REVIEWS OF Film Forum IN New York

Attiba Syed

The variety was just not what i was expected...but still a good place for for locals

Maud Newton

Film Forum is an institution, one that continues to meet the bar it's set for itself. I've seen so many favorite movies here for the first time, and more than once the lights have come up and I've looked down the row to see Wallace Shawn in the audience. A few years ago, Laurie Anderson debuted her film, Heart of a Dog, here, at a public event in a typically small theater, and opened her own heart as she answered questions about it. I adore this place.

Taysha Diaz

Unfortunately I have not been here in over a decade. Fresh out of high school my mentor took me to see a classic film here. One of the best nights I'd ever had! Have to visit sometime soon. My mother is a huge fan of classic movies. Would love to see how the place looks now!

Colleen Ann

A NYC treasure!

Jam Yoo

Great movie theatre to see great art films from the past and present. 100% recommend!

Christopher Lyon

Great place. Great movies. One of the best things about New York City.

John Bonanni

Love the intimacy of the place and the mission: great films of high merit that you would not see anywhere else.

Sheri Shipe

Love , love this theater. Perfect for cinephiles and lovers of eclectic and foreign cinema. Good popcorn too!

Orange Betsy

This place is very precious. Plays old classics that are restored to 4K, plays new films that are often great films, they have a number if theaters, their lobby is very cool with a snack bar and ESPRESSO. There's a little machine to watch trailers with headphones and clean bathrooms and everything that makes a theater a 2nd home...and popcorn!

Jim Arendt

The film forum is one of those New York City institutions that make you realize how fortunate you are to have access to theses treasures.

Ana Laura Font Hernández

They always have great cycles and movies. Many of my first time seeing some masterpieces have been there. Amazing service too.

Gilbert Cruz

Always a good schedule of films.. They have a little cafe there for coffee, snacks etc.. Seating is a bit uncomfortable but they will be renovating this coming year.

Brian Kane

One of my favorite places to see foreign and old classics on the big screen. A real must for cinema lovers.

Alan Esner

One of the very best independent theatres in the country.

Sasha Malchik

The place to see unique films. Let's hope it will never disappear from New York, like so many other similar places have.

Alistair Prestidge

Great independent theatre. Watched reservoir dogs here. Had never seen it on the big screen before. Love this film love this cinema.

Neil Walsh

They have a 1970's film fest. Each film they chose forms part of this well curated ensemble. I am so glad that Film Forum is part of the cultural life of the city. I come here about 4 or 5 times a year and am always looking at their offerings. Film Forum is one of the reasons I love living in Manhattan. Film forum is very smart in that it doesn't only market to the Art House types, but also tries to get new, emerging, film lovers in its doors. They have lots of offerings for kids and have a good diversity of movies.

Akis Stavropoulos

Best movies of cinema history! Amazing!

Gil Obler

Wonderful venue promoting the critically important and vital independent film Movement.

B. Chandrasekaran

It's a great place for art movies. Good selection.

Bill Bickel

Interesting selection of films AUGUST 2018: Prices jumped after their renovation, AND the senior discount is gone.

Jodie Diaz

I love this movie theater had a very nice time even though we had to go high high high on the escalator but other than that it was great clean and so on

Michelle A

It's unique because it shows classic movies just like they were seen when they first came out. It even shows silent movies with a live pianist for special effects.

Don Gibson

Amazing programming. The center of movie viewing.

Jeffrey Holmes

First time there. What a great venue.

Jim Freund

Great indie movie theater showing classics, and art films, and esoterica.

Manuel Smith

My #1 proffered place to see films in the city. Always playing great stuff.

Mike T

Best place in NYC for independent and repertory cinema

Anita Bushell

My home away from home; thank God for the Film Forum. I grew up going to the Regency and Thalia revival houses and Film Forum captures the spirit of those bygone, black-and-white glory days.

Peggy OHaire

Always a great selection of films that don't come to your local commercial theatre.

Kathy Gluck

Nice place and a great film

Maria Fuentes

A very nice Soho cinema!!

Crystal McKenzie Incorporated

Great rates for seniors.

Jessi Mellenthin

I got to see one of my favorite movies and it was great to see how in demand tickets were. We did have to stand in the standby line outside to get tickets, but the staff were nice and accommodating.

GW Hoffman

The ONLY place in town to see indies and oldies. Go!

Rawson Gordon II

Serves delicious popcorn that is not swimming in chemical butter funk.

Jenna Cardinale

Film Forum is a smidge of old New York hanging on. This isn't a Times Square multiplex. The theaters and screens are small, but that's where you'll find excellent first-run independent and foreign films, as well as classics. They often include Q&A sessions or introductions by people associated with the film. The staff is friendly and they serve popcorn without fake-butter coloring and flavoring. Locals with an ID NYC can get a free membership, with which movies only cost eight bucks.

Luis Ortiz

Amazing selection of films, amazing bargains, and they're about to start some major renovations to improve seats!

Michael Rogers

Best of NYC blows away all the hipster brooklyn arthouses

Jim R. Moore

A great venue for the cinephile and film buff. Always showing great films!

Noranal Todd

I enjoyed this theater location, this is located in a little plaza where there are many shops surrounding the theater, it's great because you can walk around before your movie starts, I can't wait to comeback and watch their foreign movies! I enjoy very much !

imagede zach

This place is great. If you like films with an academic interest, this is your place. The staff is usually really cool. Free popcorn for students on Mondays is always a plus.

Colleen Flett

Good independent theater. They show movies no one else would and the prices are reasonable. The seats are rather small though. The sound is good, and so are there screens. There concession stand had a good selection of coffee drinks and baked goods.

richard dietz

Comfortable seats. Clean.

Cecil bridgewater

Miles Davis' film was fantastic!

Gerald Press

Far and away the best place if you love movies. Terrific movies: independent, foreign, classics, documentaries, and retrospectives. Fair prices with very good membership deals. Auditoriums are clean, comfortable, and the lobby is comfortable, welcoming, and full of the smell of fresh popped popcorn.

Milenia Marias

Great to watch documentary feature and movies out of mainstream

Bryan Aiello

I love this place. Usually have first run fare that will be nominated for stuff and/or influence the zeitgeist. Plus I think the dudes who run it are vampires, or the owner has taste only for the same three types of guys. Or they have to be a million-years-old and look twenty.

Pieter Sommen

Nice theater! Great movies!

sammavacaist

Another great indie movie venue in NYC. 2 complaints: the seating is a bit tighter than other theaters and the coffee is consistantly disappointing.

Céline Galliano

Wonderful place to discover or rediscover classics

Jielin Yan

Movie selection is good. I went there after the renovation, and the seats were so high that I cannot rest the entirety of my feet on the floor if I want to recline on the back. I’m 5’6” and I’m sure there are smaller people out there. It’s UNCOMFORTABLE! Edited: Ok so I went back to see the Carol Reed double feature (which, by the way, was mind-blowingly good) and took a relatively front seat in auditorium #2 (previously I went to auditorium #3). That seat was lower and comfortable.

Stephen Gomez

Indie film spot. Mostly older clientele but they show some great art documentaries.

Talha Salarzay

Great Movie Picks

Lilramo Gillead

Small theater with narrow seats. But I enjoyed the MILES DAVIS movie none the less.

Albert Gonzalez

One if my top three indie film venues with an excellent location for NJ commuters and city transit folk.

Joe Bruno

Dive of a theater..not worth the time.. all new theaters popping up all over with more comfort and cleaner.

Teri-Ann Carryl

Great programming and convenient online ticketing, since they only take cash at box office. Printed tickets get scanned at the machines near the entrance, just in front of box office. I always enjoy the selection of cakes/pies available at concessions. One of my favorite place to see movies in the city.

JP Roos

excellent small cinema theatre!

Bby Gtr

It's like a step back in time sort of .. Where you can see an " underground " gem. The conssessions are delicious ! Try the orange chocolate bundt cake ..omg !

Walid Nabhane

While they do an excellent job in bringing all these foreign movies they need to improve their theater rooms. From the screen to the sound to the seats and room...

Jasmine L

I love this place so much! Great film screenings, and comfortable seats. Plus this was the place I first went on a date with my husband haha.

Stephen -

A New York gem - the only place to see old, independent or arts movies. They regularly have seasons on famous directors e.g. Hitchcock, Truffaut, Renoir etc and I've seen some amazing movies there I'd have never thought to go and see because other cinemas only operate on a 'Big Release' basis. Community funded and just one of those magical institutions you hope stays around for ever. Great pop corn too!

Benjamin Bonte

Great small theater with awesome selection of smaller independent or foreign movies.

John Fox

Good value. Unique films

elless s

Great programming. A wonderful theater for people who love film.

Tim Meyn

Movie experience was easy and the staff were polite and helpful.

Paul Granger

Perennial favorite, with new and improved seating.

Jennifer Chenault

Delina Sosa

Great place to watch independent films

Robin Courtney

Comfortable seats..good view of screen for non basketball players...unique films...

Big Muslim

Cool spot to visit!

Hawah Pyne

So glad I got the experience the late Toni Morrison’s documentary here before she past. The setting was intimate, snack selection was great and the staff were very kind.

Kathryn Fortunato

I love this treasure of a theater. I find it hard to know what else to say about it, of course, except that it's a great spot to see everything from a classic movie to a great documentary, and a beautiful way to support the arts. Their food options are simple, but in addition to the basic popcorn and soda, they also offer a selection of teas and baked goods, which is my new favorite accompaniment to a movie.

Nick Macrae

Very cool independent theatre showing classic and indy films.

Gale Grant

A favorite theater where you don't have to pre-select your seat. Hope it will be around for many years to come

Anthony Del Grosso

I would give this place 5 stars but I always feel like the staff are a little too much to be around. They aren't really friendly. Having said that, it's a great arthouse theater with fantastic showings.

S Cruz

Going here is like having soul food. Very satisfying movie watching, fellow movie goers are very quiet and respectful and it is never get crowded.. love watching independent, documentaries and classics here.

gina t

Often Shows independent films

Wrolf Courtney

Really good indie art film house.

Santiago Gonzalez

A really great movie theater for independent films. It won't have the big blockbusters, but every time I go I get to see really thought provoking cinema. It's really nice to go and learn/enjoy new things I usually wouldn't otherwise from the films played here.

Johnny Zito

Cinephiles haven. Been going here since I was a kid. They renovated recently too. Outstanding selection of films. Awesome events. Friendly, warm, and welcoming staff. Go! It's a must. The pride of NY!

Tom Reiss

The best place to watch movies. A pearl.

Simon Fraser

A New York gem. One of the best rep cinemas in America.

Joseph Pisicchio

One of the best indie style film experiences in NYC!

Mina Abdelmlek

The office box lady was so nice and professional

Rouslan Valonen

Great place to watch the classics, foreign, and independent films. Good vibe, sophisticated audience. Theatres are rather small, with good projection and sound equipment, and comfortable seats. Sound level is reasonable, not earsplitting.

Carolyn Weddell

We love this place, especially for old French films, but beyond that: Saw a spaghetti Western today, plan to see Japanese films next week PLUS a documentary on Hitler's Hollywood. You don't get that at the local multiplex.

jerry laster

One of the best places for great cinema in New York

NoName NYC

Great films, great staff, great popcorn. Always. And egg creams...

Brenda Perez

Its a marvelous film offerings! Arrive early, and buy tickets in advance -- films can sell out, which can also make seating hard to find once you're inside.

malcolm kogut

The Film Forum is a great little place to catch independent arts films. There is usually parking somewhere on Houston if you have the patience to search.

Darren Roberts

Very nice

Khalifa Mohamed

No butter at all at this theater and very cramped spaces but great selection of movies!

Sherry Walters

Watch some Korean dramas here some times. Nice theaters. Well kept and clean. The plaza it's located has other shops and eateries. I know school food is in this plaza. One of my faves! They also have an adjoined parking structure with many levels but of parking but it takes sometime to get in and out of. Park on the street if you can find a space or uber if you don't mind paying.

Nadia Pry

Move selection is excellent, concession stand has amazing cakes, and everyone is very friendly. I ♡ Film Forum!

Kimberly Butler-Gilkeson

Wonderful cinema center. Always presenting noteworthy and interesting films or collection of common theme films. and so convenient to the 1 train!

Naz M.

Great theatre for learning through interesting film selection.

Dorothy Kellogg

Recently refurbished but still a fab little indie film space look, with really yummy popcorn

Randolph Reynolds

Great place. Great movie...great time!!

Rachel Vine

Great theater !

Constance McCord

Film Forum is a terrific place. It's friendly, laid back, and for the most part has great films. (I left my cell phone in the bathroom there once, didn't discover it until they were closed, and it was in lost and found the next day.) Most importantly, they show classics and foreign films that are hard to find elsewhere. They have good coffee! Their food is decent -- FRESH popcorn, as opposed to what we get in so many theaters with stadium seating (which, yes, is nice). John Lahr autographed my copy of his new biography of Tennessee Williams there after a screening of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof earlier this month -- I know of no better New York City experience.

Serdar Maldini

Good cinema. Went here with friends all the time. We watched all the films that were shown in 2018 and 2019. Good quality service, great sound quality. Very comfortable seats. Acceptable prices for popcorn and cola. I recommend this cinema to everyone. Also suitable for family watching movies. Come and evaluate yourself.

alex ofori

I got free popcorn from this lovely lafy

Aunree J. Houston

A treasure!

Summer Soker

Reasonable tickets - $15 and great selection of movies

Barbara van der Swaagh

I love the Film Forum. A wonderful place to watch films with other enthusiasts.

Roy Preston

Fifteen dollars to watch movies in a television screening room. Not worth the effort. Take a Path ride to Jersey City instead and go to The Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre. They only charge eight dollars, and The Landmark Loew's is an old-fashioned movie palace. They run all their films in 35mm. The screen is HUGE!

Gris CR

Amazing place to visit when you are in NYC

Jeanne Williams

I want to come more often! They have a great selection of independent movies.

S. MacDonald

Excellent movies, great concession & staff!!

fred turbee

Patricia Weinschelbaum

Loved it!

Zachary XAE

Look up what you’re going to see, they have very avant-garde independent features.

Tom Richmond

Wonderful indie theater, with great coffee and snacks too. Goid seating, sharp screens.

J J Peon

The new seats are a definite improvement. One of the best places where to go for quality films.

Kelly Laster

Excellent

Michele Valerio

One of my favorite places. Thanks for always being helpful and courteous. And thanks for showing such amazing films !

Oliver Anene

I love that it's a non profit, and gives audience to excellent films that may not be found in mainstream theatres. Affordable too! However please fix the air in the screening rooms though.

Jean Standish

The best movie theater in town with great retrospectives and independent releases.

Brandy Shea

The theatre itself is pretty neat, and they have a good selection of movies, but they definitely lack in customer service. I bought tickets for a special screening 3 months in advance, and my friends and I arrived about 30 mins early to ensure we'd get a good seat. I set down my stuff and went to the restroom, and when I got back there was tape over my seat and a nearby employee explained that they needed a seat for their special guest, and that I would have to find a different seat (despite my friends trying to save the seat for me). There was no reservation sign on the seat when I originally sat there, yet I had no choice - and the only seat left was one at the very front far end. So not only did I have to sit alone, I had a pretty terrible view of movie as well. I understand that things happen, but they should have marked the seat reserved before-hand or at least have the courtesy to apologize for the inconvenience, which they did not. Felt very rude and pretentious overall. Will not be returning.

Samuel Johnson

My favorite place on earth.

H MC

She’s happy. I saw her laughter for the first time in a very long time. Life has been tough...Things are getting better for you M. —June 12, 2019

First thing you do after arriving in New York - get a membership to Film Forum and feel your brain and soul expand exponentially. Simply the best.

Guo m

The Film Forum is a classic independent theater that shows some of the best art house, indie, and classic films. While it's one of the older and smaller theaters, it's still well kept and comfortable. I recently went to a 4k restoration for Tampopo and they partnered with Lucky Peach to create a ramen flavored popcorn!

Michael Kaplan

Movies from all over the world, great selection. One of my favorite movie theaters in New York

Howard Mandel

One of the best revival and independent theaters anywhere.

Finrod Wei

My favorite cinema in New York.(The second place comes IFC)

Jill Syslo

Thank God for Film Forum.

Nc Kane

Nice little venue. Interesting shows.

Jason Ratigan

The screens aren't so big, but the programming is great.

Charles A Mitchem

Nice renovation. One of our favorite film places. Nice concessions!

Ed Miller

People like Janik Zikovsky need to go to a multiplex in New Jersey. Film Forum is for film lovers!

Joe Delly

With Ava working the projector, it'll be a great night

John Broadbent

Saw 70's flick Mikey and Nicky here. Cool cinema, would definitely recommend

PuntaClassic Luz del Alba

Great place for a romantic date

Ava Brown

We saw Nureyev-the documentary 2x in the past week. Last time I was there was in college for Werner Herzog and they still had chairs for seats. It is a full blown la-ti-da theater now with new seats, a nice restroom, snack bar with real food and I must say the movies are the best-they even have kiddie movies on the weekends. A membership is $50 a year and then ALL films are $9. It pays in this sense to support your local non-profit theatre!

Bart Cortright

Good programming, small screens but usually a good crowd.

Harshal Alurkar

Classy arthouse theatre which lives up to its legendary status

Nanci Kane

Great indie theater. One of few left.

Chris Welty

Classic movies restored into digital fuel this movie museum. The seats are too close together and the screens are small, but it still feels like a night out with bogie and Bacall...

Dustin Wetzel

Do you want to see great films? Old & independent? Go here!

Rosa Luna

Such a cool vibe at this theater! I went for a friend’s film, but I’m definitely coming back. Everything on the rosters looked good and it really had a genuine community feel to it.

Sandra Hind

Old world movie watching experience. Recommend sitting in the front half of the theater as the screen was small, and many rows of seats.

Jan Kamil

Is it cramped, old with some questionable sight lines? Who cares!!! It's a cinema gem. There's no other theater to see the films they show. And they'll be renovating and expanding. Go and support this irreplaceable institution.

Sophia Greb

I like this cinema. It’s cozy and the films are very interesting
