REVIEWS OF Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library & Museum IN Kansas

Joshua Anderson

A great place to learn a little history and have a little fun. We showed up as a game of 1860s baseball was getting underway. What an interesting game! The museum is currently closed for renovations but they moved enough of the displays to the library to get a good feeling of what a great president that General Eisenhower was. The house where he grew up in was well kept and the originality of all the pieces was amazing. If you are driving along the endless interstate in central Kansas, take the hour or more to visit this place of significance.

Janet Conner

Great place to go and learn about this former President.

Krystal Kaster

Amazing tours, murals, museum, well kept grounds. A fun place to visit for history and military memorabilia.

Larry Wallace

This place is outstanding! If you are a history buff, this is a must go to place. Plan to spend several hours here. The numerous exhibits are top notch. The grounds are exquisite. The tour guides are well versed in their history. This is an excellent place to bring well-mannered young people who would like to learn about American history. It is an excellent place for some of us older folks to revisit some American history.

John Matthews

Just an awesome place...a true American hero

Named the "Best Kansas Attraction" by USA Today, the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum & Boyhood Home is a destination! Learn about Abilene's 5-star General and 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower. Don't miss the Chisholm Trail and the Cowtown that Raised a President" exhibit. The Place of Meditation is my favorite building on this 22-acre campus and no visit is complete without a selfie with the 11' bronze statue of Ike. Fun fact: the Eisenhower Presidential Library is one of 13 Presidential Libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. The Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum & Boyhood Home is also one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas.

Sad Day! PROFILING by Barney Fife security guard, with blessing of his supervisor. The low end guard wanted my children's birth certificates! The supervisor told me that they do this to catch people. Going fishing just a numbers game is how I sum it up. He said not everyone can have a good time at the museum. We were doing great, until this predatory harassment by Buford T. Justice type of retired cop security guard. Now I am not stating my race or anything else, because you may think differently. No one should just be singled out like this. JUST know that this is a common practice at this location. I will say that this happened after the what appeared to be the man in charge of the visitor center, came out to express his political views. He assumed that I was in agreement with him, after he sized me up. He stated his opening conversation remark as, "We know who the HATERS are, don't we!" I asked who that would be. He stated that; "Anyone that votes for Trump!" The conversation was short lived after that. President Eisenhower is stated to have had different views. That is another topic for another time. Could this have been the reason for the shake down? I was given 3 different stories. I was giving a history lesson to my children on General Eisenhower, as we walked the grounds. They were looking forward to returning the next day. We didn't, because of the actions of this guard. I'll admit that my car is worth almost 40 grand. I waited a long time to get it. Point is that they ran the plate as well. The value of the car does not fit their profile. The same guard had stated that, " I had a funny view on racism." I had said in response to an earlier question during a conversation with an employee; that racism has no place in today's society; it never should have and should never have a place in the future. That's a funny view???!!! Another item of concern is when the local city officer stated that this security guard was a Federal Police Officer; and the security guard confirmed this. At first it eased my mind, but I quickly realized that his uniform was unlike any F.P.O. that I have ever seen. I told him that we were done. He said that these officers could work on me down at the station. I asked the officer if we were done, and he said yes. The security guard disappeared quickly. What was this security guard's angle? I won't speculate at this point here. They are Federal employees and not currently police officers wearing security guards uniforms. I got confirmation of this from multiple official sources. President / General Eisenhower leadership protected our freedoms from the NAZI's, and gave us our interstate highway system. He exemplifies what our country can be; and that 1 person can make a large difference. I am truly disappointed about the approach that the people in charge there, have taken. I only wrote this to warn others. Possibly someone can change it.

The Eisenhower Presidential Library, in small town Abilene, is different from most other Presidential Libraries. It was founded when Eisenhower was a general during World War II and was then turned into a museum on his presidency. As a result, it is probably 80% about Eisenhower as a general and 20% as a president. The site also contains his boyhood home and gravesite. Well worth the visit if in the area.

Optimi Lepus

We like Ike, a great man, and a great museum. Large place and has lots of things to see. It would take about 2-3hrs for the whole visiting, and it is worth.

CCA LYNC

Learned a lot more about this president here than at school. Interesting library.

Dickinson County Economic Development Corporation

The Library was a spectacular venue for a Google Workshop that DKEDC was hosting. Doug and the maintenance crew were wonderful to work with, Linda made scheduling and coordinating the dates and times very easy. The entire staff worked diligently to make the day a success. Any change or idea we threw out was tackled with ease. We appreciate you! Thanks for a wonderful experience in a stunning venue.

John Fiebich

Terrific place to visit. Plan on 2 hours to see the entire facility. The renovations to the museum were recently completed and the exhibits are too notch

Casey Godown

Really nice campus to learn about all things “Ike”!

K G

A wonderful campus with fascinating buildings and information!

Max Hotz

This was a wonderful place to learn about Ike. I am now a lot more knowledgeable about his life and amazing accomplishments.

Steve Wilson

Very, very impressive Presidential Library. Site also has a visitors center, musiem, burial chapel and the home of his childhood. Plan on spending a few hours if you want to take it all in. Plenty of parking, nice staff and food size gift shop. Story takes you from childhood all the way through to his death.

Lucky Man

A spacious and beautiful campus includes his museum, library, childhood home and chapel (his and Mamie's final resting place.) I visited in July of 2017 and was vastly impressed with the museum, which serves as a detailed history of WWII as well as the life of our 34th President of the United States. Plans to renovate the museum were underway, so I'll be returning when that is completed. Enjoy the gift shop, the short video in an adjacent room, the wonderful staff, and the beautiful town of Abilene, Kansas. 5 out of 5. Strongly recommend.

Interesting tour through the life of our 34th president

Such a cool experience!

Great place to learn and be inspired by one of the great leaders of our country. The grounds are easy to get around, the boyhood home is well preserved, the library is beautiful inside with marble floors and walls, and the museum will soon reopen with new renovations. The 75th Symphony at Sunset was a great tribute to Ike and our soldiers.

Grand Pa Mike

Enjoyed very much, learning a lot

Andrew Chandler

Grounds were well maintained. The museum did a wonderful job capturing the essence of Ike and his roots in Abilene. A few downsides: 1) I wish they'd have given access to the 2nd floor of the house, but I can understand the fire marshall having apprehensions. 2) I wish they'd focused more time on his time as president.

Ted Asmann

Its humbling to see and walk through the modest beginnings of great man & President. Plan enough time to visit the Museum.

Ethel Mae

Very beautifully built. Well kept and clean. Enjoyed my tour through this place!

Coley Bevington

Wonderful place to visit. Not far off from interstate. Start off with the movie located at gift shop. Graves are located in chapel. Beautiful but modest. We didn't have time to visit the museum or home. Park closes at 4:45. Staff stated museum alone would take over an hour. I learned a lot from our short visit.

Rodney Crissup

We enjoyed our time there very interesting place to see where simple beginning brought forth a president

I hate to admit but I had no idea that Abilene, KS is Eisenhower's home town. I only know this fact after seeing a freeway billboard on the way to the Russell Stovers Candies Outlet Factory, also located in the same town. By the time I made it to the museum, there was about 1 hour left before closing time. Luckily, the (volunteer?) staff guy provided a brochure of what to see based on the amount of time. My buddy and I sped through the museum because there was a LOT of stuff to see/read. The layout was in chronological order. My favorite parts included seeing the actual clothes/gowns that the Mrs. wore and the beautiful jewelry. However, my favorite part of the whole museum experience was touring Eisenhower's childhood home. The actual house is outside of the museum, closer to the parking lot. You get a special ticket when you pay the entrance fee for the museum. It's inclusive. A tour guide walked us through all the furniture and explained all the decorative items throughout the house. It's so neat to see how these artifacts have been preserved from their original state. I'd totally come back in the future if I were in Abilene. $10 entrance fee, which is totally fair.

Dwight D. Eisenhower is one of the greatest leaders in American history. I had read the biography "Soldier of Democracy" (great book!) and I always wanted to visit Abilene. Welcome center staff very friendly. The tour of the home was informative and very interesting with all of the original items. You really got an appreciation of his childhood. The grounds are incredibly spacious, so we enjoyed walking them and visiting the chapel with his grave, and walking to the museum. The museum is well-done and offered detailed insight into his life and the correlated time period in history. We only had 90 minutes, but I could have spent a half day here easily. I left with a deeper appreciation of one our finest leaders. Highly recommend and worth the detour from I-70.

Very nice and well-run. A lot of good information. Easily spent 5 hours and could have stayed longer but they closed. Such an interesting and inspiring man - Very relevant to our times. Ike: "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete highway. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

Laurence Gray

Was expecting more but was let down because of the museum was under remodel. The grounds are well maintained and nicely designed. The same display on the library barely touched on his life. Wish there was more about his presidency.

Tom Terrific

If you are a WW2 buff, this is the place to visit. They have a WW2 exhibit through 2016. There is lots to read and some exhibits. For me it was a bit too much. Comparing it to the Truman library, it came up lacking. It was not as interactive and had too much text.

Jason Wiggins

The Eisenhower presidential library was our reason for visiting Abilene. It has an extensive campus, beautiful park with outdoor monuments and shaded picnic tables. The museum is ready for updates and they are raising the funds. The plans make me want to return. You definitely get a sense of the sacred at the chapel.

Very interesting, every school child should tour this and see what real government is about, working together for the people, not the party. Really opens up history.

This is an awesome visit....the home, the library, the burial place and the grounds are all beautifully maintained.n. The library includes Presidential and military items. Great for history students.

WMW

Excellent facility, interesting, well kept and managed. This was my first visit to a presidential library so I wasn't sure exactly what to expect - and it's likely they are all different. This location includes a visitor center and gift shop, museum, library, chapel and the boyhood home of President Eisenhower. All of the buildings/attractions are located on the 2+ acres of land where he grew up. The library is government managed but the rest of the facility is managed by the Eisenhower foundation and receives no government funding. Everything seems to be very well cared for and managed. The boyhood home was small and due to renovation work we were only able to tour the bottom floor. Our guide was excellent. Interesting and knowledgeable. Definitely worth the time. A short (maybe about 20 minutes) documentary film on Eisenhower's life is played at the visitor center/gift shop. The film was well done and a good length for visitors. The staff at the visitor center are friendly and helpful. President Eisenhower, his wife and one son who died in infancy are buried in the chapel. It is a small but beautiful place to spend a few minutes in quiet reflection. The museum was large and very well done. It is also in the process of some renovation but most is open. A lot of the space is, quite reasonably, dedicated to his war experience and to the second world war but it also presents many interesting details of his life and the times in which he lived. The library is primarily for the benefit of researchers but there are a few things for the general public to see and worth a walk through. There is a short film available in the library explaining just what they do. I spent about two hours total at the site which I would guess is about the minimum needed. Only about an hour of that was spent in the museum as I went through fairly quickly. Stopping to read everything available and watch all of the videos could easily add an hour and perhaps two to the visit. There is a charge for visiting the facility but it seemed quite reasonable. ($9 Senior, military, student; $12. adult; $3. children 5-15) Highly recommended.

bobby

This place is awesome and the staff are very knowledgeable and polite the prices are pretty low to see this place definitely recomend it if you love history

One of the absolute best locations in Kansas. Don't miss this place! The history alone is amazing. The museum has an incredible array of historical items and explanations of Ikes life and career in the military and politics. Also the grounds are a great place to stroll and relax. Visit the Eisenhower chapel/memorial in the SW corner of the grounds for an inspiring and reverent appreciation of Ike. There is also constantly stuff going on here--my kids love the concerts and the easter egg hunt and celebration around easter. Again, don't miss this place!

Linda Lewis

I have three or four of these coins .and I love them .

J Paul Riley

Nicely laid out, even in the heat of summer, not too big to travel between buildings in reasonable comfort. Note, great source for middle and high school kids building a history paper and using as source material. Film was really well done as well. Gift shop is nice as wel .

Barbara Greenawalt

Wonderful place to visit. Wish they had more places inside library for older visitors to sit for a few minutes and then continue the tour. Hoping the museum will when it opens back up.

Mike & Lorraine Cimino

The first slap in the face was that they give discounts only to retirees, active duty or disabled and not to all the have served. My husband served four years in the Marines and was not offered a discount. All of the other Presidential Libraries we have been to offer discounts for all veterans. The museum is currently being renovated so you cannot enter it. You have to go to the library. You walk around on the second floor which is not interesting. Need to wait for the museum to be rebuilt for you to really enjoy it.

Peggy Sharon

Some before my time, but most during my lifetime. I wish that I had another day here.

Wife and I loved it. I thought the video was brilliant.

Greg Thayer

I absolutely loved it. The 24 minute move was an excellent review of his life. The burial site (they call it meditation area) is fitting of his character. Simple and elegant, yet slightly understated considering his incredible legacy. The museum was excellent, starting with plenty of artifacts covering World War II from multiple angles. It has a section for his military career as well as his political and personal life. I was in complete awe of the collection of his foreign medals. I hope you, too, will be wowed by the love he received from the nations of this world. The grounds are well maintained. Now, my favorite; his boyhood home. It is small, so don't expect much in that regard, but the guide was very knowledgeable and told excellent stories and brought real humanity to the house. It still feels like an old farm town home. I expect a trip in time when I go to sites like this and without the 88 miles an hour and 1.21 gigawatts, I was there.

Mark Cragin

We stopped here on our way home from Las Vegas, and we were so glad we did. The only improvement to the experience would have been able to stay a few hours longer. As a student of history I thought I knew a good deal of Ike's history, but I've been disabused of that notion by reading Eisenhower's biography by Carlo D'Este's "Eisenhower A Soldier's Life", that I purchased at the Museum Store. Including notes & references, it spans almost 850 pages, and is thoroughly detailed and entertaining. The site includes the Museum

Very interesting place. Loved the movie! Disappointed in not being able to tour the whole house. Staff RUDE! The man selling tickets telling a school teacher she can’t always be in charge. Ask a question and they act like you’re stupid. We accidentally made wrong turn wound up behind library and thought cop was going to arrest us. Ask him a question and all he said was I don’t know you can’t be here, staff only. Was going to buy a few gifts but was afraid I’d get my head bit off if I went back in.

diana canty

I am disappointed in the newly renovated museum. It is more like a story board with a few artifacts sprinkled in, than a museum of the history of a great president, Dwight David Eisenhower, and his wonderful wife Mamie. Mostly murals, and short movies, the miniatures were cheap looking, there are some great antique stores around with authentic toy tanks, cars, trucks, etc from the time period, no need to go so cheap. Prior to renovation there were 2 levels with an overlook to a WWII tank and a large window looking out to the trees. There was also a room dedicated to Mamie with more clothes and artifacts. These were fantastic visuals and fun. The only positive was the circular world map which lit to highlight the time table of the war around the world. ☹️ I hope they don't renovate his boyhood home.

A must see...

The Dwight D Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum is a wonderful place to learn about the 34th president of the United States. The museum has many artifacts from his life from early childhood to his death. The president's boyhood home is on display in its original location. The Meditation Room is a peaceful and reverent area for reflection. The president and first lady are buried here as well as their toddler son. Behind their resting place is a small chapel area. The courtyard is open and beautifully manicured. The staff in each location are professional, helpful, and very friendly. I highly recommend President Eisenhower's Library and Museum!

Frederick Breedon

Boyhood home was a short but interesting tour. Make sure to catch the 20 minute video in the visitor center. It gives us under 60 folks a good recap of some of Ike's contributions. The museum in interesting, especially if you are WWII history buff. The entrance to the museum appears to change every so often, which keeps it fresh to visitors. Enjoyable museum and a nice small town.

Anne Gibbs

The film and the boyhood home tour were very interesting! Excited to return for the newly-renovated museum!! Polite and helpful staff. We had a nice visit.
