You will see the feddbacks of real people who know the services of The Castro Theatre (Movie Theater) in the state of California.
As of day this business receives a rating of 4.7 over 5 and that rating has been calculated on 2012 reviews.
You may have noticed that it has an average rating is basically the best one, and it is founded on a very high number of reviews, so we can conclude that the score is very faithful. If many people have bothered to evaluate when they've done well with the service, is that it works.
You know that we don't usually stop to put feddbacks when they are positive and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or incidence...
This Movie Theater belongs to the category of Movie theater.
“South Asians are not welcome here.” I leave strong reviews anytime someone treats me unfairly, and I don’t call out racism unless it’s explicit. This theater is EXPLICITLY RACIST, and I say this because the manager told me and my girlfriend, to our faces, that he’s tired of seeing “south Asians” around here. I don’t know if he realized but South Asians are like 30% of SF’s population. Now I don’t care that he said it among the comfort of white people or non-heterosexual people, RACISM IS NEVER OKAY. If you agree, you’ll stop frequenting this hate based establishment. Since leaving my review on yelp over a year ago, the people who run this theater have been following, messaging, and harassing me online. Here’s a screenshot of him calling me a piece of trash out of the blue over a year after leaving the review. THIS bigoted white supremacist ideology is what Castro theater truly represents!! And while they peddle liberal ideologies in exchange for money, they’re fooling each and every one of you into funding racism and xenophobia. For the sake of what this theater purports to represent (I don’t believe it does), the old guys should be permanently terminated from involvement here. Better yet, expose this theater for the racist bigoted symbol that it really is. One miserable star because the manager said “south Asians” are not welcome here.
Thankfully an important part of our queer history stays strong and relevant in this city whose character is so quickly and radically changing.
So classic!! With an organ!! And new/old movies constantly!!
It has history so it is a good spot to visit
A small movie theater with older movies and a welcoming environment with delicious popcorn
I watched Mary poppins sing along and it was delightful
This is one of the last great movie house palaces. They don't build them like this anymore. And because it's so big was such a big screen it's actually even more enjoyable to watch the movie.
After hearing so much about this place over the years I've lived in the Bay, maybe I was overly excited. Aside from the very conspicuous lack of AC, this was the WORST sound system I've ever heard. Literally my high school's auditorium had better sound. We came to see Lovett or Leave it and had pretty nosebleed seats. I normally wouldn't have cared so much but it was unbearably hot and the sound system wasn't even loud enough to hear the show... We stayed half an hour and left disappointed but thankful for the fresh air outside.
Watched 2001: A Space Odyssey here this evening and can confidently say that this is my favorite cinema anywhere. It was built in the 1920s and is incredibly beautiful inside. The prices are very reasonable, the seats comfortable and the hardware very good though not what you would expect from a newer cinema. If you want a truly 'authentic' experience watching some of the best movies humanity has even made, though, this is the place!
Castro Theater is a gift to everyone who visits it. From the moment you walk in and smell the organic popcorn with real butter to taking your seats and listening to the live organ player you are transported to a vintage happy place. The organ comes up out of the floor like Posiden rising up from a storm sea! It’s huge and the music is just the coolest thing. Everyone applauds loudly when the musician is done playing and then it goes back down under the floor and the movie starts. The whole room with an upper balcony is beautifully restored. A historic landmark. They have film festivals, like Frameline and the Jewish Film Festival every year, and classic movies, singalongs and current films. It’s a great venue on all fronts.
Queer and all the kinds of love should be respected!
Comfortable seats, live organist and great popcorn
We saw The Moth here. This theater had very good acoustics and snack bar. The seats are very comfortable and gallery helps get a good view no matter which seat. Love this theater. Also a great neighborhood. Lots of good restaurants and places to grab a snack or a drink.
I always have high expectations of this place because of its iconic status but I'm always disappointed. The sound system here is really (really!) mediocre. Live performances are hard to hear clearly and nuanced sound in films just gets drowned out. That must be why my favorite experience here was watching a silent film at the SF Silent Film Fest. The lobby gets super crowded so beware of you're mildly claustrophobicor just get snowed in crowds. The events are so so.
SF institution running great old movies and new wave stuff.
Classic theater with great programming
You can see the old Hollywood glamour shining through in the decor. They still have an organist playing before the movie began. I was there for a SFFilm premiere of the movie Q Ball. Lots of fun! They have a bar and snacks.
The Castro theater yes it's an incredible place even more so with Outstanding performance's such as last night. Hi I was at the David Crosby Concert&We collectively left doubt&Overstimulation behind. Using our voices lead by.Mr.Crosby..Singing proudly..WHERE Here!!It was a Neuro blast Off! Such a Rare&Powerful Moment..thank you for holding our voices..dream's&hope's!The Castro theater..simply walk through the doors&magic happens from fairies who past before!
Saw "Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert" here in 1994. One of the best movies experiences I've had. Love SF!
A historic place that you must visit. Hearing the historic organ before an evening show is wonderful. They are a main venue for many LGBT events, especially the longest running LGBT film festival in the world, Frameline.
Used to go as a kid and glad it's still here!
While on vacation in San Francisco in 2017, I decided to go to the Castro Theatre. I believe I saw 2 movies by Orson Welles. I really enjoyed them and the atmosphere.
Such a special venue. Famous cinema but came for a concert and the experience was unique!
One of the best 'old time theaters' in San Francisco. They do everything from movies & sing-a-longs to live stage performances. This theater even has an organ that rises from the orchestra pit and gets played prior to movies and other performances. I just volunteered for the. San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus at the Castro Theater where they performed their yearly "Home for the Holidays", and we got to watch the last performance of the night. Its a very special place!
Cold no heat, they should have issued refund a, many paying customers left before the movie ended. Would not recommend!
Beloved grand old movie palace, lovingly cared for. Screens classic movies, art house films, film festivals, sing-alongs and some first runs. If you love movies, you'll love this place. The anchor for the Castro District Historical landmark for so many reasons. Sound and film qualities maintained to industry standards. ADA rest room. Parking difficult, but not impossible. Recommend MUNI Metro to Castro station. Couldn't be easier.
The most fascinating theater I have visited ever! It’s very dramatic and cool pipe organ playing.
2019 SF film fest with the kindergarten was a wonderful experience.
A classic, beautiful old-school theatsr. Go for either a classic movie or for one of the many special-interest live shows!
A wonderful theatre. I love the singalongs and any event that starts with the organ rising out of the floor and serenading the audience into the show.
Beautiful theatre, great movie experience
I love this theater. I always have fun here, and they have a beautiful space and a lot of fun events.
I forgot the precious camera here, but the good people of the theatre kept it for me!! Thanks a lot!!!
Lovely theatre with lots of history, not the best place for live music since they don't have trusses to hang lights above the stage. Not an easy neighborhood to find parking, so make sure to carpool or take public transportation.
I love Castro theater. Very old and they have restored it. Love that they show old movies
One of the best movie houses in the Bay area. Absolutely beautiful interior. Really nice staff. Interesting venue. Always a joy. Beautiful Grand organ that raises out of the floor. Every tourist should see a movie there.
The Castro is always fun. It doesn't matter what's playing.
This is a beautiful venue. No bad seats
My friends and I came here in July for the screening of Jaws the shark movie. It was GREAT to see it in the theater, my parents warned me but I did not listen! So cool to see it like this.
Beautiful architecture! An historic landmark in San Francisco. It was originally built in 1922. Here you can see foreign films, repertory cinema, film festivals and special first run presentations. The theater also has a large stage for live performances and other celebrations.
The Castro is definitely worth a visit!
It's so gay. I guess it's okay since it's in the Castro. Aren't there any New Artsy gay things they could play at this theater rather then reruns of the Golden girls and silly looking old men running around with death rock make-up on poking fun at the way other people dress and look?
I saw a film for the Frameline Movie Festival. The Castro Theatre was a wonderful venue with great acoustics and a good view from any seat. I especially enjoyed the music from the historic pipe organ as we found out seats.
Classic. Fun sing alongs. Family friendly. LGBTQ+ friendly.
perfect place to watch special event showings in the middle of the Castro
Great theater. Beautiful venue for seeing movies and other types of performances.

Great place to watch a show
Lovely and vibrant neighborhood!
This place is a local treasure. So happy to see that it has been kept in immaculate shape. We go every year for the gay men’s chorus, but would love to go for a movie. You have to go in side to see how beautiful this theatre actually is.
Love it! Had such a wonderful time! Killer show!! It was packed. Easy close parking! Can't wait to go again
Lots of film festival. An old theater that has a lot of charm. A must go to.
Iconic grand palace of motion pictures, brought back to it's splendor, film festival venue, retro pics & occasional sing-a-long classics ...
Great we'll kept old movie palace.
The decor gives me the feeling as if I'm in a "proper" theatre and suppose to be wearing a penguin suit....
Wonderful restored theatre with great events and movies.
Old Huge movie Theater Facility in SF with Balcony & Piano player before start a movie!!!
Classic movies in a beautiful old world cinema. The organist playing live music is great.
Always a good place to enjoy a classic movie
Been several times and have loved my experiences here. The building is spectacular and special events are a blast. Would highly recommend a sing along. So much fun.
Don't be afraid of a few queens, check it out. A step back in time.
Here’s the gay life. Don’t miss this colorful district full of coffee shops and bars.
I saw Devil in the Flesh / Satiricon here years ago and the organist played throught the silent film. It was a once in a life time opportunity to see this beautiful theatre.
We attended a sing-along version of Bohemian Rhapsody and had a blast!! This is an amazing historic theatre, originally built in 1910!!
Great classic movies and the interior is gorgeous!
This is one of many beautiful theatres around San Francisco. It was built in 1922 featuring a Spanish Colonial Baroque style facade. Interior is very plush and ornate, capped off with an over the top extravagant Art Deco Period chanellier. The original 1920's Werlitzer organ is still used on occassion.
Fantastic old fashioned organ!
Best film house in the city, what a old time movie palace should look and feel like instead of the sterile cold boxes there building now. 1st matinee of the day is best ,people listen no talking phones are on mute and no bright cell phone screens too be seen and you can't beat the price and the smell of fresh popcorn sets you in the mood too enjoy...
You must see a film here if only to be witness the grandeur of this theater and hear the wonderful organ.
Saw the SF Gay Men's Chorus for the second year. Awesome show, beautiful space!
Always lots of fun, and lively crowd in a famous 1920s theatre
Great single screen theater. Watched Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm. Iconic landmark and has a great lineup of classic films. Must visit for cinephiles.
Beautiful old theatre with eclectic and modern events.
Love this theater Seen great movies
Amazing and always new things goin on
It was cool. I had a great time.
It IS part of Castro heritage and rightfully so!
I attended an event here, the place was great, even if I think the seating was a bit cramped like a traditional theater is. Nice big viewing screen and beautiful ceiling architecture. There's a great set of local shops just on the street, and most everyone in SF is very friendly. Would recommend going again.
Love the theater - love the Mighty Wurlitzer
Built in the 1920's this theater is gorgeous inside and out! Spectacular movies and concerts galore. As a native San Franciscan, I'm so grateful and proud to have this gem in the neighborhood. You must experience it to appreciate it's history and beauty. ❤❤❤
Amazing venue! I love the decór and they always have fun things showing in there. Definitely a jewel in Castro.
Beautiful theatre inside and out. Great selection of old and new flicks. Overall excellent experience!
This is among my favorite theaters in San Francisco. first off, over 90 percent of the time, an organist gets the crowd warmed up before the show. second, you can really feel the history of the theater as you look around. third, there's a balcony! also, for cine/movie festivals this place is perfect because there is a stage for q&a, introductions, etc. did i mention that a couple of doors up is a place to grab some hot cookies before watching your movie!?! if you haven't been to this theater, do yourself a favor and check it out!
Went to see Gloria Steinem speak. Great atmosphere in one of San Francisco's historic treasures. We sat upstairs where you can reallt appreciate the architecture of Timothy Pflueger who also designed Alameda's theater.
Always love shows here! Nostalgic old theater... Nice staff & good bar & snacks. Excellent location for after show activities close by.
Quite simply, a landmark!
Organ recital before frameline movie screening is awesome. Classic theater.
Exterior and interior are in superb condition. Hope it stays open for a very long time.
Historical SF movie theater! Beautiful.
Such a great and eclectic space! Will definitely go back for more shows
Amazing street and everything on that! You have to visit San Francisco and see all culture of gay community!
Iconic. Some call it the "Heart of the Castro," and it has been central to San Francisco GLBTQ culture since its restoration. You have to see something there to fully appreciate the venue, and if you are lucky, you will be treated to delightful live music played on the magnificent theater organ before your film or event.
First choice. I love visiting regardless of what's playing. It's a grand old theatre.
There is nothing else like it for a cinephile in this country. The Castro is an American classic movie theater with an organ rising from the floor on special events. Art House style movies just like the 70s before video changed our movie-going habits, still make the rounds at the Castro.
Haven't been inside yet. But love to be in Castro district and having the theater there. It is very popular and there are crowd in front of the building when an event takes place.
Such an amazing landmark and beautiful theater! The organ player was an added bonus.
Great place to watch a show

I’ve seen several shows at the Castro over the years and have always had a great time. There’s not a bad seat in the house, aisles are wide and easy to navigate, and it’s a beautiful, historic theater. Definitely one of my favorite venues.
One of the best SF theater
A great gay experience for grandma and the kids. TRIAL BY FIRE!
It’s fantastic here
Old movie theatre. Limited in every way. Seats, sound, and environment stale like the flavor of the popcorn. Restroom is antiquated and in the basement. Seems to emerge from the medieval period of movie palaces unaffected by the last 100 years of the evolution in cinemas.
Great place to see a movie or even better a sing-a-long. Beautiful deco decor. They've been updating the sound and video systems, so great for movies.
We did the Bohemian Rhapsody sing-along here. Everybody was given a bag of party goodies, including glow lights. We sat in the balcony of the jam packed theater. The preshow, with Freddie Mercury impersonator contest & performance, put everyone in a festive mood. But, the experience I'll relish forever was during the sing-along the entire audience would wave their glow lights, creating a rich tapestry of color & light. It's rare that you have a performance that engages an audience's senses the way this movie has. When it was over everyone felt exhilarated, as if they had witness something truly special. I love this theater, I love this movie, and I loved the audience.
This is wonderful piece of the neighborhood. Don’t miss out on this gem.
Adding to the pile of amazing reviews. Such a special place. Love the organ!
Amazing experience, with organ music to start of the show
Beautiful Theater! Wish I could spend every day there!
A Heritage kind of place, with all vintage look..
i’m obsessed with this theater. really great films and i’d go just to be seated to the sounds of the live organist :)
Beautiful theater, they just need to up their popcorn game.
This is the grand Dame of San Francisco movie theaters. Although centered in an LGBT epicenter, it hosts an array of classic films and most of the major film festivals. Go for evening weekend shows and you might get to hear the organ played before the screening.
Really neat theatre! Only (minor) gripes were seating and audio. The seats were eh, not bad but not the most comfortable. For a comedy cast, they had speakers on the sides, which were painfully loud for people that sat anywhere near them.
The movie was very nice, however the yeast was not vegan.
Beautiful, vintage movie theater with a badass organ inside. They play it in between every movie. Showing classics like "It's a Wonderful Life," "Casablanca," "Singing in the Rain," "Some like it Hot," etc. A must-see if you're in SF.
Iconic. Beautiful. Great staff.
Nice to see historical theatre still around. Organ playing before show is great. Seats are uncomfortable. 1 movie is ok. Don't do double feature or u get home with a backache. Awesome monthly show calendar very well made.
Funny enough I’ll always remember Larry not because of Larry or the Giant Tattoo I got on my Lower back that say’s “Larry”. But because of the people Larry brought together this night. Heros, Lovers and Family those are my Friends. Thanks Larry for being a scientist of and for the the people.
I usually come here for the Noir City film festival. I dress up and haul all the way out to the City to watch other people's bad luck in black and white, and it's glorious. Most people dress up to go to this event, there's specialty cocktails at intermission along with concessions downstairs (they have It's Its!), and the second story has vendors relating to the event, like pulp fiction, makeup, and Noir City merchandise. The theater itself is BEAUTIFUL inside - vaulted ceiling with gilded carvings, a second story balcony, velvet stadium seating, and a stage in front of the single screen. They even have an organ! It's a gorgeous example of an old time movie theater, and it feels like the kind of place to dress up for, even if it's not Noir City time. I love it. This would be a great place to bring a date, especially because of the fabulous food and drinks around here for nibbles before or after. Cannot recommend enough!
So beautiful, so fun. The sing alongs are the best. But get there early, everyone wants in. We stood in line in the rain and it was totally worth it.
I've lived in San Francisco for over forty years and I've always loved the Castro Theater. They carefully chose their films, and sometimes, there is an organ player before the show, always ending with a rousing version of "San Francisco Open Your Golden Gate..." The Castro Theater is true San Francisco.
I'll always love the beauty of these sort of theaters.
Great old place to see a film... Silent film festival is a great event they have yearly to go see.
A truly fantastic place full of history and of great importance to the LGBT+ community. Definitely worth a visit!
It's a real fun venue. I got to see JJHo for the second time. It was wonderful.
My hands-down favorite place in San Francisco. It's always a treat to go there for a show or movie, and they present lots of double features and classics. The Castro Theater is a treasure!
Gorgeous old time theatre
The most unique cinema theatre in SF! Only The Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto can compete with this one.
Went to Singalong Mary Poppins and it was a blast. Really fun place.
I'll always love the beauty of these sort of theaters.

The most unique cinema theatre in SF! Only The Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto can compete with this one.
Historic and iconic movie theater in the heart of Castro. Totally recommend their sing-a-long performances which day run regularly with different movied. I recommend checking their website in advance to see when is the best showing for you. We watched Queen on a Sunday and the theater was packed but comfortable. Paying extra for the sing-a-long was absolutely worth it! You get a goodie bag with fun props the audience can use while watching the movie. there is a costume contest and everybody is just joining in the fun!! I loved it
Beautiful building, unfortunately wasn't able to go inside.
Beautifully restored, old time movie house. Healthy snack bar with great popcorn. Came from Sacramento to see a movie not playing in my area and this historic theater made it worth it.
Great location. Audio system and the comfort of the seats need to be improved.
Old school theater showing classics ,cult and popular. Great organist plays before some shows. Beautiful old school movie house.
Beautiful old theater right in the heart of Castro. Great place to see older films. The prices for popcorn and drinks are surprisingly reasonable. The ladies behind the counter seemed to have an attitude as if they were doing me a favor by selling me popcorn and coke, but it was late and maybe they were tired.
The jewel of the Castro- a must do for any tourist or local. Screens new films, old classics that change almost every other night (tonight its blade rummer/tron double feature). Bonus: occasionally they bust out the live organist.
Great place. Love the Castro.
One of the finest theatres in the entire Bay Area! Fabulous selection of wonderfully diverse shows there year-round. Although they don't serve any alcohol they totally deserve a "5"!
Beautiful old theatre. Every time going there for a movie or event is worth it.
Went on my first date with my bf here, excellent experience, and a beautiful part of gay history
One of the most beautiful movie palaces still around!
This is the most fun movie theater I have ever been too!
Gorgeous old movie palace with organ. Largest single screen theater in San Francisco.
Authentic old, but well maintained movie theater with lots of atmosphere and beautiful interior. Many programs of quality movies, curated by film experts. Best movie theatre I know.
This place is a classic in the annals of historic motion picture theatres. Be sure to go there when the organist us performing prior to the start of the show. What a thrill!
Beautiful theatre with live organist for movie intros. Lots of old movies to see on the big screen. Fantastic neon sign. Love this place.
The free pitchers of cold water were so kind on the hot day!
It's beautiful inside! Great venue.
Phenomenal neighborhood theater. Well curated, full of fun unique events, and part of the heart of San Francisco
San Francisco's best venue for festivals and repertoire. Theatre a treasure. Popcorn excellent. Staff cool.
Beautiful building and so fun to sing along to your favorite music. They even have an organ that is played before the movie begins! Wonderful viewing experience great for all ages - film content appropriate.
a classic spot for a double feature, get a hot cookie afterwards
Iconic and I love the organ recitals before each show. My favorite film Lawrence of Arabia was playing here recently, and it was a delight to hear the sound, and digitally remastered visual blasting away my senses in the grand auditorium. They have no military or veteran discounts but one time the ticket booth clerk was kind enough to give me one. Their double features are very well organized, artistic statements of provocative and intelligent film experts.
The Castro Theater is San Francisco's queen movie house. It's a historical landmark that's retained it's 1920's beauty (be sure to look up at the theater ceiling!). Along with with showing current and classic films, it puts on many special events tied in with various film organizations making it an ongoing go-to experience for film lovers of all ages.
sing alongs - great sci fi - classics galore really - and an organ, what's not to like!?!
It's a beautiful historic building. Love the old-timey piano they play before shows that goes down under the stage when the show is ready to start.
Great classic SF theater with an eclectic selection of films and events.
Great place to perform with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus! We had 3 great shows on Christmas eve.
Amazing atmosphere, will definitely come back for more movies
Maybe the last grand movie theatre in San Francisco. You'll love the pre-movie entertainment. That being a genuine pipe organ which rises from the floor to the stage level. They often host sing-a-long movies like Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge or The Sound of Music.
They have shown movies I like.
