“Why don’t I come over and take a look?” Gads! Suddenly Garry Mertins, long-time friend, became Garry Mertins, world-class designer. The prospect of a house call was daunting. In reality the visit proved why he is held in such high professional esteem. First and foremost, his diagnosis of a rug dilemma presented a solution more than just a replacement...and within our unspoken budget. So impressed by the profundity of his recommendation I invited him to evaluate modifications that had either been on our minds or suggested by people familiar with the house. The original renovation of our prototypical 1920’s bungalow almost doubled our living space but without compromising the original architectural integrity. A suggestion of more sweeping structural change was made by a prominent architect, however, so despite my wife’s look of panic; I figured this might be the moment to ask. To our relief he discouraged us from making any changes except the conversion of a window into a door to improve our access to a back deck. In fact he suggested that we start pulling up the window shades to the top of the frame so that we could enjoy the beauty of our trees and gardens. Whether one is planning a big or more basic project, that sort of sage direction is a God-send.
