I love this place. I have been a Chattanooga resident for 8yrs and this is the kids and i favorite spot to visit. So many free and fun programs. There's always something to do for everyone.

There is a quaint coffee shop here that serves great coffee and it's convenient for students who want a quiet place to study or for anyone who wants to read books.

This place is amazing. Most libraries are, but this one especially so. Lots of books, of course, but also a ton of kid-specific stuff. Baby groups, workshops, etc. There's a 3D printer that is free to use (and has been there for at least 3 years now). The staff/volunteers are amazing people. Super friendly and knowledgeable.

Jason Mitchell

Amazing place for the whole family. So much access to knowledge and our kids LOVE going!

The wifi doesn't work the two times I've been here. The design is cold and industrial. The men's bathroom doesn't have a door. As others have mentioned, there are a lot of homeless people, but this doesn't detract from the quality of the library itself, nor is it the "fault" of the library. I'm glad the homeless have a place to go during the day and potentially better themselves. Show some empathy people :)

This review is for the children's section - my wife and I were travelling through Chattanooga and took our toddler to the library to pass some time. It is by far the best children's section I have ever been to at any library. We went twice over the weekend. The storytime was really engaging, and it was packed with great activities and toys. I get that libraries are about books, but getting kids interested in being at the library and engaged in the activities there seems like a great gateway to being interested in the books. Plus most of the activities were educational. I wish the children's section was like this where I live!

I visited while on vacation. As an avid library lover I had heard great things about Makerspace and other programs here. However, from the moment I walked in the place smelled like urine. It was a very distinct piss smell all over the first floor. They had two security guards at a metal detector entrance. The building was old, outdated, and gave off cold vibes. Homeless, as many libraries everywhere do have a homeless population that use them; were everywhere taking up valuable desk/computer space. It seemed there were more homeless than actual patrons. The book selection was paltry, surprising since this is the main branch of Hamilton County. On the second floor was the childrens area, very nice but seemed in need of updating/repair. The Makerspace was on the 4th Floor. Now that was actually superb for a library. They had everything from sewing machines and looms to a VR Studio, Photography Studio, 3D Printers, etc.... Pretty much anything you needed for any project was available. I was impressed by that yet disappointed in the rest. I believe a library should be the pinnacle of a city just as the courthouse and other important community features. It should feel comforting and welcome, and have a large variety of books on any subject. However, for such a large city as Chattanooga this seemed more like a cold warehouse for the homeless. Perhaps the city should move Makerspace to it's own location and fix up the library. It is in desperate need of renovation.

First of all i should start out by saying that I didnt decide to write this review on an impulse. Libraries (good ones) are anchors of their respective cities. This is by far the worse library I've ever visited. The staff are exceptionally rude, unbelievably so. Maybe there are some things specific to me that would cause this, but I've talked with other people that agree with me. The building is in desperate need of a remodel. Paint is chipping away at various places on the interior and there are large swaths of space that just aren't used. I guess I'm kinda spoiled by the stately courthouse like exteriors and super modern interiors of libraries I've seen in other cities. I'm actually having a great day today, so this review is coming from a good place.

We love our public library. The staff has become family over the years and we are looking forward to all of the renovations. We love the kid friendly programming and 4th floor!

Cassandra Nice

Love our downtown library, excellent programs and services and the second floor is solely for kids and teens. Staff are so friendly and helpful, so grateful to have this fantastic resource in our city.

The place and facilities should be a little bit more clean

Patti Warren

I love the downtown library. The staff are always polite and helpful and I enjoy bringing my son to the children's programs. They also have a lot of interesting events throughout the year, such as conventions for small business owners, which are well put together and fun to go to.

I have always (for the last 30 years, at least) found the Chattanooga library system to be very organized, helpful, professional, and community-oriented. Perfect...no. But for a public (government) system, it is as near perfect as I have experienced. If the drivers license departments would take notes and implement some practices, what a difference it would make!

Nice staff The place seem a bit old but what they offer is amazing! Check out their activities! We live the activities for children. Mrs. Olga does a wonderful job at "baby bounce", 30 min of songs rhymes and books for infants. Don't miss that if you have infants or toddlers!

Bill Johnson

Great staff and collection. This place is very cutting edge and has received much praise nationally. They even have a coffee shop, with great coffee and prices!

Judith Gray

I love it its like a second home

David Underwood

Rude security, rude staff, needs renovation.

Nicole S

This is the best place with a great selection and helpful friendly staff

Greg

Nasty. Wants to charge me $50 for library card because I live right outside city limits. No privacy except for nasty bathroom stall. 90% of the people here are either homeless or want to play on the internet. So the building is treated like that. Tables and chairs pushed to middle of each floor so no one is sleeping. No break room because of the people leaving trash. Will never come here again if I can help it. Very sad that one of the places of unlimited knowledge is such a pit...in such a nice area too. Workers are nice at least.

Andy Beard

Very clean and well appointed building.

Great place with a coffee shop and a great floor for tech experiments (4th floor, it has a Vive to experience Virtual Reality and 3D printers). Great selection and if you're a member of the public library, you'll get access to ebooks and audiobooks as well. It's a nice and quiet place to get work done and hang out.

Not sure to what the negative reviews were reacting. Visited on a Saturday, and there were kids and adults working and playing on every floor on well maintained equipment. It's an old building, but one maintained with care. Several staff members chatted with me as I wandered around, and they were all helpful, and positive and excited about their library. There were volunteers from the community working with the staff as well, which is always a good sign. The Maker Space on the 4th floor is something to visit if you're in the area. Very large, very well used by the look of things! Clearly there were a lot of different groups cohabiting the space and sharing expertise as they pursued their various projects. On the day I was there, there was a group doing textiles (a large loom) and an instructor demonstrating how to paint in a traditional asian style.

I would give 0 if I could. Paid for parking to come just to find out I would Have to pay $50 a year for a public library?! In what world is that necessary?! Guess I won’t come here ever again.

Big zeke

Way too many homeless people I know they got to go somewhere but geez nasty also the people who work there are so rude stay away from this place

Dale Granberry

Lots of things for people of all ages

JD Moore

This place is a shell of its former self. looks more like a vacated warehouse instead of a library. The older white man that works the help desk when you first walk in has no people skills at all, doesnt even make eye contact just grunts and continues working on whatever he was when you first approached. REALLY?????????

YSK Az3l

If you want to get some work done on a computer, don't rely on this library. Way too many people in the adult area using the computers for games. They have 24 computers on the 1st floor but I promise you that people will be on them all. It's like people set alarms to get here. Also it smells like arm pits on that floor so good luck.
