REVIEWS OF Main - Detroit Public Library IN Michigan

The Detroit Public Library is truly a center of learning for all. The library is well stocked with materials for everyone. From babies to new parents to elementary school students, college students, researchers, scientists, writers, editors and our beloved senior citizens this library offers it all. As part of the Michigan electronic catalog system a variety of inspiring and study materials are also available online. Through the Detroit Reads! Program the Detroit Public Library at this branch takes the lead in the providing reading and writing tutoring to adults. Also offered are classes and tutors for English as a Second Language. Not only that, they offer training for the tutors! Math tutoring is also provided at many levels, from beginner to advanced. The building itself is a historical monument. Through paintings on its walls and statues and other objet d’art throughout the structure the story of Detroit is well told. The stories of Detroit’s inhabitants are offered for inspiration. Also contained at this location is the premier ancestor catalog for Wayne County Michigan. That’s not all – there is also an extensive technical, scientific and historical library concerned with the city’s and the region’s automotive history. Computer classes are offered here in a state-of-the-art classroom set by trained and well prepared professionals. I like the classes as they are unlike any I have seen elsewhere and offer a thorough and refreshing look at our modern world and technologies. Taking a test for a profession is just as easy as making an appointment. This is a registered testing center. Again – that’s not all – they have the training materials all ready for preparation for a wide variety of exams from Overland Truck Drivers, to Postal Workers, to Cisco Certified Network Administrators and on and on. As another plus this location is a wonderful place to visit in and of itself. Located between the Detroit Institute of Arts and Wayne State University there are three other major university libraries within walking distance! The building is decorated with all the power and history of this great city of trade. Have fun! Read a book! Ask a librarian a question – you’ll never know what you might learn! Catch you in the stacks ,ciao!

I been coming here since I was a teen. I helped recommend some of the Manga and video games in the Teen Hype Center when I was younger. Anywho, this library has almost everything. I love the structure, the events, the staff, and location.

Terrible place to work!!!! Harassed by a customer on multiple occasions and as an employee at the time, I felt as if they didn't do enough to ensure my safety in the work place. Also, the managers I had encountered picked on certain employees, especially the younger ones. Overall its an unhealthy work environment and they need to do better. The pay isn't worth what you'll have to go through on a regular basis.

WolfGang Gold

Great place. It has a HYPE center where my friends and I can hang out and play games all day. The HYPE is for ages 13-18. If you are not that age you can go explore the rest of the library. They have a kids section where younger kids can read kid friendly books. They also have, business, management, and other sections for different people. They consider everyone and is always trying to help. Visit the main branch for your wonderful experience!

Worth visiting even if you are just touring through. Fascinating and awe-inspiring historic building that still uses card catalogs and has gorgeous murals! Grand and cosy.

If you’re not interested in the library aspect, still be sure to take a visit. The details & architecture of this building are so cool. They also always have little exhibits & fun things going on. It’s a must stop if you’re at the DIA.

When attempting to obtain a library card for my daughter, I experienced terrible customer service! The older heavyset woman allowed my Chile’s & into stand in front of her without her saying a word. She looked up at us & continued to do what she was doing. We then got in the other line and he then said something. But still no smile, conversation. Just rude!

Love this library, only thing i can stand is parking by the hour...they could at least get parking for he public you know.

Sean Turner

It's a damn shame that Deb Dorsey and Lauren's Dorsey would do their nephew Cunningham horribly, and abandon them because they are lgbtq. They put on such a pleasant and kind front but they do their family wickedly. Deb Dorsey threw away the Wonder Bible that their nephew Cunningham had given them with his panhandling money. Cunningham Junior was always polite even at the Christmas party.

The entranceof the Detroit public library is grand with marble arches and long wide halls. The third floor however has alwaysbeen my favorite. Walk up the center stair case and to see tall arched windows decorated with stain glass. You feel as though you're inside an ivory tower with high frescoes decorated with copper squares. The paintings in the arches or the walls seem to be renaissance inspired two story art pieces that tell a tale of a different time. If there wasn't any books this place would make an amazing museum but it has books, films and music which makes it better. Try to visit every gallery upstairs that you can and feel the grandeur of the place. They top this off with friendly staff.

John Cain

There are things and information here that cannot be found on Google...Absolutely stunning collection. And if you ever have a chance to visit what I can only call the vaults in the lower levels of this place, do even think of turning down this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Michael Hickey

This is a grand, yet quaint old library up in Midtown. It's easy for the uninitiated to get lost here, but chances are good you'll find the book you're looking for.

Roaches in woman's bathroom...and no free parking.almost missed my GED test looking for parking....had to pay the city to park, then got ticketed because the exam was 2 and half hours long.but I was a beautiful building. I'm proud to live in Detroit.

It is a beautiful building, a great place to visit. The library is very diverse and inviting. The programs are good ,from Java and Jazz. to exciting reading programs for the kids. You can take out books, rent videos, take computer classes, surf the internet and just tour the building and the surrounding areas you won't be disappointed.

Richard Campbell

Do not call this place and think you're going to get any information, especially on a Friday after lunch. The staff is very arrogant, then they will transfer your call to a line that keeps ringing and then hangs up. Apparently they think its rude of you to call when they want to start their weekend early. They don't have to work 40 hours if they don't want to because their paid from tax dollars.

Janis S

Beautiful old library, built in the 1920s, with a grand marble column entrance. There are a few more modern sections built on later, but the old portion is stunning. Third floor reading room and other wings off it are gorgeous, with stained glass, mosaics, detailed ceilings, etc. It is worth visiting just for the building & artwork itself. Check opening hours as the library is closed Sundays and Mondays in the Winter/Spring.

Patty Akrouche

As a Detroit native and now a public librarian in Topeka Kansas, this library is the stuff dreams are made of. Heading home in January and plan to have a nice long visit. Can’t wait ❤️

Stephanie Stocking

An absolute gem. Hope to see this incredible building get the preservation and restoration it desperately needs. An entire city block, right across the street from the (also amazing) Detroit Institute of Arts Museum. The marble staircases and intricate detail of the ceilings and murals are stunning. Every nook and cranny deserves to be explored!

Tanya McDaniel

It is wonderful place to go read, use the computer and they have rooms where groups can go and meet, plus the employees are nice and helpful.

Damon Brown
