xiao hello

Fine enough library except for a consistent slightly odd and unappetizing smell. Lovely facade. A small branch library that while busy is not overwhelmingly populated by noisy rude patrons - just the occasional ones. Quite nice for a branch but will never supplant the quiet elegant opulence of the Stephen Schwartz library building at Bryant Park in my heart - though that may be a fairly hard standard to live up to. For what it is, I adore it, and am so glad that despite all the budget cuts this wonderful institution is here.

Pretty good library, but straight up slowest elevator I've ever used in my life. It didn't really interfere with the library's function, but I'm not kidding, this thing was so slow it's worth mentioning.

This library is one of the oldest in the city and it surely looks that way from the outside. It is a very interesting building with great architecture. It is kind of small but they have friendly librarians and I usually reserve my books online and have them shipped here. I love this library!

Worth a visit if you have an spare hour or so.The building itself is grand and beautiful.I wish I was able to just chill in the reading room with a good book but it wasn't open! Free WiFi is always a plus.

An amazing mini cathedral-like architecture that features a bi-level glass walkway. The library isn't that large, but it's a great place to browse books. Has a pretty good selection of recent releases.

Nice Library, I Enjoy going there more than any other library....

Classic old school library. I spent many days there as a kid in the 1980's. When you actually had to use your brain instead of a computer!

Don Ackad

Temporarily closed until early January 2019.

Neat, old, library with a lot of history. Decent work space that is usually pretty full. Staff is pretty friendly and it's a nice quiet place to get some work done or hangout.

Be advised, "january" has been delayed to an undetermined time.

Our favorite library by far. MIss Thea, the children's librarian, is so knowledgeable and friendly. Being an East Village mom of a small child herself, she always has a wealth of information, and knows every author of every book you ask for! She is amazing. Miss Abby too! My kids love going upstairs and seeing both of them. Love this library, and all their programs!

Friendly staff and convenient but a limited selection of books.

Historic building tucked in the east village, the library is a little small but I don't mind.

If you're on the lower east side, this is a pretty cool thing to see. Historic building was home to NYC's first lending library. Later it became a dispensary. The terra cotta molding around the doors and windows is fantastic. Hard to believe it has survived in such great shape. On 2nd Ave between St. Mark's and 9th St on the edge of Alphabet City. Fun neighborhood - mixture of gentrified and definitely not. Next door . . . Otto's Tacos. Best in NYC

Small selection of books. When I went here I was yelled at by two separate crazy homeless people (in the library). I was trying to walk into an aisle to look at a certain author and this homeless lady had dumped all of her stuff right in front of the P authors and yelled at me for being so rude as to ask politely if I could look at the books in that aisle. The other lady clapped in my face and yelled that I was in the way and told me I was very rude. These seem to be the common inhabitants of the library so if you want to browse in peace I suggest a different branch.
