This Movie Theater belongs to the category of Movie theater.
Just remodeled! You can order tickets online, popcorn is really good, get that butter layered with some m&m's! They also have current movies not just indie films which is good
Great theater. Home of the Cinetopia Film festival.
So good so cheap.
Nothing like The State Theatre...
Perhaps the less elegant cousin of the Michigan, the State is a one of a kind place where you can see not only the latest independent/foreign films but enjoy old favorites on the big screen. One of the best places in Ann Arbor! You need to buy your tickets at the window, so arrive early. Prices are much better than the big movie theaters.
I like this theatre a lot, but I reached out to them about renting a space for a private screening and they never replied. Unfortunate. Funny how RAVE replied within a day with info about space rentals.
Wonderful renovation and great movie selections. So happy that the State and Michigan are part of our community.
This is great local theatre. The movies run a mixture of quality mainstream Hollywood movies and indie films. There is also a bit of quintessential college to going to a midnight showing of some cult movie here. The theatres are comfortable and clean and everyone who works here is really nice and helpful. Really what more is needed from going to the movies?
Great popcorn. Friendly staff. Comfortable seats. What more do you need from a theatre?
Pleasant viewing experience
The renovations are great, there's really no bad seats in theater 1. But...the bathrooms are inadequate.
Nice, stylish remodel.
COMFORTABLE seats, not the "over the top" BarcaLounger type chairs that fit no one's body
Nice old timey feel
Wonderful renovation! Love it.
Nice
We saw Black Panther here about four times last year. If you're looking for an IMAX screen and lounge-chair seating, you won't appreciate the State. If you want to see movies the way they did in the golden era of movies, this and the Mich are the places to go. The State is intimate - not a big box. If you think the theater should be part of the experience, you should give the State a try.
Since its reopening, The State Theatre is my favorite movie theater to go to. With new everything, including seats, it's a comfortable and easy-going experience. They have reserved seating which makes is convenient for me to buy my ticket and pick my seats ahead of time so I don't have to worry about getting crappy seats or not being able to sit with my friends. The staff is very friendly and helpful and I could eat their popcorn for days. My husband is especially excited that they have the Nitro Stout as a beer option. Full disclosure, I work for the Michigan Theater Foundation that owns the Michigan Theater and State Theatre. But while it may appear like I'm biases, it's an honest review and I do love the new theater :D.
Staff is nice and location is clean.
It's no brand new megaplex theater, but it has impeccable taste in movies. From foreign films to their cult favorite midnight showings, you will find something that can bring you to the State Theater once a month. It's definitely your unique college town movie theater and we love it!
Loved it before, love it now post-renovations! Iconic.
Reasonably priced but seats are still cramped. Screen seemed fairly small.
Horrible experience. We had the highest priced tickets as an anniversary treat. The staff REFUSED to honor them. We arrived 5 minutes ahead of time. They made us wait in line for seat reassignment. Of course, slim pickings after waiting in line for 25 minutes after show was scheduled to begin. Reassigned seats were very undesirable, with limited view of stage and performers, small seats made for children and a 25 foot speaker tower less than 20 feet away. We lasted less than one minute of 140 db screech. Act promoted as acoustic guitar and singer, but real act was heavy metal band. We left and had a very nice dinner, although we had to shout at each other for 30 minutes until our ears recovered. Dishonest, dishonest, dishonest! We will never go there again, and encourage everyone NEVER to go there. Anyone giving a high rating for this place is a paid troll or works for the place.
Very neat place, well put together. They serve alcoholic beverages and other movie theater snacks and treats.
Newly renovated. Awesome!
A fun and clean theatre, showing many art house and limited release titles. Tickets do sell out quickly, so make sure you buy your tickets before you stop at the concession stand. We made that mistake, and ended up throwing away our popcorn because we had to wait 2 hours for the next showing. We watched The Favourite and it was a hilarious gem in a beautiful setting.
The renovation is beautiful
They serve wine and beer. Popcorn is good. they usually have the movies that aren't widely released. Seats are a little small
A great place to see great films!
Beautiful theater. Friendly staff and very clean. Decent sized screen and swanky seating. And you can get
refurbished theatre is beautiful.
Great people wow! Even better movies! WOW
There is no AC in the summer ...
I haven't been in the building since before renovation, but it was a nice space. I came with a friend in a wheelchair, so accessibility, in my eyes, seemed relatively navigational (tho my friend said there isn't a handicap door opening button, so it would be hard for a handicapped person going to the movies by themselves unless they came with friends). Chairs in the theater were very comfortable. Audio seemed fine for the movie I came to see. I would come again.
Awesome. Renovated. A+
No parking, the elevator jumped like it was going break while We were on it and the Popcorn was blah, no good seasoning. Thank GOD the movie of the series was very good!
Always a worthy experience, along with it's sister theatre The Michigan. Happy to support both with annual membership.

Always been a cool theater, even better after reno!

Comfortable seats
Always a great place to catch a picture. Renovations have made it even better!
Great theater
Nicely renovated, comfortable and accessible, good selection of movies
First class movie going experience. Intimate and friendly. 4 screens so great variety especially when paired with the 3 screens just down the street at the incredible Michigan Theater (worth the trip just to hear the classic pipe organ). An A2 gem. The AAFF in late March is a film buffs dream.
Great renovation. Love the new digs.
Super neat little theater!
The service was really great and the staff was very nice. The bathrooms were really clean. The only down side is some of the theaters are smaller and fill up quick so you need to get tickets in advance.
Love the old style and they show indie movies from time to time. We live an hour a away and drove here to see suspiria. A great time. Loved it. The distance is what keeps me away. Also like an old style theatre it doesn't have leather reclining seats. But Thats no big deal. Would recommend
Newly renovated theater. Great location and staff.
Good local theater, but could be better in terms of seating and showings. Was packed today and had to show my ticket again as proof I was in the right seat. Very irritating!
Historically well done.
Comfy seats but they don't recline.
I love the State Theater. They get a wide range of movies and the concession stand is reasonable.
Beautiful renovation
Oldschool theater, but a classic
Great staff and good atmosphere. We love the variety of movies they offer throughout the year.
Vintage place with good movie selection. The seats are really tight so tall people barely fit in non-aisle seats. Usually not as crowded as Michigan theater.
Great all around. Wednesday drink specials, unobstructed seats, great sound quality. Check out the view of downtown along Liberty St.
Great service and friendly people :)
A part of my Ann Arbor history since 1948!!
Newly renovated Art House. Great films
What a difference the recent renovations made! Almost a museum now, it's great to see the history of Film and Ann Arbor intersect inside the State. Seats are comfortable and local film fanatics will join you for an enjoyable showing. The staff is friendly and helpful, and booze selection is a plus! Consider the State for your next movie and enjoy the nearby restaurants and nightlife to complete your night
Spaceballs!! Loved the theater! I wish the screen was a bit bigger but it still looks really nice on the inside
Great night at the film festival, Meow Wolf doc is fantastic.
Did an exceptional job with the renovation on this place. Double the number of theaters than before, and more compact so you're not as far away from the screen. They serve alcohol here now, as well.
Renovations are great!
I liked it, not too bad on the refills, but it's not bad.
What's better than a historic remodeled independent theater? Keep it local, keep going to the State or Michigan Theater.
Pleasant movie experience. Parking can be an issue, so plan ahead. The theater itself is unique, but we'll maintained. Some nice art-deco touches. It's great that there is a place to see some less commercial films.
I understand the appeal of the old (perhaps original) seating, but it's uncomfortable! Otherwise an awesome theater. Great for the weekend midnight showings.
Great place to see a movie and don't forget to pick up your special issue groundcover on your way in or out for ONLY 10 dollars
Great place to see great movies
THE BEST POPCORN
Great prices. We went to one of the late night showings of an older movie. Very cool, had a lot of fun. I appreciate the atmosphere, and the experience was great.
Very nice historic theater, shows movies that are special as well as first run hits.
It's a great experience, and a nice theater. Do not go in expecting a national chain experience though. It has it's own style. Great for the whole family.
Nice re model. They serve alcohol. Small theater 3 screens. We'll be back!
Nice place to see one indie films
Super comfy, nice size
A different type of movie experience. Would definitely go back.

Especially wonderful since the renovation! Very comfortable stadium seating, excellent selection of films, plus fresh popcorn (and finally accessible with an elevator AND an escalator!)
They have liquor. Nice! Sprite and Titos!
Great place, great people, great movies!
Extremely comfortable seats after the renovations and they have a lot of new movies showing.
Spectacular . . .what a change!
I am very happy to have not one but two art house theaters in town. Other then current non-mainstream movies this theater also show anime and midnight showings of cult classics. This theater also serve beer and wine at a fair prices that pair excellent with their popcorn.
It's beautiful. Never been there. It was my first time
Beautiful and well managed.
Love their remodel updates and that they still kept a lot of retro touches. It's also nice that the theater size isn't too big so there are no "bad" seats.
Historic (1942) movie theater restored in 2017 to its Art Deco beauty! State-of-the-art technology, comfortable mezzanine including liquor license & bar along with soft drinks, popcorn etc. Four screens, very comfortable seating & good sight lines. Note that all seating is reserved. The renovation included the installation of an elevator & escalator. Within site of its historic (1928) sister, the Michigan Theater.
It has been almost a year since the State theatre was completely renovated, and it still looks great. Nice small theaters of about 130 seats each.
Still in the final stages of remodel, nice, comfortable, good Soundsystem.
They should have bathrooms on the third floor where the actual theaters are...
Where theaters go, The State is not like a modern cinema. It was made in a different era. The screen is a little smaller and farther away from the audience. The stage leading up to it pushes out into the crowd as if to remind you that this is a theater and not just a movie house. The seats are small, and the leg room is reminiscent of the back seat of a Geo Metro. Don't go to The State for a movie. Go for the atmosphere. Go for the audience and experience. Go because it's in downtown Ann Arbor. You can see a movie anywhere. If you want theater though. . . Well. You know where I'm going with this.
One of my favorite places to view films!
Much better seating post-remodel
Saw Stevie Ray Vaughan here, so many moons ago... Great intimate setting to see a live show.
Had not been here recently. Bought Tix online and sat in assigned seats without any one checking ticket. Snacks and bar, clean restroom including family/all gender
The State Theatre is a very beautiful and comfortable place to see a movie. The staff are very friendly and the food/drink offerings were a nice surprise. It's much nicer than the theaters on the edge of town where they shuffle you in and out.
Always a fun place for a show.
This place is a not-so-hidden gem!
Great space with friendly staff. They often show things that the bigger cinemas don't show like international, art house, and indie films. The theaters are a little tight, but that's only a problem if you're sitting next to a jittery popcorn muncher with bad hygiene.
A maximum of 100 seats available in the theater. Not very crowded. Would hardly notice any youngsters, mostly the crowd would include older people. Great location. Limited options for movies. Any new movie is rarely shown here.
Great place for classic movie. Regular ly it shows movies at midnight. Beautiful historical theater.
Great job on the remodel! Good place to see a movie
I've never had a bad experience at The State Theatre, before or after the renovation. I tend to favor the anime films and cult classics showings, I love the midnight showings they offer. If you participate in their membership program, you can buy alcohol with your popcorn and snacks! The seating is comfortable, there's usually plenty of space for everyone to be comfortable, even with the most popular films. I prefer going to The State Theatre because it's a movie experience you can't get anymore, really. It almost feels timely since luxury movie going has become a trend, but I feel like I enjoy my movies the most here. You still get the big screen and great audio quality, but it feels more intimate and cozy which I adore. I swear their popcorn is the best, they'll ACTUALLY put EXTRA butter on for you! That really matters! Their staff members are friendly, helpful, and pretty cool people once you start becoming a regular.
Miss the old state. However this theater dors have something to offer. First of all the seats are way more comfortable then the old seats. Also the acoustics are better. Now if only the screens were bigger. Yet again they are too small. This is too common at the Michigan. Love the subwoofer though.
Great, classic movie theater popcorn and the option for a $5 glass of wine with the movie made this place the perfect spot to watch Free Solo with my partner on Valentine's Day. I had never been here before and will definitely come back. The theater was clean, the seats were comfortable, and the tickets were easy to purchase online in advance.
comfortable seats
Concession prices are very inexpensive
Although seats are not the most comfortable, you can't beat the selection and classic feel if the theater. They also we've nice snacks, and cocktail of the day :)
Friendly staff, great move, awesome service
Decent theatre but mediocre seating
A historic theater with a contemporary twist. I love coming here to watch films that mainstream theaters pass up.
Great location, great screening room.
The renovation really turned this place around. Before you couldn't even sit in seats without your knees hitting the seats in front of you and the screens were tilted and strange. Now you have these large, plushy seats with normal screens. If you want to see new releases, this is the most convenient place to see them as a student. They should work on the frontage since it's easy to miss the doors
Good View

Agreed. If you've seen Ozarks you might be suspicious that they're laundering drug money through that place with how long it's been under construction...
Great place for classic movie. Regular ly it shows movies at midnight. Beautiful historical theater.

Good View
Such a cute theater!
Loved it! Comfy, wine and beer... Good location. Nice upgrade recently.
A classic and fine place to kill time. Centrally located.
Big fan of the late night series or director series that they run! Check out the website to see if any series are happening -- definitely cool to get the chance to see older movies back on the big screen.
Ever since the remodel, this place is even better than before. They run a lot of series with cultural organizations on campus, and those are always really amazing events. They also show indies, block busters, and foreign movies, so you're sure to find something interesting. Also you can get drinks without a membership here, so that gives it an edge over the Michigan theater for people who are put off by that.
Beautiful restoration, comfortable seats, small individual theaters gave a nice experience
Newly remodeled. Comfortable seating, good quality picture and sound. Updated, modern, clean bathrooms. Limited concessions, but should soon be getting their liquor license. Very nice experience for an old gem of a theater.
A sweet vintage type theater. Very clean, with good service.
Awesome little theater with only the best movies playing.
It's nice that there's a movie place on campus but it's overpriced for a venue with traditional seating and outdated, ambiguous decor. For a lot less dough and better parking, Caremark is close enough and has reclining leather seats, great screen and sound, along with prices that are much cheaper for a Sunday matinee. I just don't feel there is any extra value seeing a show at the State.
They have a non conventional set of movies. Staff is really friendly
Great theater, very few previews, and cheap concessions. I love the State
Cute theater.
Fantastic!!! Employees Helpful and Cordial ... Nice Film: "The Green Book"
Beautifully redone.
The midnight showings alone warrant a five star rating. No other movie theater around plays as many cult classics shown at The State.
An Ann Arbor iconic destination. Recently remodeled and showing a wide variety of movies from indie to cult classics.
Loved this theatre! Staff extremely friendly, restrooms immaculately clean! Assigned seating was a nice option to choose prior to entering theatre. (Theatre 1.) Loved the coziness. Definitely will return!
Baby I work here ya gotta love it
The other local art-house cinema. Great movies, but not very comfortable.
New-found, quirky little gem.
Oddest movie theater I've ever been inside. Small theaters with small chairs with small screens. Even though all of the reviews here mention a remodel it was the most outdated theater I've ever been in. Concessions were extremely limited and the bathrooms weren't even on the same level as our theater. It's very cute on the outside but I'll never return to see a movie there.
Great time
Nostalgic theatre
Great small theater.
Acceptable.
Great local theater!
Great time, great atmosphere.
This theater was a close to 2000 seat landmark until the company running it quit. The ground level (main floor) became retail shops, and balcony was split down the middle to make 2 theaters. When the Michigan Theater became a nonprofit, they were able to run the State Theatre. After some major renovations, in late 2017, State reopened as 4 smaller screening rooms. Comfy seating, improved sound, online seat reservations possible, better concessions, and a film experience for the 21st century.
They remodeled the theatre, and the inside is no longer the classical theatre kind of feeling. Tickets and concessions are overpriced
saw a lot of foreign films there which my aunt introduced me to
Gorgeous! I love the intimate theaters - literally not a bad seat in the house. I found my new favorite movie house!
Nice theater. However, they double-charged my friends credit card.
Nice small theater showing interesting films. They have a bar which is not crazy overpriced. Which is nice.
Cozy theatre, good staff.
Stopped here relatively fast to see what movies they had. Such a wide range of selections from foreign flicks to those of an indie nature created in the US. I definitely would come by at a later point, but all in all I loved how at home I felt here.
It's great to have a good movie theater downtown. The new State is a fun place to see movies. You can make a day or an evening of hanging out downtown and seeing something at the State.
Cozy place to watch a movie
Love this place!
They did a great job renovating the theatre. Reserved seats and relatively small screening rooms make is a nice change from the typical multiplex.
Beautiful theater
Really unique place. Always interesting films playing and the midnight showings are super fun. The seats are tiny.
Lovely theatre! Great vibes and popcorn.
We saw "El Camino" here, which was cool in it's own regard. I ordered tickets on the website which was nice and straightforward (did not require a lot of hoops to jump through). The theatre was nice and seemed well maintained. I had initially taken an assigned seat down in the front row, which was uncomfortable but not the fault of the theatre. I eventually moved further back and had a great experience. The only recommendation I have is to adjust the seating chart on the website. It seemed super confusing as I thought I was signing up for the back row but later found out it was the front. This didn't affect my experience since I later realized all the back seats were taken. I'll definitely return to the State Theatre to see more movies.
