REVIEWS OF American Locksmiths IN Illinois

Andrew Gladney

Rip off artists charged me $48 for the half hour it took the slow moving and thinking locksmith to write up the invoice - AFTER FINISHING THE INSTALLATION WORK and another $48 for him to describe the locks he had for me before he started working. Eight trips back and forth to the truck and I think I paid for his lunch hour, too. 90 minutes total ACTUAL labor - if that- yet somehow I paid for 180. When I called the manager to complain about this injustice he told me to pound sand. BEWARE. BEWARE. They'll lecture you about how they've been in business for 40 years. Yeah, well, Enron was in business for forty years, too. NEVER EVER use these guys if you care about getting value for your hard earned dollar. They are out to pad your bill and scam you blind. Just another rip off service business in a rip off world. Everybody wants you to pay for the owner's vacation cruises. Take a pass on these guys. You'll be glad you did. Do it yourself and send the bill to American Locksmith.

Locks, keys, over forty years of real experience, not big box minimum wage people who don't know and don't care. Oh, yes, every key guaranteed to work. None better than Bruce and his team; they get the job done and get it done right!!! (His personality alone will bring you in to his new location at 9012 Manchester.)

Oles Makarenko

horrible customer service, nobody don't have a deal to people who just came in

Bruce was very helpful making me a key that worked for my car and home! Great experience!!

Melisa Betts Sanders

Perfect place to go if you like being talked to like an idiot. (Ponytail) gave me a ten minute lecture about buying a lock from a big box store without having seen the lock (I'm an architect, it wasn't purchased from a big box store) and played with a knife before I just walked out.

Rebecca Linz O'Laughlin

I walked in this morning with a broken door knob. I was waited on immediately, and the gentleman showed me exactly what to do to fix my door knob. He was patient and clear, and $14 and about 10 minutes of work later at home, my door knob is completely repaired and I am thrilled.

Worst place ever they never showed up on multiple occasions the lie all the time don't ever call them

Been going there since the mid 80s... wealth of experience... even had them crack a safe for me... Bruce and I are the same age

Richard Hollocher

Keys always work for me. Been going there over the years Thanks, Richard

In the intriguing, eclectic shop this AM with lock needs well cared for while enjoying a conversation about ponds, owls, koi and a red fox.

I've been in twice to this establishment and both times the customer service STUNK. I would not waste my time or money here again. I'm not sure who owns this business but if I treated my customers with the lack of care, attention and professionalism that these bozos do I would not have any customers. Go to a REAL Locksmith that is going to treat you like a customer not an intruder.

Chip Magner

Had trouble having key's made at two different places went to them and they worked great.

Corey Logsdon

Hung up on me while I was asking about their services.

Jessica Ditch

I highly recommended American Locksmiths! They were here in less than an hour, changed out 2 sets of deadbolts and door handles and re-keyed 2 other doors in about 30 min! I was shocked how fast he completed the job. The technician was friendly, professional and thorough. And the price was affordable! This is the only company you should ever call for locksmith services! Thank you guys so much!!!

David Betz

A locksmith was dispatched promptly and my issue fixed at a competitive rate. Thank you.

Bruce the owner very nice guy if you need a key go see him you may get it done cheaper someplace else. But it may not work either he guarantees is work so if you want a key that works go see American locksmiths

Dan Busse

All of our applications seems to be "oddball", and they have the blanks, equipment, hardware, and know how to get the job done. Can't compare to other locksmiths, as I have been going here for years. Yes, occasionally Bruce likes to, er, lecture, on the news events of the day, but they are knowledgable people and have courteous field staff.

Je Ko

Absolutely the worst customer service ever. Very rude and dishonest. The guy tried to cheat and make me pay more, and when I confronted them about a markup price, he hung up.

Stephanie Higgins

Called very poilte after the last company I spoke to prior. He could not privide the services I need but was awesome enough to recommend other that may be able to.

Tommy Haury

The hours are incorrect on Google. The shop is open from 9:00-4:00 M-F Service techs work 8:00-6:30. On the road. If you call at three something, don't be suprised if the afternoon is booked up. ( Christopher Titus)

Herbert McKeown

Does great work. Only place that has hard to find keys. Call before you go he’s often out on service calls.

Matthew Martin

Gruff and condescending service without a smile.

Curly Harrison

The owner once bragged about how savvy he was with customers. Hmm, how did he go from 8 trucks to 1? If you need electronics serviced, you'll have to call someone else.

Thomas Sommers

Discovered this place on referral. Old-time locksmith store with a sitdown counter. Found that the owner Bruce had lots of knowledge that he was willing to share about my problem. He got me my new parts for my antique door . More useful was the advice that came with it which was not available online. one review below said thathe wanted $10 a key to copy.Someone right before me brought in a key that he wanted three copies of. They were two dollars apiece.

Steven Siebe

Second time I've been to their store. I have nothing but respect for these guys. They know their business. I travel from Florissant to get a lock and key for a historic home with original skeleton keys that I could not get anyone in my area to reproduce. He also gave me installation hints that I would not have known. I returned several weeks later to have another lock repaired and my electronic car door opener repaired, not only did get great service, I was not charged after he worked at least a half an hour on both my locks and key fob. Excellent service and respectful attitude. I will never go anywhere else.

Drea Kovacic

Great service and great price! Was in and out very quickly.

Constantine Cosmas

These locksmiths would not give an ETA for service so I called Pop-A-Lock instead. They arrived in no time and completed the job. As they were writing the receipt, a fat guy with gray hair from American Locksmith arrived and fought tooth and nail over being payed the $65 service call even though they never gave an ETA. I paid him his stupid service call and then cancelled the payment via Amex. Don't use this locksmith.

PHONZZ WONT DIE

Accidentally bent my car key, the owner fixed it in 10 mins. Super reliable will recommend thank you.

Carlos Arnavat

They wanted to charge me nearly 10 dollars a key to duplicate it. Not sure the owner knows what is going on with his bad ratings, nor if he even cares. I found Sure lock and key down the street about 4 or so miles , super nice, at 1/3 the price.

John Dunlap

Cecelia Davidson

Excellent and speedy job. He replaced my 10 year old broken Rav4 key that was taped together with a brand new one and changed the battery too! great service. Great price.

Michael Adams

Excellent service. Needed a older vehicle key cut and spent the extra time checking its function to satisfy its working correctly.

Angie Monteleone

Bruce was extremely helpful and polite. He answered my questions and helped me efficiently and was very knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend them. It’s actually the second time I’ve used them. About 8 years ago they made a replacement key for our car and it worked the first time and they were courteous and provided excellent work and service. That’s why I called them this time and we were very pleased. We will definitely go to them again.

Jeff Eberhardt

Bruce is an idiot . Needs to retire to play with his dog and talk with costumers that are friends more . Almost an hour wait and keyed same lock the same key didn't rekey it to a new key like I asked and had to do it over again because he was talking with friends plus answering phone calls . In addition helping other customers while I was waiting for a ten minute repair. Some other staff member working their just sat at his desk or playing with dog. I will never use this company again . It's a shame you can't find good service now days . I oversee 500+ units your loss American locksmith

Bradon McClay

Been in here multiple times, guy behind the counter is kinda of a carefree old man, doesn't care if he has your service or not. He Tried to over charge on basic filing cabnet keys. Which is fine, whatever, you need to make your money but the customer service sucked. Not locksmiths you can rely on. Use someone else.

Please be aware! I am a small business located 3 blocks from his store--8798 Manchester Road. I needed our front door rekeyed. Easy job-the worker was in and out under an hour. The final bill was $163.02 He charged me $72. for labor, $48.50 trip charge, and $41. for 10 keys. Final bill was $163.02 Way to expensive for me! I have another guy-that usually charges me about $90. But,he wasn't able to get to us for 2 days. Next time I will wait!

Christopher Titus

Horrible service. Every time I've gone in they take a long time to get to me despite having no one else in the store. Usually on the phone or talking to each other. Called today to get lockout service at 3:30. Said they don't have anyone available they're wrapping up their day. They close at 6:00.

Lisa Hoeft

Locked out of my car. Technician arrived promptly and had my car open quickly. Great service and reasonable pricing!

Cassandra Roberts

I really don't think they deserve one star. My grandmother was locked out her house. They gave her a time of 30 to arrive at her house. Well after 2 hours have passed and no sign of American Locksmith, my poor 84 year old grandmother called the location to ask where they were and some ol guy ripped her a new one. The guy yelled at her. Complaining that other jobs ran over. Told her she needs to be more careful with her keys. This business is disgusting. It's the low class small business owner's like American Locksmith that scares people away from smaller companies. I guess since she not a hot young busty girl so they didn't go out their way or at all.

Gary Wasylenko

LOVE this place. Their keys ALWAYS work. I tried a "box store" today because they were close and convenient; but, the keys didn't work. I won't go anywhere else again. Always American Locksmiths.

John Bilot

I broke a car key and thought the end was still in the ignition. It turned out it wasn't. There was nothing to duplicate it but he didn't charge me anything for looking. The guy is very sociable and easy to talk to. He seemed genuine and was able to get me what I needed even though he couldn't duplicate the key. I recommend this place.

Craig Anderson

You have to look carefully to find there new loacation at 9012 "A" Manchester, a block West of Brentwood Blvd on the South side of the street, but they have lots of experiance and do fine work.

Justin Shepard

Honest guy, I needed a new chipped car key and he gave me some advice on how to do it cheaper.

Despite having read all of the negative comments here, I went into this store to have a key made. Their location was close to me, and I didn't feel like driving to another locksmith during afternoon traffic. I regret that decision. After waiting several minutes to be helped, (the guys were behind the counter talking to each other and completely ignoring me), I was finally able to explain how they could help me: I needed a 7 pin tubular key made (those are the small round tube-like keys that you may often seen on filing cabinets, or in my case, goes to a small fire-resistant safe for documents.) I had lost the keys to that safe some time ago and rather than pay a locksmith to open it for me, I purchased a tool made specifically to open these types of locks (the same tool the locksmith would have used) for $20 on Amazon, and saved myself the cost of the locksmith visiting my house. Well, I decided I should finally get around to have an actual key made again, so that brings this story back around to American Locksmiths. "Ponytail" refused to make a key for me off of the tool that I had been using. OK, that's his right to refuse the work. He said that it would be unethical. LOL, OK, I guess I can understand how some people may attempt to use this tool in nefarious deeds. The thing that insulted me was "Ponytail's" attitude towards me. There was plenty of opportunity for him to politely and professionally decline to perform the service, but instead he was just rude, contemptuous, and spoke to me as if he had just caught me trying to break in to his mother's sock drawer. I should have just saved myself the trouble and listened to the reviews. TLDR: If you want kind, polite, professional service; GO ANYWHERE ELSE!

Meggie Edwards

Very courteous! Good fast service, I made a silly mistake with the battery in my key fob but wasn’t made to feel stupid. Quick fix when the other locksmith wanted to charge me 80$! Would recommend and being business here again
