You get what you pay for. Big-box home improvement retailers may offer cheaper prices than here, but you are lucky to find employees at the big name places that know as much about hardware as these people do. You have to look for ten minutes at a big-box place to even find someone to try to answer your question. Here you can't walk from one end of the store to the other without five or six people offering to help.

This is the absolute best place to go for hardware (and more). The staff is friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Unlike HD or Lowes, they have a plumber, an electrician, etc., so that you can speak to someone who knows what they're talking about.

Worst experience, here wanted to get a car key made out of my valet key, and I wanted to use a replacement i had baught off amazon. Was told by one guy to have amazon cut it. and another implied what I was trying to do was illegal or something. Both identified themselves as managers. Jon was extremely rude. Would not reccomend shopping here, based on horrible customer service.

I love this store. I like to fix things myself although I'm not ultra handy. The employees will not only direct me to what items I think I need but will also help me adjust my projects to make them easier! They have advice and tips and one time a guy even told me how to solve my problem with tools I already owned. Amazing customer service! Great sales and seasonal items too!!

My favorite place to shop! After remodeling 2 commercial spaces, a house, and owning a multi-family, I've gone to them with my share of projects and they've never steered me wrong. Sure, one or 2 products didn't work for me as they were different than what I finally needed, but they'd gladly take them back. I find the staff very helpful - it's like going to my dad. SIgn up for their Ace Rewards and you'll get credits to spend in store.

Dave in plumbing is amazing! He always has been. In the 12 years that I have been going to Maine Hardware for parts for plumbing jobs, Dave has never let me down. His knowledge base is ridiculously extensive. I am saddened to hear that he is retiring at the end of the year. Jeannie T. at the front counter is amazing. She is attentive, focused and thorough in her job. You need to have Jeannie T. train all new hires. It was actually a treat to spend money because Jeannie and Dave made the experience outstanding! Sometimes I don't work in that area and I end up going to Home Depot (Which is fine. They always get me set for a job, but not as well as Maine Hardware) or to Lowe's (They get it right 50% of the time) and then I forget how awesome Maine Hardware is. They are truly a whole different and superior caliber store and service than you will find anywhere else.

I've lived in the area, shopped there for 25 years. Went in today, with some Carharts my sister had bought as present for me, which were wrong size. Thought she said the receipt was in the bag, but couldn't find it. The fellow who "helped" was cranky and prissy, spewing all kinds of rules about returns etc. (I had another pair, which another relative had given me, also wrong size, and he jumped all over me for trying to "pass off" this pair as having been bought at Me Hardware -- even though I'd told him upfront I had no idea where they'd been bought -- and he was quickly able to scan label to tell that they weren't.) The fellow was just plain rude, and I've had much better service at Walmart. He treated me like I was trying to con him. Also (and this may not be his fault), said that if I wanted to replace pair with a cheaper pair (bec they didnt have the same higher-priced in my size), then I could not get cash back. I said, oh, ok well you can give me a store credit -- to which he snapped --- we don't give store credits. I think that's on management, and it's a b.s. policy if that's so. So much for the down-home touch. Based on that experience, I'll shop elsewhere. (To be fair, there's one older fellow still there, who I know, who ALWAYS is cheerful and helpful, and remembers you.)

Maine Hardware is a Portland institution. Once you start shopping here, you will avoid the Home Despot when ever possible. They manage to have almost everything in a much more approachable store. They have helped me solve so many problems, from fixing leaky faucets, to retapping a cross threaded bolt, to carpet cleaner rental, and at least a hundred other things. Not all the staff is 100% fabulous, but most of them make up for any gaps in knowledge with great service. A great store an free popcorn!

I rarely leave reviews, but they are well deserved(both good and bad)! I bought a new/ used dishwasher and none of the parts looked the same. I went in and Adrian helped me in plumbing and asked me to bring the part in because the photo I took didn't look right. I came back and not only did he know what I needed, but had several different options on the counter waiting for me. He explained why, sealed the threads with tape, and re-packaged everything for me. During this I asked him how he liked working there and he said, "It's a place that you retire at, they told me that when I interviewed that we focus on customer service and we take care of our employees." Any organization would be lucky to have him as an employee, but I truly feel the culture he explained to me attracts those types of people because of it. I own a business and understand the importance of getting feedback, keep up the great work!

Don't go anywhere else!! Great selection, good prices and amazing service. Walked in there and explained a leak I had in the garage disposal and the very helpful employee explained exactly how to fix it and handled me everything I needed. I went home watched a dyi video for a refresher and BAM! problem solved exactly as the employee illustrated. Went in another time with a 20% off coupon for the entire purchase. I saw a paint sprayer that I've been considering for awhile was $20 less than the big box stores, so I purchased it, along with paint and supplies. After the coupon, I walked out having spent $40 less than a big box store.

Thank you so much for making my day, Kistine and others who work at the store, for accommodating my unusual circumstances and make-shifting me backpack straps so I can carry the box fan on my back! I love Maine Hardware. Like other posters, I’m impressed by the staff’s knowledge and their eagerness to lend their expertise. For whatever reason, plumbers never follow through at my house. Maybe it’s because I’m female, maybe plumbers get annoyed because I like to research projects prior to talking with them (I enjoy home repair), maybe they’re just too busy. Anyway, plumbers’ absences have left voids in my home maintenance, and I’m slowly learning more about their trade and saving money by doing it myself. The only reason I have become more confident is because of Maine Hardware (YouTube helps too). When a project goes sideways, like a bib screw head shears off in one of my compression fixtures, Maine Hardware bails me out. For my next project, I’m going to install a utility sink that 3 separate plumbing companies have ghosted me on, and I’m sure I can do it with Maine Hardware’s help.

Doug "Brownie" Brown was an absolute pleasure to work with for answering the many questions I had regarding some plumbing repairs I needed to make around my house. He took the time to explain a number of different ways to tackle each project, weighing the pros and cons of each method with me. I cannot put into words what a great experience I had at this store, thanks to this gentlemen. Far too often you will go into a hardware store and be ignored or received half-baked advice if you're lucky. Brownie knew his stuff and was outstanding. He even took the time to entertain my headstrong three-year-old so I could have an uninterrupted minute to think over my plan of attack for fixing my plumbing. That is service above and beyond anything you see at other stores, and I can safely say that Maine Hardware has earned a customer for life.
