featured. Takes maybe 3 hr to glance at everything

Jody Thrash

Attended the Holi festival for the 2nd year in a row and it was fantastic!

Bryan Stack

Art on the Rocks was great!! The bar set up could have been a bit better to allow for the flow of the crowd. 2 main bars on either side of the room and food to the left mad for a very crowded area.

Antoinette Hood

Its a nice place for the family.

Sandhya Sree

Best place to visit!!❤ It is free admission!!❤ Don't forget to visit gift store you will love everything in there!!❤

Jon Hinds

Birmingham has a gem here. Excellent museum.

CANADIAN CROCSLAYER

Damn best art gallery in the south put it on your list of things to go see it's worth it

Leland Presley

A gem right in the middle of our city. Such an amazing collection! Allow yourself 2-3 hours to walk, take your time and truly enjoy the art.

Alex Wright

I couldn't possibly do justice in a short review for Birmingham's world class Museum of Art

Shay burdette

The museum took us all around the world with many different cultures, the kids loved it!!! And it was free.

Jessica Seeley

always clean friendly staff and beautiful artwork

GLloyd Philpo'tt

Southern Korean, Native American, African, Wedgewood and Fashion Design exhibits, only partial list are worthy of a visit.

Valarie Rogers

Lots of great art representing various cultures in history.

Reese Barron

It was cool. I just wish the African gallery had a little more exhibits than just Pottery and Mask. Africa is so much more than that

Megan Hagerty

Free admission, so so much to see, clean, and a lot of fun. My mom, boyfriend, and I spent hours exploring and got through maybe half the museum or a little more

James Duke

A wonderful, free activity in downtown Birmingham. The museum was surprisingly large with a variety of exhibits. They also have an area for younger children to make their own art. Although we didn't eat there, the restaurant inside the museum seemed to be more upscale than I expected. Definitely a place worth a couple of hours if you're in the area.

Shri Rajan

The exhibits themselves aren't extravagant or unheard of, but the location is lovely. On the smaller side of art museums and easily worth a few hours of your time.

jeremy talley

Absolutely great place to go if u like painting and artifacts to look at and marvel over. Will be going back soon I hope!!!

Henry Greek

For the resources it has the BMA is very good, but there are areas where they have little focus. For modern African pottery and 18th century decorative arts, they are first rate. They need additions to Ancient and Medieval Europe (pre-Italian Renaissance), pre-19th century Africa, Oceania, Middle East, and American Pop Art.

Lee Moore

Oscars is cool and underrated. Best option to feel cosmopolitan at lunch in the ham. The monthly brunch is cool .

Ronnie Leonard

It is always pleasant and relaxing at the Bham Museum of Art. Go and dont forget to donate.

Ashlea Gibson

The museum had accessible parking and had a great variety of artifacts, relics, paintings, etc.

Mauricio Molina

Nice museum (free, a donation was given )excellent permanent and temporary collection, easy to walk and admire all the well descriptor displays, only wish they had a larger collection of mesoamerican cultures, personnel is very helpful. The Asian art has some rarities that we haven't seen before... And the painting on rock was very interesting... Highly recommended when you visit Birmingham...

Sheliah Goff

You can spend hours soaking in all the beautiful art!

Jeane Goforth

Always enjoy my visit.

Rory MacDonald

Wonderful diverse amount of art that is very nicely curated. The Wedgewood collection is really impressive ! Loved it and worth the visit

Vincent Parker

The experience was great and the art was magnificent I loved how where everything was placed and just had a really great time I would recommend anyone interested to go check It out

Fran Judd

I loved this museum! What a great collection.

Sade Clayton

The board game themed Art after five was amazingly fun. We played some games, purchased some drinks and then toured the museum after.

Ben Willis

Top notch. Considering this is free, I say this is a must experience for anyone in the Birmingham area. Great atmosphere and art.

B A Buckland

Wonderful collection of Wedgewood china.

Ali Reynolds

Art yes. Ignorance no. This place is free to the public so you have no reason for not visiting more often. Leave a donation. Brighten your world.

Kendon Ellerman

Really enjoyed my time at the museum. Lots of artwork to look at, spent over two hours looking around and I could have stayed longer. There are inside and outside exhibits. Beautiful fountain outside the museum. There were setting up for a wedding and reception, I was told that the reception money helps to fund the museum. The gift shop was kind of small, would have liked for it to be bigger with more variety of souvenirs and gifts.

K Lorello

This is a great collection and an enjoyable size. It also has great teaching areas in it. Sculptures outside were good also.

Mary A. Molloy

I just had the most amazing day! I got to Birmingham early this morning for a business trip. When I got here I knew that I had to go out and do something or I was going to fall asleep, which means no sleep for me tonight. My job will not start until this evening. So I went to the Birmingham Art Museum. Wow, it was amazing! It was so eclectic. A little bit of everything. Like a mini Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY. There are so many collections to see. I never expected it. There is something for everybody here. And the food! It was like being in a gourmet restaurant. Who would expect that in a museum cafeteria? And everyone is so nice! Southern hospitality is Alive and well in Birmingham Alabama!

Sam Whately

Spatial museum with a surprisingly large catalogue. Good for indoor wandering with some outdoor space if the weather is decent.

azrina abdullah

Found a lone Monet, which was a really nice surprise..and a few Rodins. Didn't expect to see these in Birmingham. Great place to visit and after, do cross over to the park for a nice historic walk along the court house.

Edric Bryant

It would take me days to take in all that the BMoA has to offer, but it is also a favorite destination for my boys. On the second floor is Bart's Art Adventure; two rooms of interactive artistic play that my children love.

Yesenia Lopez

We had a tour guide, she was nice and everything had a story to it , it is very nice art

Nikki Guthrie

This is probably one of the best art museums I've ever seen!! It's free and VERY BIG! I would recommend starting with the second floor first and then going down. There are many exhibits and different types of art, so that's amazing. I am not sure about parking for this place (I parked elsewhere), but it is definitely walkable. There are pretty gardens outside, and the gift shop is very reasonably priced. Staff are friendly! There are also stairs, elevators, bathrooms, and drinking foundations throughout the place. Would highly recommend to anyone who's interested in global and local art!

TrialsofLife

I recently visited the museum to look at the Barbie exhibit. It wasn't what I was expecting because it only showed what looked like living room settings through out the decades. I was expecting Barbie through the decades and how she has changed. I notice that Barbie had a large room and will be shown through some of 2020 as well. I was told by one of the staff that the museum is planning and exhibit for indigenous people in detail for about 3 rooms I believe. I am disappointed that the museum in my years of living and growing up in Birmingham, Alabama. I have never seen that much work or effort put into the details of black history connecting African history. The museum seems to actively represent other cultures over one culture (being African American, black, and African culture). African have a deep rooted history in the state of Alabama but it seems that our culture has been almost excluded in the Birmingham art museum. In speaking to one of your workers I asked if there would be anything in depth for black history month in February to June which is black music month and I was told that the museum only does the bare minimum. Which broke my heart since I am a lover of the arts. The museum as so many galleries inside to exhibit things from other countries, Christian religion and the way the white people live in the Victorian Era but I cannot go there to learn anything of my own culture but can learn almost everything about everyone else culture through the years in detail. The Birmingham art museum needs to do better in its black balling of African American culture first before giving an entire room to a doll.

Tracy Andrews

School fieIdtrip .Great people who work here.

Miriacera Roawr

It had a great atmosphere,I would love to go back !

Jessica Nelson

Great little museum. Solid kid play area, nice exhibits, cafe was excellent for lunch.

Barrie L. Limerick

A true Birmingham gem. World class museum.

Angie S

Great way to spend a rainy day learning about different kinds of art and artist

Tyler Pockitt

They have an amazing exhibit for Barbie right now . Done by all female artist and it’s free . I get like a child again. Great exhibit for children and you can touch everything

Brenda-renee Vance

Our first time coming to Alabama and this was an awesome place to visit.

Megan Illanes

Beautiful art, very well kept and well done museum!

LingTina V

Tip: The disabled entrance is in the parking lot, on the side of the building and not the front. The staff members were kind and knowledgeable. They encourage you to take photos, just make sure to turn off the flash on your camera. I went for the Japanese Heritage Festival and stayed to check out more exhibitions. I enjoyed my visit under the gentle lighting.

Danny Evans

Unique restaurant with good selection of regular fare and not common fare. Tried both and dessert too and very good. Wait staff very good

Tiffany Terry

Maybe it's because my expectations weren't too high, but I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of artworks. Paintings, antique furniture, dishes and ceramics, sculptures.. every era/genre seems to be covered. They have a gift shop, cafe, and children's area as well! A definite "must do" for anyone living in the Ham. (Fun Fact: They even have a Monet). Free admission, donations welcome!

Katty Kat

I don't come here often, but they hold great events here such as the Japanese Heritage Festival and various Teen Nights throughout the year. They also have a mixture of paid and free classes to take here through the week. Lovely art museum with a lovely sculpture graden along with it. A great place to go and view art. Did i mention that it is FREE?! There is also a donation box if you want to contribute to it. It has two floors which you can access through various stairs or an elevator. Seats and benches are scattered throughout the museum for those who need breaks along with audio/books to read about the art. Great place to take pictures as well and just hangout with friends. Art is seperated through types and time period. There are permanent installations as well as traveling installations so check their website often to see what's new.

Jonathan Dennison

Great museum terrible staff/security. After walking my 2yr old through 5 or more exibits I picked my son up due to 1 going to the furniture exhibit and 2 he was tired of walking and was told I was not allowed to hold him. So I appologize for any hand prints on the 1700/1800s modern.

Selina M

I love coming here!! They have so many different exhibits and it’s not just limited to hanging art. There is a great culture representation here and they do a terrific job organizing the pieces. This is a must visit!!

Linda Fletcher

Excellent exhibit. Plus free admission. Donations encouraged.

kevin ammons

My family had a blast at the Art After 5:Harry Potter Night. Beautiful art exhibits and the staff was very friendly.

Horacio Sierra

The quality and diversity of the museum’s collection is impressive. They have traditional European art from Spain, Italy, and France representing the Medieval and Renaissance eras in addition to Japanese warrior armour; Nigerian pottery; and pre-Hispanic ceramics, statues, and tools from throughout Central and South America. I especially liked the Northern Native American art work because instead of consisting of ancient artifacts, it was mostly work created by artists from the twentieth and twenty-first century, which allowed for a more immediate connection. Don’t miss this museum!

Leah Johnson

Masterpieces in multiple mediums. Attentive staff. Well curated.

Eva Gordon

We were lucky because in addition to the normal displays, there was also a temporary exhibition of some drawings by Leonardo da Vinci. We saw the Staffordshire Hoard, some great paintings and sculptures, ceramics, stained glass.......there was too much to see in one visit, so we completely missed the Egyptian treasures (and lots more I'm sure!). We had a delicious, reasonably priced lunch in the Edwardian tea room, and later walked to visit the National Trust back-to-back houses.

Tia Harding

Absolutely loves the Art on the Rocks event!

fun toys videos

best Place to take your kids

David Hensley

This museum is incredible and completely free. We spent about 3 hours there wandering and reading all the incredible descriptions of the great historical significance of each piece.

Alex Williams

Arts on the Rock, has great music, food and fun. I recommend doing the scavenger hunt if they're hosting one.

Anne Hicks

We went specifically to see the "Stafford-shire Hoard" , a treasure trove of Saxon gold found in a farmer's field. It was a well-displayed area, for children too, as there were 2 groups of school children enjoying and learning about the find. We had to ask where the famous helmet was displayed, as it is in a different area. We spent time in the Pre-Raphealite area , with beautiful paintings and sculptures, my favourite being "The Last of England" by the artist Ford Madox Brown, we listened in on a guide with another group of students. These were local artists, so a meaningful exhibition, although some paintings were travelling around the country. The top floor is all about Birmingham and how the city has evolved: easy to follow, with artifacts, recordings, and graphics. All in all, a great way to spend a day learning about this area of the Midlands.

Opal Gordon

We thoroughly enjoyed a couple of hours here before “Museum fatigue” took over - there’s too much to see in one visit. The friendly staff were really keen to engage and highlight some of the key things to look out for, which added to the experience. I’m not sure that enough is always made of some of the greatest exhibits, and the interpretation is rather flat. It feels as if it could benefit from an injection of life and extra creativity, but it’s a great place overall - especially as it’s free of charge.

Fauna Stevens

Love that the museum is free and if you can get a spot, the museum parking lot is free as well. They only suggest a $3 donation. The museum has a kids area as well.

R33dyr3

Location was easy to find. Very pretty and neat. I enjoyed myself there

Joseph Barchue

I enjoyed viewing scores of fantastic abstract artworks on display.

Julia Nelson

Many beautiful exhibits with something for everyone! Some exhibits are permanent and others change regularly! Check the website before you go so you don’t miss anything! Also, their Art On The Rocks event is good, adult fun.

J Lewis

Wonderful museum with great balance of art from across the globe. I enjoyed their European art and was so pleased to see their samurai exhibit. If you are less familiar with Eastern art and myths, the museum has audio guides and informative panels with a bit more depth than artist, dating, and location. They offer tours in Spanish and have a great exploration area for kids. Bring a quarter for a locker or practice puppy dog eyes to borrow one from a fellow patron.

Emily Armstrong

Absolutely a must-do for tourists. If you’re going with kids, here is what you need to know: The museum is free. I recommend bringing a dollar or two for the donation box in the foyer though. The washrooms and drinking fountains are close to the entrance of the museum. They also have small storage lockers near the washrooms for you to store belongings. They do not allow bottled water in the galleries. They will ask you to leave your water bottle at the front with security. They have portable, lightweight stools available. I do recommend taking one if you are not used to standing or walking for long periods of time. Having a stool available for a seven-year-old who is starting to get crabby while you look at grown-up art is helpful too. BRING SNACKS. But only eat them in the Art Garden. I cannot stress enough how necessary the snacks are. The kids’ interactive area is wonderful. They have two separate rooms, one for younger children and the other for older children. My kids had a great time learning about pottery, still life paintings, and Chinese brush painting. Everyone we interacted with at the gallery was pleasant, professional, and were happy to have children there. Highly recommended as a high quality trip for low/no cost.

Chloe P

This is a wonderful museum with a great selection. Pretty large, and the admission is free! Definitely would recommend if visiting the Birmingham area or are a local looking for something to do on the weekend. I donated a few dollars and would recommend doing as well since they have so many great exhibits and a kind staff.

Catherine Lowes

Great place to visit if you’re exploring the city. Stuff is friendly. Expositions are seasonal, so checking the website prior visiting is helpful.

John Bandy

Fantastic place! I despise art and only went because my girlfriend had a project there. I was happily impressed. The woman at the front desk was enormously helpful. The guards were professional and the art was interesting.

Anne Calvert

Staff was super friendly and thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits.

OctoberWinds14

One of my favorite places to visit in Birmingham.I love the art here, and the new exhibits are always nice to look at. The sculpture garden is also one of my favorite spots in the museum. Great collection of art from different areas across the world and time periods. It’s a great place to go if you have some time on your hands in Birmingham, plus there is no entrance fee to get in!

Kendy Morales

Beautiful painting and sculptures I recommend this museum

Deb Mar

This is another free gift the city of Birmingham shares with the public and it has a parking lot. The staff is just full of friendly smiles and offers of help. The museum is full of interesting objects to see.

Cedricka Jackson

Very nice wish they had more modern art

Rosa Baez

Loved it! Great art collection and free to the public

tammy watkins

Very knowledgeable things to see and learn.

Ritesh Sevalkar

Nice place. Must visit at least once.

Bill Pautler

Birmingham has got a nice art museum if you're in town and haven't been and like museums it's worth an hour or two

Ashley Sims

They have a good selection of art pieces. The admission is free but donations are recommend. There is a small parking lot next to the building.

Stef Bernal-Martinez

The artists represented in their contemporary and modern art collections are racially diverse. That’s incredibly important to me in visiting art museums. If that’s important to you, then this museum will deliver. I was only saddened to miss an Amy Shetland piece because it was currently on loan elsewhere. Excited to come back and explore this museum again & again.

Veronica Lathan

I had lunch with my 90 year old Mother and sister for her birthday she enjoyed it and was very pleased with everything.

Kayla Harris

Had a good time at the Art After 5: Harry Potter event. My fav was the wand making.

Joanette Clemons

Awesome exhibits! Safe secure, spotlessly clean activity area for children.

Samantha Polk

Nice place to go spend a little time. Nothing like heritage art. No mummies tho

Nekita Clark

Wow. Just wow. Art speaks to my soul. Just spend a day on the strip and enjoy all that Birmingham has to offer. I learned so much.

RONALD LEVERETT

If I had culture would have liked it better but I love looking at old items.

Charlie Mahan

Open displays with enough lighting properly applied for ease of viewing. The food at the cafe is also pricy but excellent. I'll be back.

Chadwick Sentell

We took the family and the kids really enjoyed the scavenger hunt. This a great free local attraction! I really enjoyed the renaissance section.

Robin White

Took the drive into Birmingham to the Art Museum. It was a lovely collection. A lot of the museum reminded me of the Carlos Museum at Emory in Atlanta. They both have good representationsof Asian, African and native art as week as the usual Egyptian artifacts, European and American art. It was a good trip if you love art. My traveling companion does, so she really enjoyed it.

Graydon Yatabe

What a great place to spend a few hours! It is much bigger than we expected, with a wonderful variety of exhibits and collections, both permanent and visiting. Chihuly, folk art, art from across east/southeast/south asia, and more. I've never seen Korean art featured as significantly as here, and I've been to quite a few art museums across the U.S. and Canada. And it's free?! Thank you Birmingham!

Ellie

I'm so glad this place is always free. Its a great place to just go and hangout with friends and admire the art.

Bailee Hollis

Absolutely wonderful museum, I am definitely excited about going back already! There's lots of ground to cover, so if you haven't been, be prepared for an all day adventure!

Andrew Chaney

Great museum! They have a nice kids area and an art scavenger hunt that kept our kids engaged through the museum. And it's free!

eric napier

Art on the Rocks is a great event they have at the BMoA. It's a little crowded but a nice time.

Bevan Shores

I took two of my great nieces (3 and 7) to the library for hands on fun in Bart's ARTventure. In this space for children, you will not hear Do Not Touch! Here children are encouraged to explore, experiment and create. We spent more than an hour - created an ugly holiday sweater, experimented with calligraphy on a special table using water, decorated a real vase, moved large magnet pieces around on a piece of wall art, wove fabric, used magnets to build, looked at art books and (the favorite) used an app on the tablets to create pottery works of art. We took a break for lunch at Oscar's - great food and kid friendly. After lunch, the girls wanted to see the rest of the museum. It was so fun to hear them find similarities with the art they had been exploring in the children's area.

Larry Stewart

Simply awesome place. Why? Because of the exhibitions. I loved it. The atmosphere was also welcoming, quiet and stunning. Very beautiful rooms. Nice and tasty food. Great staff, lovely people around. Very enjoyed!

Rachael Edwards

Wide variety, well laid out, and something for everyone. Love how open it was so we could wander freely and look. Disappointed some of the audio installations didn't work fully but was not disappointed overall. There were children of all ages through adulthood and everyone seemed to find something that captivated them. Would definitely return if in the area. Walking distance to lots of cool things downtown.

Mortimer Calhoun

Everyone who visits or resides in and/or around Birmingham should make it a point to visit.

James Harmon

A world class museum nestled in little bitty Birmingham.

Jimmeisha Williams

This place has a whole area designated for children. It's peaceful fun and inspiring. Get messy. The curlygirl upstairs is soooooo good with children. Will be back with more cash. It's like an educational mommy trip that will inspire your children.

Gary Stambaugh

Great art museum for a family trip. Very nice facilities with open spaces.

Lori Long

We arrived late and had a brief visit but I loved the silhouette exhibition!

yosoydame

Free museum with a lot to offer and see. Worth checking out!

My sons and I had a great time. There was an art scavenger hunt for children, art from students in the Birmingham area, and beauty all around us. It was a wonderful way to spend time together.

Drewfus9

This museum is pretty large and contains a lot of good artwork. If you are interested at all in art, I would highly recommend coming here. The best part - it’s completely free.

Dean Whalen

The Birmingham Museum of Art is a masterpiece in itself. The museum is comprised of so many beautiful exhibits and artifacts. The place is really good option to visit with family. Moreover, the museum offers many activities for kids where they can have learning as well as fun. There is something for everyone to enjoy. This is a wonderful place.

Areanna Robertson

All people should visit this PLACE. Its amazing and historical for Magic City

Miesha Phillips

Great diversity, free for all!

Theresa C

This was a pretty nice place to visit. I wish there was more though. I think more paintings would be really cool, as well as a section on Egypt! There were A LOT of pottery items and little knickknacks that didn't interest me personally, but it was still cool to see. It wasnt very busy so I think Sunday's are a good time to go to avoid crowds.

K Ammons

Beautiful no charge art museum with unique art displays. We spent several hours and still could have stayed longer. Birmingham is so blessed with fantastic fine art collections. We ate lunch at Oscar's which was excellent both in food and service. The Gift shop has some unusal gift selections. This is a worthwhile venue to visit.

Paul Hamer

A wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Their collections have magnificent examples of art history. All exhibits are beautifully lit and displayed so you can enjoy them to the fullest. Go, bring your children, family and friends to share this fun and educational experience.

Johnny Harrington

Wonderful collection of art, and admission is free! Beautiful gardens, the restaurant on site is actually good (sometimes when they have a captive audience, the food is sub par - not so, here.) I could spend hours in this place, and I often do.

Jeremy R33D

I really enjoyed the different pieces of art displayed here. Very inspiring environment

Kristen W.

I love taking my kiddos to Bart's room. A lot of hands-on activities. Staff is friendly.

caroline drake

Very interesting place to visit and especially for free.

TaShundra Robinson

My friend and I brought our kids here for a play date. The kids enjoyed the scavenger hunt and that kid play area. We all were able to enjoy the beautiful art and the spacious rooms. I appreciate that the art museum only ask for donations. We frequently support the museum in various ways and always enjoy ourselves.

Farron Della

This art museum is free! Please; however, consider bringing cash so you can make a donation and drop it in the box on the way in. This museum is wonderful, with a large selection of art and also hosts changing exhibits. If you’re from around the Birmingham area, see it in bursts so you can really absorb it! If you’re a visitor, welcome :) Get a coffee before you go by so you can really take it all in.

Jay Cobbs

Not as good as Houston's but still good.

Mary Moss

Activities for all ages. Please visit! You won’t be disappointed!

Birmingham is currently replacing the bridges through the downtown area, so road closings can be a challenge. We were able to get in and out with no trouble. Now they can't wait to make another visit and I will enjoy taking them.
