Sallie Mae is a disgusting, selfish conglomerate that does not care about its customers. They offer no assistance to students who are struggling to make payments. They make it so easy for low income students to get loans in the first place and then screw them over when it comes time for repayment. Something needs to change with how students are repaying loans.

This is the worst company to have a loan with! They use the LIBOR and their rates consistently go up. Mine went from 11% to 13.25% in less than two years! Horrible! They said the rate would fluctuate and even out. No it doesn't! It just goes up and up!

I had been having great experiences with Sallie Mae until very recently. Realizing that I would not be in a position to pay the full amount on my student loans for a few months, I called about a repayment plan at the beginning of November. The representative kindly helped me find one at a much lower value to take place starting next month. When I looked at my upcoming statement for December, I was confused as to why the amount was still the same. When I called I was told that (for an unknown reason) the new plan wouldn't come into effect for another month. The woman gave me the option of a forbearance (at a fairly high fee) but then informed me that if I took the forbearance I would lose my eligibility for the adjusted repayment plan. So in short she told me that she could not help me and happily left a recent college grad stuck between paying a rude corporation with 0 customer service and paying my rent and buying groceries. I will from now on and forever recommend to anyone to get their loans anywhere else.

I haven't really had any issues with Sallie Mae. The few issues I did have were quickly resolved same day on the phone. The customer service reps I talked to were all very nice and helpful. I'm still in school, but I have multiple loans, some even 4 years old now. My interest on them hasn't changed, they've all stayed at about 9%. I havent used the autopay on the website, I set it up through my bank so I cant comment on how that is. If you're ever having a hard time paying something because most of your payment goes to the interest instead of the loan, make biweekly payments. More money will go to the principle that way. On another loan, I've knocked off almost 10 payments by doing that and paying $10 more per month.

Stay away This company is greedy, cruel and inhuman. They hold me responsible for two student loans that I never requested or co-signed. They didn’t move the finger to verify the wrong information filled out on the applications. I am disabled, in poor health and they continue to threaten me and harass me. They are killing me intentionally, knowing that i am disabled. I am still looking for a lawyer or institution that will be strong enough to defend the truth and show the greed, abuse of power and brutality of Sallie Mae.

They called me 9 times in one day, i finally answer, its an automated system telling me to call them, i call back and I had to wait for 15 minutes, and come to realize it was because they made a mistake. If you are in college, use any loan company besides this.

If you have a loan with this company and are having problems paying it RECORD EVERY CONVERSATION WITH THEM. You will be very surprised how far up the chain of command you get before talking to someone who will actually be recorded. Keep this information and make copies as well and notify an attorney especially if a Co signer is involved. I made payments in a reduction program and while I was told these payments would bring my past due balance current they were mailing my Co signer threatening mail about damaging his credit if he didn't pay the full past due balance. The past due balance was why I was in the program!! Three payments to bring my account current then all was good for a lower payment. This sounds an awful lot like extortion to me. This company can never give you correct information either. I enrolled in school to finish my degree and was told I had plenty of student forbearance to go back. Then when I sent in my information to put the loan on hold they told me I wasn't eligible for the student forbearance!! I had to drop out of school and this happened twice!! Now I own the college a balance because I waited for sallie mae to let me know the actual terms of my loan and eventually had to drop out again after the withdraw date! As I said before RECORD ALL CONVERSATIONS with this company. Tell them you are recording as well and ask to be on the phone with someone who can be recorded. Best advice I can give.

Do not use....abort mission. Find someone else. It takes an hour anytime you need to call in, change something or pay a payment. IT IS $14.00 TO CALL IN AND MAKE A PAYMENT??? Just a processing fee??? Really? Isn't that all you do is process payments?? Try paypal Sallie Mae they are cheaper...... YOU GUYS SUCK!!!!!! HIRE SOME PEOPLE THAT SPEAK ENGLISH!!!!!!

I can't believe anyone would give them more than 1 star. terrible service. if you need to call them, you WILL be on hold for 1-2 hours...not exaggerating. they screw up your auto payments, I have tried to increase mine for over a year and they still can't figure out how to increase it to the amount requested, then after a couple months they automatically decreased it without asking me. how is it that I can't increase it, but they can decrease it? maybe if they would respond to my e-mails or not leave me on hold for 2 hours I could get an answer. This just goes to show you that if you have enough money, you can get away with anything. Also this genius that posted 5 stars. Sallie Mae preys on the young and naive. How is it that American youth are even allowed to make a decision regarding student loans that can affect them for the rest of their lives, during a time where they still have to ask permission to go to the rest room? Shame on Sallie Mae and shame on our federal government for supporting such a predatory system! Saddled with debt at a 10-11% interest rate. At $1200 a month. My loans cost more than average rent in my state. After two years of consistently paying, while living with my parents. I've only knocked off $2,000 dollars from a 100k loan. No option to consolidate. No chance of refinancing. I'd have no issue with paying if their was some form of IBR based plan (like FASFA loans), but nope. Sallie Mae will never offer you anything until after you default and ruin your credit. Nor does the government care, by refusing to allow student loans to be discharged through bankruptcy (which would also kill your credit, but at least it would eliminate the debt). At one point I was even suicidal. I've settled with defaulting. I'd rather take my chances against the idiots in collections than I would dealing with these payments. At the rate I'm going, I will die with this debt. I'd rather my credit be ruined for the next 7-8 years than deal with this any longer. Corporations like Sallie Mae are run by sociopaths who only care about the almighty dollar. It serves no purpose in trying to work with them. The best chance we graduates have against these predatory tactics are a mass strike. We could crush the banks by simply refusing to pay. They've already made more than enough money off our blood, sweat and tears. I urge anyone to default as soon as possible. Look into your state's "statue of limitations". Private student loans still apply to the SOL. For example, in my state, the SOL is 4 years. After 4 years of not paying, Sallie Mae (or any collection agency) can't attempt to sue me for the debt. After 7 years, the debt is wiped from the credit report as if it was never there ,and my credit will be pristine again. Consult with a student loan lawyer, purge any assets you have before doing this, get yourself a car (or even better a car payment, so that the vehicle becomes secured through a bank) and just default. Its the only way to beat the student loan corporations at their own game. Also check out r/studentloandefaulters for some nice tips and stories. CRASH THE SYSTEM! NO PAY FOR SALLIE MAE!

Making a deal with Sallie Mae is like making a deal with the DEVIL. Do not choose Sallie Mae. If I could go back i wouldn't have done a Sallie Mae loan. All these "one" star reviews are correct about Sallie Mae. Please put a lot of thought and consideration in before you decide to go with Sallie Mae. They will not help you out in anyway when it comes paying back your loan. Bottom line it is not worth it to get a loan from Sallie Mae. Stay away stay from away from them!!!!!! Its not worth it!!!! You will regret it later!!!!!!!!

Terrible. IF YOU CAN, CHOOSE ANOTHER COMPANY TO GET A LOAN. PLEASE. If not, keep record of every conversation you have. Seriously. I regret getting a loan with them. I'm back in school, but they still want money because my class starts late.. I do not have enough money for grad school, so how the hell will I pay them. My other loans were understanding and very responsive. These people will not help you. They are more like loan sharks, because regardless of your financial situation, regardless of your attempt to make payments, they do not care. Its quite sad. I was even lied to about being helped. Only lies. one lady had an attitude with me, so I hung up. I also hung up on another person. If I stayed on the line, I would have said some harsh words. Why? Because of the BS they were telling me. Loaning from discovery or wells fargo bank as my classmates did is a better option since their customer service at least has the ability to WORK WITH YOU. Just lost my job and needed a one month pause and couldn't even have that!!!!! "We'll raise your interest up quadruple if you do" Wow!!! Whatever you do, don't sign with sallie mae, horrible!!

Please do not ever make the mistake of getting a student loan with Sallie Mae. They lie, they cheat, they increase the interest rate without your knowledge, they lose documents, and you are penalized for their mistakes. They also harass you with calls and emails even when they claim you are on their "do not call" list. Now they have messed up my credit over THEIR mistakes!! and I have to spend the time fixing.

Each call is worse than the last. I am not mad I owe them money. That is my responsibility. I am mad that I need certain information from them about my loans that I cannot get because each time I call in over and over and over and explicitly state exactly what I need, I hear the same promise that the representative understands and will E-mail me the information and have to wait a few days to get that information E-mailed to me, and every single time, it has been a document showing general information that is easily found on the website without calling them not even close to what I have gone over a hundred times with them. Each time I tell them the same story with a new call to add to the story about how what I need is never given to me and each call ends up with different, equally obvious information which is far from what I need. What useless customer service.

consider not going to school before you EVER take a penny from them. When it's time to pay them back, they will not help you refinance and ask for an absurd amount of money per month. Interests rates are unbelievable. you are nearly paying what you borrowed TWICE!

They have taking advantage of me when I couldnt make the payment they push the payment through anyways. I even told them I don't have the money in my account so please stop the payment they ok we will do that but 2 days layer the payment went through which I didn't give them the authorization to do so. I went to my bank and they told me that what they they did goes against rules and regulations they are suppose to follow. So just be careful about this shady company.

More like -5 star ratings.... This was literally the WORST financial decision I ever made. If I could go back I would have never chosen this company to help me through college. I warn everyone to stay as far away as possible. They have no repayment options besides the one they give you and a 12 month forbearance over the life span of the entire loan....(which seems overall normal compared to my other loans BUT at least the other ones I have loans through have other payment options). The interest rates are rediculous and their “auto enroll” to pay rarely ever comes out when it says it’s supposed to.... STAY FAR FAR AWAY! Or you will end up using practically your entire paycheck just on your loans for them to have majority of the loan payment just go to interest while only about $5-$20 actually go toward the loan itself.... There are not enough words to emphasize to stay away from this loan service.
