REVIEWS OF Landmark's Clay Theatre IN California

Christopher Grafton

Came for the Rocky Horror Picture Show, which plays the last saturday of every month. The theater has a beautiful historic front, and a very "historic" feel on the inside. Old but good? Movies are good, seats are comfortable, standard landmark snack-food concessions: popcorn, soda, cookies and stuff.

Kevin Jackson

Love it

Justin Edwards

It's a little odd going to theater with only one screen, but they show movies that aren't playing anywhere else. Plus, the staff is really kind and the neighborhood had a really easy going feel.

Daniel

Really fun

Lauren Reed

Small and quaint. Expensive compared to similar theaters in the city. I liked that a staff member talked to the audience before starting the film.

Randall Henry

Great single screen historic theater. Excellent sound system and sharp picture on screen. A real gem.

Palomares Francisco

Can't go wrong wth this theater. You can count on always catching a good movie here.

Claudia Nichols

The original Clay Theatre within that gorgeous Art Deco building containing the old-fashioned, much missed, and highly prized Big Screen. Always a good film available. Hospitable Fillmore Street offers meals and beverages before or after the show, so don't fill up on popcorn. A treasure of the City which you owe it to yourself to savor.

Brian Low

Great historical theater

Gannko Mule

Went to see stan and ollie. Lovely place. Very old school. Volume was a bit low in our opinion. Other than that it was perfect for what we wanted.

Kristopher Cavin

I just come here to throw spoons.

Santani Teng

Lovely old movie theater probably joining its bygone compatriots soon, so see midnight movies here while you can!

Chris Kocher

Great theatre. Many good programs.

Frank Sherlock

Great movies. intimate setting

Roy David Rettberg

Raja Najem

One of the best single screen theaters. The owners are fans of Jeunet films so you know you can't miss

Audrey Chan

Artistic cinematic appeal in a quirky humble theater

May Bresler Herzog

While it's not the most spectacular of movie theaters, the screen is small and the seating is a little odd, this place has a ton of character. I would absolutely recommend to visit during one of the "special" night, such as Rocky or the room. The atmosphere is electric, this theater not only supports the behavior that comes with watching these cult movies, they help and provide accessories to it (such as balloons during party scenes etc.) and even brings in the actors and such for special occasions. So fun!

Greg Bernstein

Great spot to watch The Room

Bridget Lewis

Great theater. Intimate atmosphere and great service.

Angela

Cozy, friendly, old fashioned, theater. Love it.

Eileen Lee

Chris Kukstis

Great place for a classic midnight movie! Friendly people and great curation.

J Goger Malo

Wolf Rendall

Fantastic historic theater that plays artsy limited distribution movies. Support it!

Jin-Won Kim

The theater is big and the screen is not bad. The seats are sloped very low, so if there's a really tall person front of you, bottom part of the screen might be covered.

Richard Saethang

Classic Fillmore San Francisco experience

John T. Maloney

New seats, but still filthy, smelly and tired. Avoid, it's an embarrassment to SF.

marjorie

Went to the Clay on Jan. 5th. Saw Amour, French movie, good. What was the problem was the popcorn. I got very sick from the rancid oil used. Who knows how old it was or how recently the popper was cleaned. I won't describe the symptoms, but let's just say it was very unpleasant and took several hours to pass. To charge $7.50 for popcorn and serve nauseating garbage is unforgivable. Eat at your own risk!

Wonderful independent theater for watching unique and interesting movies that will never be shown at the mainstream theaters. Kind and friendly staff. Interesting and impactful movies.

Sara Dunegan

Better than Disneyland!! Can't wait to go back!

Sudhir Sohoni

Extremely genuinely portrayed. . Great treat to enjoy.

Historic single screen movie theatre is San Francisco. I come here to watch the movie The Room, if you haven’t experience this you have to. When friends come from out of town and the Room is playing I bring them to experience this event. Surprisingly the seats are comfortable at this theatre. Unlike other theatre in San Francisco, popcorn and candy are inexpensive here. Also, this theatre is located near nice bars and restaurants.

Max Dzitsiuk

luca castellotto

Great theater with nice indie films and throwbacks, try thier midnight movie

Sherry Amanpour

Clay theater is our favorite movie theater in all San Francisco--it maintains it's soulfulness...something we would pick any day over reclining seats and more expensive ticket prices...we visit every week....love it...

Gabriel Roland

sandy y

what a room

Meg Ward

Wish the seating was more comfortable, but that's my only complaint

Azar Afif

It's an iconic movie theatre in Fillmore which shows different and european movies. It's not a fancy theatre like amc and those types. I like it a lot and also there are nice and understanding staff.

Thomas Philipps

Doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the newer movie theaters, but it shows films with an independent and art focus and gas great popcorn

katie loughran

I love this theater. It is one of the great theaters left in San Francisco. I go frequently, and the people are so nice and wonderful, and the popcorn and drinks are too. The theatre is beautiful and we should all be supporting these theaters and supporting the movie industry. It is an entirely different experience watching something on netflix vs. sharing the audience experience watching a great movie on a large screen Jeanine Loughran

Del Rio

Daniel Hutchinson

An intimate and simple single screen cinema. I liked the variety of movie posters placed everywhere. It has all the requirements to enjoy a film but none of the fluff and flash of more expensive theatres. Highly recommended for a date or any romantic get-together.

Alex Mackenzie-Torres

One of my favourite indie theatres when it comes to thoughtul movies. I love their staff, they are nice and attentive and their popcorn and chocolates are out of this world. As most of our theatres in SF of this kind, the place needs some love (ie refurbish). Apart from that this is the place to go for good independent movies.

Marc Chambers

The midnight Rocky Horror shows are an absolute blast.

Jamie Jarabek

Aimee Coca

Krystyna Maliniak

One of my favorite movie theatres in the city. Great movies, comfortable seats. There is only one big room, which resembles the old great movie theatres. There is enough room for everybody.

Don't go to see "Rocky Horror Picture Show!" You'll never hear a word or a song. This is audience participation on steroids. UGH!

Great little indie theater. Needs seat upgrades though.

There are only two single screen theatres remaining in The City. This is the one on Fillmore and coffee and food all around. They do show a lot of foreign films and the one we saw this time was US and Israli. The popcorn is good and the staff great. This photo is from the S-Bucks window.

Jamie Lee

Really nice independent theater! Classic style of cinema with one screen and a lot of low rows with plenty of seating.

The second oldest movie theatre in San Francisco. The walls are filled with old school movie posters. Small, but cozy.

Simon Buret de Longagne

Very cute little old movie theater.

Was pretty great up to the point the person at the concession stand misgendered me, and then actually went on to defend that it wasn't actually an offensive thing to do, etc, etc, etc. It makes me wonder exactly where they think the venue is located. Interrobang, interrobang, etcetera.

Paula K

Had a good deal on tickets. Hard to find movies playing there.

Dried up old stale popcorn at an outrageous price aerced with a fake butter substitute but consistantly features a fine selection of good and important films.

Jake Pullman

Seats suck. Shows are awesome.

Jonathan Ford

I have neither liked this place or disliked it. I've seen great films here and have seen some duds. I don't care for it's location,as you're pretty far out of trendy urban civilization if you go here, and in what I'd say is snobville. The screens and everything else in the theater is nice, I;m glad they stuck with the same decorations all these times. I regeret not going to the midnight Rocky Horror Picture show when a crush I had on was in it, ah I bet she was good!

Chris Yarger

We are so lucky to still have this wonderful place in which to see first or sometimes third run movies in a palatial setting and with other people. Went twice in the last three weeks, to see the same movie, Norman, actually. The popcorn is hot and buttery, the tea, spiky and delicious, Nathan's great hot dogs, milk duds! Wow, and matinees are super affordable. Like a synagogue, it's just easier to get close with others around. Go! Go,! Go! Again, I've been going to this place since I was a child. It more than lives up to memories, I take my own girl now. The help is devotedand lovely.
