I have done several cross country moves with various moving companies, and this company is HANDS DOWN THE WORST MOVING COMPANY I HAVE EVER HAD THE DISPLEASURE TO DO BUSINESS WITH. After the initial estimate and signing process, everything was a nightmare. On the packing day, two movers showed up to pack when there were supposed to be four, claiming two people had called in sick. The following day, My actual load date, the movers arrived three hours late. And when they came into my house, the first words out of their mouth were, “we will never be able to finish this today...NO WAY.” I replied that I was closing on my house the following day and that they had to finish. They eventually got everything packed and moved out at 8pm with a lot of complaining and calls to their boss in Missoula. The movers were, with one exception, all rude and unprofessional (one even mentioned that he had to go to a court date the following day). I waited over eight days after loading with not a word, and when I called (BECAUSE THEY NEVER CONTACTED ME FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER AND ALWAYS EXPECTED ME TO CALL THEM). When I spoke with a representative I’ve the phone, he claimed a truck had arrived in Montana fuller than anticipated, and only a portion of my goods could be loaded (this all would have been a mystery to me had a not called and insisted upon information). The rest, he claimed, would arrive “as soon as they could get another driver.” When the first shipment arrived, nearly two weeks after my load date, only about 20% of my things made it. My bed was delivered without a crucial piece, and could not be assembled. My couch was delivered without legs. My kitchen and bathroom things were also non-existent. So basically this made my apartment uninhabitable, and I had to find alternate housing. I then waited another TWO-AND-A-HALF-WEEKS (and nearly a month after my load date), to receive the rest of my things. They called the second shipment an “overflow shipment,” but when 80% of your things are being delivered I think that is a laughable misnomer. When my things finally did arrive, the missing bed part and couch legs were still missing. Countless additional items were missing as well, and a significant percentage of my items were not inventoried or marked. Further, the second driver revealed that when he was loading my “overflow shipment” the company in Montana did not even know what the first driver had taken because they made no record of it. I also noticed, as I was unpacking, that some of the pharmaceutical painkillers I had forgotten to set aside (from an old dental procedure), were missing as well. They were clearly stolen by the packers/movers in Montana (who I can only assume by their rudeness and incompetent packing and moving skills were drug users). This moving job was indeed so utterly incompetent that BOTH drivers at my destination were EMBARRASSED. Lastly, my car, which was moved by a third-party company contracted by this Missoula-based franchise, arrived at my destination damaged. The claim I filed was denied. The claim I filed two weeks ago on my bed is still unresolved. I plan to file more claims for all my missing items. Long story short, AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS. They are the worst of the worst, and the people they hire to pack and move your things can not be trusted.

We utilized Montana Transfer Co. last fall for our move, and we were extremely pleased with the service we received. We moved out of a house we'd been in for 27 years. The crew was on time, very attentive to keeping things clean while they worked, very conscientious of taking great care of our belongings, and very hard working. They didn't chit-chat and were in constant motion getting the job done. They were polite and respectful at all times, and made what could have been a very nerve wreaking day a truly great experience. Well worth every penney, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them and would be happy to hire them again... in fact if possible we'd like to use them for my mother when she moves out of her house after 35 years! Kudos to a great job done!

Montana Transfer canceled on me five hours before my move. When I talked to the GM and mentioned I'd confirmed with them just the day before he yelled "you need to lose the attitude" and then hung up on me. I called back and he hung up again. When I spoke to the owner's wife about this, she said "well, he must just be having a tough day." I'm stunned by this experience. Worst business, worst client service. Do not hire Montana Transfer. They're awful.

Goods arrived 10 days later than promised. Much damage, including irreplaceable family heirlooms, and some lost items. "One star" is a generous appraisal. We'll see how the claims process with North American goes, but given what's happened so far I am not optimistic.

Lori Shawgo

Nice people, but they left some things off the truck that were to go and took things that were to stay-charging us to pack them. Main reason for only one star is that we were estimated to cost $5500... we got rid of quite a lot before moving and our bill was $8000!

The movers that Montana Transfer and North American Van Lines brokered to move me showed up to my house five days later than the agreed upon date window. I was not made aware of this until the first scheduled day that I was supposed to be moved. The day of the move, the driver showed up 5 hours late. I spent an hour on the phone with Shannon in North American's Customer Service department. Although she was polite and understanding, she could not help us. Communication, performance, and professionalism exhibited by Montana Transfer was poor. We will likely be filing a formalized claim against North American for the delay hardship we endured, directly resulting from MT Transfer's incompetence. The $200 rebate offered as compensation for the delays incurred is not acceptable.

Most of the people I worked with were beyond excellent. The Montana Transfer team was always available and willing to work with me and my driver, Bruce, was so friendly and worked very hard. I would have given 5 stars, but the crew that was loaded me didn’t show the first day, then worked very slow the next day, which pushed us into a third day. It seemed like they made the driver do most of the work. Thank goodness for him- I don’t think it would have been done otherwise.

Support Staff & Receptionists are nice. Very EXPENSIVE for a small move & one box had an OIL STAIN INSIDE with CLOTHING inside! NO LINER EITHER - so Wool Coats were against the oil stain. The owner never returned my calls. After a week, I finally reached him & he had no apologies for such an awful mistake. Next time I will call a stranger on Craigslist to help with a small move This is the 1st NEGATIVE REVIEW I have ever written because I believe in giving businesses - especially small businesses - a chance to fix problems but Montana Transfer had their chance & blew it.

I had a very pleasant experience. Communication was great. Pick up and delivery on time as promised.

We recently relocated to California from Missoula and used Montana Transfer for our relocation. Our experience was less than fun. The two guys that arrived to load our stuff did a horrible job. Most of our stuff arrived damaged and we will be filing claims. Notably they packaged our new king mattress by taking it off the bed frame with the sheet on it still and using a huge ratchet strap to fasten it to the inside wall of there moving vehicle (Luckily we took photos of this situation). When asked if they had a bag or box for it they said that they had forgotten it. Aside from this claim we had multiple things that didn't even get a box and were just set on the ground...printer as an example. They also put cast iron against new appliances without protection which in turn scratched and damaged finishes. One of the movers used a glass for drinking and then packed it without cleaning it. Kitchen stuff was almost like they took the drawers out and turned them upside down into the moving box, slapped some paper on top and taped it shut. Late by 3 hours to load. Chain smoking was awesome during the whole loading experience as well. To top off the experience, one of the movers had asked if I was going to miss anything about Montana. I replied that I would miss hunting...to which he replied. "At least you can hunt Mexicans" YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT! This guy is in my house loading my stuff and say this!! Don't recommend these guys at all. To bad they are only one of the few options in Missoula.

The movers were very nice as was the staff, but it took two weeks to get our belongings moved from MT to CA. We were fortunate to have family here with whom we could stay, otherwise, it would have cost a small fortune. When moving from MT, be sure you can get efficient delivery.

Jeff Lintz

We had to change the date of our move 3 times a week before we were scheduled to leave. Montana transfer was more than accommodating every step of the way and helped us from start to finish! Thank you Montana transfer for making our stressful move so much easier.

Do not use this moving company. You literally cannot choose a worse business to give your money to. The only smooth part was getting a quote. After that, nothing went according to plan. It took several emails and many days to receive information about the actual pickup date. The pickup truck was late. It was also very difficult to receive an estimate of the delivery date. The worst problem was the dishonest billing. I was told that I was about 1,000 pounds under the estimate. I also waived the special insurance and should have seen about an extra $500 savings on the final bill. Instead, I was billed not only for the full estimated weight, I was also charged a $200 overage fee. I sent multiple emails over about a month, and received no response. I finally had to ask corporate to get involved. In the end, only a fraction of the overcharge was refunded to me.

Terrible service! Do not use this company- Once they got our $12,000 they didn't care if we got our stuff or not. The packers spent more time talking and taking breaks than they did packing. They didn't pack room by room. Stuff from one room ended up in another box. They have breached the contract as the promise to have our stuff to us by the 5th was not upheld... go somewhere else if you need to be moved!!

We had a wonderful experience with our move from rural Montana to rural Wyoming. Not easy areas to service, but they did so painlessly! From the estimate process all the way through to delivery, everything was organized and low stress. They were exactly where they said they would be when they said they would be there, almost to the minute. Vic and Chris worked very hard and did everything they could to help us. Thank you for making our move as easy as possible!

This outfit will steel your stuff and beat the rest of it to death!!

Daniel Beals

This company is aweful. The guy who comes out for the estimate is very nice and explains how they love personalized service. But that’s where it ends- empty talk. You can’t get anyone to return calls. Poor communication about when the truck will arrive, load and be at destination. We had more things broken or damaged than in any other move in 30 years! Find someone else unless you like added aggravations and stress when moving!
