REVIEWS OF Hollywood Theatre IN Oregon

Beautiful architecture and great viewing experience. Would recommend this theater to movie-loving hipsters from Portland.

Alana, John Crooks

We saw Hateful Eight in 70mm and more recently, the re-release of 2001 A Space Odyssey. This is a nice old historic theater run by folks passionate about film. You will meet a lot of people here that really love movies and are looking for an experience that's different from the big theater chains. Grab a beer at concessions and enjoy

Danielle Witt

Absolutely go to B-movie Bingo. You will regret not going. Its an amazing amount of fun. But be warned: it is interacive. Stay away if your an old curmudgeon who doesnt like people talking during a movie.

L. Triangles

One of the best theaters in town. Always a positive experience.

Duane Aragon

Great old time theater with a modern twist. Staff is helpful and friendly and you can get the usual soda, candy and popcorn. Additionally, they offer craft beer and pizza if you're up for something more filling. The seating is modern and some seating isles have a long, raised table to set your goodies, along with the standard seat cup holders. Lines for treats can get long on weekends, but the staff is fast enough to keep it going at a fair clip. All in all, a great time to be had with more charm and character than average theater fair.

Ellie Brown

One of my fav places in Portland! Beautiful but comfortable, friendly staff, awesome films and events.

Jason Miller

Ol fashioned theatre keeping movie magic alive and well!! Non profit in conjunction with the prolific, imitable MOVIE MADNESS... Pizza, wine, beer, kombucha... Kung Fu, Mondo Trasho, first runs, queer cinema. What more do you need?

B Carnage

Best movie theater in Portland. A classic wonderful building.

Bröck Powell

Classic theater experience. Super good prices on theater treats and popcorn. Pizza is available from the next door pizza place. Staff is friendly and helpful. The movie I watched was incredibly loud. Watch your ears. Sound quality was incredible and movies on 70 mm film are amazing.

Willow D'Arcy

Hollywood Theater is the go to theater for cult classics shown in 70mm, indie films and film festivals. You can get beer and pizza as well as your usual popcorn and soda. The sound and picture is excellent. It's a nonprofit too! Plus it's got that historical theater feel. And reasonably priced. I'd rather go here than a big box theater any day.

Trash People

This theater is hella old, so keep that in mind.. but their seats are very comfortable. Besides that.. this place is an amazing treat. Sort of my home away from home. You can see so many classic movies here.. without the Hollywood Theater, I would have never gotten the chance to see so many great films in the theater. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Daniel Ribeiro

The Hollywood theater is by far the best movie theater in Portland and one of the finest cinema arts preservation programs in the country. Their dedication to film is unparalleled, bringing every genre, every style to their massive screen and sharing their love and passion with film goers of all ages.

Patt Dolan

We love this cinema. Very historic and a lot of fun!

Steven Rebischke

Great place to see a picture show!

Brian Smith

Saw Once Upon A Time In Hollywood on 35mm, and it was amazing!

Jonathan D.

Great pricing for movies food and drinks. Great popcorn. Excellent diverse choice of movies. Seating is comfy and truly a Portland experience. Lunch and dinner options nearby are great and the freeway access makes it easy to get in n out

Quinn Hansen

A Gem in Portland. I love going there for the HP Lovecraft festival in Octobers and seeing movies in 70MM over the year. I also love seeing special movies like the Shape of Water, which I would rather see with the Hollywood theater audience than other theaters who would not understand deep films. I saw the Green Room Oregon premier there and the great owner of the theater gave me and a friend a Green Room T shirt.

Tyler Smith

A must visit. Great place for a date or any film buff. Or both.

Marti Holder

Love the film's they show. Old movie houses renovated are great

Hugh Smith

The upstairs theaters are in desperate need of oiling. At least half of the chairs violently creak at the slightest movement. I love the theater but the ear-splitting creaking is enough to ruin a movie, so I avoid Hollywood Theatre unless it's a special event or I know the movie is playing downstairs.

Whitney Chase

Really wonderful classic historic theater. Great prices in concessions and tickets. You can even get pizza!

Laura Perry

Great place to catch mainstream and indie films. Good brew and wine selection. Seats comfy with tables for your snacks and drinks

Vanessa Nix Anthony

Cool historic theater, loads of charm.

Annabelle Rose

I loved it I went to see beetlegeuce and the seats were comfy good food and drinks I would recommend

gr hafford

Beautiful old Hollywood Theater. Landmark Theater anchoring the Hollywood area of Portland. Inside is clean. Bathrooms are clean. And popcorn is not that expensive. Theater tends to run older films and does many other types of educational programs.

Brian Kilkelly

A Portland institution. Give them your money.

reese kruse

A not for profit Theater. What's not to love. Great selection of modern and classic films. Fun place to volunteer. Events and special screenings all the time. Great selection of consesuons. I love them.

Tomma Mueller

I adore this theater. A great piece of portland history and a fun place to see a movie.

Casey Kehoe

Great atmosphere and not terribly expensive. Parking looks tricky but I walked so...

terry rusinow

Wonderful neighborhood theater to support! I'd give this theater 5 stars if the sound was better, but I find that it's slightly echo-y making it somewhat hard to hear often. They re-did the theater a few years back with all new seats and I think sound system, but I still find it difficult to hear sometimes. Good movies. One problem is that folks will arrive early and save multiple seats so finding a seat is often a problem.

Jen Pants

One of, if not the best theater in Portland. Great off beat movies and documentaries. Also shows new movies and fancy films. Great snacks too.

Victor Benavides-Montes

My favorite theatre in all of Portland. Seats are actually comfortable for an old school theatre. The biggest screen they have (on the first floor) works great for sci fi movies.

Dylan Wilbur

Just the best place to see movie in Portland. Also really good popcorn.

Andrew N

I've been going here for over 30 years, and they have only gotten better. Great eclectic selection of films, for every taste.

Stephanie Davidson

They have awesome movies screening

Jessica Murray

If you ask for extra butter they really understand!!

Patrick Coan

Spacial place, this one is. A real theatre.

Jordan Enright Schulz

It is such a cool old-fashioned theater. I saw The Biggest Little Farm here. The movie was awesome and the food and seating were great and very comfortable!

Anthony Jarrard

Awesome theater! I love watching movies in 35 and 70mm!!

Thomas Rogers

Nice big screen, need more theaters like this

Katelin Lucier

Saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood when they showed it in 35mm and I was blown away! Definitely will be coming back.

Adam Cartner

Amazing historic theater with modern equipment. Excellent first run and programmed films. Inexpensive concessions. A must visit!

Joy Perez

I LOVE this theater for playing older films

Miss Debra

So fun doing/seeing the Horror Fest here!

Jody Rothwell

Great movies, great deals

Oscar Martinez

Vintage throwback theater with a newskool twist. Dig the vibes for sure!

Michell Durrin

Classic old timey theater. Offers some wonderful unique viewing options.

LINA KING

very interesting and different restaurants but to sit where your favorite stars sat is awesome! lots of homeless though.

Ignacio Quintana

Love it! They do 70mm movie projections! Best effort ever, the best quality possible is really an experience! BTW beer is great, pizza even better and the theaters are really good. It’s just great!

Lance Miller

Always amazing. Have had the pleasure to see a few films here. Do yourself a favor and see 2001 on 70mm when you get the chance!

Dean Hanson

The Hollywood Theater is a Portland landmark, and one of the many unsung heroes in the fight to preserve classic film, and ultimately, the best possible way to experience watching films. They serve fantastic food, including the local iconic Sizzle Pie pizza, and many fantastic local libations. If you're a fan of video(as in VHS), check out their cousin, Movie Madness!

Tom Welsh

I've been coming to this place since my grandparents brought me here in the 50's. Portland has lost a lot of gorgeous old movie palaces over the years. Thank heavens the Hollywood survived and is now a vibrant, inestimable part of our cinema scene due to its not-for-profit status. And every time I go there, I enjoy it both for what it is and for what it was in my childhood memories.

John Doe

Awesome selection! They always have first time premieres and also curate 70mm showings. The only thing they could use is a cocktail bar!

William Sanborn

Awesome venue, super comfy seats!

Brenda Gunther

Excellent food and drink choices along with some really good movie selections.

SCOTT EIRHART

One of the bartenders tried to drug my wife at the Portland horror film festival. Fortunately the drink she ordered was for me and it just ruined my night.

Em Black

A local legend. Love this place.

Ellie Eaton

I love Hollywood theater so damn much

Sergio Tellez Galindo

Oh I was in love with this theatre, it's so classic, really damn cheap too. Beer is 4 bucks! They have several products like beverages, popcorn, ice cream, snacks, etc. The theatre is so old school and seats are comfortable.

April Mills

I love this theater! If your looking for vintage this is your place Im glad its still open!

mitchell stephens

Movie trivia Monday is also a blast very friendly staff. Clean theater, great pricing, great selection of beers.

Frank Rodriguez

I LOVE this theater for playing older films (ex. Infra-Man) and for hosting the African Film Fest, as well as for great service, clean floor, comfortable seats and a reasonable price.

Chris King

I have lived in Portland for decades and have not been very happy with all of the changes that have been happening here. However, the changes that have happened with the Hollywood Theater since it became a nonprofit are the sorts of things that make me still love this city. The programming is innovative, the theater is comfortable, the beer excellent and the vibe is movie nerd friendly. Love this place!

Carlos Erhart

Pretty cool historic theater. Great concessions at very reasonable prices. The only downside is really the seats, which are old and not the greatest. It definitely gets pretty busy sometimes so you will want to come a bit early for sure.

John Irwin

Hollywood Theater is easily the cooles theater in the Portland area and always fun to visit. Tonight was no exception. Snacks are cheaper too. I did not bother with the Sizzle Pie pizza though from down the hall since it is always soggy crust.

David White

I absolutely love the interior paint it is so beautiful inside and it just makes you feel warm and cushioned and I want my casket to look like the inside of Hollywood theater

Eli Lynch

I like that they've finally put in new chairs. We love going here. We get to see older movies, special flicks, and independent films. They have beer and yummy things to eat. A much better theater experience than regular theaters.

Michael Hager

Love this theater and all of the history

Xela Weeks

Amazing atmosphere and super affordable concessions!

Lisa Kleck

Not digging the Ella whoever comedian.....sorry

Tracy McOrwell

What a jewel! I’m so grateful the we have such a unique and beautiful theatre that shows many films that you can’t find elsewhere. They also sponsor some cool film festivals. Always something good happening at the Hollywood!

Sarah McDevitt

Always great movies, rare, independent, foreign etc... nice microbrew selection as well as off brand local sodas. Beautiful theater inside and out!

Truen Pence

Best theatre in Portland. A good community feel. Some special 70mm events every year.

Immediate Review!

This place is great. From new releases to obscure movies from the past, this theater truly does it all. You can watch new releases in digital format, regular showings of 35mm films and they have one of the only 70mm projectors in Oregon. Plus they are next door to the best pizza place in Oregon, and you can order pizza by the slice from their lobby and take your pizza into the movie with you. They have regular star appearances and Q&A's with them, it's a very cool place to be for any film lover.

Michelle Dawson

This is a great neighborhood theater. Definitely not your Cineplex type. They focus more on art type films and indie films. The architecture and decoration are wonderful. Comfortable seating with table top area in front to put your food and drink on. Very affordable. Only handicap accessible on the lower floor, some movies you have to go up stairs to get to.

Carla Clark

Love this theater...so artistic and picturesque.

mcmullenpt

Good pizza and beer, good movie selections and relatively cheap tickets. Fun events as well.

Mo C

Love this place on so many levels. The movies, the volunteers/staff, the snacks, the ambiance the entire theater itself is a great experience. Very much the theater of a different era. Even a working pipe organ with bellows in the basement. Check this place out now f u get a chance. Always a great movie selections playing. Not the mainstream or art house norms.

Jackson Flowers

The architecture and vibe was awesome.

David Bankalachi

This theatre is one of the most fun in the city. Great movies great food laugh out loud everyone clapping kind of movie theater. Extremely fun with good beer. Don't miss 're-run theater it's a stone blast.

Olivia Gayton

Beautiful historic theater. Inside is amazing too. The theaters are some of the best in the area. We love Hollywood Theater!

Ben Johnson

What a great Portland icon and the movies they get are rare and fun most of the time but that's just my opinion. Also maybe have the employees be less rude when you talk to them. It is odd to order food and get annoyed looks and ask for confirmation of what theater your movie is in and told there is a sign over there. Of course this is Portland!

Tanner Mcmullen

Historic, gorgeous venue with a great connection to the community. Snacks, drinks, and food offerings are fairly priced and wide. Seats are older and not quite as comfortable as some modern offerings - so bring a lumbar pillow. Many classic movies to relive on a gorgeous screen in a classic format.

Sniping Zombies0

Everything is great except the sound was way to loud to a painful level

Misty Figueiredo

Love going wvwry chance i can. Best popcon in Portland, the 70mm shows are must see events as well

Exquisite Erika

Not so comfy seats, AND I'M SURE THIS FEEDBACK HAS BEEN GIVEN MANY TIMES. otherwise, great!

Celeste Navrkal

Old, historical theater...cool place. "Mandy" wasn't that great of a movie, just a lot of killing flick with no great plot. I would give a 4 out of 10. "BlacKKKlansman", on the other hand, was a great movie. I would give it a 9.5 out of 10.

Frankie Flatch

Best theater in Portland, hands down. (Though I do love Cinema 21!)

Christine Bierman

Landmaŕk neighborhood theater. Screens a variety of films. What is not to like?

Poffo Ortiz

Saw a screening of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre here tonight on the second floor theater to the left. Excellent sound quality! Probably the best version of the film I've ever seen; it was incredibly loud, visceral, and intense as hell. Truly a great experience! The sloping pattern of the seat placement makes sure that no one is ever in front of you blocking the screen. The screen is huge and the seats recline back at just the right angle. Comfortable seats and small tables in front for your food and drinks. Get there early for good seating. Been here many, many times. I love the Hollywood Theater. ;)

Carl Willis-Ford

Wonderful restored historical theater, a bit worn in spots but lovely nonetheless. I attended the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival here. If I lived in Portland, this would become a regular visiting place for me. The concession stand offers a wide array of fare, including really good pizza from Sizzle Pie. Bonus: the concession prices were reasonable!

Jake Butler

Beautiful, historic theater perfect for cinema buffs who enjoy new and classic film experiences.

Lonnie Rewa

Classic vintage theater with comfy seats. Love the antique fixtures inside and the curved ramp to the 2nd floor.

Kelly Coogan

Love this place! Great food, great movies and such a unique space! Highly recommend.

Mr. Wooden

Three thumbs up

Lesley Katherine

Great theater, beautiful inside and out. Fantastic food and drinks, at good prices. This is what a movie theater should be like.

Alex Fest

Hands down my favorite theatre in Portland. It has such a great atmosphere! It has that old theatre charm, but is very well maintained and has modernized seats, projectors and other amenities we have come to expect from the typical theatre. Plus, where else can you get a large popcorn and a pint for under $10?? That’s insane!!

Scrapping Prepper

One of my favorite theaters to go to. I frequently go there.

Benjamin Dyer

Great, classic theater. Airways an excellent selection of movies and a lot of special releases. Folks are nice, great selection of draft beer for $5, popcorn is only a few bucks. What's not to love?

Craig Chan

Reminds me of when I was a kid. Old style theater with an old school vibe

Rob Stoltz

Slowly being lovingly restored. A great venue for silent movies.

Aaron Schalock

I love the vintage films they play

Scott Stetson

Fantastic movies! Amazing atmosphere!

Anfisa Baiandurova

Breathtaking and heartstealing. Excellent movie experience ever!

Michael Doublin

Great theater. Was surprised at the concession prices too very reasonable compared to other places

Hugh H

An important institution for all film geeks in Portland. A local treasure!

scottquirico

A great vintage theater that shows classic and new movies with comfortable seats at reasonable prices. Serves real food and drinks plus theater junk food. It's everything I want in a movie theater. Looking forward to attending fun events and festivals.

Hollin Hoffman

Absolutely the best way to see a movie. Great popcorn, selection of bottled (glass is an odd choice) drinks, the Pizza Pie Hole, beer and wine. Screen is gorgeous, sounds great, seats are cozy. Typical city parking, so be ready and early.

Nicole Burch

Beautiful theater with reasonable prices. If I lived in Portland I'd be here all the time!

Andrew Plitt

This place is amazing! I've never enjoyed a theater so much. Hey have adult beverages available and kombucha on tap. The building is an experience on its own. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a place with its own character and who is not looking for the latest blockbuster experience. I intend to go back often.

Ted Boone

Absolutely best nostalgic place to watch a movie in Portland! Plus best food & beverage availability, for very reasonable prices! Additionally offers membership packages that help preserve the Hollywood area history, while offering its members special discounts & access to member viewing opportunities! And the view of exterior is even better at night, when all the lighting is on!

Adam Rothstein

My favorite indie theater in Portland. Beer and pizza at theaters is now common, but what The Hollywood brings to the table is not just indie films, but also great events and special showings, like themed films, cult classics, and special prints of rare cuts. They also do a lot of 70mm showings, if you're into that sort of thing. Their new partnership with Movie Madness shows their crucial place in providing serious film fans with their fix in Portland.

G Ramos

Great theater in the old movie house style, but upgraded. Seating is not the fancy recliner style that newer theaters have but there is a counter running along the front of each row so you can put your food or drink down. They serve pizza which comes from the pizza place next door, I think it's Sizzle Pie. My only negative is that my slice was quite stale, no sizzle at all. I think it had been sitting out for a while. As a consequence, I will probably not buy pizza there again. Other than that I do enjoy going there.

Nestor Reyes

Great historic theater. I recommend getting a subscription if you're into movies at all. They regularly show rare indie, cult classics, silent films with live pipe organ music, and special events make this more than just a basic movie theater. They also support showing in film (35mm, 70mm for example). Just make sure you show up early for the more unique showings.

Lindsay Benedict

Oh how I adore this theatre. Best programming around, excellent popcorn, local beers, comfy seats, delightful neighborhood. I can never go to a boring theatre again. Go become a member.

Mark Forster

Always enjoy going to this theatre!

Anne Wagner

Very quirky Portland theater showing first rate flicks .

Melinda Helms

Fun place but the pizza choices are weak. The historical charm help make up the difference.

Jenn Warhurst

Just an absolute amazing theater. The best place for unique showings.

John Ledbetter

I went here to see 2001: A Space Odyssey. There is a lot of seating in the main theatre, the screen is quite large possibly larger than most regular theatres. The prices for concessions are reasonable. To add to it, this place is ran by volunteers. Definitely going to sign up as a member.

Nick Marks

Cool old theatre showing both blockbusters and a variety of classics. Great prices for tickets and beer too.

Linda Skolfield

Great place to see a movie! Historic, glamorous & magical. Support our community.

Nathan Crosby

Love this place. An advocate for independent movies. A bastion for the classics. Beer. Cool classic architecture. What more could you ask for?

ebrufineart

Great community run theater

Bjorn Warloe

Another awesome evening at the best theater in PDX.

Peter Hope

Older theatre, but with so many museum like features. Really nice upstairs lounge also

John Smith

What a great place! And... food and drink are very reasonably priced :-)

Corvin Blacke

Very cool piece of Portland history with ample updated seating and sound system. A great place to see the latest Hollywood dreck or something out of the box. No matter what your style, you won't be disappointed.

Jeff Barson

There is no better theatre. Surprisingly decent eats too. PS go upstairs to get food and arrive early if you want a decent seat!!!

Scott Rokus

Excellent place in great shape. Updated seats, awesome concessions. Worth seeing any movie at. Support local businesses!

Rayce Boucher

Old school all the way.

Timothy Durant

The Hollywood Theater is a fantastic piece of Portland history and a fantastic theater. I love watching movies here. Pizza, beer and wine, kombucha, movies, and beautiful architecture.

Louis Krayer

Great classic theater

Nancy Hawver

Always diverse films and local nonprofit

Scott Standish-Parkin

I had an amazing time at this theater. It's amazing on the inside and out. The owners took great care to retro fit this place and it feels great. The movies they play are just as awesome and you can find some of the greatest on 70mm. If you want a great night in a great place, then you should definitely check then out and their schedule of movies.

Nathan Slade

Beutiful theatre, good indie films and great selection of food.

Karen Starin

Love the film noir

Erica Taylor

Great place to see new and old movies. Great pizza and beer. Absolutely love the vibe here.

McKinley Allen

Been going here for years, both for school field trips and independently, awesome staff & awesome seats. I came back from college recently and saw Godzilla here and enjoyed some cheap Cider! 4$

Jason T. Williams

If you love movies you need to at least see one here, the most historic theater in Portland, the venue is beautiful and the staff is super friendly and helpful and the ticket prices can't be beat!

Keegz Alberts

This is the best movie theatre ever! So many cool things about it!

Andrew Engert

The best place to currently watch a movie in Portland.

Fran Leventhal

Great popcorn. It would be hard for my husband to get upstairs since he uses a Walker that made me sad

tIMothy Francis Zucchero

Everything about this place is amazing! Fair prices, amazing films. I've seen some of my favorite movies here. Good rotating beer, yummy pizza, comfy seats, and superb equipment. I'm proud to be a member.

D. Wendal Attig

This classic theater may be the reason this area of Portland Oregon is called the historic "Hollywood District". The building is unbelievable. From the overall architecture to the intricate, sculpted facade with it's equally detailed, paint scheme, it is breathtaking and a must see if you visit Portland. Unfortunately I was not there at a time when the interior was accessible, but the upcoming attraction billboards looked like a combination of films and live performances. This theater is clearly a reflection of "The Arts" in every way.

Amy G

One of my favorite spots in Portland for movies.

Daniel Anderson

I don't write reviews and find the star rating system woefully inadequate of it's existence. However, after watching Quentin Tarantino's "Once upon a time ... In Hollywood", I am compelled to do just that. This theater is a movie lovers den. I imagine many people might have reasons to see movies elsewhere but, for a true film experience with fellow cinephiles, the difference between a reason and an excuse doesn't cut the mustard. Spend one opening weekend of a Director you love here and you'll be back for more.

Joseph Hucks

Awesome classic theater, awesome venue for the annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival.

James Schumacher

The best for classic, retro, and new with showings in digital, 35mm and 70mm. Samurai cinema, grindhouse, b-movie bingo, retro and contemporary. Pizza and beer. Only thing that sucks is the parking.

Deanna Uutela

The best and oldest theater in town.

Justin Booth

A serious treasure to the Portland community. I'm a big movie buff and these days it is hard to find a theater that is about movies, not just big blockbusters and selling you junk food at a huge mark-up. The Hollywood is a classy venue and they do a great job fostering a community people who just love film.

Kitty Galore

Went to the Eco Film Festival. Unfortunately a movie we really wanted to see was at 9pm and a little late for us. The seats agree comfortable and the movies we did see were good. The only thing I would improve is that when you order pizza and get a token there should be a comment by the staff is a sign in the lobby explaining what to do.

Michelle Burris

Best theater in Portland, hands down. Terrific popcorn, local craft beer, and Sizzle Pie pizza.

Joe Bothe

Hands down my favorite theater in town!!

Vanessa Rivera

A beautiful piece of Portland history with pizza and booze! You can't go wrong!
