If I can rate this library one star, I would. What a horrible experience. My family just moved to Reading, PA a week ago, and we were seeking a library card for our 6 year old son who will be attending a library trip on Thursday. As a working family we haven't had much time to get all our information transferred from NY to PA, and were using the little time we had to get our son adjusted to the new town and school. Unfortunately, we received no assistance at this library. We were told we could not received a library card because we needed to go to another library that had an agreement with the school he was attending. Meanwhile his teacher explained I can receive a berks county library card at any location. Then we were told it was mandatory to have a PA state ID or license, we explained we just moved and had an utility bill as proof of address and valid NY state ID's, and a school letter indicating the need for the library and the school trip scheduled for Thursday. Then we were told an Ecard could be given, but an electronic device was needed. We explained we would not be present during the time our 6 year old son attends the trip and he does not carry any electronic devices to school. Then we were told our 6 year old son signature was required and he needed to be present. This is when I knew this librarian just didn't want to issue our son a library card. I explained my son has special needs and has difficulty writing, and would not be able to sign his name. A blank stare was given in return, and a "reply of oh, your child has special needs" was given. I then realized this librarian was not going to help us and give my son a library card. We contacted another librarian and was told all we needed was and ID, didn't need to be a PA state ID. Also, the child did not need to be present and his signature was not needed. Very dissatisfied and disappointed how the librarian at this location handeled the situation.
