REVIEWS OF The Mahoning Drive-in Theater IN Pennsylvania

10/10 would visit again. We drove for 3.5 hours for the Indiana Jones night. It was worth every second!

jonah stahl

The Mahoning Drive-In is my happy place. Friendly, eclectic atmosphere with a constantly changing lineup of fantastic films. The snack bar's prices cannot be beat, as mentioned in other reviews. It's a unique environment with a great fan base. For $10 extra, you're allowed to camp overnight. If you've never been here, I urge you to make the drive, bring the family, and enjoy a night at the drive-in like no other. Check their Facebook page to see what films are playing next.

Christopher L

I can't say enough about how great this place is. It is an old school drive-in with a great environment. You can sleep overnight for a little extra money. They have really awesome horror marathons, as well as other themes. I literally love this place.

Jerry Tidd

Unique. Films presented in 35mm film! If you ever come, be sure to pack a tent and sleeping bags, because they offer CAMPING on the lot. Great snacks and clean bathrooms.

Michael Skellie

Fantastic experience! Nice work to the folks providing it.

Elizabeth Shaak

This place and the people who work here are awesome! Great film experience!

T B

A step back in time. A unique drive in theatre as they still show 35mm film. You can't get this atmosphere anywhere else! Very laid back, you can even camp overnight. Excellent!

conformitybites

They are still going and getting stronger. They only play retro movies now all on 35 mm film! Lots of movie events and camping every Friday and Saturday night for only $10 a car load. Concession food is excellent and does not cost a fortune. Biggest screen in the area and every spot is a great spot to park! Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome! Spread the word!

Dana Swanger

We’ve been here twice since we discovered it this summer. We love the old school vibe and 35mm films. The staff are all great and full of personality, they run a lot later in the year than other drive-ins, and we can bring our dog, who absolutely loves these trips to the drive-in. They have a lot of selections at the refreshment stand, but everything we’ve tried so far has been kind of awful. lol The food isn’t the reason we come though, so we still love it!

John Swann

It's nice that there is still at least one drive in theater still around.

Derek S

A trip into movie history. Can't go wrong here, price is right, film selection is fantastic, great way to spend a night!

Bryan Deffley

A true hidden treasure. See great double (or triple!) features of classic films on glorious 35mm.

Andrew M. MacBride

Excellent place to see movies. Drive-in theatres were a common thing way before my time, so it's great to see a place like this this open. Friendly staff, reasonable prices, and an experience like no other (if you haven't been to a drive-in before). Best part (for the film buffs), they use 35mm whenever they can!

Gina Pala

Total throw back!! So fun & well organized.

Eric Zrinsky

Absolute blast. Great staff, great food, great movies. Well worth the drive!

Donna Gardner

Staff is great and welcoming. Love that you can buy tapes. Food is priced to sell and really love the set up. Love the feel of the place. Can't wait to go again!

Map 56

Fun drive-in for families and adults. Worth the drive. Beautiful rural setting with optional camping. Great way to feel nostalgic with older movies! Friendly and accommodating staff! If you have not seen it check out the documentary At the Drive-In. It tells you all about the magic of Mahoning Drive-In.

Dan Steinman

Such a cool place! Fun for the whole family or even just the adults! Drove almost 2 hours with traffic to see Woodstock (1970) on 35mm! Totally worth it! Plus they showed a secret movie afterwards! It's an absolutely incredible time! Not to mention the staff were all super nice! And they show the movies that you're not going to see ANYWHERE else! And all for only 10 Dollars per ticket! They offer camping on site as well, although I'm not sure of the pricing but am sure it is reasonable! This is definitely a place I recommend visiting! I plan on going back soon!

Craig Formont

Well worth the hike from Philadelphia. Instant fan!

Ryan Puckette

I wish to go see the new Power Rangers Movie here.

NIKOLAI WERSINGER

Love the place trying to get ahold of them to see if there hiring can't get ahold of them

Deja Gravy

Mahoning Drive-In is a truly unique place. Every experience I've had there is totally pleasant. I can't recommend this place to enough people. Long live 35 millimeter film!!!!

Anthony Dick

Was a great time. Staff was friendly. Loved the vhs and vinyl. Plus the games amd retro stuff was great. Love love love the old school hulk Hogan. Great job guys. Me and my daughter will be back again.

wevebeeenhad

I gave this place 5 stars until my most recent visit... Keep in mind that I LOVE this drive in.... But I do not like that they have the fire barrel after the movies solely for the reason that by the time the movies are done it's very late, and people gather at the fire and are quite loud. So if you are camping and want to get any sleep at all, DO NOT set up camp by the fire barrel (to the right of the snack shack). You will be kept awake until 4 in the morning by loud people who are seemingly unaware that there are people all around them who are trying to sleep.

Just came back home from a weekend of ..being out in the final frontier.. The Mahoning is one of those really rare gems on the Google Map. Yes, stay for the awesome cult classic/vintage movie marathons! Bring your tents, bug spray and enjoy the drive in the way it's supposed to be enjoyed...Oh, the stories The Mahoning Drive-In could tell. The line up is always one of well cultivated REAL Reel to Reel movies!! A very large and awesome collection of ever rotating visuals can be witnessed. Some of the most ultra friendly & respectful movie buffs ..or if you will time and space travelers from out of state brimming with film trivia you will find (all depending on the films being shown is who's going to show up) There the amazing human lifeforms that keep this place going, (while some could be mistaken as aliens ..seriously, I think they run around and shed their skin ..when the clock hits a certain time....) Yet none of that, is in comparison to the popcorn and now (yes, Seriously, it was voted on..)Capt's Now Legendary French Fries.. This place is just awesome. See ya next time!

Cas K

I love it so much here and wish it could be year round.

riff viana

I love this place! A drive-in movie that you can camp out in--what an excellent idea!

katherine serrano

Friendly atmosphere. Value for your money. Thoughtful pairing of double features. Snacks and drinks reasonable. For film buffs and vinyl collectors , a selection available for a small donation. Love this drive-in

Monica Williams

We went for Christmas in July and had a lovely evening. They played A Christmas Story and Elf.

Morgan Cody

While only open seasonally and even then on weekends, they're always showing something obscure gems or old favorites.

Keith H

What a great experience filled with nostalgia

celticorthodox

The only Drive-In Theatre of it's kind in the world, showing exclusively vintage drive-in rarities including vintage horror and sci-fi on one of the last remaining mammoth screens in the Drive-In Theatre industry. Nestled deep in the seclusion of the Pocono Mountains gives it that additional special effect to some late night flicks. Friendly staff and great snacks. Highly recommend this Drive-In!!

Robert

Very good experience and really love the old horror movies!!! Definitely coming back soon!!

Jenny R

By far the best drive in movie theatre I've been to. The staff are friendly and the concession lines aren't long. The best part is you can actually go camping. If you're looking for a great experience with some classic charm, then I highly recommend this place.

Tamara Dunn

Fantastic themes for each weekend if you are a fan of offbeat and scary movies. The staff is friendly and the concessions are not bad. It's very campy in a good way, too. Don't be intimidated that it's in the middle of nowhere. It's worth the trip.

chris nelson

Cool retro drive in Innovative way to present 35mm film. Love this place and the great people who operate it!! Check out the independent film about the mahoning Drive in and gain huge insight into the love and devotion these people have for the place .

Lyle Moyer

Great retro destination and fun staff.

Chase Kahle

Excellent employees and guests. Great vibes and fun movies. Will return!

jwtaptich

Absolutely fantastic experience. A place for true film fans like no other.

Alex Duffy

This place is exactly what I had hoped for. A very classic drive-in experience, complete with snacks and great hard-to-find films. The staff was welcoming and fun (Bigfoot even came to visit for the creature feature weekend I attended) and they clearly know their stuff. Lots of fun goodies inside including some gem VHS tapes for donation. The mounds in the lot allow nice viewing even from the back. There is also camping, which I will DEFINITELY be enjoying next year. My one and only complaint is the lack of hot water in the (women's) bathroom. Not a deal breaker by any means, but I was a little surprised lol.

Amy Brenneman

I go as often as I can, it's a good place.

Charlie Beach

Better than the Drive-Out theater I went to. Not entirely sure how that even worked.

Nancy Clark

This place is amazing you should go. You would have a lot of fun.

Joseph Morgan

I found out about this place about a month ago and attended for the first time last night. It was night #2 of Schlock-O-Rama 3. The experience was amazing! There really is something about watching older movies (especially B-level horror flicks) at a drive-in; the venue adds to the experience. For example, there’s an utterly ridiculous kill scene early on during the movie Octaman, which caused a group behind me to laugh their butts off and wildly cheer...which caused a similar response from everyone else at the drive-in! I could have streamed all of the movies at home for free, but the movies would have been dull or at least a huge piece would have been missing without that magical communal experience. Everything is priced pretty cheaply. Some customers complain that folks are charged individually instead of per car. Let’s be honest, $10 per adult for anywhere between two and four movies is a steal...the whole point is for the place to make enough $ to stay open. Facilities and offerings are extremely basic, the place has barely been updated since the late 1940s or so...it works more for those that enjoy rustic charm and who can go with the flow. What it lacks in looks and modern creature comforts, it more than makes up for in character thanks to its mission of preserving the authentic, original 35mm drive-in experience and also through the efforts and friendliness of the wonderful staff. The concession stand offers the most basic of foods which are both tasty and kind of terrible at the same time...stuff like burgers, dogs, fries, tots, pizzas, and popcorn. I vouch for the popcorn in particular...free refills when you grab a large and they seem to liberally dispense the butter if you show some enthusiasm for it! Even if you don’t buy any food, consider stopping by and adding a few dollars to their tip jar; my understanding is that all staff volunteer their time and energy. It’s frustrating I didn’t find this place earlier, but I loved the experience last night and hope to attend as many evenings and weekends as life allows in the spring and summer seasons. More than that, I hope this review/love letter encourages many more people, especially those with really large families and social groups to attend!

Jessica White

I am in love with this place! I only wish I'd discovered it sooner. They're the only drive in theater showing vintage films. They are a little hard to find the first time you go and the food options aren't amazing, especially if you have sensitivities, but the staff and atmosphere are amazing and the food is so reasonably priced. Everyone is so helpful and friendly. The movie choices are a blast! The vintage intermission ads are the best. It's so nostalgic. There's also a huge collection of vinyl and VHS for sale. I can't wait until the next season starts!

darren alexander

Quality place. My first drive in theatre. 87.3fm so bring a radio so you dont have to rely on your car. Foods served here: popcorn for $2, fries, drinks (no alcohol), candy, pizza, basic nachos and a few other things...all extremely cheap. Fun funky place to walk around. Recommended and probably will be back at some point.

Matt J

This place is life!

George Christ

Always a great time

Mike Reed

Awesome place for that retro drive in experience

William Meyer

Drove by recently (June 2019) and saw that it's reopened. Can't wait to go again! It's a long way from me, but had the best time with my kids years ago. Really big screen!

William Trowbridge

This place is awesome. I'm definitely coming back and I'm telling everyone I know to come check it out too. I'm glad places like this still exist.

Kristine Nester

Awesome place!!!!

Richard Carney

Awesome place for some family fun! Definitely a must do.

Daniel Salefski

Great place for a drive in movie experience. The new owners are great and really care about the history of the movie industry. We went for the Harry Potter marathon, the kids and I had a ton of fun. Please get out and support this amazing place. There are so few drive-ins left.

Leslie Anne

A really fun evening, with good snacks at reasonable prices. Definitely will go again!

Kelly Brenneman

Awesome time. Camped overnight

michal balcerzak

The Mahoning Drive-In is fantastic for a date, a family outing, or just a taste of something classic. The movies are great and the experience is super unique. You won't regret it! The snack bar serves great food at unbelievable prices. You wont find the outlandish prices of standard movie theaters, instead you've got amazing fries, burgers and corndogs (yes CORNDOGS!!!) for about $3 each! The prices are just as classic as the experience. On top of all that dogs are allowed (as long as they are fairly quiet) and on Friday and Saturdays you can even spend the night camping right on the grounds. I can't recommend this place enough, and I look forward to seeing countless movies there in the future!

Frank Young

So much fun. I wish there were more drive ins left

Michael Schmersahl

From April to October, this is the place to be every Friday and Saturday night. Awesome movie selections, beautiful surroundings, kind and dedicated staff, cheap and tasty snacks made fresh, and a customer base with a real love for the place. These things combine to make the Mahoning Drive-in Theater a little slice of heaven on earth.

Katrina VanTassel

Our favorite drive in. The staff here is fantastic!!

Rusty Brown

We look forward to the summer only because we get to go to the mahoning drive in!! Best place on earth.. Good movies..good people.. Good times!!

Brian Mularski

Love this place. Just found it this season and have been there twice and plan on going back soon. I am always looking for theaters consistently showing great old movies, and this one is a DRIVE IN. Even better. Long time movie fan, and can easily say The Mahoning is my favorite move watching experience. People are amazing, after only being there twice I already see familiar faces and feel right at home.

Dana Lynn

My favorite drive in!! If you are all about nostalgia and seeing awesome classic movies and camping out this is THE spot!

Spencer cline

Great old school drive in theatre! You can even stay overnight with a tent or rv for only ten dollars. They show a variety of different movies old classic sci-fi horror, and everything in between well worth the two hour drive from jersey

Planet Carl

I had a great time they really make it an event. I will defiantly be back. Admission price and food prices were affordable. The staff was great made me feel welcome.

Lauren Kyle

Nun Ya

Absolutely awesome place !!!!

Tina Deiter

This is a vintage theatre. Plays older movie classics. People were so easy going and friendly. The people working there are all volunteers..... Hell..a large popcorn is $4 and you get free refills. Staff is fun and you can even camp overnight there. Thus week they did the Gremlins 1 & 2. They had the man who played Billy(lead role) there to take pictures and to sign autographs. I highly recommend this place!

Matt S

Need more theaters and vibes like this spot. If there was more of these there would be world peace. Bad a$$ place. Vegan friendly too.

J. A. White

I love this place so much! There are other drive-ins nearby but none with the same nostalgic feels. They're the only ones playing retro films, doing themed weekends, showing vintage snack bar ads and vintage previews. It's a whole experience! Long drive for me, but so worth it. I'm planning to camp out this year.

Rick Horner

Saw the Indiana Jones Trilogy and they made it so, so fun. Intermission reels and a Costume Contest! And a photo ok! AND we got to go into the protectionist booth!!! Love

Corey Pace

WHY DOES IT SAY ITS CLOSED?!!? This place is DEFFIENTLY OPEN!!! All original 35mm reel to reel retro films, Great admission price, inexpensive food and refreshments. New friendly, film loving management staff.

Pirate Boy

The only thing that makes Pennsyltucky worth visiting.

Mike Benard

Amazing nostalgia, I wish I lived closer. We need more gems like this place, I drive from Massachusetts for the VHS Fest the have and it is well worth it in my opinion.

the LVAC

Great ambiance, great movies. Couldn’t recommend enough!

Brian Welch

Godzillapalooza!!! Love this place, great movies, great atmosphere and awesome staff.

Sabrina Walley

Summary: Great Place for the Right Price Pro: Cheap tickets and food, friendly employees and people, themed eating area. Con: Older adults can be smoking in the back for weary parents. Not all that noticeable though. Review: I went here about a month ago for their 4th of July promo event and I loved every minute of it. The best part about this drive-in compared to others is you can stay the night if you bring your own camping tent/mobile home. It costs extra ($10/vehicle) but the ability to watch all the movies (2 or 3 for $10, what a steal!), buy cheap food, see a breath taking sunset (seriously, everyone stops and takes photos), and relax makes it a great deal to me. The employees are wonderful. They are friendly, helpful and theme the food area with props from the movies playing that night. I'd definitely check out this place if you're in the Poconos/Jim Thorpe area. Tip: If you're new to the drive in theater, make sure you bring your own radio or plan to have your car on to listen to the movies. You can only hear the movie if you have access to FM radio. and bug spray, don't forget the bug spray...

David Cooper

Nice drive in. Old school feel.

Dominick Jenkins

This is my favorite drive-in theater they really great taste in movies and they are really friendly there

Thomas Krutsick

We paid for 2 movies and they only showed one for no reason. The second the movie began they were closed and offered no restitutions.

Mel Gallagher

Retro drive-in with camping option. Loved it!

Omar Delgado

Even though the weather was not the best, had a great time.

Jamie DeRewal

Great time at Vampyrty tonight! Lost Boys and Fright Night in 35mm.

malsatego

Awesome experience. Vintage drive in with retro theme. Only downside. Bring a radio.

Emily Singh

The entrance was a little hard to find at night, trust your GPS, its there! Cheap and delicious food and a wonderful atmosphere, do not miss out on this gem from the past! The screen is in good condition and they show a wonderful selections of film. Old records, cassettes, and DVDs are for sale in the concession building.

phase variance2

I've been going here for over 25 years. It's a real 'old time' drive in. The food is great!. The only downside is they do not have a new digital projector and can only show old movies.

Barry Wentz

Interesting theme weekends. Great camping experience. Reasonable food prices. Don't forget your bug repellent.

Krissy Klinger

Nice throw-back to the drive-ins of old. Snack bar is well-stocked with many food items and lots of other "goodies". They play mostly older movies and offer overnight camping as well. Took our dogs and would recommend to other dog owners with well-behaved dogs (no one likes a dog barking throughout the movie :) ).

Marc Konchinsky

It's like taking a step back in time... Retro 35mm movies, complete with blips and pops in the audio & video (this is real film, after all.) Ticket prices are currently $10 per adults, $7 for children. They do offer overnight camping for $10 per vehicle. Audio is broadcast over FM. Bring a portable battery powered radio to save your vehicle's battery. The bathrooms have *never* been renovated. The men's room has two toilets, three *open* urinals and a single sink. The roll of paper towels is opposite the sink and sits on top of the hot water heater, which is strange, since the bathroom sink only puts out cold water. Concessions food items are quick and easy -- a glass hot box with sliding lids has ready-to-go hot dogs, corn dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken nuggets, french fries, tater tots, onion rings, etc. They also have popcorn. Cold drinks are in cans or bottles, including unusual selections (for a drive-in) such as Yoo-hoo. There is a table set up with ketchup, mustard, buffalo wing sauce, sliced pickles and diced onions. Nice napkins. Styrofoam trays to help you carry stuff back to your vehicle. I didn't see barbecue or honey-mustard sauce for the nuggets but maybe they have that behind the counter. I paid for our food with cash, but the friendly cashier used a Square register to add it up, so I am assuming that they accept credit cards. They have a collection of VHS, DVD and vinyl albums, as well as past movie weekend posters, all available for sale. You pay for these at the concessions stand. If you camp overnight, they allow access to the bathrooms, but lock the concessions. There is an employee that stays overnight on site in an old RV parked right next to the concessions stand/bathroom building. There is a note to knock in case of emergency, but also lists what qualifies as an emergency. ;) My girlfriend and I have been to the drive-in twice and camped out both times. It's a fun time.... They *do not* have shower facilities.

Loah Say

This place is amazing and well worth the drive to get here. It has a very friendly hippie vibe, and its great for fandoms. The food is very reasonably priced, and the staff go the extra mile to make your night come to life. They offer over night camping on thw ground in case you feel the movie ends to late for one to drive home.

Catherine Wacha

Great prices and they are showing movies you don't get to see in the theater. The events they hold are top notch and for $10 a car you can camp there. The food is simple, tasty and affordable. The entire staff goes above and beyond to make sure every theater goer has the best possible experience. We drive 2 hours to go there and know other people who travel over 12 hours to support this theater. Do yourself a favor and go check it out!

Amy Friday

Old school drive in. They dont have the digital upgrade but play lots of classic films. Laid back and family friendly.

Joey Bradley

The perfect place to spend the afternoon/night. Great prices ($2 for popcorn!) and an atmosphere unmatched. The owners really do love drive in theaters and it shows. I would recommend to absolutely anyone.

Joseph Nester

Great staff, concessions are great including the "mystery burger" each week

Doug Kendall

The Mahoning Drive In is like no where else on earth. My summer time hang out. With great movies, great friends, and the best crew of people you could ever meet. Do yourself a favor. Get out of your house and come on down to the drive in for a great night

Ruby Whiteman

Love it, well be going again

Leah Claypoole

Went here for the first time tonight for a date. It was awesome. Will definitely be coming again.

Emily Swanson

Best place on earth! Vintage style!

False Hope

Always excellent!!!

Barry Heckman

This is a classic drive-in movie theater and I have to say I have a lot of respect for the nice people who own and operate it.

Kiralyn Foss

Great experience, and the events run rain or shine! All of the people working it were friendly and helpful, and it was wonderful seeing some classics on 35mm film. It was an extremely reasonable price. I definitely suggest coming in a larger car than a sedan if you plan on staying overnight, it got a little cramped after being in there for the two movies of the night. Most of all, for the rows not immediately in front of the screen they allow tents and canopies, I'll be looking forward to packing and properly staying overnight my next visit.

Michael Blackcrest

Great old school drive in. Shows not the main line movies. Great place for a family outing or a date.
