Doctors, nurses, CNA were all incredible in caring for my elderly mother. They were attentive, and exhibited great attitudes. The doctor staff were informative and sensitive. Our family is thankful and appreciative of the excellent care received. We are return customers!!!

I am concerned that I felt pain as my colonoscopy procedure was being performed. It Hurt. I felt like I was moaning but unable to speak. I did say in front of my husband and staff once I woke up in recovery about what happened. But since all was said & done. Did not bring it up again. Now that I am awake more....I would suggest that type of issue be looked into more. Maybe I should of been given more pain medication as the M.D. initially said in front of my husband & I prior to the procedure, "I start off with very minimal versad & fentanyl."

I have a very complocated medical situation, and have been hospitalized here almost every year since 2010. I feel that I am receiving the best medical care that I have ever had. The staff is friendly, and very skilled. T he food is very good as well. Overall, as good a facil city that one can have.

Treated me as if I were an object and as if I were "in the way" so to speak. I had only 3 nurses in my 5 day stay who were great. The others were not helpful and always trying to get me to send my newborn away because I had contracted infection from the labor; they discharged her before me.

When I went into labor I was a nursing student in the midst of a maternal/child care unit and possibly knew way too much about what was going to happen to my body. After my birth experience at St. Mary's I went on to have an OB clinical at Meriter. St. Mary's was much for comfortable and seemed more family oriented instead of just mom and baby. We were very fortunate to have an ideal labor and delivery without medical intervention, the nurses that assisted us through labor and delivery were nothing short of wonderful. They helped me stick with my birth plan and I was able to have a natural birth without any pain medications or other interventions, I didn't even need to have an IV placed! Thank you so much to Lynette of Birth Suites for all of your help and encouragement!

I switched insurance and needed to see a doctor but since I didn’t establish care yet with a primary care physician I was told that I could go to the emergency room for a $75 copay with Dean. I got over a $400 bill in the mail. The doctor and PA time was charged at $20 and all of my labs were covered with my insurance and I asked why the bill was so much and the response I got was “The majority of the balance is for walking into the Emergency Room for treatment.” I was charged $400 because I walked into a building.

I had my 3 kids at St. Marys, didn't have no situations for most part of going there.

Horrible!!!!!! I delivered my daughter here, they took her to the nursery for her hep B injection and when I called to have them bring her back they brought me the wrong child. A boy at that. I looked at the baby and said that wasnt mine and the nurse said to me "look Im floating and its really busy this crib has the room number" I said that it wasnt my child to go back and get me the right baby, she huffed and walked out. She did not return another nurse with my baby did. I work in a hospital and have worked in the nursery before I have NEVER made this mistake with a baby even though we were busy. No excuse! Never again!!!!

Lets just say if you want your feelings invalidated and to feel like your life doesn't matter, check out SSM Health Mental Health in the ER. Go somewhere that you actually get to see a psychiatrist on staff and not the social worker. I will never seek services there again and I am switching all my doctors from SSM and Dean tomorrow. Its sad because I loved my GI. Today was beyond humilating, demoralizing, and feeling like my life does not matter.

Just found out that when my grandmother was in St. Mary’s care, her doctor informed her she’d have 6 months to live. Just a doctor doing his job. What he didn’t need to add is his comment the following day stating he would “read her obituary” before the end of those six months upon reading her charts. Appalling bedside care. This is not how doctors should talk to their patients. My grandma is so terribly upset, she’s inconsolable. I will be contacting the patient relations number and filing a formal complaint on her behalf.

Had major surgery here and the nurses was so amazing that I didn't want to leave! I am due for another major surgery. My insurance has since changed, but I don't give a crap. I'm going back to St Marys!!

The rudest and nastiest staff! The disorganization was ridiculous, we were sent back and forth multiple times for forms that nursing staff was supposed to have. Nurses would yell at the mother and be extremely short with her when her translator wasn't there. They refused our request for a wheel chair even though the mother had been in labor for 32 hours and had just had a c section. They moved her side table (the one that isn't in the way of medical equipment) so she couldn't reach her water for the ENTIRE night after delivery and then nurses would ignore her when she would ask for water. Another friend who miscarried was crying in her room when a nurse came up to her, told her to stop and i joke you not, "Get over it." "This is the worst hospital" is a massive understatement. It is a disgrace and patients are treated like complete inconveniences.

UPDATE BELOW I have never been so disappointed at a health care provider. I am in the process of disputing a bill I received after I went in for a regular check up for the first time with Dr. Russell Hermus. I got charged $270 on top of $385 (regular check up visit fee which was covered by my insurance) because I asked a few questions. They said that because I asked questions outside of the preventive care, "personalized case questions" they charged me $270 which is not covered by my insurance. This has never happened to me in the past. I got 2 vaccines too which they charge way over the amount that my insurance cover, so overall I received a big bill for what it was. I am applying dispute for the 273 portion which has been the worse of all of this. I can't count how many times I was being bounced to different departments. Calling and leaving voicemail and not hearing back and having to stay on the phone over 20 min just to get told to go on the website. Still hasn't found where I can file a complaint. Save your time and money and go anywhere but here. UPDATE: Their patient relations representative contacted me about my complaint. They were helpful and waived my $270 fee. Moral of the story is that there are only physical reviews that are included in your regular check up, and a recent health care changes made it so that anything outside of it can be billed separately as an office visit. I will definitely be more cautions of the questions I ask my doctor during my next check up.

Top notch hospital. Excleent care

Both my children were born there, and I have visited their ER for a variety of reasons through the years, at least half a dozen times. All of our experiences have been positive. St. Mary's strives to stay up-to-date with new techniques and current issues, and their staff has always been friendly and caring. Madison is fortunate to have so many good health care facilities.

This is a review for the ER. Mean Jean at the front desk would not give us water. She was also reluctant to give My friend who hurt her knee (the reason we were there) an ice pack while we waited. Not patient family centered care.

CHOOSE ANY OTHER HOSPITAL! I wish I could only tell you that the the doctors, nurses, and staff are unfriendly and incompetent, but it gets worse. If you try to do your due-diligence as a patient and get a quote for the services, you have to call 18 people until you are able to piece together an estimate of what they think they will charge you. After your visit, your bill comes back over 2.5 times higher than quoted, they put you in touch with a Claims Denial Manager to voice your concerns. They will tell you they will try to help you, when in reality they will NOT uphold their previous quote, they will NOT return phone calls, and they WILL send your bill to collections before they get back to you with a, "There's nothing we can do to help you." These people are the WORST. Please, avoid my family's expensive mistake, DO NOT ever send your family to this hospital. Not to mention, on another visit to this hospital, there was BLOOD all over the bed when I brought my immunosuppressed family member to the ER for help. So unsafe and disgusting.

James Parker

Dr. Tuite and SSM Health are a terrible decision if you are wanting quality care. Dr. Tuite is a pompous a**. He only hears himself speak and after seeing me for the first time ever in the ER, during a nerve pain crisis from GBS, thought he knew better than the other 20 or so other doctors who had already established a functioning pain protocol through trial and error. He left me alone in a room for hours WHILE I was in the middle of a horrible pain crisis. He refused to give me medication based on some misinfomation, which I told him was wrong and then they let me drive home alone without even asking if I had a ride. I was still very much under the influence of whatever drug concoction he gave me. I was extremely nauseous and vomited on the way home and on several occassions almost passed out. I asked them to call my family and they never did. I complained and received an even more condescending letter from their Director of Emergency Services who of course 100% took the side of thier Doctor. She told me it was an episode of anxiety even though she has never seen me or treated me. How ridiculous! She then told several more blatant lies. I will be following-up next with the State of Wisconsin Licensing Department and filing a complaint. I'm sure it will be one of many that they recieve for this place. DO NOT GO TO THIS HOSPITAL!!

viv reeves

Waited 3 hours for a room while in horrific pain. At that point they told me it would 'be awhile'. I was in such pain, spinal fluid built up and needed a spinal tap. I was shaking and crying on the verge of passing out when the nurse informed me that most U.S. E.R. waiting times were 8 hours!! Could have cared less about the pain I was in. Finally called a friend to take me to Meriter, the nurse wasn't even out of the room before the Dr came in to treat me. I would rather be treated by a veterinarian than go back to that hospital. They are rude and incompetent.

Josefina Garcia

Muy agradecida con el hospital y todos sus trabajadores. Por todo lo que hicieron por mi cada vez que estuve ahí. Q Dios los bendiga. Ecelente lugar como hospital.

Mark Hartman

Avoid this hospital like the Plague. Even if you HAVE the Plague. Doctor care so inept it restored my faith in shaman.

Jay Peek

Their bedside manner gets an A+. Do they know what they're doing? = D- Their ER nurses had to be red buttoned that their vitals machine was going off while I was alone. For five minutes! Doctor exhibited "surprise" when I told him I was coincidentally in ER the week before. Hadn't discovered it in St. Mary records. Doctor makes his departing prognosis of IBUPROFEN and a follow-up with my regular doctor. Tells me the nurse will be in. No sign of nurses for 20 minutes. I detach their apparatus from my body and see myself out. Its like they have an administrator with two heads.

I delivered my daughter at St. Mary's. It was a terrible experience, one nurse even insulting my family. I am currently in the ER waiting room, I brought my partner here because it was the first ER that popped up on Google and I didn't realise SSM was connected to St. Mary's. It's not busy at all, yet after an hour and a half he has still not been seen. I would recommend literally anywhere other than here.

Seems to be common practice to KICK OUT patients before they're 100%

We recently had our child there. The care that my wife and child received throughout delivery and afterward was world-class. From the classes, the nurses, the OB-Gyn, and even the facilities and meals were all better than expected. We are truly grateful to have received the care that we did, and from what I have heard about other birthing centers, St. Mary's was outstanding. Such an incredible experience at a wonderful place. Truly grateful to St. Mary's!

Nurse broke my wife's brand new phone during our sons birth and St Mary's has refused to pay for it, still fighting a year later!

Excellent hospital, great nurses, very clean, great maternity ward, I would recommend this hospital to my friends and family.

Two Broads Talking Politics

I had my baby at St. Mary's in March of 2016 and the care was absolutely excellent. I have been in several hospitals all over the country before and this one was by far the most pleasant and attentive. All my wishes for labor and delivery were respected and accommodated as much as possible, even throughout my very difficult and complicated labor and delivery.  The nurses were kind and understanding, especially about the fact that this was our first child and we didn't really know anything about childcare. They even sent us a nice congratulations card from the nurses after we got home! The prenatal classes at the hospital were also very helpful--I especially recommend the postpartum class and the breastfeeding class. My employer gave me the option to switch to a different health insurance company with exactly the same coverage for about $90/less per month, and I refused because I would have had to go to a different hospital than St. Mary's.

On March 10, 2017, my mother was transferred to st Mary's with pneumonia in one lung brought on by aspirating a bit of food or something she drank. She was intubated for a few days and then was moved to another room to recover. It was expected that she would be discharged by the end of the week and make a full recovery. But by the end of that week, both lungs were critically affected (how did that happen?) and the doctors didn't give her much hope. Unfortunately, we don't know what occurred during that week. In fact, they informed us that they thought she wouldn't make it through the night when we weren't there and no one called to let us know. She was in such misery trying to breath with the oxygen mask over her face. Her mouth became very dried out and all she wanted was water. It was obvious by the condition of her mouth and tongue that they didn't swab it with water very often. Unfortunately, my family and I took the doctors' advice and allowed them to make decisions about her care without question. We believed her well-being was in good hands. Bad choice!! They decided to put her on morphine and eventually euthanized her. I think they gave up on her too easily because she was 87 and they just wrote her off. I don't think they did all they could to save her. She passed away in st Mary's on March 21, 2017. Shouldn't have happened!!!

My husband was transferred to St. Mary’s, floor 8, after a very comfortable stay at Sauk Prairie hospital. None of his records transferred and all bloodwork had to be redone. Dr. Furtik and Dr. Johnson were very kind and knowledgeable, but the rest was a terrible experience. My list of negatives is so long but my most upsetting points are listed below: 1. When asking a nurse what button do I push if there is an emergency, her response was “Huh, guess I should probably know that, but I don’t.” 2. When we would hit the call light, it would take 15-20 minutes for anyone to check on us 3. When asking the nurse why were weren’t being checked on, we were told that other patients needed more care and we were “easy-peasy” compared to others. 4. Very few friendly and personable staff members 5. Nadadine (no idea how to spell that) at the front reception desk was such a hag. Someone sitting in that location should have a smile on their face as it’s the first line of contact for someone that is coming to visit a patient. 6. Cafeteria food is absolutely disgusting . All food is prepared in the microwave and tastes like that. 7. Lack of knowledge about patients and how to help. “I don’t know” is not an acceptable response if not followed by, “let me find out.”

Excellent service. Helpful staff. Great surgeons and doctors. Have been here many times, and will always request to be taken here. No student doctors, and if there is a student, you are given the choice to accept or decline the student in place of an experienced doctor. Nurses are usually helpful and kind; however, it’s always a crapshoot as to which nurses are on duty and what sort of day and/or demeanor they have. I refuse to go to Meriter or UW. Both places have sent me home with a pat on the back and a “good luck”. Saint Mary’s hospital has ALWAYS been there to look at all sides of an issue and come up with the best possible choices. They have saved my life, more than once.

Shawn Padley

The ER is a joke. They made my partner wait for 3 hours with a perforated appendix and refused to call Meriter to see if they could get in faster over there. My partner could have died because of their gross negligence.

DO NOT USE SSM HEALTH - Billed $3000 for getting 6 stitches on a basic cut. Hospital up coded my procedure (illegal), refused to tell me upfront of how much it was going to cost before and during the time of the procedure. I had to hire an attorney to dispute the charges. Never been more disappointed with a companies lack of ethics, poor business practices, unlawful medical billing or disgraceful level of customer service. I will be reporting them to the Department of Health for review by the medical board to hopefully prevent this from happening to anyone else.

There are COCKROACHES in this hospital!!! So I'm 31 weeks pregnant, I go to the ER to have the security take me up to labor and delivery because I was having some issues. Well there happened to be another women that needed to go up as well so the security guard took both of us up, we go in the elevator it opens when we arrive at labor and delivery, I happened to look down and the silver part where the elevator door closes there was a HUGE COCKROACH not any old Wisconsin COCKROACH either it was a African flying COCKROACH if your unsure on how big they are look them up, terrifying. I stopped and pointed and said omg you have COCKROACHES here and the other lady and I were freaking out the security guard just laughed and left us with the nurse at labor and delivery. Everyone was laughing about it, the nurse finally then said they've had them there for a couple of years now she said she sees them all the time and when I went to my doctor's office the next day my doctor told me when he goes up there to do surgeries or for a delivery he sees them, also I guess there have been a bunch of reports from patients seeing them as well the last year, so we weren't the only two that seen them. This is a health risk this hospital needs to be shut down for this I mean they give surgeries here and there are babies in this hospital, how are the doors still open is my question??? They can't treat them because the patients in the hospital they can't spray anything. I loved Dean and was planning on having my son there, I've never had any problems with them before, so now i switched my insurance to UW and will have to find new doctors and everything, something i did not want to do especially so close to going into labor 7 weeks. They should have to tell every patient of Dean that they have them... I will NEVER FORGET THE SIZE OF THAT THING, NOR WILL I EVER STEP A FOOT IN THIS HOSPITAL AGAIN!!!

Terrible care after my Loved ones surgery. It was a surgery where she was suppose to go home the same day, but she kept deteriorating as they absolutely did nothing until it was too late. So she passed away. I don't recommend this hospital to anyone.

I used to like them, but not so much any more. While they try to appear chipper and helpful, they don't seem to want to listen to what you're saying to them. Typical medical facility, they're smarter than you, and know better than you, so what you're saying doesn't matter. Even though you know the patient's history far better.

Wonderful care! Kind, responsive, patient staff who can be quite firm when certain procedures must be followed.·······(careful monitoring of liquid intake/outflow) for an example. Grateful our Poppa was transferred here.

We had a wonderful experience visiting our friend at this hospital yesterday. There was a nurse on the night shift at the Psychiatric Department named Carol who was so attentive and caring. She was so professional, caring, trustworthy, patient, kind, and seemed truly invested in bettering our friend's situation and health. We appreciate Nurse Carol's efforts and want everyone to know that there is some great staff at this hospital. Thank you Nurse Carol!!

Not that anyone wants to be in an emergency situation, but today, 9-4 at 530 am we ended up here. Upon arrival the GALS at the front desk were amazing. A special thank you to the elderly man who was on gard. He took my keys, parked my car and came back to me with a valadated parking pass. WHO DOES THAT?? What angels. I hope with the info I have furnished you can reward these people. They along with Chris, our er nurse, went Above and BEYOND for us today... ❤❤❤❤❤ St. MARY'S..

I wish I could give zero stars due to the treatment I received at this ED. I came in via ambulance. I was visiting from out of state and had my back go into spasms. I was unable to walk and the Hotel insisted I go to the ED. Upon arrival I was asked numerous times if I was going to kill my self. Apparently they had me confused with another patient. After I convinced the RN I was not suicidal he left the room. The PA entered asked me questions and prescribed 1 hydrocodone for my pain. A new nurse brought me my paperwork and escorted me to the lobby where I could wait for hours for my sister to pick me up from 5 hours away. I have never been treated like this at an ER. I am a nurse I am not suicidal I am not a drug seeker.

Quality staff. 3rd floor nurses are wonderful, patient, kind. Family recovered from ankle sx and found it to be a good experience.

St. Marys/Dean NOW SCREWS EMPLOYEES! Love the new employee benefits......if you have a spouse your rate is going up at least $1200 and they will now only cover 75% of your employee health costs. You can't even work for a hospital and get decent coverage? What a joke this place has become!

Service quality great but price expensive. I had an appendectomy last month. The surgery went well and I have recovered nicely. However, the price is much higher than the national average for this procedure. I was charged $31,660 by the hospital and $15,852 by the physician for a total of $47,512. While I have great insurance through Delta Dental, I am forced to pay almost the maximum annual out-of-pocket limit on this procedure.

WOW-SSM really messed up w/patient care. Check in today at Fish Hatchery only had 4 receptionists at 9:45 am to check in entire clinic! With the money saving EPIC backwards movement one would think they would have all 6 desks full. Then, waited until 11:13 for provider to come in for my 10:00 appointment. Lab was then 45 minute wait time at 12:00 pm. Waste of my day. Very disappointed with such poor patient care.

We were in the Pediatric unit and the staff was wonderful. Brooke and Linda were our favorite nurses. Only wish was that the rooms were a little bigger and a bed would have been offered for me instead of asking for a cot. Perfect otherwise.

My mother was hospitalized on 11/11 to 3sw. The nursing staff was good and I realize probably overwhelmed with the patient/nurse ratio. Her hospitalist, Jim Lehman, came in at 0600 on 11/12 when mom was still asleep. She has short term memory loss, therefore does not know what he said. There was no note in her chart until later in the day. He did stop by late in the day so I could talk to him. He asked what time I'd be in on 11/13. I told him by 0800. I arrived at 0750 and he had all ready been in. Again, no note regarding his visit and mom said she was only half awake when he was here. Wouldn't it make more sense to document your note when you're actually with the the patient then rely on notes or memory. Very frustrating. PT was in once on 11/12. No idea if they will be back in or not. Overall, we are not terribly satisfied with her care. She's left sitting in the chair with the door shut to her room without anyone coming in for hours. Again patient/rn ratio is probably overwhelming, and I can't fully blame them, it's the health care "industry" of cutting costs and overhead.

I had an amazing CNA other than that my experience was horrible. I went to a Dean clinic doubled over in pain and they made me wait an hour while taking back patients that were not in serious pain who arrive later than me. Dean clinic took the wrong set of tests for my condition and scolded me for not drinking enough water for a blood draw when i had a stomach condition and told me to go to my regular physician. I had severe Gall Stones and was sent by my doctor to the ER right away. Going under anesthesia i was coughing and uncomfortable . After surgery I told them i had not slept in days because of my pain and to wake me up for pain medication. They did not i woke up crying with pain and called them in right away because i had just been through surgery. They asked do I really need any pain medication? and about a half hour later still awake from the pain I heard them talking about me and calling me dramatic and and made an offhand comment about how I was just gonna end up an addict on the streets of Madison. I reached out to Patient Relations three times with no response. My advice never take anyone you love here!!!!!!

Absolutely DISGUSTED with the care here. As a health care professional myself, I am nothing but disappointed in the functioning of this organization. Not only are the nursing staff lazy and full of attitude, the security department is just as much of a joke. The security officer we dealt with was an absolute, unprofessional maniac who made both my family and I very uncomfortable. Screaming at us and accusing us of something that was a complete misunderstanding. To the point of threatening. Nursing staff ignoring the desperate call of a patient needing the restroom, then yelling at them for being incontinent. How could you be in the nursing field if you are "uncomfortable" helping someone to the bathroom? Then tell them to just wait 30minutes until next shift? That is legal neglect! Lack of hygiene. Lack of empathy. Lack of common sense. You call yourself a religious facility? I think you need to make sure your staff is at least semi-decent to be around. I would rather die then have to be taken here, and so would my family. If it wasn't for our insurance only accepting a few places, we would never ever consider it as a place to go. My stomach turns everytime I think of our experience here. How dreadful.

I had a hysterectomy, and my entire care team was wonderful. Kayla and Kris, nurses on my ward, were especially wonderful! They were very caring, always making sure I was comfortable, just really great nurses. I'm very happy with this hospital.

I took my husband to the ER there on 8/4/18 for severe abdominal pain. I had to insist on any testing getting done. They ended up doing absolutely nothing for him, not for the first time, and sent him home telling him to take Tylenol and to see his primary care Dr on Monday. It's not like we don't have insurance, we do, and pay a LOT for it. They have all his records and saw the results of a recent CT scan. It took a primary care doctor 20 minutes today to give a suggestion of what to try next since he's seen at least 40 doctors and had every test, including swallowing a camera and exploratory surgery. If his insurance would allow it, we'd never go back there for anything. Had they taken us seriously, he probably wouldn't have had to miss work today. The nurses showed a lot more concern and compassion than the doctor did.

My grandmother recently had hip surgery and stayed at St. Mary's for a few days and I was extremely disappointed with many things that happened there. Some of the staff was great, but apparently don't read the doctor's orders that tell them not to have her lifting her knee because it would mess up her hip. We had to keep reminding them of things she wasn't supposed to do. The worst nurse was a CNA named Karen who wore way too much makeup and was extremely passive aggressive. She was not only ordering around the other nurses including RN's, but she was asking us to go get her things so that we could help her out. She asked us to go get some blankets because she didn't have time to. I complained to another nurse and that nurse confirmed, it was the nurses job to get blankets and we shouldn't be doing it. She also kept asking any nurse and us to get her things and made us feel guilty if we didn't. She was very rude and lazy. I was shocked she was even an employee when she clearly wasn't capable of doing her job and you could tell the other nurses agreed. Not only that but the most horrifying was that they discharged my grandmother without contacting our family, and my grandmother was transported to a facility in just a hospital gown because we had her clothes and didn't think she was even being discharged until later in the afternoon if not the next day. My poor grandmother just figured they knew what they were doing, but it was horrifying they sent her with no clothes and no contact to us. This is absolutely horrifying and I will be filing a formal complaint.

This is the WORST hospital I swear because of my Dads age they won't do anything. This is the 2nd time this hospital has treated him terrible. I have to find out how to change his hospital due to his insurance. If you have elderly parents DO NOT BRING THEM HERE!!

Adrian DeMaio

BRING YOUR INSURANCE CARD. If you go to the ER for an hour, you will be charged around 3,000 dollars. My family had to file for bankruptcy.

Strongly lacking in care, sadly was used as human pin cushion, hopefully future births will be handled by doctors who look at and care about the birth plan since this was emphasized in their birthing class. UPDATE: I would like to give a hearty thank you to the doctor and nurses who did an awesome job of making the birth go so smoothly the 2nd time around. I want to give a shout out to Dr. Hotujec, RN's- Brittany(birth suites)only took one poke, Beth (for ultrasound), Gabriella (hope I spelled that right), Meghan (very helpful), Michelle (amazing on night shift) and Alissa (gave excellent tips that helped tremendously)

Cardio thoracic surgery and unit have great staff and docs. Interactions with everyone was professional and friendly. I felt that everyone we worked with really cared about my family member and spent plenty of time explaining what was going on every step of the way.
