a good place for an inexpensive fun date
Wunderful birthday party there ! This is a great place to go,for a movie, or the games,or both. The prices are great, they have discount days for both. And we love the dark ride, which also has a discount day. We go here a lot,ha. We watch almost all the movies there. And a great tip, join the club, and you get free admission and game play for your family every couple months,it is a great offer.
Cheap games and movies polite & staff
The 3rd Thursday of every month the feature movie being shown when the theatre is opening in the morning is $5. That was at 10:30am
Wonderful theatre always has a great selection of films and amazing all around energy!
Best buy for the $ They should serve beer & pizza since snobby Laurelhurst got greedy. Should have separate lines for movie v. arcade folk. Super salty popcorn. Theater is old and not the cleanest. Staff are friendly for the most part.
I recommend everyone go visit
All the claw machines are out of order
This place is a staple Portland location gotta make sure you visit
Extremely unique place to come to. The surrounding area has this old vintage vibe (including this place as well). Hope to come again soon.
Beautiful space, great accoustics
So much fun to play arcade games and only a couple nickels per game.
Great place for the family to enjoy some quality time together. It's a low budget type of place. Look to pay an entry fee though.
Next door at 5614 Connecticut Ave. #291 NW Washington, DC 20015 Is J Allen and Andrea Mason Designers from Perceptions Interiors LLC This are 2 crooked persons who likes to scam many contractors be careful, they hire contractors and don't pay them, some how they have master a very sneaky way to kick them out of the jobs when the contractors are 99 percent completed, If you don't want to have a big problem with any unhappy mad contractor do not hire this professional thief.... I am speechless about how bad is this lady.. They also do a lot of bad business in West Chester PA and Philadelphia...
Family fun, arcade and movie. Great to have the kids occupied for several hours.
Always check their listings every week. If I decide to see a movie in theater, it's the place to go; admission, popcorn and drink, all under $10.
Cheap! Great service and not too crowded. Spent well over two hours playing ganes amd couldn't finish 10 bucks
Good family fun for a great cheap price.
Great movie theater to see interesting and perhaps not mainstream movies
Ok so this place is the best! They have fun games, good prizes ez tickets and much more!! At my birthday party everyone had fun! Including me and the games are less expensive whilst with big Als it can be over $1 for one single game so go here for movies, games and guaranteed fun! Also great birthdays! I give 5 stars and I recommend this place!
This place is a bargain for 2nd run movies and arcade games with the kids. Love the air hockey and skee ball, earn those tickets to redeem for silly trinkets. Service is good, whenever we've had a malfunction with the games we got refund and extra tickets.
I Absolutely & emphatically love love & recommend trying their dark ride. Create a memory thats surely unregrettable!!! "EXPERIENCE THE DARK RIDE" it's a virtual reality ride that lasts about 5-7 minutes it is soo outrageously FUN extremely addictive [if you have a problem with seizures or adrenaline than you shouldn't] it is an experience you will love a part of Portland I recommend 110%
Love to take the kiddos here and they love it too. Great cheap entertainment
Very cool old movie theater that operates as a non profit. The movies shown seem to be a lot more diverse than the regular Hollywood and Marvel stuff that's everywhere now.
Nice vintage theater. I hear they tend to run more "artsy" films. Wierd bathroom rules about movie patrons using the bathroom in a cage that is attached to the theater
Love it! Its supposed to be a nickel arcade but its not
Great to bring your kids here. In the beginning there is a small entrance fee if you are going to use the arcade. To see a movie it is totally worth it. Gave it 4 stars because as a new person in there I felt a little lost and packed in the beginning but once I was watching a movie it was nice, calm, and relaxing.
Cheap way to see Marvel's End Game with my son. It was a very small screen and we could hear the movie next door - but, hey, it was still a great deal!
Lots of fun
Avalon offers old and new nickel arcade games and a discount theater. You pre load a card with money to pay the nickel games (ranging from 1-5 nickels to play) and tickets are counted on your card to spend at the prize counter when you are done. You can re-load your game card to keep playing at a self service station or the front desk. They also serve snacks at the counter that you can enjoy at a table, though food is not allowed in the arcade. I did not see a movie while there, but the games were quite fun.
So much fun for all ages in a safe feeling environment for families or dating.
Love this theater I take my senior client out to the movies often just to keep her in the loop of things ,nice location nice people
Kind of oddly placed, small theaters and no reclining electric seats, you can reserve seats tho
Old school. Has a bar. What's not to love
This is the place to where I have the best time! I am able to visit different machines that appeal to my interests. The claw game is really fun and I have gotten better at it! The atmosphere is always pleasant. Check out the movie theater, too.
Finally not a a mega giga hyper multiplex. Good selection of movies, not you average block buster, though.
Leave anything you don't want in your pockets in your car. My son who is 12 brought in stuff he shouldn't and then asked me to put it in the car. The "Manager" tells me it's a 1 time entry, I respond is "even to put something in my car?" He said yes. I had just dropped over $40 and my kids are in here so, I don't think so." Last time I come here.
Big
I love having so many great places close to my house! We had my son’s birthday party here.
Fun, fun, fun for all ages! Movies too! Great Sunday
An old-timey main theatre with true character and friendly staff. The Avalon shows indie and international films and is a local gem!
Doesn't have all the extras of new theaters. But a nice visit to the past. Good selection of movies. Plenty of nice eateries within two blocks. Nice part of town.
the perfect ambiance for classic movies
The staff is not helpful and just stand there talking to each other and laughing, the games are okay but a waste of money I ended up spending $60 and to me it wasn't worth it
Sticky floor. Gummy seats.
Arcade is a fun engaging place to take the family. They are often upgrading games. And have a large selection. The movie theaters are small. But they host special showings and film festivals. It is old and a but run down, but it's been there for a long time and their prices are competitive.
Great Old School theater with a Nickel Arcade. Best place to bring young children for an afternoon of cheap fun.
I am actually an employee here and Yes we have A.C. we are wheelchair accessible. Most of the staff are very friendly. You're almost guaranteed to have a good time in our game rooms and movie theaters.
Nice revival house that served wine, beer and deserts. The manager was a very pleasant and knowledge fellow.
Wine and ice cream! What more could you want? Oh, a nonprofit, locally run, independent theatre? Score!
I have visited the Avalon Theater for nigh on eighteen years now. It has always been a pleasant experience. From playing video games like Gantlet, Space Travel and driving fun cars and water boats, a nice adventurous challenge! Now my niece and nephew enjoy playing the video games and love finding delightful surprises. I always like to escape and see a good movie in the theater that is so down home and comfortable. Kind of human size, or should I say forest people size? Well, the pod is safe now we may hopefully heal the world for the hummingbirds of benevolent love.
Clean, friendly, good coffee
Lovely little community owned theater. Definitely worth the trek out to Chevy Chase.
This place brought the kid out of me. It's super fun and cheap. It's a fun place to play some games or have a fun date night.
Fun for everyone
Love the cheap movies and the small theaters and that it's kid friendly. It really sucks that u have to pay double admission though if u want to play games after watching a movie
Much nicer since the remodel....clean carpeting & good lighting.
Got such friendly service ❤
This place wack, dad took me here so I'm grateful of that.
Great price! Cozy little theatre to watch movies if you missed them in the first-run theatres. The sound is loud enough to hear but not too loud like most theatres, which I vastly appreciate due to my hearing sensitivity. I pretty much refuse to watch movies anywhere else.
Very fun, early morning movies can include breakfast treats. Close to bus and metro. Good variety of art and current run films.
Great local theatre
Love this place great for family fun on a cool winter day or escaping the summer heat
Lovely theater with great concessions
This is fine
my family and I love this place. been around for many years and hope they're around many more years!
This place is a gem! Second run movies, and a ton of arcade games...most of which are only $.05 to play. We spent around $20 for a few hours of fun. The only downside is the parking. There is no lot so you have to find street parking, which is nearly impossible.
Nice place
Loved this old restored theatre, lots of atmosphere and a great place to watch an independent film.
It's a good place to bring your kids, unfortunately I didn't have the chance to bring mine
PLEASE don't ever shut down.. we love you
Glad we saved this wonderful movie theater from destruction.
This movie theatre shows movies that you would not see anywhere else. There is a nice caffe in the lobby, however the auditorium is old, dumpy and smelly. It needs remodeling.
Great neighborhood cinema. 3rd Thursday morning for senior (sometimes with closed caption), a foreign film every Wednesday evening and top movies all the time. Love my neighborhood cinema.
Surprising and roomy. Decent sound
Old time theater playing independent films. Hope it lasts.
I like this theater it's nice
A gem in the neighborhood. Please do become a member.
A fun place to go, especially with a significant other or friends. After a few visits it can get repetitive, so it's best to avoid going too often. An interesting selection of prizes, including a PS4 (Can't remember ticket cost but I do remember being surprised). An interesting VR-esque experience is also available inside as well, for a small additional fee.
Incredibly fun place for everyone. Great atmosphere of nostalgia, and modern hang out.
Well selected films. Renovated historic theater built in the early 1920's. More renovations will be made by the end of 2019 which will make an enjoyable location to watch good films that much better.
Freaking awesome arcade. So maybe not all the machines give you tickets...oh well. I think that's just a part of the charm. I love this place.
The games were fun and there was never an issue
Absolutely love this place. Everytime.
Love this historic movie house. They have shakes.
One of my favorite places to see movies in dc. An old theatre saved by the neighborhood :)
A pleasant community supported movie theater.
#datenight
One of my favorite and most cheap date nights out!! Great establishment and prices are fair! Games and movies! Great slurpies
Old school movie theater. Ticket prices very good. Popcorn was great.
Love this place! Very reasonably priced movie admission and concessions! My son also loves the arcade which I feel is also very reasonably priced. They also send great coupons in the mail and e-mail if you sign up! Great for birthday parties too.
Friendly, historically significant theater that is a vibrant part of the Chevy Chase/Connecticut Ave neighborhood. Parking is an issue.
It was great. Took 5 grandkids and 2 adults and it cost me $12.00 then I bought child combo which consisted of popcorn, drink, small candy snack plus I lg.candy and that came to $15.00. It was great. Rather spend that kind of money instead of what I pay at the bigger theaters. If only the seats were as nice, but oh well not that bad. Great evening.
Great place! Movie ticket were a great deal. 4 bucks each.
We went for the arcade and it was rly fun but not a lot of classic games or pinball variety
My 5yo son had a blast!
Love wunderland. Staff at Milwaukee location is night and day better than this one.
The Avalon Theater is a very intimate venue and the acoustics are very good. Every seat in the venue is a comfortable seat like soft and The staff, the venue, and the acoustics are all excellent.
Quaint atmosphere. Real old time movie palace!
The movie was wonderful for Downton Abbey fans, the theatre lovely and comfortable but the popcorn awful
Great, inexpensive place to see movies for a fun afternoon with the family!
Great inexpensive fun to get the kids out of the house. Or grownups to have some fun as well. I highly recommend spring for the star attraction 3D game at least once. The more people playing with you the better but still fun with just a couple players. My coworker is addicted to the game and always wants to go. Lol great night of fun.
I went to this theater regularly 60 years ago and it's pleasing that it's still much the same although they walled off the balcony to make offices. The balcony was great for dates. Sadly, even nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
My experience was pretty good. However, it was extremely packed and it was hard to find machines to play. Also impossible to get drinks or get prizes due to so many people.
We had a lot of fun at the nickel arcade. More kids then adults and it could use more games.
Do the 3D ride. It's super fun. All the games are cheap to play. The only downside? There's nearly no classic arcade games. I can't remember seeing a Mortal Kombar or Street Fighter cabinet there. There were no pinball tables that I saw. Lots of ticket vending games and enlarged mobile games. $15 per person was actually too much for 4 adults... We were bored halfway through. The 3D ride was awesome though. I'd come back just for that. It's way more fun than the rest of the attractions combined.
Old style movie theater with some great movies and attactions
Tons of games! a very retro place to hang out!! The prices for concessions are inexpensive.
Iconic Northwest DC theater showing some wide release but mostly independent films.
Connected to Wunderland! Great add on for great entertainment
Always fresh warm popcorn! Never stale like other old cool theaters. Service always above and beyond. They offered to bring my popcorn in to me when done popping extra fresh batch I asked them for! Great sound and view on screen. CrAzY cheap price on admission, very affordable popcorn and candy!
Been going here since 2000! Love this place! Prices are still cheap. Food prices are a little spendy
Historic theater with a mix of blockbuster and art house films
Great place for family fun!
I'm usually a big fan of this place but the last time I was there they had a movie playing in the theater next to the one I was in. The music, dialog and special effects were so loud I could barely hear my movie. They should either stagger movie times or insulate the walls better.
Independent, cheap, good movies
A very fun arcade. For $10 anyone can have a great time playing 5 cent games here. I loved it so much I came back another time and had an amazing time. The staff are nice as well. The prizes here are very cool and the games at this arcade aren't as rigged as other places.
Cool place to watch obscur movies.
I went to the arcade center when I visited Avalon theater. I haven't seen a movie there. The arcade center is awesome. Two separate rooms with a lot of games to play! I love going at night when there's barely anyone there save for a few other adults.
Traditional local movie theater. Old and beautiful place.
Great place to watch movies on a tight budget!
Great second run movies with arcade inside. Quintessential SE PDX vibe. Spend awhile staring at everything on the walls and just happily absorb.
Good theatre with reasonable rates and the staff service is Good.
Cool place, some games out of order, but we had a good time.
Pretty nice! It was the Wunderland arcade inside and so were the theaters!
Great theater. Good film selection. Inefficient staff.
Small and not sound proof but cheep and charming.
Such a fun place to take kids. Fun for the whole family!
Neat spot, good prices for a movie, although our theater door kept opening throughout the movie and people would pop in at the back where we were sitting.
Beautiful cinema, I hope it will manage to stay open for a long time.
Opened in 1923. Nice large screen. Avoid the two smaller theatres if you are looking for larger screens.
Great game a cheap movies. Great for a date. Get them playing with a joystick ;) ;)
Beautiful old theater, nicely restored, showing independent films. Cafe with iced coffee, milkshakes and ice cream. A very nice night out!
The theatre visited was small but intimate. The staff was helpful and friendly. Video and sound were all good
I like the big screen and sound system.
This place is a classic. The prices are fair. The games are entertaining. Also they are cheap. Some snacks and drinks. Great employees always try their best in face of numerous children. Great way to have fun!
Amazing people, amazing prices, amazing ambient atmosphere
Cool restored historic theatre - now art/ indie movie house. Good food & drinks too.
Loved Avalon theater and the arcade. My daughter lost her card and one staff found it!! The ladies were so helpful and kind to me and my kids when redeeming our arcade cards. I love Wunderland Avalon (Better than Gresham). They made our family night great!! The movie theater is small, but comforting. Only wish they have more options on candy. They ran out of sour patch kids. Parking can be tough on the street. But still a good time!!
This place has a super fun arcade and movie theater, I would definitely come back here sometime!!
Great movie in our community-owned theatre.
Good sized auditorium and nice variety of snack options including wine and latte.
Did some repair work in the bathrooms. Owner is friendly
Family fun, but not very expensive.
The nostalgic Avalon gives us feeling of coziness and privacy to watch the best movies of month.
I love this place for the second run theaters, but they also have kettle corn and nickel games for big and little gamers. The prizes are sometimes cool too.
Super fun place to go!
We enjoy going to this movie theater, lots of character to the place.
Nickel games and a movie theater!? A great place for a cheap outing
Great games at an amazing price. Lots of kids but it's an arcade so that's expected. Played ski ball for two hours with about $7
Has very good movies. The kind of movies which are typically not shown in the suburbs.
The Avalon Theater is the oldest theater in the NW DC area. It offers first-run studio films, independent and foreign films, film festivals, a weekly Wednesday night series, and special programs for students, families, and seniors. They will rent for events my daughter had a wonderful time here at a friend birthday party. I enjoyed movies from Germany and the Czech Republic. The chairs are comfortable enough. The theater is clean and the staff is friendly welcoming. Tons of street parking
I always love going to Avalon. Cheap movies that are usually not crowded, great for tight budgets. The game rooms are a lot of fun, particularly when you're with friends. Depending on the day, they will be more crowded - its a popular place for children's parties. Being your own nickels or buy them in bags with the admission cost.
My girlfriend and I watched this movie with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings something. She liked the movie, I definitely liked the cinema - comfy seats, no popcorn all over the floor, good location (or at least for us), good prices.
A DC classic. We love it. My dream theater
Great! Nice big screen. They serve wine, beer, coffee and ice cream etc. in addition to popcorn and sodas.
We love this beautiful, old, non-profit movie theater. The cafe in front is not fancy, but is a convenient place to grab a snack before a show. Be sure to admire the painted ceiling in the larger of the two theaters on the premises.
Great great time for the kids and the games only cost $0.05 and the kids earn tokens to get prizes wheeler from out of town looking for something to do for the kids and this place rocks
Its very old but still a fun spot!
Great place for family fun. Movies available as well.

BEST CINEMA IN TOWN! The only not-for-profit in DC, great little café on the premises where you can order a latte or a white wine. A neighborhood institution playing first release and foreign movies. See you there!
They have a great deal and are my favorite arcade to frequent. Plus, they show first run movies in the same location (never been to a movie there yet). But games play on nickels, and most are 10-30 cents a play. Highly recommend.
Fun place to take the kids
Delightful neighborhood theater with friendly staff.
Always an amazing place.I teach a French cinema class and have discovered some of the best films I use for the class at Avalon. Fast ,courteous service.Wish the café offered more healthy meal choices: Salads in the Summers and warm soups in the Winter.
Went to this place years ago and I've gone back ever since it's a great place to relive your childhood and some nickel games.
We love to play and see a movie...
Saw a fantastic movie "Loving Vincent"
I liked this place a lot better before they "upgraded" all the games. Still, a fun place to bring the kids for games they can win tickets to spend at their prize counter . Easy walking to the Belmont Business district. The have movies too with reasonable ticket prices.
The 3d experience is awesome. Our family has one in Salem. It's not bad but it's super small compared to this one. We had so much fun!
This place was so cool! A bit out of the way but very happy with the experience. The staff was great.
Love this place as it changes through the years.
Been here many times. Small theater that focuses on arty flicks. Great milkshake, comfortable seats.
Friendly, vintage theater with, Indy curated films and community screenings. I love the charm of this theatre and the accessibility for watching smaller released movies in the friendship heights / chevy chase area. I refrain from 5 stars as I don't always have interest with the films they screen. I believe they have a committee so I suppose it is my own fault but I am not too invested. Definitely worth checking out.
Great price, best ac, great place to take all the family and save some money
I went there to watch the movie of van gogh, the theatre is really awesome, is perfect to this kind of movies. everyone should go to a classic theatre like this.
Today was my first time visiting this theatre. Very low priced admission. The theater it self was on the small side and very old. Not the most comfortable seats but good for the price.
A real cinema experience
A great family fun time!
Good selection of shootng games
This is one of my favorite places to take kids! They have a blast every time. They have limited food and drink options, so it's best to eat before you go. There's an entrance fee (I think it's $3.25) and $5 per child in nickles will last about 2 hours. You don't need to bring coins; you just load the money onto a swipe card. I feel it's an excellent value for a fun experience.
Great film selection and great venue, love the atmosphere here.
Affordable fun! If you like classic arcades this is the place for you! It's got several large auditorium sized rooms filled with all kinds of arcade games at reasonable prices, one of which still has a functional screen. They also have a screen away from games and loud noises for movies and they are usually discount prices on fairly new releases! $5 - $10 could potentially keep a person entertained there for hours....with the chance of prizes! Not to mention the concession, as far as I know they still serve fountain RC Cola. Never disappointing!
What a cinema should be.
I love this historical theatre. They have a diverse, interesting and not-so-mainstream selection of movies. I specially like the Wednesdays features like the French Cinematèque, Lions of Czech Films, Avalon Docs.
This is such a great spot. I have brought all kinds of company here and everyone loves it (hip people in their 20's, my older conservative religious relatives, date night, friend hangs, you name it). They play slightly older movies for cheap --the kid movies usually have a lot of kids in the audience (makes sense), but means there could be crying, food being thrown, etc. Such a fun place!
Great place for the kids. Just wish there was an easier way to find a place to sit and watch 'them' go.
The Avalon Theatre is a labor of love for those who keep it running and see it's very interesting selection of movies. It is a gorgeous old fashioned theater that is a little worn around the edges but had a friendly vibe to it because it truly is a community theatre with a nice snack place to sit with your friends and enjoy an aperitif before the show.
This theatre, like most vintage theatres in Portland is small, this particular one though calls the attention of families and young teenagers due to their game rooms and prize counter which reminded me of the ones you’d see at chuck-e cheeses; 100 tickets for a yo-yo and what not. I probably would not return just because I don’t like being around big crowds like families and teenagers, nothing wrong with this theatre I just prefer more low key settings.
This was one of my childhood staples. A grungy theater, over-buttered popcorn, dirty theater seats, sticky floors and greasy arcade games with weird prizes made for an iconic memory. So many of their dated quirks gave life to the overall ambience of it. Avalon Theatre, may you never close, and may you always entertain a creepy clown theme.
Good atmosphere and WiFi. The menu is a bit limited.
Great films. Pleasant environment. Just like the old times.
I love the Avalon, Washington's only non profit movie theater. It's cozy, like a welcoming club..only everyone is welcome, and it shows the kind of movies smart people want to see.
Great time on a rainy day. Lots of games to play, stay entertained for hours for just a few bucks. There is a bit of a wait to get sometimes in the weekends. Once you are in there is plenty of room for everyone. Plenty of multiplayer games and the kids will have a great time Everytime!
Hidden gem, family friendly, terrific prices on everything. A rockin arcade! Highly recommended! Needs better advertising to spread the word.
A really nice inviting atmosphere.
This was my neighborhood theater when I was a kid back in the 1970's. the theater was a classic theater with a sloping floor and they've destroyed that by filling it full of games and making tiny little rooms where you actually can see a movie. The arcade used to only be on the end of the building where it was formerly Dave's Funeral Parlor. now it seems the arcade business is more important to the owners than the movie experience. The popcorn is stale so don't bother buying it unless you like chewy popcorn. It's sad the way it's been run down, especially the big theater now full of electronic games and pool tables, and now you have to watch movies in rooms the size of closets. I still love the Avalon and I hope one day it is restored to its former glory. That day has not yet come.
Good theatre with good films. Was not disappointed!
Very Cheap theatre. Great to go see a second run movie. Staff is nice and if you're looking for something to do after the movie, you're already in the Nickel Arcade. Would highly recommend if anyone is looking for an affordable date night.
The arcade is fun and Soo are the movies
This place is amazing! I love the arcade and the theater is good too. There's nothing quite like a good old fashioned nickel arcade.
Most of the chairs in there where dirty and or gross looking, expect odd people to watch movies when you do, not that cheap either, staff is sub par
Fun games at a good price. Note: they no longer use nickels. They have cards that you swipe
Beautiful and cheap. The only downside is that there's nowhere to park within 3 blocks. But it's a nice place to walk.
Great neighborhood theatre with food, espresso and even wine!
Was a great movie for half the price
(Translated by Google) very good (Original) muy.buena
This place is one of my go to spots. Just watched jumanji, and on the way out the cleaner was already waiting patiently. That was a pleasant surprise considering some theaters don't always clean up after each airing. I'd give it 5 stars but the popcorn didn't taste very good my last visit.
The movies are few, the food is expensive but it is good.
Came to watch a movie. Decent sized smaller screen. Decent seatS. Tasty popcorn. Cheap tickets.
We always have a lot of fun here. Parking sucks
This is a non profit neighborhood movie theater. It is very comfortable and serves food. It is close to a post office, a supermarket, and a drugstore. The staff is friendly. The admission to price is right.
Decent small theatre. Runs slightly older movies but at bargain prices. Annoyingly you have to pay extra to play the arcade games even with a movie ticket. Also we have found the manager there to just be dreadful. The other staff are really great though. Also weird they require you to sign PIN authorized receipts which isn't necessary.
Historic, beautiful theater on Connecticut Avenue does DC proud! Excellent films, cafe' serving food and beverages, good restaurants nearby....
Great games! Huge asteroids game :) digdug Movies too.. parking limited but thats alright
It's okay have a cafe beside it
Very fun but hard to commute to
Staff was very polite, most of the games worked, and the set-up was decent. We were followed around by an older gentleman though, which is not the fault of anyone there, but was unnerving. I also wish there was more convenient parking, but seems normal for that area. Overall fine, but I prefer the Gresham location.
Very old school classic theater but the bathroom for women is small.
Wonderful historic theater, films with that something more than big blockbusters, and a charming cafe in the lobby. Seats a little uncomfortable is my only negative.
Went for my 61st birthday had blast!!!Just a great time with daughter and grandkids a whole crew everyone had a blast look forward to it again
Peacherine Ragtime Society Orchestra at the Avalon was fantastic. Classic silent movies with music provided by Peacherine was amazing.
Arthouse movie theater---we've been to many great movies here.
It's like a very classy theater. They show a limited number of movies, two or three.
Got a headache with the strong and noisy a/c blowing towards me. Too cold in there but movie excellent #The White Crow#
Nice little place
A charming place with thriving community support and lovely employees. Makes me happy to shop local!
There only a handful of games there.
Just switched over to a card system for both gameplay and ticket accumulation, so all our loose change (not just nickels) end up here. Their genetic sign board co-op Space Invaders clone is a sight to behold that would make Lady Ada proud.
Best Lattes cold or hot!
Super fun arcade ! Great games and you can win prizes
Um cinema com cara de teatro bem antigo.
This place is so much fun for the whole family. Movies are so cheap and the arcade has a wide selection of games.
Love "wonderland" and as a kid great memories. This place is $3 to enter and almost all games are 3 coins or more. Many games are out of order and frankly they have way more ticket games, than actual video games. Fun, but only mildly.
Fun and cheaper than some and Movies.
This place was a real good time and didn't break the bank.
Went in to check out a movie. Had a great time. Hardly anyone was in there so I had plenty of seat choses.
Great old American movie theater with the original large screen and beautiful painted ceiling. New comfortable seats with lots of leg room for us tall ones. Tiny restroom tho. Concessions right there including wine & beer plus a few healthy snacks and the usual popcorn and candies. Second smaller upstairs screen. It's a terrific neighborhood asset.
Love this place. I've been going here since I was a kid. Went there with my family this weekend. Still a blast.
We went and saw a cute little movie 250 a pop five bucks for both for two people with a great deal especially in 2018 hard to find that kind of pricing cute little Nickel Arcade staff was really friendly we definitely will be back and recommend it to anybody who wants to go have a good time for cheap
We love the movie selection, location and fact that it's supported by the community. We've been members for years.
FUN!! 5 cent video games. We didn't do the theater, but saw that they have one. Lots of video games, fun time.
What a quirky place! Would be a fun place to take the littles.
My niece had her birthday here and she had a blast. This place is awesome. The only thing I would say that is bad about this place is that you can't bring food in the arcade where we reserved a section for the birthday party. We were only allowed to bring a cake and nothing else. We didn't end up staying for long due to a lot of hungry children and adults but wanted to stay longer.
Cool theatre, but very cramped.
Are you kidding me? Games are purchased in terms of NICKELS not quarters - fun time for all. Good popcorn and diet pepsi, as well. Favorite game: Jurassic Park.
A lot of fun
Nice, non-profit old theatre that also hosts educational screenings for schools.
Avalon is a DC gem.
Love this theater n games been going to this theatre since I was a kid now I bring my kids every time we come to Portland!
I've been looking forward to seeing A Quiet Passion, but just learned that closed captioning is not offered...very disappointing!
We thoroughly enjoyed, "Loving Vincent", about the troubled genius. While the large theater is comfortable, more space in the Men's Room would be a wonderful thing.
Classic old theater.
Awesome classic theater that deserves everyone's patronage.
Cool spot. Retro. Super cheap and you will beat the over crowded theaters.
Great place to take a break. Movies and games with unbelievable cheep prices.
Great local movie theater.
The games need to get better but it's a fun place.
Run down could use qb upgrade.
Great place to watch plays or more movies. Snack bar was closed when I went.
Let's say you really wanted to see a movie but it's already out of the theaters, so you're discouraged, you don't really know where else to turn to to see the movie, subjected to wait til it's on Netflix. Well do not fret fellow movie watchers, for a very comfortable $4, you can see said movie at the wonderful Avalon Theatre. If you get there a bit early, no biggie, mosey down to the nickle arcade and beat your friend at skee-ball. Or check out the delicious popcorn that is not nearly as expensive as actual movie theatres. With the charm of an old 50's theatre, this place is sure to impress.
Kids had a blast in the arcade. Place was clean and staff was friendly and patient while kiddos picked out their prizes. Will definitely be returning. We went on a Monday which was also a holiday and it wasn't busy at all.
This little blast from the past has been a staple for my little family to see the big screen. It is a place you can go and buy 4 tickets and popcorn for under twenty bucks. You can also choose to get your video Nickel game fix out of the way. I have loved this place along the way.
A beautiful throw-back to a different era. As soon as you walk in the theater it feels as if you've stepped back decades into the past with beautiful vintage decor throughout the facility. The movie selections are quite limited but if they happen to be playing something you're into I would definitely give it a go.
Great service and movies even if they are independent. Great experience there!
The theater here is so cheap! Everything is so affordable i love coming here, i am yet to have a bad experience here. The staff are friendly, the place is clean, the theater is a decent size. Great place.
Fabulous old world theatre.
Great arcade inexpensive movies and a positive atmosphere
Fun place! Great price for movies!
Awesome experience and very helpful staff.
Landmark neighborhood theater nicely restored. Handicap accessible. Good movie options.
This is the best place ever! Movie theater, arcade, & VR thrill ride! So fun! Glen is also the best employee!
Reminded me of arcades from when I was a kid, so I took mine there. They had a great time. Movie theaters were ok, good place to see second run for minimal cost.
Lovely historic theater. There's a little "Cafe" attached, but it's really more of a concession stand. The downstairs theater is very large compared to most modern theaters, with comfortable seats. Ladies room is very small; it's hard to get out of the stalls when someone is coming in the door. But you're not going to be spending all of your time in the bathroom anyway, are you?
