I am an addicted bibliophile. An American citizen recently moved from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, I now live in the Motherhouse on Stevens Avenue. The Burbank branch of the Portland Library system is a seven minute bike ride that I have taken so often, the bike steers itself to the library (eat your heart out Elon!) As a physician who got out of training at age 30, libraries are a natural haunt for me - from Widener Library in Cambridge MA to medical libraries in Pittsburgh & Seattle. That is by way of qualification for my appreciation of Burbank branch of the Portland Library System. It caters to readers of all needs with an emphasis on programs for children. Jim, the manager, and staff are courteous, helpful and often retrieve books from the stacks. Requests for books not at this branch are usually available in a day or two. There is an excellent system of email communication. To me, there are two great joys other than the availability of books that feed my bibilio-jones. The first is the well tended garden lovingly managed by patrons reflecting the season; the second is the joy of children sprawled on the floor on Saturdays and their beaming parents. Burbank is a marvelous addition to the Deering community. Kudos, five Amazon stars, three Michelin stars for a community library. Peter H. Dohan, MD

Small branch but good selection. Nice children's area. Feels cozy and inviting. Very small fiction collection, BUT as part of the Portland library system you can have any book from any other branch shipped to another branch for your pick up. Love this feature. Staff nice and helpful.
