Movie was great. No line. Reasonable price.

After moving away from the area for several years and then recently returning, I was excited to take my husband to the quaint little theater that I grew up watching movies in. It was a big disappointment. We were ‘greeted’ at the window by a fella with zero people skills. He barely uttered the price of the tickets. We went to the balcony first but decided to go sit in the main part of the auditorium. We were surprised to find trash bags covering several seats and the wainscoting coming off in large pieces. The fabric on the walls was dirty and had holes on it with no sort of attempt at repairs. My husband sat down and almost fell completely backwards - we were thankful no one sat directly behind him. We didn’t even splurge on snacks (which we had planned on) due to the lack of customer service up front. The tickets are priced great and the bathrooms were spotless, but if you’re looking for an experience, go on to Asheville or Johnson City. It broke my heart to see things falling apart. I’m all for supporting my local businesses - especially after living in a larger city for 10+ years - but when the owners don’t seem to care about the place, it makes it hard. Fabric and wood paneling aren’t expensive repairs and personality doesn’t cost a dime. I just hope by the time my daughter is big enough for her first movie I can take her where I saw mine without the fear of her falling through a chair.

A GREAT place to watch current movies, and enjoy time with family and friends.

The only theater in town. It has only one screen, from times back. It opened in 1939 and still has the same frontage. To me it's worth seeing a movie just to be in a theater 80 years old.

This is a great old theater with updated sound system and very comfortable seating. For a bit of nostalgia, try to get there early and sit in the balcony! Popcorn is made fresh, and they understand the request "extra butter"! If you want to treat yourself to a good, current movie and a dose old time movie house charm then come on up to Burnsville and watch a movie...see you there!

Loved it! Perfect small town little theater. It is well loved. Great people work there. Good sound. Big clear screen. The smell of popcorn rolls out the doors. Seats are older but rock. A perfect theater for a small town! I am glad to remains a part of the town of Burnsville.

Price to go see a movie and get drinks and snacks could not be beat, but the place was dirty enough you could tell in the dark.

Nice little theater. Glad it's around. However, never come the 1st few days of new show, very crowded and tickets sell out. Often Congested in the front at snacks and tickets, but it's a small area. All around, good theater, comfy seats, nice staff

Forever Tired

First experience for my daughter ever going to the theatre and it was not very good. She was so excited for this to be the first movie that she would ever see at the theatre and it being my Birthday it was just something that I was hoping she would never forget...a memory to last a lifetime of just her and I. The whole experience was just a disappointment and I feel like I just let her down. It was opening night for the Batman Vs Superman and thinking of how popular this movie was I figured it would be pretty crowded so we got there early by like 20 minutes or so. The first disappointment was the tickets...she had started a memory scrapbook that I had gotten her when she was born that we had just been adding to over the years and I knew this was a small town but the tickets didn't even have the movie title on it, it was just a plain "ticket" and she was like how will I know when I get older what this was to...I told her that we could take a picture in front of the theatre holding the tickets so we would know. The second was the prices for everything.. $3 for a drink( got maybe 3 sips out of it because it was nothing but ice), $6 for the tickets no matter it be a child or adult, $5 for a popcorn (stale and disgusting, must have been sitting there all day and just got re heated and handed back out). Yeah I would have had to paid a little more in gas to have went to Asheville, but everything else would have been about the same in price, not much more if so and I would have had a way better first time memory for my daughter being at the theatre her first time. She would have had a ticket that she knew what it was from, a drink that lasted more than 2 sips, and pop corn that was actually edible. I just get sad thinking about it. It's a memory that I can't take back and I can't change and it just makes my heart hurt. They also need to do something about this whole one movie a day thing and that same movie playing for an entire week. Maybe two would be nice like one movie showing during the day and then a different one that night if they are going to keep them playing for a week. Out of all the movies that play in theatres, they pick some of the worst ones that are out at the time. It would be nice if they were playing something awful that they would play something good at the same time just in case ya know I really didn't have anything better to do and did decide to attempt to go back and hope for the best the nest time around.

We have been coming to Yancey Theatre for years. We have 2 smaller children and I always carry a small Vera type bag with side pockets for our girls drinks and toys. Upon entering tonight, my girls were begging for popcorn. I bought a large bag for $5. The cashier asked if I wasn't going to buy a drink. I said I didn't need one. She then said we are required to check large bags for security reasons. I easily didn't hesitate and handed her my bag. When I opened the top and she saw my girls drinks, she said no carry in drinks were allowed and I would have to leave with them. She was really rude about it. The funny part was she never even checked the rest of my bag besides just looking at those drinks. If she was so worried about the safety for the theater, why would she not have looked into the bag. The main reason is the same reason everyone calls our family the American family. We are clean cut, cause no trouble, have very well mannered children and are always trying to find the good in everybody. We just did not buy their drinks and that upset them. We took our popcorn and our kids drinks to the car and ate it in the car. We then went back in to watch The Star. It would have been a great movie everyone's cell phones hadn't been dinging. By the way Yancey Theater FYI, upon leaving, we noticed 13 people had brought in drinks that obviously you overlooked while trying to pin us down. We saw our last movie here tonight. I just will not tolerate being treated like I was treated in that business tonight.

I personally love going to this theater! The people are always very friendly who work there. They have hands down, the best prices for tickets. One of my favorite things is that they have a balcony to watch from, and that is a nice perk! The only draw back is it is cash only, which isn't truly that big of a deal, all things considered. They may have a card machine by now but I'm used to bringing cash for them, so I don't pay attention anymore. I love this place and I'm betting you will too!

Very nice for a small town. Limited showings , but remember, it serves a small population. Nice that there is opportunity to have a small movie theater here.

Been a part of life here since 1939. Survived television, DVDs and a conversion to digital projection. One of the few movie theaters that still has a balcony, albeit a tight fit.

Rude workers, apparently somebody tried to sneak in some food so they thought it was appropriate to search my purse! The theater smells of feet, bathroom didn’t have hot water nor did they have paper towels to dry one’s hands. The theater itself was freezing, they did not have any heat. I don’t plan on visiting again any time soon. The popcorn was tasty.
