Since I moved to Attleboro in 2001, I have been a frequent visitor to the library. I found the librarians at that time to be friendly, helpful, and polite. The staff has changed recently and my experiences have changed also. I have been accused four times of damaging books, but when I protested, the charges were removed. A few weeks ago, I took out a book Void Moon by Michael Connelly. I noticed that the book was in very poor condition, but he is one of my favorite authors, so I did take it out. When I returned it three weeks later, I was notified that I had been charged $25 for damaging the book. I sent Mr. Avery a letter telling him that (1) the binding was so loose it was barely keeping together, (2) the plastic cover was dirty and stickyi, (3) the whole book was riddled with all sorts of stains and (4) it was published in 1999. . I have just received a curt letter from a director telling me that I have been blacklisted (my term) from all libraries belonging to the Sails network. I can go on line and loan a book through Nook, but cannot get any physical books. I lived in Dedham for 43 years and this is my first unpleasant experience with a PUBLI C library.. I will not be going back. To make something good of this sorry mess, I have donated $25 to the ONE FUND. Am I the only one to be targeted this way?
