This Movie Theater is included in the category of Movie theater.
Nice place to watch movies.
Great new American movies. Great classic American movies. Great foreign films. Comfortable seating. Beer and wine. Friendly staff.
Very beautiful and affordable movie experience. The architecture in the theater is beautiful and has a modern and vintage look
Nice and cosy movie theater with quality movies
I love the programming here and the theater is old school elegant. The sound quality can be iffy sometimes hence the 4 stars.
Beautiful space with great showings near a bunch of restaurants
A great place to see independent movies. The theatre is beautiful and the seats are roomy and comfortable. Delicious and wide variety of snacks and speciality beers. I can't wait to go back!
A Really Nice Theater with a great staff!
Much larger than it appears on the outside. Complete with bar. Very clean.... great theater.
Love the craft beer and wine and so comfortable seating. Also the cookies are delicious! Way better experience than regal.
They had looney tunes
Great short film theatre with cultural unique films for reasonable prices great food selection as well as vino for the deeper movie fanatic.
Very cool theater. Loved the set up, the atmosphere and the efficiency. It was easy to walk up, buy tickets and get into the movie right away. There wasn't a ridiculous amount of previous. Overall great experience.
A place I go often to support my local actors and friends hey you got to do what you got to do as a actor come see me on film
Nice and clean. Went to see the rerun of star wars and found the theater to my liking. Totally recommended!
The best selection of film showings for film lovers and cheaper than most theaters around here.. love the AFI
We had a really nice time here. Great theatre!
Great movies in an old-time movie palace.
Most theaters are plain, dark boxes with rows of seats in them. The AFI theater is so much more than that, and is beautiful. Seriously, just the forms of the ceiling and walls will impress you. The 70mm analog projector is great, too. I saw Kubrick's 2001 recently, and it looked great. It's really an experience to see visually interesting, classic movies on a big screen like this one. I'm glad I don't live too far away from it.
AFI (American Film Institute)'s silver theater isn't the biggest screen (that'd be uptown), though it has a big screen (and 2 smaller). And it isn't the broadest art house selection (landmark), or weirdest "Independents" (Angelika), alt cinema (Suns), international (gotta head to the burbs). But it has a bit of each, and is a great place to see them. It is probably the best place for post talkie-era classics on the big screen--from Casablanca to the Muppets. (Silent films would mostly be at the national gallery theater, though AFI dabbles) AFI seems to host more than their fair share the film festivals. (Less so E St., Atlas and rest-in-piece Visions). Broad variety of snacks both mainstream and art-house-customary (beers, tea, fancy cookies, etc), and otherwise a good location to be waiting/playing in for a few hours before or after.
As close to a theatre from the 60's upgraded to today. There's a bar and convenient parking within a couple blocks.
Amazing place... only place around for independent/non-first run movies. Theater 1 is quite beautiful. Unlike most movie theaters in Maryland, beer and wine are available. Look out for the various themed film festivals available.
Great theater! Classic vibe. Beer and a movie? The perfect way to my heart!!
Great place to watch movies. Staff are very friendly.
Great venue, top of the line sound system, screens & projection. Too bad they don't have the big comfy recliners.
Watched a documentary mobie' The Smith perspective. Very good experience.
What a great venue for classic and eclectic movies. I have enjoyed many movie festivals, hosted movies and other special screenings.
The best place in town to watch movies!
One of our new favorite places to see a movie. It's a bit far from the house, but maybe worth the trip for the better films.
This place has amazing movies, if you have time to come out and see them. The facility is very nice, it's a remade older theater with stadium seating. It's never been too crowded when I was there, and the movies they show very quite a bit, from foreign to art, to even some Blockbuster type movies that are special in some way. There are many eating places around this movie theater as well, so it's a great place to catch a lunch or dinner and a movie.
This place is magical. Not only do they continuously put on old movies for new generations to enjoy but it's a movie palace of old. Beautifully restored and kept.
A great selection of films, a classic theater, nice healthy food from Whole Foods.
This is a great theater for cultural movies. It's a pretty well designed theater and if you end up in the front row don't sweat it, you won't be uncomfortable. It has to concessions both with great beer.
The popcorn isn't all that great and the concessions are pricey, but they have a wide beer selection and the theater seats are very plush
If you want to see a show on a BIG screen try to see it here.
Excellent movies, great food, nice wine/beer selection
Sigh a fun cool old school theater.
This is such a great theater to watch a movie. Lebowski Feat 2018 was a blast!

It it s great place, We wanna move there soon. I understand that not always has been this way, but our experience as a family was incredible. My kids were invited to an art birthday party at an art school near the whole foods, then the party walked a few blocks and we had great fun Ice skating...we walked across the street to eat at an Ethiopian restaurant for lunch. Then we walked back to the home of the birthday child and the kids finished their birthday at the park in front of their home. We couldn't believe these folks living in Silver Spring have it so amazingly great...they have the best of all worlds,,,the excitements and fun of living in an artsy and very interesting buzzing downtown 5 minutes from DC and also the green areas and peace and safety of the classical American neighborhoods....We wanna move from Tysons to Silver Spring asap
Really nice theater with a selection of movies that is hard to find. Not just your standard selection, more of an indie theater!
If you are looking to watch the latest Marvel film at the Silver, you will be disappointed, because the AFI Silver is a prestige theater - they only show what they want to, when they want to. Sometimes that means new films are playing, but even then, they are not generally the type to get a wide release. The Silver is much more special than that. And let me just say how much better it is than your typical AMC or Regal cinema, because they curate what is being shown. You could, in a single day, watch Casablanca followed by Blade Runner and end it with a beautiful foreign film like The Handmaiden, not projected digitally, but from 35 and 70mm film prints! Quite plainly, the Silver is one of the greatest cinemas in the entire country, existing as a East Coast shrine outside of New York, a little Film Mecca in the DMV region. If you can, make the trek out, it's worth it.
I am a regular customer of AFI. I have always enjoyed presentation of the movie. In the past week movie came on (no picture)? Movie was to loud? What happen?
Great classic theater feel. Saw 2001: A Space Odyssey on 70mm, this place brought a new appreciation for the movie.
The best place to watch movies in Silver Spring. Plays new old and independent films.
Very nice , small theatre.
It was fantastic. Love the play
Clean comfy seats in the large auditorium in the back
Theater 1 is Awesome
Absolutely love this theater. They play older films and different series films.
This theater shows classic and indie movies that you won't see screened anywhere else. Their main theater is huge and has a great classic style.
Old but nice theater in silver spring
This is one of the best theaters I have ever been. A great selection of movies, kind personnel and beer/wine.
Excellent venue and movie theaters
Best movie theater. Always clean, pleasant staff, great food and coffee. Love when they play movies from the 80's! :D
This is a great place to have. I love this theatre. There are 3 screens, one big, one medium, one small. They have a small licensed bar and they show independent and offbeat films. They do various specials throughout the year such as the European Film festival, documentary films and Latin American...etc... Its clean, you can book tickets online Nothing bad to say about this place at all and have been going for years now.
The gem of Silver Spring (and DC metro) for any cinema fan. From newer releases to movie events featuring classics from a particular directors, etc. to in person director talks featuring presentations of classic films, this is what you will find at the AFI Silver Spring. All presented in the highest quality and properly calibrated picture and sound. This is one of only two American Film Institute theaters in the country, the other in LA.
Unique and special. Comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Excellent movies if course, and a very good menu.
Wonderful theater with art house and independent films, and a wide array of film festivals and programs. Serves beer and wine and many great food options.
Nice traditional movie theater feel. Delicious food, especially the brownies. Good service. I would definitely love to return!
Great restored theater with a mix of new and classic movies on the schedule. Good beer and food options, too.
Best movies, best theater in the area.
The food is good. The drink choice is nice. The decor could use an update. But let’s face it, you’re here for the movies, and what a selection (from Lawrence of Arabia and Blade Runner to new art house hits like Isle of Dogs) this place is curated by movie lovers and it shows. Now if only they could spruce the place up just a little bit.
Love love love this theater
Nice theatre
Great gordeval show
Beautifully restored art deco theater showing classic and independent films.
This used to be a top organization but it has been deteriorating over the past few year. I have been a member for over 10 years but I think I will cancel this year. They offer passes for free movies. At one time you actually could see a first run movie with these passes but no more. Every new movie says passes are not accepted. Also when you bought online one of the nice things was that unlike so many other theaters they did not charge a service fee but that is no more. They now charge one. Finally they have introduced an rewards program but there is one minor problem. You cannot enroll online. You can spend time filling out the online forms but nothing happens when you actually press enter to enroll. I am very disappointed in how bad this organization has become
Beautiful theater with nostalgic sensibilities.
Thank you for sharing the movie "Step!" A wonderful experience in a classy space! .
I always enjoy the Silver Theater. The last 2 movies that I've seen were in the theaters that have stadium seating. I've never gotten food here but it looks good. The bathrooms are always clean. What's not to like?
The best theater in the area. See a new movie! See an old movie! Definitely buy the popcorn.
Great Star Wars series going on.
Such a great classic theater. I love their film choices.
Very entertaining and reasonable location.
Amazing. The gem of silver Spring. Great beer and film selection great projection seats and sound. Best place to see art films in the area. Really the crown jewel of Silver Spring.

I love this theater. The tone and clientele, are so polished.
Films that feed the mind. Location convenient. Supportive of the community. Great design on the interior. So wonderful to be able to go to movies now at my age in the same theater that it to which I went to films as a kid.
Gorgeous theater. Very spacious. Nice seats. And a good selection of drinks.
Lovely theater in the heart of an active, lively area of stores and restaurants
La Chana Amazing! Story. Just Love It! A Must See!
Brilliant movie theatre showing classic and new classics in an academic setting. Nice large screens, real butter on the popcorn!
Wonderful staff and space for an event!
AFI is a place where people who love movies go to enjoy other people who love movies it has kept it's old school feel with great popcorn, good wine and beer- and relax .
Love this place.
Convenient to the Metro; great stadium seating, sound, and film selections. There is also a wide variety of food and drink options, including alcoholic beverages, which is cool, and "healthier foods" menu. One food drawback is the large soda/popcorn combo, which on its face is a deal (unlimited), but the popcorn is very salty and the beverages are only carbonated...so if you don't do soda and watching your sodium, it doesn't work out.
This theater is lovely. I went to an event here for a special showing of a film. The theater was clean and the concessions were reasonably priced. The bathrooms were also in pristine condition.
Great place to see any movie, extra wide screen, clean theater with nice wide and comfortable seats. Alcohol is served inside the theater as concessions which is a plus. Always enjoy seeing special movies here!
Fantastic place. Great place to see a movie new or old. Screen is big, projection quality is excellent, seats are comfortable, and the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. They also have very good quality refreshments and seating area. Highly recommended.
Not a bad theatre, they have lots of interesting shows.
Best screen for the classics
Always a wonderful movie venue! Dr. No was on tonight! If you're a Looney Tunes fan, the cartoon series starts this Sunday 7/27 - 9/7! It's always fun entertainment!!
Great place to watch a movie, especially a classic!
Very clean and intimate theatre.
Simple movie theater, not too crowded, have less mainstream movies which is great!
Great theator, clean, good selectipn of moves.
Small theater vibe, opportunity to see less popular movies, edpdcially as part of film festivals
Love. Love this place. We drive from Baltimore whenever we can to see the fabulous movies they always have on. Great theatre. The main screen is the BEST place to watch top-notch cinema!
The only draw back is that if sit in the higher rows beware of the dividing wall it is not kind to short people.
Great place to see quality films. Also, good food and drinks.
Theatre exceeded my expectations!
A little old... not that bad though
Super cool theater. Amazing, comfortable reclining seat and an awesome food and drink selection.
Love this place - it reminds me of Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle -upon -Tyne. Great retro vibe with superb staff.
One of the most gorgeous movie theaters I've ever been in. It makes the movie feel like an event. And it has an actual silver screen! Only thing keeping it from being a 5 star review is the seating, which is period appropriate and, therefore, not as comfy as it could be. But it's important to the aesthetic.
I wish I could see every movie at AFI! Their staff is terrific, theaters are clean and well maintained, and the atomosphere in the lobby and concessions area is just so movie-theater-perfect. They don't show all the wide release movies here, but they're giving so much screen time to small releases and old favorites. That's a fair trade off! Every time we visit, we see posters or trailers for upcoming movie events that we want to check out. I recommend checking out their schedule online to plan for upcoming showings. You may get the chance to check out a classic film on the big screen, or maybe catch a Q&A session with a creator after a screening of their film. All the theaters here are great, but seeing a movie in the original Silver theater is especially wonderful. If a movie you want to see is showing there, don't miss it!
AFI is a gem! Films of every size can be played in the deco designed main theater.
Great place to watch old movies!
AFI Silver is a local treasure. They have programmed film series which can range on focusing on a director, or a specific film period. I have seen everything from Silents with live accompaniment to 4k restorations of classic cinema. There are few movie theaters like it in the country, and yes this includes other art house theaters. It is my favorite place to go see a movie.
It's so nice to see a movie in a historic theater with such character. Whether there are folks around, you really get the sense of community while you're there.
A treasure. It's not without irony that I must travel from the city and to the suburbs to see something I would consider worth my time and money (most people have the opposite experience). It goes without saying that this is the only cinema anywhere near DC that can screen films in 16-, 35-, and 70mm. The programming feels genuine and put together by actual people instead of by committees. When Vera Chytilova died in 2014, this theater collaborated with the Czech Embassy to screen a retrospective of original 35mm prints of her films -many of which I imagine had never been seen projected by most Americans. If you can, see something that's screening in Theater 1, which is the original movie palace from the 1930s -heavily restored- that seats 400 people. Audiences here in general tend to be niche and earnest (for a change).
Great customer service
Beautiful old style movie theater, well maintained and clean! Movie selection for not average Joe, more ambitious.
Nice place the staff is assume especially Levi Smith
So many events. It's such a gem. They have great interactions with some directors. From the Latin American film festival, to live orchestra screening of Metropolis this place is amazing.
Cool place, reminds me of theaters from the 70s. The main room is grand.
You are interested in those old unusual movies then this is the place to go.
We had a GREAT time!! Parking was great, too. 70 cents for an hour and the rest of the time was free after 7pm. AFI is a very cool place!!!
As a cinephile, how can you not love this center? Plus, the Art Deco lobby is simply gorgeous.
I love this theater. The tone and clientele, are so polished.

Beautiful old style movie theater, well maintained and clean! Movie selection for not average Joe, more ambitious.
Nice place the staff is assume especially Levi Smith
Cool place, reminds me of theaters from the 70s. The main room is grand.
You are interested in those old unusual movies then this is the place to go.
We had a GREAT time!! Parking was great, too. 70 cents for an hour and the rest of the time was free after 7pm. AFI is a very cool place!!!
As a cinephile, how can you not love this center? Plus, the Art Deco lobby is simply gorgeous.
Great selection of movies, nice staff, lots of events. They also have a nice variation in repertoire and 3 theatres with different pictures running.
So many great film festivals and indie films in this beautiful theater. They also host many movie screenings with the cast and producers. It's not a huge theater with only 3 screens, but that's what makes it a delight.
I am here with my husband Jack (John Maier) to see "Led Zeppelin played here" a movie by Jeff Krulik. John has a little part in the movie. Big, nice, place, where producers, actors, family and friends can get together to celebrate, have a glass of wine or a beer and watch a movie.
Beautiful theater with one of the most eclectic schedules in the country. Theater 1 is a must for any serious cinema fan.
Some of the theater s feel a bit old in furnishings, but the movie experience and opportunity to see both offbeat new and classics is unparalleled. Keep an eye out for movies you always wanted to see in theaters.
Very cool old school theater. Great selection of snacks! Coffee, wraps, tea, cheese and crackers...and of course the obvious ones like popcorn and pretzels.
Great old theather and films!
Fun theater space, beautiful setting
Its my theatre to attend when I'm in the silver spring Area ...... Recently saw Boy Erased & SIR ...JUST AWESOME .The staff is accommodating and the wine is very good .
This movie theatre is gorgeous! It's small in terms of theatre-size but it makes up for it with its memorabilia and obvious love of the craft.
Came here for a month long course and it was a nice setup. The chairs in all the theaters were comfortable. In theater 1, they had outlets every 3rd seat (if I remember correctly). The wifi worked fairly well given the amount of people. The staff were nice. They even serve alcohol. Only issue I had was the cleaning of the tables by theater 3. I've been sitting at the same table for almost 2 weeks now and the same stain(s) have not been removed. I find it quite odd as I'm sure they clean other aspects of the theater. Just have to be more thorough.
Excellent Theater !! Classic All The Way ..... Wish they would show American Graffiti a few more Times ...
The best film theater in DC. A must see for film buffs.
Wonderful setting for independent and foreign films
Living by this movie theater had completely spoiled for any other theater. Extra cushy seats, fun film series, and wine, beer and espresso available for purchase? It's a wonder I don't go here more often than I already do.
Nice theatre. There for a course but nice audio and visuals
Very nicely renovated theatre. Pretty good concessions and reasonably priced craft beer on draft. I prefer it over Regal, which is showing some wear and could use new seating. Definitely try it out if you've never been!
We went to this beautiful theater for the first time last night. What a treat! The main theater is beautifully restored. Very large screen with great sound system. Image quality was terrific. We arrived late so our seats weren't great, but we still had a fine, uninstructed view. And the atmosphere is "grand"--a giant art-deco gem. The snack bar has yummy and unusual treats far better than the schlocky fare at most movie theaters And they have some very interesting artifacts and exhibits in the lobby that we stayed afterward to look at. I can't comment on the other two smaller theaters as we didn't go in them.
Such a great old time theater. It has the feel of an old theater but is still as clean and as well kept as ever. Staff is very helpful and nice. They have a little cafe. They do offer various beers and wines, as well as a full espresso stand.
Great variety of snacks, the staff was very polite.. Huge screen and quality, went there with a friend and spent a great night, also because when the movie finished we stay there in their little cafe, iwe grab some wine, and had a dessert. Really cool place to visit.
This place puts on an amazing program. The theater is such a nice space, well maintained and showing films I thought I’d never get to see on the big screen!
AFI's theater 1 is large and gorgeous. Great place to see a film.
Much more pleasant to see a movie here compared to the Regal in Downtown Silver Spring. No one is on their phone, and you can get wine or beer with your movie. It's fun to go to special events like festivals, Silver Babies, or 70 mm screenings (when they work). I want to comment further on the 70 mm screenings. I had a great experience with one film, but for another film, there was a technical problem with the bulbs. It's a bit of PITA considering the tickets for the 70 mm events were twice as expensive, and I was looking forward to a top film going experience. Additionally, I agree with some other AFI members regarding the free passes with memberships. They are nearly impossible to use since every screening seems to say, "No passes accepted." If that's the case, you might as well forget about giving members these passes since we cannot ever redeem them. I understand, though, that this is not a venue problem, but an AFI problem. They should solve this for members.
Beautiful retro theater with great indie films!
This is a neighborhood gem. Comfortable seats and a nice selection of indie films.
If you're only used to big chain cinemas that only show the latest blockbusters, this movie theater should be a nice treat. The theaters themselves are gorgeous and the location offers a lot of special screenings of older pictures and hosts special events. Seats weren't as comfortable as those at some other movie theaters, but I was hardly squirming to get out of my seat after our 90 minute screening.
Love supporting AFI....for films you cant find anywhere else. Looking forward to films from the EU in December.
Great place to catch a film. During awards season you'll find a lot of the near popular movies on first-run here. But during the rest of the year you can find all manner of special showings, film festivals, collections and retrospectives. The main theater is gorgeous, and the other two showing rooms are modern and a bit smaller. Films are a 50 cents to a dollar cheaper than at the Regal Majestic a block away. Snacks too, and there's a beer and wine selection (not too shabby with some great local brews). Perfect place to see a film that's not showing at the megaplex.
I always have a good time at AFI.
Participated in the literary conversation with Angie Thomas . It was great. The theatre is beautiful. One set back was that they had a mouse running around the stage. Bold little thing, acted as if he paid to get in.
If you are a visitor to DC, don't miss the American Film Institute. All kinds of interesting films that you won't see anywhere else. A few min. walk from the Silver Spring Metro station. Many restaurants and shops nearby.
Great historic theater! Outstanding movies & programs!
One of the best cinemas around. Also, popcorn is top notch and they have a solid beer selection, which includes Delirium Tremens.
Where the stars come out to play. Whiskey served with style, and copacetic for hearing impaired, even with talking pictures from the ancient Akashic Records, Films, Papyrii, and Tapes.
I love this movie theater. It is old but well maintained. The movie selection, theme festivals and vintage atmosphere make it unique. The sound and projection quality are good. Plenty of options to drink. Having a beer/wine while enjoying a good movie is a priceless treat you shouldn’t miss.
They serve alcohol and nice snacks. Also, they show a lot of independent films and ones not in every theatre, which is pretty cool. The last time I went I saw Arrival in on of their small theaters.
AFI is a good place to view independent or nostalgic movies. There are three screens. The venues are small with 200 seats each. Theater fills up quickly. Alcohol, wine and beer are sold at the refreshment stations, as well as, Whole foods sandwiches. The traditional movie snacks are also available. Parking structure is nearby.
The AFI is a wonderful resource and provides films that aren't available at any other venue in this area. It chooses films and programs well-suited to our culturally diverse community.
loving the old school vibe to look
Always good to be back at AFI. A star is born got my attention without a doubt.
Very nice old-school theater. Nice to able to have a beer with your popcorn, too!
