Primrose has been good overall until 10/18/17. Our son’s teacher made the call that he was “lethargic and not himself”, so proceeded to get a temperature which was 100.5. They also said that he might have an ear infection.
He was upset because the teacher had taken off his coat which he refuses to take off after we drop him off in the mornings. Does this really hurt anyone for the kid to keep his coat on? I would presume that a Montessori based school would be more understanding as to why a child would keep their coat on; he keeps it on more for comfort like a safety blanket rather actually being cold. So because he was upset, the school decided it is in the best interest of the other kids to send my son home because of the high temperature and an ear infection.
I actually appreciate the policy because I would not want a sick child to expose the rest of the class. However, there was an explanation for his high temperature. If you have ever been stressed out in your life, you would know that physiologically, you will sweat and your body temperature will go up. A distressed child is no different so his temperature would be high if he is distressed after you take away is safety device.
My wife took our son straight to the pediatrician from Primrose to make sure our son was okay. His doctor took his temperature (with his coat on) and checked his ear for an ear infection. Temperature was 97.6 and the ear was clear. As a result, I called the school to ask them how they came up with their conclusion that my son was sick when there is no nurse or health professional on staff. They informed me that the teacher makes the call and the administration just blindly supports their decision to make the child stay home do 24 hours regardless of what a qualified doctor would say about the health of a child. This does not make sense in the least.
This policy has been abused to “get rid” of a perfectly healthy child from school for a few days. My child is a sweet kid, does not hit or yell at other children. He just wanted to stay comfortable in a different setting outside of home. In the end, we decided it be the best for our child to be nurtured by an establishment with better common sense.
