Two years ago I left a five star review with this text.
"It's no wonder that this library was rated the best small town library in the country in 2015. I am very fortunate to go there regularly. There are not many books they don't have access to, the staff is great, and there's something there for our whole family (ages 3-43)."
I have to lower that review to two stars due to recent actions taken by the board on the basis of staff recommendations. The board recently decreed that all evening programs must conclude by 7:30 p.m. This meant that the Mystery Readers' Book Club could no longer meet in the Library (as it has for ten years) because most of the members could not arrive at the library early enough to finish by the time set by the board.
The book club members were not consulted by the library staff or the board before this decision were made. The decision was made and then we were basically told to be happy about it.
When we expressed concern, the library chose to make threats about Interlibrary Loan fees if we met somewhere other than the library. Though they've said they'll not issue those fees until the end of this fiscal year, what happens after that is still up in the air and I don't have much hope.
Much of this ill will could have been prevented by talking to people before the change was made. None of our efforts at having a fruitful conversation have gone anywhere because the board has made its decree and we're just being required to live with it.
The disrespect shown to long time members of the library constituency is simply unacceptable. One of the wronged parties (not me) has served both on the library board and the library foundation board and has raised thousands of dollars for the library. That she wasn't consulted before the decisions were made is tragic and wrong.
