A decent library wrapped in amazing architecture. There's plenty of reviews on here going over the programs and resources here. I won't retread that territory much. Suffice it to say it's selection of books is okay (in many ways sub par compared to many libraries in comparable cities) that really shines from it's incredible selection of classes, programs and media resources. Not many places will teach you how to record and provide a studio, or offer simulators, video and photography studio with in depth classes on all that. What I really love about this place is the architecture. Now I know most folks don't like brutalism. It's associated with horrible government buildings, opressing and darkening city blocks. But I have a soft place for. It's wholly modern and amazing, a brute display of function before form. Done well it's awe aspiring, projecting a unique since of place that makes no pretense towards anything but itself. This building does it very, very well. The raw concrete slices and stacks creating an amazing sense of form that both dominates and blends into the urban landscape. The striations and texture across the concrete confuses and enthralls the eye. From the outside this building looks almost alien, and creates both a sense of fascinating and dread. Inside the raw concrete is exposed throughout. Huge columns and chunks cut through and divide the building logically. In some ways they've tried to hide it and dress it up, usually it doesn't work but in some sections it looks amazing. The stairwell in the back of the building is incredible, the texture and sheer size of the exposed concrete make it both open and claustrophobic. The Children's reading area has hung colorful forms that contrast wonderfully with concrete. The media center at the top has wrapped everything in white, steel and glass giving it a unique modern look. The interior as a whole though has a cold but frantic cyber punk look that wouldn't look out of place in a film like the Matrix or Blade Runner. If you are one of the few people who enjoy brutalism then you have to check this place out. If you like sci fi aesthetic then check it out. It's an awesome place, and one of my favorite public buildings anywhere.
We came from Illinois where most public libraries are the like Ritz Carlton version of Barnes & Noble. There are indoor and outdoor drive-through conveyors with automated scanners to conveniently return books anytime of the day or night, rain or shine or blizzard. The selection & collection of books, CDs, DVD, ebooks, educational toys are endless! We currently go to the Windermere library. It is very tiny with very few books and ultra limited space to sit down & read. Ok fine, if this library is not at par with many public libraries in the country, I can live with that. What I cannot comprehend is why I cannot borrow a book that I was returning for my husband. The librarian said it is not allowed. Please note that we can no longer renew the book using my husband’s library card because it maxed out the number of renewals. I asked if I can just wait for the book to be put on the shelf and borrow it. The librarian checked their system and it does not show the book (she is holding that I just returned) is available in the Windermere library! Really? Fine, let’s assume the book belongs to another branch of the Orange County Public Library System that they have to ship it back to that library. The librarian then offered to have this book ordered and ship to my address. She did not mention if this book is on hold for another borrower, so I assumed there’s no hold. Looking at the big picture, isn’t this antiquated process a waste of taxpayers’ money, to pay for unnecessary shipping and packing of the book, when I can borrow it on the spot without cost? My family was able to do this just a week prior to this incident! I am not sure if only the librarian has some business process reengineering and customer service skills to learn, or is it the system that needs to be re-evaluated so it is not as old as the Windermere library building? One more thing the librarian said when I asked if I can just read the book in the library...she said, “Make sure you put it back on this counter before you leave.” Mind you, this is Windermere, a town with mostly educated/professional people. I am not sure why we have a librarian like this one, treating an educated professional like me so poorly! Just for the record, I was very calm, didn’t make a face, nor had hostility in the tone of my voice while dealing with this difficult librarian. Something is terribly wrong here.
Go get right now a library card!! The Orange County Library System gives you so many opportunities to learn about different things. It doesn't matter how old you are; there are plenty of free classes about technology, art&design, literature, and so on! Employees are very nice and ready to help you!
The Melrose center is amazing!
I love the new Melrose center. Tons of free community events and plenty accessible options for the disabled.
(Translated by Google) A very entertaining and very talented people who can point you in the best reading system you can get, besides the free courses are given all year round environment. (Original) Un ambiente muy ameno y con mucha gente talentosa que te orienta en el mejor sistema de lectura que puedas obtener, ademas de los cursos gratis que se dan todo el año.
Good book selection and has some interesting characters hanging around outside. The staff is very friendly and helpful with any questions you have.
Wonderful place to spend time letting your mind take in all thats available.
Great library!
One of the best libraries I have ever visited! It is great to have an opportunity to get knowledge for no charge and be able to gain access to the latest technology in the Fab Lab in Melrose Center
The library is a great place to hang out and look for great dvd movies.
Great place to visit. The tek area is amazing, they have a. Open studio witch anyone coyld use
Great Selection and availability. The new Melrose center has more technology and instruction than I could have asked for. Free use of a professional recording studio? Yes please.
Very helpful staff.
After serving in the military in uniform for over thirty years and then another sixteen years working as a civilian government employee for the military, I retired to travel across the continental USA in my motor home and see this great land that I served to protect. I have had the pleasure of visiting all fifty states and almost that many Public Libraries. Recently, I attempted to use the services of the Orange County Library in Windermere, Florida. This library (and, I am told, ALL Florida Libraries) are NOT non-Florida resident friendly. Normally, while my wife does her extended sightseeing of the area that does not interest me, I wait for her in a local library where I can listen to CDs, watch DVD movies on my laptop computer and use the Library’s Wi-Fi to connect to family and friends. Not in Florida! Although you never leave the building, you MUST have a Library Card to listen to CDs, watch movies on your computer or even use the Wi-Fi. But, I was told that only Florida residents can apply for a (free) Library Card. Outsiders (non-residents) can purchase a card for only $75.00, which is good for three months. The reason given? The Library is supported by local taxpayers. O.K., so? That is true of almost EVERY Library in EVERY state, but I have never been refused the use of any Library. I’ve had to procure a temporary card or leave one of my ID cards at the desk, but I have NEVER been refused the use of what most Libraries offer. I also have never heard of anyone visiting my state being charged to use our "public" Libraries. This is just not right!!
Excellent!
I have traveled all over the country and visited libraries from Alaska to Florida --- the orange county library system is the best I have ever experienced. It has every service and class you could dream of and grants access to so many technologies and opportunities the community would not have access to otherwise. It is astounding. I cannot fathom how anyone could give it less than 5 stars. This is the best library system in the country.
Wow! What a beautiful, incredible public library! Hands-down one of the best I've ever been in, and I've visited many all over the country.
Such a nice modern building. Full of spaces, kids areas, teens areas n homeless areas too. U can find around half of the library w homeless people eating, using the computers, sleeping or using the restrooms. Plenty of books, cds, movies n much more.
library love.
Always awesome
Job search computer section on 4th floor, home delivery system, and Melrose Place are all reasons I enjoy this library.
Who hell charges to use the computer?just to print out a piece of paper...
As a life long resident of Orlando, I thought it would be nice to visit the library I hadn't been to in many years, but I'm sorry to say it was not pleasant. I was harassed by the staff because I chose to sit on the floor up against the wall for my back and read. I had to do this because all the good chairs were taken by homeless vagrants who were just dozing our outright sleeping. I need something that gives my back firm support and the wall was the only thing other than the chairs that were taken, but NO, its against library policy for patrons to sit on the floor no matter what, however it's ok for all the good chairs to be taken up by the homeless. I'll just go to Barnes & Noble, at least they don't allow homeless people to lie around everywhere and don't harass their customers/patrons.
Full of homeless and smelly bum. How can a library permit this. They spend the whole day there like it is a resort.
Huge offering of books and services
Over bearing staff beware
Ruled staff
The outside is pure concrete, the interior looks exactly like a good library. But the location in the lake Eola park is unbeatable.
HUGE selections, great voting stations as well.
good
This is the best branch in town. The staff is pleasant. The selections are great for books, movies, and music. I always find just what I am looking for. The events are wonderful.
My 5 year old daughter and I are in love with this library. From the historical structure to the wide variety of books, dvds and more they offer. Restrooms are always clean, computer lab in the children's section and 4th floor are great and super clean. Staff is so nice and informative. For parking use the parking garage right across pine st its $2 an hour and it's easy to get in and out. We love this library totally recommend it!
Great people.. great place
This is by far the worst library that I've visited in my entire life. The computers at this location are a mix match of systems and are so outdated that they crash. The computers also need software updates. The staff treat the visitors like they are all homeless. I am under the impression that the reason that this location is not as professional as other locations in Orange County is due directly to the large homeless community that visits this location everyday. Feedback welcome. UPDATED: August 19, 2018 I've never been reprimanded for any offense in this library. However yesterday I was trespassed for one year for briefly dozing off whilst at the computer listening to music.
Good library and many courses. I love this place.
Big. Smells like bums everywhere. VERY Rude staff.
A wonderful library in a great building in a superb location in the city center. A lot of services, you need a separate study. We were on the seasonal sale of old books. They are only called old, beautiful books at a low price. For 9 books they paid 7 dollars in total.
Many resources here. A wonderful public service! Extremely clean!
This is a very technologically advanced library. Many features. A lot can be learned when you have time and dedication . Overall people (staff)have been great thus far. I personally have always accomplished my goals there...
This is the best library Orange county has which isn't saying much since the other locations are small and never have anything good. They have such a large space that you would think they would make use of it and stock it with more material.
Excellent library and it's really clean. One of the best places in Orlando, for sure. They have a great book selection and they are really helpful. Tons of computers for people to use if they want! They also often have free events and free things going on!
5/5/17 Saw the library giving class on introduction of 3D printing 2 weeks earlier. So I went to my local library & sign up for a library card. Drove downtown for the class on the 5th. Walked in & notice one employee @ the checkout, 3 @ the check in, one @ the information desk. Went up stairs another 4 employees all doing nothing sitting behind the counters, and I asked about the class @ 9:30am. They inform me it was cancel due to no one signing up! If their's no sign in the lobby about the class, & all these employees standing their doing nothing. Wouldn't you think at least someone would show up to give a class, just in case someone did show up?Wanted to sit down but the only two chairs in the lobby had a do not sit sign on them, go figure? Between my time and over $10 in tolls & parking, my morning was wasted!
This place is full of wonder and knowledge. Great facilities for members of community. I have spoken several times at the Melrose Center as part of Script Orlando talks and it was an amazing experience every time. This library is a true gem!
Huge Library, wish I knew more about it when I was living there, it has everything you can imagine to educate yourself. Books, videos, audio, and even flight simulators. There’re photography studios but you’d have to take a class first in order to be allowed to book it.
it's AWESOME and a lot of good books for my kids
I am a fan of libraries that have large, UPDATED collections of hard copy books that I can just browse and learn new things. Did not find that here. They do provide access to a large collection of books online, if you’re into that. I also never find somewhere comfortable to sit. They don’t have little nooks or soft chairs or private desk areas, unless you reserve a room. The vast majority of seating is in an open area with mostly homeless people (which are fine, just distracting and doesn’t make me feel like I’m working in a professional environment)—the only other option I’ve found is to sit on a hard chair against the wall (no desk and rarely an outlet)... ironically when I sit there, staff always comes by to let me know there are desks available. The Melrose center seems great, but you have to be working on specific programs to work there. There are a lot of little specific rules you have to follow, which I guess makes sense for such a large organization, but it drives me crazy. Staff has always been incredibly competent, kind, and helpful though. I keep giving this library a chance and hoping something will impress me, but I still miss the more updated, cozy, browsable library from the little town I used to live in. Does seem like there are a lot of great resources here... just not for me personally.
Largest library in the State of Florida. Lots of good resources.
Ok
If you actually LIVE in Orlando, then this library was not intended for you. It's just another tourist trap. Not only do you have to pay to park, but even to use the WIFI you have to jump through hoops. A pin number and a picture for your library card? What, is it attached to my bank account!? If you honestly have work to do, I suggest you go to your local Barnes and Noble, at least you can grab a cup of coffee.
I been to a lot of libraries in Florida and this one is the worst. The attitude of the staff and customer service is juvenile and deplorable. Just spend a day on the 4th floor and see what I mean. They locked all of the power outlets and make everyone sit shoulder to shoulder to charge devices. on a long prison like strip. This place is a joke compared to libraries in Downtown Kissimmee and Downtown Sarasota.
Great place to learn
Excellent
This is the most pleasant and enjoyable library I have ever been to. If you get a chance be sure to take a look at the gorgeous Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology upstairs.
I love our Winter Garden Library. The staff is wonderful, friendly and very helpful. I can't say enough good things about them. Thanks for being there.
A nice library that Orlando can be proud of and a very helpful staff.
Excellent community resource with invaluable tools and services available completely free! Awesome!
A beautiful multi-floor library with so much to offer. It is exciting just to explore find an interesting book and read in the quiet. Even comic book fans can find a large selection, and it is all free!
The staff are nice Don't get me wrong, but there are too little places to sit down and read, the best table booths on the first floor are in an area where only kids 18 and under can go so if you sit there the staff will judge your age and I'm like 20 something, so a decent person would let that slide, not this place I was told to move and no one else was there, so forget this place if you're a senior citizen there's not enough tables and chairs on the first floor so you'll have to go up three floors to read the paper, unless you want to sit in a plastic chair in front of a stage, TO top it all off the tables and chairs are all uncomfortable wooden chairs on the upper floors so yeah this place needs a furniture update badly and no plastic bags to carry books? IT'S FLORIDA IT RAINS EVERYDAY!
I mean ive only been to this place once its really clean no loud noice pecie full i Can get stuff down the staff are nice and yeah
My favorite library. Everything is here. Due to location many homeless. Had some experiences but not too bad. Just keep kids within eye distance. The best resources here.
Best library ever! Great selection of movies and the free WiFi is great.
This is a great public library. Great place to get out of the heat if you're checking out downtown.
The staff disrespect you in every way and there is people sleeping on the chairs that could of been used for reading.
The staff are incredibly kind and helpful. And the library is massive. The learning stored there is incredible
Vast modern library with amazing media center. Staff are knowledgeable, professional and friendly.
Large nice building that doubles for a homeless shelter, don't let your children out of sight or leave your belongings.
Brutal. The library is a brilliant piece of Brutalist architecture, if you believe there can be such a thing. Even nonresidents of the Orlando area would find a tour of their amenities place interesting.

As a disabled person from out of town, this place was crap. After circling several times to discover there was NO parking, other than the public, expensive garage, I went inside. Looks pretty. I had several hours to kill downtown, so I planned on reading, catching up on internet, and generally trying to NOT cause myself pain. Asked a librarian if fiction was on the first floor (my new glasses come in next week and there were ZERO large signs), and received a mini lesson in how to find books in a library! Gasp, its the EXACT same as other libraries! Alphabetical by author, possibly broken down by genre! Once I got closer to the stacks, i could read the signs with the breakdown. Found a book, looked for a place to sit. NOW the fun begins - the ONLY seating is hard plastic chairz in front of the stage, except this cluster of comfy seats and booths in the teen area. NO ONE is anywhere nearby, so I sit there - not disrupting the 'safe space' of the non-existent teens. Get settled to read and get told I have to leave - seating is on the THIRD floor. Or I am always welcome to sit in the roes of hard chairs, since I could easily put my tablet and water in front of me while reading..... Sorry, barely made it in to those seats, not packing my bag to stagger to the thrd floor to see what they call comfortable seating - since two people called those chairs 'comfy'. The one librarians parting shot? 'We can't make it too comfortable or people fall asleep' Like the poor guy sleeping on the CONCRETE outside cared it was 'too comfortable'. I'll go plces that encourage patronage and usage of the space and try to make sure I don't spend a dime on library funding sources!
Very helpful staff. Always easy to find a quiet area.
I love my library system. Huge resource and the librarians always help as if my needs are their only goal in life.
Ugly building, wonderful books. One of the best public libraries I've ever been to, and they have a makerspace / entrepreneurship center.
One of the greatest libraries I've been a member I've got to agree with others about the homeless using it as a resort they use the toilets like showers and they always make you feel uncomfortable staring at your belongings you can't concentrate on anything you are working on.if they're not a member and have poor hygiene the library should have the right to reserve entrance to protect the safety of everyone specially our children.all the branches are accessible staffs are the best they mail books fast and very professional need better security.
The staff at this library are absolutely fantastic. Extremely helpful and always polite despite having to deal with some of the social elements that challenge them on a daily basis. Great job to everyone!
The staff is wonderful, and the facilities are well maintained. I am always able to find what I need and can even order material that's not available for home delivery. With a bookstore, craft room, and digital media what more could you ask for!
(Translated by Google) Excellent place to read, very nice and quiet (Original) Excelente lugar para leer, muy agradable y tranquilo
It is pretty and very organized
Wonderful place to go to work on a computer, to check out a book, or just to chill out. I used to live in Apopka, and the library there was nothing compared to this one. I would definitely recommend it to anyone seeking knowledge. Staff is very helpful, restrooms are amazingly clean, considering the amount of homeless people who go to the place.
Amazeballs Library
Because I was raised at this library
Very nice
I came here last week and i have to say this was one of the weirdest experiences i have ever had in my life. I came in perfectly and got a book from the shelf. I sat down and then i here accoss the hall Mexican Salsa. Yah im for real. They was a stage there and it was very loud. There were people there just sitting and i couldn't even read my book. So i went ARIBA!!!! stairs and still heard it. Its a library like....shhhhhh!!!! They stopped and i was like yayyyy i can read but then they.... came..... singing..... that Cockroach song!!! La cocoraca la cocoAHHHH SHUT UP!!!! And ironic enough i saw (la cocoracha) in la bano.Ay you memo It was huge!!!! The placed same dirty and i left......disgraceful behavior
Great library
This library is amazing. They have so many resources, materials and events for patrons to use.
The tiny tales every saturday morning at 9:30 on the first floor kids section (enter the library, take an immediate right) is fantastic. My wife and I have been going every weekend with our son. He enjoys it and we enjoy it. Both …
Even though the outside looks like the Wicked Witch's castle... this is the best library I've ever been to. The Melrose Center is SO AMAZING! The staff is always very knowledgeable and kind too.
Love it....staff is exceptional..great for kids and located close to Lake Eola..fun outing for the kids
Big movie section
Worst library I've ever been to.
Good selection, attractive interior, distinctive exterior. Friendly staff! Somebody please get Seminole and Orange counties to reinstitute reciprocality - stop the madness!!!
Excellent library
This staff seem disoriented and always on mood. The only thing there good at is harrassing homeless and waking them up. Instead of letting client get their replacement I'd if you aren't from Orlando. But , had them in the system they want to force to get I'd despite being in Orlando for 3 months. Never had this issue in NYC, Seattle, LA, sf or other cities in the usa. The staff and their system need to become more modernize I didn't have the $3 couldn't get my id. Another how can other cities like San Antonio, NYC, miami have 15 mins or connect to wifi without library card but you can't in Orlando what is this 1970???
Vicci and me like going to this library. I don't know if they still show movies. The Wizard of Oz
love this library, between its beauty and its many books
A wonderful place to find knowledge. There are a few unsavory patrons but the always helpful staff is a treat.
Words can't explain how much I love this library.
Beautiful concrete building. One of my favorites in downtown Orlando.
Great place to come and get on the computers and charge yours phones.
It's the best for a reason (actually... many).
Great stuff here.
Continuing to amaze
It was great
*full of homeless. *loud noises: everybody picks up their phones and the employees do NOTHING, even more so, the employees themselves at the Melrose Center (1st floor) are THE LOUDEST, they talk and laugh like they were in a party!!! they should be caged in their own office booth segregated from the rest of the users... people bring their kids to the NO KIDS area, so they cry and scream (employees do nothing). customers talk to each other openly, play music, etc and no one stops them (Melrose Center). *full ground floor dedicated to kids EXCLUSIVELY, but there are basically NO KIDS using the premises, why dont u send them to the 5th floor then!! mostly adults use the premises... *hard plastic / wood chairs makes impossible to sit for more than 30 min. * needs bookrests and stand up tables to keep our laptops at the height of the head (neck hurts after some time). *again: POOR SOUND INSULATION!!! *No security cameras on the premises makes it impossible to relax with so many homeless people around.
Always have loved this place. And love how is keeping with the times.
Great
The best library branch in Orlando! Extremely clean/ organized with ample selection! If you are looking for a quiet spot to read a book during lunch head up to the third floor and sit at one of their tables! I also love the fact that there is a bike rack up front. Great customer service and awesome events to meet and make new friends! I have a library down the street from me but still prefer coming to this branch!
Such an ugly building but its actually a really nice library.
We are so lucky to have such an excellent Library system in our county....I have appreciated the programs and the material they provide for over 40 years!
Huge collection of movies, audio tapes and books and free WiFi. Read many books here, my favorite library to be. :)
Nice place
I grew up going to this library since I was a toddler. I'm now about to be 24 and this library has been an absolute treasure. I remember growing up and exploring this place. It not only has a great selection of books, videos, games and more but it also has awesome places to read. The library it self is fascinating. I remember seeing the tiny dum elvators and thinking of them as doors to different worlds like in the books I read. When I would see this gate outside connected to the library on the second floor I would think of the book called the secret garden. I remember playing in the tiny kids castle looking up at the ceiling and seeing the paper fish. Also going into this huge room with a gigantic clock. When I got older I hung out with my friends in the teen area laughing watching movies, reading books playing games. I am a book worm I love books. I love libraries. They are like my Disney world. From them time I lived in Florida all the way until I was 22 I had been all over it and visited many libraries. This has always been my favorite and kept me impressed to this day. I miss Florida now lol.
It is an amazing library! You’d have to see it for yourself. There is plenty to look at. Please, check out this library if you haven’t done so, already. You won’t be disappointed.
Reading real books is a dying art, but here I can find great books at even better prices. Usually walk in looking for one book and walk out holding 5 or 6.
This was a very nice library cool space. Great exhibits
I love the Melrose center.
It still a lot of homeless people come here!! They better be on they best behavior if not!! They could go to jail or get kick out for a year or forever lol!!! Don,t have no time to take care of somebody grown kids lol!!!!
So I walk in and noticed that all the tables were the homeless sit to charge there phones on the 4th floor are gone. Shows how much they care about people. Just because we are homeless don't mean we are bad. You can't judge 1 person and compare that person to the rest. We are human as well we were and still are a part of society. I swear that all of the staff on the 4th floor are out to get the homeless because they don't like us. We use the bathroom like them,we put clothes on the same way as they do,we eat the same way they do, we have dwellings and emotions like they do. Yesterday I had a guy that was staff come to the table that I was at talking to me as if I was an idiot. I don't appreciate that! Then he held up a sign written in Spanish expecting me read and understand it right I spoke English to him. Who is the idiot now? I want to college for communication skills. And the way I see these people talk to the homeless compared to how they talk to people that aren't,disgust me. They all need to go back to school and learn how to talk to everybody and just stereo type one group just because of. I mean the people on the 1st 2nd 3 rd floor are complete nice people compared to the 4th
I love this library. It offers many free classes/resources. OCLS has given me the tools to start on a new career path. The Melrose Center is AMAZING!
Extensive collections and facilities
It's a very big place that has a wide selection of books, movies, cd's. It has many classes to offer.
As far as being attacked and being disrespected MOST OF THE TIME I am enjoying those whom been very professional with my interactions and transactions with me being a patron. And I thank you all Merry Christmas and happy new year
The place is awesome
