Where do I start with this amazing school? When I was a kid, I learned how to play violin. I never learned how to be a musician or how to perform. My kids now have been taking music lesson for a quite a while, particularly my eldest who plays three instruments. Yes, they can learn how to play an instrument at various studios, school, etc. But the most unique and precious thing about School of Rock is that they will teach your kid not only how to play an instrument, but to be a musician and how to perform. I enrolled my kids only a month and half or so ago (they were previously attending another local rock-type school), and their progress, direction, and excitement about playing has increased ten-fold.
The equipment, the space, the teachers, the students: everything in this school is top notch. My eldest daughter loves the equipment. She says it’s new and it works!!
Now since we are new this school, I cannot comment on the concerts. I have no doubt they will be just as awesome as the rest of it. But here are a few of my observations about the school in general.
Some schools have the philosophy that kids should guide the direction of the teaching and that they should choose what they want to play. This may work with older kids and young adults, but not usually for young kids. Young kids need to build on the fundamental skills they need in order to learn how to play what they want. One of the great things about School of Rock is that the teachers have a very clear plan in place for how your child will progress; the teachers are skilled enough to know what you child needs to work on and where they are at in their progression. This is critical especially for young children who need to have a goal and sense of accomplishment. It is also great for parents who can gauge where their kid as it in their education.
At School of Rock all kids are encouraged to join group lessons. The group lessons allow them to play the songs they are working on in the private lesson in a band setting. The fact that the majority of the children are involved in some form of band based on their level is what makes this school a cut above the rest. My daughter who is 8 years old was previously struggling to find her original excitement in drum playing. When we switched to School of Rock she now plays in a band with the other children and so gets a better sense of what the instrument is all about. The improvement in her playing and her passion and effort has returned. She loves going to practice sessions and she loves practicing. It truly is important for kids to learn in the context of playing with each other. I cannot emphasize that enough. The fun, the education, and the experience of it is worth it the extra cost.
I’d also like to make a shout out to Nate for taking on my 10-year-old bass player who thought she knew it all. He has been amazing with her, tough as nails and really making certain she has mastered the right songs AND the right attitude before progressing any further. As a parent who wants the best music education for my kids, I could not be happier!
