125 years old gem. They have some wonderful acts throughout the year. Here tonight for Nash. Back in November for Arlo.
They have alot of things to do with kids also
It was a great show! (Amiee Mann & Johnathan Coulter).
Show was boring and not prepared, candice night did her best to entertain but the rest of the groups just rolled out of bed and acted not interested and bored, certain people in the audience were rude, especially one of the followers who insulted a fellow audience member when she wouldn't dance around with her, she was a real nut... the downstairs urinals are absolutely disgusting...
Always a uniquely fun experience!
Great venue, but apparently people were 4' tall when this place was built. Knee room is tight.
Music was great, seats not so much.
Great place, very historic. The dressing rooms could be updated a bit, and adding some A/C wouldn't hurt either
An historic fixture of downtown Northampton! Pretty good acoustics. Don't be afraid to tell people in the lobby to be quiet during the performances -- the sounds carries right through the doors.
Great show in a beautiful venue!
Wonderful venue with comfortable seating ! Sound was excellent too.
I've only seen the outside
Very beautiful theater
Awesome place to see a show
Great concert in a beautifully renovated theatre with amazing acoustics.
Studied here. Great program nice people
Great sweetback sisters holiday show
Nice venue, fairly comfy seats, good acoustics. We saw Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Starlight Express' which was the 10th anniversary celebration of Starliight's Youth Theatre. Their costumes we're made of recycled materials and the lighting was amazing! It was a simple set but very nicely done. The musical score covered a wide ranged from rock, blue, hip-hop and jazz. The entire play was a thrill to watch.
Just sending out a big F U to alison klejna, wherever you are now. Sorry you never appreciated your unpaid volunteers. Try to keep your rage in check.
Great place to see an event! Blackmore's Rainbow was outstanding!
Nice cozy theater. Great concert venue!
Beautiful building, amazing comedy performance.
Beautiful old theater that has been really well maintained.
The curtain doesn’t open!
Just a step back in time. 7th oldest in the country of kind.
Amazing
Such a sweet performance by the summer camp kiddie. We had so much fun dropping in
Awesome place!
Great venue for lots of different shows, not totally handicapped-accessible and the concession stand is cash only, but still a wonderful spot for a night out.
Great place, awesome acoustics and seating.
Had tickets in the balcony for Dr. John. The acoustics up there were dreadful. Could barely make out what he was singing. I would assume the first floor acoustics were find. Just upstairs, there was no bass, and a very tinny vocal sound
Nice place is so beautiful inside
J Mascis is amazing. Academy feels like home
Wonderful concert venue
The shows are nice if you can get tickets, but the box office doesn’t answer the phone, and takes hours to call back.
Academy of music is a historic venue with in North Hampton for concerts, plays, etc. I have been there many times and I’m always happy to go there. Typically park in one of the town lots, go out to eat at one of the many restaurants or bars, then walk over to the Academy of Music for your show. They have both balcony and floor seating. Typically I spend a couple extra bucks for the floor seating because you can get very close to the band.
Lovely old theater. Just saw Cat Power there. I was surprised that the sound system wasn't better. Scratchy, not enough volume. Also, as with all old theaters, the seats are tight and my knees were killing me by the end. Other than that the staff was friendly and helpful.
Nice venue. I think an expanded bar would be a nice addition. They closed pretty early during the last show I attended.
Nice place...lots of leg room!
I saw Amos Lee here and he was great and the sounds was near perfect. The issue I have with this place is that if you are six feet or taller, hell even near six feet tall you won't fit in the seats. The length from my hips to my knees is longer than from the back of the seat to the seats in front of me. I had to be spread eagle the whole time with the knees invading the space of the people next to me. I am six foot three and I was extremely uncomfortable. By the end of the show I was in a lot of pain from the seats. I ended up getting up and watching from the side for the last 6 or 7 songs simply because the seats caused me so much pain after trying to be seated for two hours. Another smaller issue I had is the popcorn they have. It was $4 for a large fast food style cup. Popcorn was unsalted and the "butter" they used was just hot oil. It didn't have any real flavor or anything. It was like they heated up some palm oil and called it butter.
What a awesome venue love it
Great show great sound good popped corn
Beautiful theater it looks like it open yesterday but it's been around since the 1900s. Seating are comfortable and every seat has a great view. Plenty of parking around town but there is a parking garage around the corner on Amory Street walk distance.
Such a beautiful place. So much amazing craftsmanship on the wood throughout the building. The sound of everything is so clear and the facility is extremely clean. You can tell they take pride in everything that goes on there. Everyone on staff is always in a great mood and the volunteers actually care about everything going on. Thank you all for being amazing. I will definitely be going back.
Acoustics were just great!
The academy of music is a STUNNING theatre with a lot of history. Large stage with comfortable seats and very reasonable ticket prices!
Great place to see a show. I don't think there is a bad seat in the whole place.
What a wonderful atmosphere
Incredible venue to watch live music!
Nice vintage theater with modern enhancements
If you are looking for a place to enjoy a musical performance--stay as far way as you can. You will not hear music, you will hear noise. The acoustics are that bad. How bad? Nobody in the seats around me applauded (nor did I) when the performer finished a number. Not the singer's fault...the venue's, for not making the proper adjustments in its sound system. I asked for a refund (which was only a fraction of what I had spent to see this particular concert--Mary Black's Farewell Tour) and of course did not receive one. The technical director told me he "agreed" with me, but could offer only an explanation, not a refund. I didn't need an explanation--the sound system stunk and that pretty much explains itself. So, be forewarned: the customer does not come first at the Academy of Music. The almighty dollar does.
Very nice place. There have been shows that I have wanted to see here but @ 1.5 hrs. from Albany, it's not a quick ride. Sight lines good. Acoustics are fine. Very decent concession prices. No negatives at all.
The staff and volunteers at Academy of Music are amazing and the acoustics here are much better than THAT other NoHo music venue. We always have a great time at AoM. Pro-tips: Don't wear heels if you are sitting in the balcony. The angle is steep to get to your seats and the railing is low. Also, please don't place anything on the balcony railing! The skulls of the people below you thank you in advance. Drinks are cash only, so hit an ATM before you go!
Very nice theater with parking nearby.
Amazing experience!
Just was at the bus stop I would love to a Ghanaian but I moved out of state
Gorgeous venue, great sound
The inside was very cool. An early 1900's theme filled the inside of the theater. Although in some spots vision was limited.
The Academy of Music is one of the treasures of Northampton. When I was a child the theater was a bit rough around the edges but magical and showed foreign unrated art films and documentaries. Then the building was paintakingly restored to its original glory in almost every detail. I met the Director whose name was Dwayne in the late 80s and was sometimes treated to free tickets with just his signature and Admit Two (I always preferred seeing moviescalone and never invited a guest) written on a napkin he would hand me as part of his tip when he dined where I waited tables while doing an MA in French Lit at UMASS. These days the Academy seems to be used as a music venue more than anything. There used to be several beautiful cinemas in downtown Noho...sadly none remain. The Garden in Greenfield still shows movies although the grand old cinema has been adapted to survive as a multi-room entertainment complex. The owners live their baby but it would takes bucjets of cash to restore the Garden to its Glory. There were trompe-l'oeil villages on the walls, star-shaped lights in the beautiful main hall, rich draperies, a huge pipe organ and even artificial clouds fliating above sometimes!
I saw a show here one time 5 stars
Great sight lines, great sound systems and Kurt Elling was AMAZING!
Thanks for all the great entertainment!! BOC,REVEL
Absolutely the worst customer service.
I loved the shows here
Fun and cozy feel
Great events
Great concert!
Great place to hear music. Not a bad seat in the place. Strong supporter of local music but also gets big name performers too.
Classic theater with great acoustics.
OK, No place to dance.
Excellent atmosphere; Comfortable seating.
Great venue, great concert. NRBQ outstanding performance
Be careful of online scalpers. Cost me $100.
Beautifully restored theater in downtown Northampton offering an eclectic blend of local, national and progressive theater productions and shows
Good ambience
Beautiful small theater. Highly recommended.
The place has a good view even from the loft but it's hot as hell with no AC so that you go buy waters from them for 3$. That's the only thing that pissed me off
Excellent intimate venue.
First time there and I can't wait to go back!
Always a beautiful classic theater. Seats are much comfier than back in the day. But the tiny concessions stand leaves a lot to be desired. Felt bad for the people working it. And for the people waiting in line for a million years. The people working were so stressed for the show (Cat Power) and amount of people and lack of space they had to work that they were rude to the customers. My friend asked for a second cup for the tea because it was so hot it was burning our hands and the workers were not supplied with those hot cup holder thingies, despite having tea and coffee on the menu. Doesn't seem like a big deal. Everyone else was buying alchohol any way, plenty of cups. No need for rude looks just because we're against burnt fingers
Great events and performances! Lots of live entertainment in downtown Northampton, the only problem is parking on the street is always all taken except for the handicapped spaces. The garage and lots are within an easy walk after the driver has dropped off the passengers. Very nice theatre with classic decor. Good service for tickets and refreshments! Lobby is relatively small for the number of seats. Enjoy!
Another great show! Young at Heart Chorus.
Call the box office for wheelchair accessible seats, there is a limited number.
Beautiful, many different venues
Only thing that needs to be improved is the concessions. Line blocks entrance. Checkout not efficient. Other than that, beautiful theater with very high quality sound.
What a wonderful experience last night was!
Large old theater in Northampton down town. Historic and good looking. Used as venue for Play's ballets and Opera as well as concerts easy access to bike and bus stops. Historic location. Handicap accessible.
Theater hall with very compact seating and they do not serve beer...
A wonderfully renovated space, great to see a live show.
I think every seat must be a good seat. We were way at the back of the balcony and still we could see and hear everything. Sweet Back Sisters never fail to put on a great show!
Good place to see a live show. Seats are comfortable and roomy compared to some arena or stadium seats.
I have been here multiple times to see performormances like Henry Rollins and The Suitcase Junket. The seats are all good the acoustics are great and I always have a good time.
Tops for live performance in the Pioneer Valley. Better than the Calvin. Better than a casino. Trust me on this.
Great show! Fun for the whole family!
This is a great place to go for a show if you were to ask me. The theater is large and there are lots of seats with good views. The chairs are pretty comfortable and everything is clean. The staff members are also very helpful and friendly. I really enjoyed visiting here and I look forward to coming back.
I love this old theater. It needs a lot of work, especially back stage!
Old style opera house, good sounds inside theater area. Vintage enterence and parlors.
Lovely, intimate venue
Great seats. Five star performance by Robin Trower. All around a great evening.
Very nice staff. Helpful courteous and sincere
Beautiful small theater with a broad range of great national and local performances.
Always awesome year end Bach concert
Very nice theater, loge seats have a great view of stage
Beautiful show
The Acoustics are decent. It's an old place with some historic charm and staffed entirely by volunteers or just very cool in a way, yet I would hate if I actually needed customer help because you're not being paid so what's in it for them. The negatives are some. Its filthy for the most part not in a bad way just run down old theater. They still haven't discovered Wi-Fi, credit cards aren't taking it all for concessions or even t-shirts which limited my ability to spend money even though I wanted to. Finally the bathrooms are in the basement down a flight of stairs so handicapped-accessible hasn't come to the place either it seems.
Saw the Earls of Leicester here! Incredible experience!
Great venue, all fixed seating, balcony is steep with great viewing from many rows. Good prices on snacks and drinks.
I really like it here. Good seats, tight, but reasonably comfortable. Vintage type of theater, well kept. I don't think there are elevators. There are snacks at a snack bar, including popcorn, candy, and drink. Most seating has good stage view. There may be few obstructions due to columns on ground floor in the back.
Great place but too warm in upper level of seating.
Such a beautiful, historic, public theater. And it usually smells like delicious popcorn.
Great venue! Only complaint is a cash-only snack bar, with no in-house ATM.
Beautiful theater. Gorgeous detail in every nook and cranny. Seating was comfortable and I enjoy this audience size. I wasn't thrilled w the sound. They had equipment lined along the front of stage to push the sound out but not a great success. The artists were hav8ng difficulty interacting w crowd bc of them and had to be careful of not falling over something. Really inhibited the artists for obvious teasons. The sound was off balance as well. When the artist stood in certain spots to the back, the instruments and voice were in perfect balance but at front of stage their was a lot of interfence. Northampton is a cool little town and I'd give it another try w something more collaborative vs a sole voice, for acoustic reasons only.
Favorite spot to see a show.
Mid level entertaining
Great venue very classy
Great venue, great acoustics too
Awesome place awesome staff.
Amazing place, it's beautiful inside and out, bus stop right out side but there's no parking at the building but there's plenty of parking in town. Great place to bring the kids, or a romantic night out on the town with the one you love. I definitely recommend this place to everyone interested. And there's plenty of places to eat close by.
Nice old theater
Not a big fan of the balcony seating...sound quality was meh. I think you are probably better off down below in most any seat.
What a great theatre! I was blessed in being able to perform here...
A beautiful and critical local/historical landmark! We are so lucky to have such a gorgeous old theater maintained and I'm use in our community!
Love this venue!!! It is so lovely!
Awesome community venue. very great performance space.
Great place to catch a show! Plenty of parking in and around town a short walk away. Great sound here! Not a bad seat in the house! Plenty to partake in before and after the show. Northampton is definitely a day trip where you enjoy the entire town. Definitely worth the visit!
Great theater, with classy performances. Seats are a little small for tall folks like myself, but that's not unusual.
I have seen a lot of amazing performances here and am always impressed with the wonderful feel of the space and the great service from the staff and volunteers. The level of performers they bring to Northampton is outstanding!
wonderful!
Small,but cozy and nice sound
Great little theater, we enjoyed the show.
Great concert
PROS: A Northampton classic. Lovely theater with a solid selection of shows. CONS: Popular! Reserve tickets ahead if you can.
Wonderful place for a concert or theater. No bad seats!
Twas great, shout out to the leafies they were amazing
Theater and concession area have been running much more smoothly now that it's been under new management! The building is historic and beautiful on the inside, and worth a visit.
Beautiful old theatre in downtown Northampton, MA. A perfect venue for an up close and personal concert experience. I was delighted to catch Shakey Graves with opening act The Illiterate Light performing there on May 17/19
Beautiful space, great acoustics on the theater stage/ in the hall. Lots of room for performers, although head space needs to be negotiated I'd you are backstage (in stairwells only). I would highly recommend attending a performance here, or bringing a production here! I was a member of an approx. 20 cast member (6 leads, 14 chorus) with a 60-70 member orchestra.
A great 100 year old theatre.
The best venue in Northampton
great venue
Friendly, local venue with a rich history in the early American political climate of N.E.; a place of continuing Arts in the region.
Nice venue, incredibly cramped seating though.
Quaint. Not sure there are handicap accessible bathrooms but nice theater.
Best place to see a live show around. Hands down!
Thank you for firing Alison, a deftly incompetent manager.
fabulous venue, seating is fenominal for a small theater
Very nice, comfy seating. Clean.
It's a very nice and somewhat cozy old school theater too watch live shows and concerts. They will periodically have film viewings that are educational or just for fun. The prices are pretty reasonable and there's really not a bad seat in the house. They do have national acts and performers that appear here. It is a nice place for a couples night or for family events as well.
Beautiful as always but we were uncomfortable in the balcony as it was so HOT in there.
Great venue for a show. Good sound, pretty good sightlines (with the exception of a few poles). It's a classic room, so the seats can be snug but they're comfortable. Friendly staff males for a welcoming atmosphere.
Small location makes the shows feel intimate. After the show there was little room for the signing and it got a little overwhelming to exit the location. Parking can be a hard find, unless you use the garage.
Our favorite venue!! Wonderful place and people!
Grand old theater with a proud and storied heritage. They even have dressing rooms backstage named for the luminaries that used them, once upon a time (the Liz Taylor dressing room, for example). More recently, they restored the interior to its former luster, and have a vintage concessions booth. A nostalgic venue worthy of spending the evening in.
This is a lovely old theater. It's just the right size, I never feel super far from the stage.
Need more bathrooms, plus very warm in the balcony, dress appropriately.
Great music, fair acoustics (music found muffled), beautiful old building. Very crowded space (jammed knees).
Wonderful performance and a thank you to all the staff for their dedication to what they do. Great job!!
