REVIEWS OF Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital IN Virginia

I don't like to leave negative reviews but I have to tell the truth. I was very disappointed with the entire process of my breast reduction surgery at this facility. To start, I did my pre-op labs, pre surgery registration, and surgery here. When I go for my pre op labs the registration representative asked if I wanted to do my pre surgery registration (at the same time) so I don't have to do it on my surgery day. I say yes that'd be great because I'm scheduled to be here at 530am on my surgery day- the less I have to do that morning the better. So we go through the entire process, she tells me I'm all set and for my surgery day I'll just check in and wait to be called back for surgery triage. On surgery morning I find out she didn't enter any of my pre surgery registration so we had to go through that process and I was advised to pay a $290 surgery co pay! Now my insurance company didn't mention this and neither did the pre registration clerk so I am shocked and appalled but to tired to argue and they wouldn't perform the surgery without it so I pay and go back to surgery triage. A very sweet lady walked me back to a triage room and advised to put on the hospital shirt and here I waited over 30 minutes for a nurse to even acknowledge I was waiting there- in a cold room no less. Once the nurse finally came in she did apologize and asked if I wanted a warm blanket. Another nurse came in and advised she'd be doing my IV. Now I've had IV's a few times in the hospital but never one that hurt this bad and the nurses reply was that's going to leave a bruise and simply walked out (one week later my arm is still black/blue). At least the first nurse asked if I wanted a warm compress on it to help with the pain. The anesthesiologist comes in after and is very thorough and professional. Once I make it out of surgery (woke up 15-20 mins after surgery) a different nurse was treating me and was very sweet and professional. After I waited awhile for a volunteer to come get me and move me to post op triage the receiving nurse was nice but there was some confusion about my take home prescriptions and more waiting to get that straightened out. We finally leave around 1:50pm with two filled prescriptions in hand only to get home and I begin feeling very nauseous after taking my assigned meds. FIVE hours later the hospital calls and says there was one more prescription found in the outpatient surgery box for nausea for you, we can call it in-Ugh. Three days after my surgery the hospital calls asking how everything went with surgery and my care at the hospital. I explain everything and he says I'm sorry you experienced all of that and that's it. So needless to say, I won't be scheduling a surgery at Virginia Beach General Hospital and do not recommend this facility.

Went there for labs (pre-surgery) have a great experience first when checking in the clerk went above and beyond to actually check me in for surgery Then at the lab the technician was very competent and personable-she seemed to actually like working there Overall great job I recommend you to friends and family

I don't even know where to start with this review. One star is too generous for this place! We were camping in Virginia Beach when my 14 year old daughter dislocated her knee ( completely out of socket). The ambulance took her to this hospital. Not only was the facility disgusting and dirty, with dried blood spills on the floor and the syringe storage box was clearly not cleaned in a while (see pics). There's so many violations that took place within our 3 hour ER stay. To start with, the nurse who administered my daughter's meds through her IV, was vigorously wiping his nose with his hands at the desk, then came in to administer her meds, without gloves, and not sanitizing his hands. He didn't clean the IV line with an alcohol wipe before injecting her pain meds. To follow, the doctor didn't order an x-ray before popping her knee back in place, however he DID order it afterwards!! Defeats the purpose. When the xray techs came to her room, one tech had to grab a smaller lead vest/ apron to fit my daughter. Before she came back to the room with it, the other tech already took the x-ray, without protecting / covering my daughter with the lead vest . I know you can't always choose your hospital, but if you have the choice, I urge you to stay clear and far away from this horrendous place. Never again!

Went to the ER on a Saturday afternoon, early evening, for stitches. In and out in an hour. Staff was great. I would recommend VB General for less waiting time in the ER. I've waited in ER at Leigh and Princess Anne for as much as 2-3 times longer then VB

Just came back from the emergency room. This hospital is speedy, clean and the night staff was mellow and extremely friendly. I'd give it 5 stars if I knew that the staff on day shift was the same.

I went to the ER in December with blurry vision and possibility of a sinus infection. After being judged by the check in staff for not coming in immediately after my vision went blurry and waiting 3 days, I had the pleasure of waiting 45 minutes before I saw a doctor. When the doctor arrived I explained, that I’ve been having issues wearing my contacts, one of my eyes is irritated and I think I have a sinus infection. He basically told me, that they don’t have an eye doctor on staff at the moment, and that I had an optical migraine and he thinks I need a CT just to make sure I don’t have a tumor that causes the pain. Ohh and my eyes look fine, no signs of infection. The CT showed clearly that I in fact had a sinus infection and the doctor choose to give me no medication and handed me the discharge papers. After being charged for over $600 from the hospital, I had to go to an ophthalmologist and my primary care physician so I can get eye drops for my eye and antibiotics for my sinus infection. Thanks Sentara, great patient care!

My mom has been in this hospital two times over the last 3 weeks. The building is clean and bright. The staff have been very helpful, the nurses and support staff are friendly with my mom and take time to explain everything they are doing. Great Experience.

Went to emergency room Only saw a nurse that took my blood pressure. Was charged for a person who never saw me and clearly didn't even know what I was there for. Called and got no help going to file a dispute with my insurance they lucky I don't call the news or maybe the news will read this who knows good luck anyone going here

First time living in Viginia this hospital is thee worse. I was colds sled for a blanket didn't get it. Had the flu asked for water three times still didn't get it. Lady across the hall machine was going off for hours and she asked for it to be stopped and no response. My 6 month old had the flu they wanted to do a Catheter we didn't agree but they still tried and the nurses didn't have a clue what they were doing my husband and I put a stop to it and they then gave her a pee bag that they should have gave her in the first place instead of putting her through that pain for a uti that she didn't even have. They suck they are rude and just give you drugs and send you on your way.

Admitted for asthma attacks, treated wonderfully. Constant assistance, never left alone. They did everything possible to find out what was wrong. Stellar staff and doctors!

Another admittance on Monday may 20th. Started in the e.r. taken by ambulance. Admitted onto 3 west. My favorite pod on the 3rd floor. I was treated with respect and with wonderful care from every nurse and care partner. NoNo complaints whatsoever. Im here alot so they have become like my family. I broke my ankle trying to get from the bedside potty to my bed and idk how that happened but I'll be ok. The food was even delicious. I am home now resting comfortably. Ty to 3 west for being so great.

i HATE this hospitals er department. i can only pick out one elderly lady, (didnt know her name) a nurse named kathy, vanessa, fatiema, john that were very nice. the emergency room doctor on duty had black hair, brown eyes and was a complete jerk off who behaved like an unprofessional 12 year old pubescent little girl. The nurse who was in medium blue, blonde hair (dont know her name) was also a total rude twat but that one doctor was legit satanic spawn. I asked what my rights were and requested to refuse medical treatment, did not want to even be admitted into the ER and asked for details on my condition and what my rights were and found I had been deemed as possible suicide. As an adult who is married, supporting her own family financially and well over the age of 18 I think I should have full rights to sign myself out of care and atleast be fully informed on everything going on and get home to my family as soon as possible!!! The man was so ridiculous, Im not easily angered but he should be FIRED.

grndayfrk1 Gail Elias

If I could give this hospital half a star I would. It is not so much the care, but the way the treat the patients family and we are talking ICU over here.

Tara Brinkley

The entire staff was warm and caring.

Awilda Marcano

The service from the health care in the emergency room is a complete nightmare !! You can actually die before you re actually called and seen by anyone !!! Worst Hospital ever !!!

Audrey Lewis

I was an inpatient at this unit for about a week. I am very concerned about the numerous lapses in care that I noted, most importantly those concerning HIPPA, med administration, observation, professionalism, and nutrition. There was notably understaffing and overutilization of available and willing staff. Very dissatisfied.

I love the hospital years ago I don't know now

Jamee Mincks

My father was in ICU here after a stroke and they treated him with kindness, respect, dignity. I traveled from Florida to say my good-byes. If my family and I lived nearby, I would choose this hospital for anything medically necessary... Thank you to all the staff that took care of my father. He is dearly missed!!

Marilou Auer

Right now my daughter is in the lobby of the ER crying in pain waiting to be seen for possible appendicitis. People who came in after her have already been taken back. I'm on the phone with them now and they are defensive but apparently they are going to take her back. She has been waiting, and crying, for an hour now.

I went in 2 weeks ago due to throwing up. I was told I had a UTI and mild HG. Then sent home with rx + anti nausea. Go back 2 days later and I'm told I do not have a UTI and to disregard the antibiotics and sent me on my way with MORE anti nausea medication. I take the anti nausea medication. They never cultured the urine! 1 day before my appointment with my obgyn, I lose the baby. 4 days later I bust out into a fever of 102. Get hospitalized for 2 days and come to find it it was my UTI! I'm now on 2 different antibiotics. All within 2 weeks. I will never recommend SENTARA to ANYONE. I have met demons.

Was laying in the emergency waiting room after girlfriend broke her arm after driving all night and rude security guard said I couldn't lay down on the couch at 5:30 am and was a total jerk to me. Wow, glad I wasn't bleeding to death. Last trip to this dump. Rude people and hope I never set foot in this place ever again.

The people here were RUDE AND SO FOCUSED ON RULES THAT when someone in registration told me the wrong thing it turned into my fault and my burden. If you are a single parent and you have your child with you they will refuse treatment. THANKS SENTARA VIRGINIA BEACH...NOT ONLY DID YOU UPSET MY 6 YEAR OLD SON AND MAKE HIM FEEL LIKE IT WAS HIS FAULT MOMMY COULDN'T GET TREATMENT, YOU HAVE NO RULES IN PLACE TO HELP SINGLE PARENTS AND THE IGNORANCE AND STUPIDITY OF YOUR AFTER HOIRS STAFF IS TRULY UNPRECEDENTED!!!

My dad was admitted and fell at this hospital and broke his hip, they made him continue PT for 2 weeks as my dad was screaming in pain, making him get out of bed using a walker, and had no knowledge that his hip was broken until 4 days before he died, it also takes about 24 to 48 hours to have 3 min conversations with doctors

april Jordan

I was seen today at the ER. GREAT customer service from the time I walked in and until the time I departed. My nurse was extremely nice and very helpful. The only concern I have is the doctor didn't seem to listen to all of my concerns and that's how people get misdiagnosed and have issues that go untreated. Other than that, this place was awesome.

Robbin Fulmore

This hospital is great! I have been here for major ER falls with broken bones and when I fell the second time, I asked to be taken here. There are so many PAs that treat you before you see the physician, but they are highly knowledgeable and all staff, drs. nurses are extremely caring and attentive to your individual healthcare. I recommend anyone to this hospital.

Horrible experience. Rarely came to visit and check on me. Never again worst hospital!!!!

Was transferred here from the ICU in ECNC. Stayed in the critical care unit for 10 days. Outstanding care. The staff's compassion level is something I'll never forget.

The people that work here must be the most simpletons of doctors and nurses I've came across. They're trying to charge me over 1000 dollars for a visit to The E.R. when They literally did nothing for me. I came in with a busted lip ( I mean busted) from being clumsy and I thought I needed stitches but they told me it would heal since it was falling off my face but then I asked for something for the pain in which it hurt and was really swollen for a whole week and all they gave me was this generic so- called numbing mouth wash which was of no help at all. They are crazy trying to overcharge for no services.

Hands down the worst hospital ive ever been too!!! The staff is lazy, and the doctors dont care enough to put the orders in for meds when they admit you. So now I've been in my room In pain for 45 freaking minutes and still no response from the dumb ass doctor. I wish i could give it less than one star

Beam Me Up Scotty

What a hell hole. This is not medical care. It just isn't. Gross side of humanity consistently on display here. I love being shaken down for money while I'm sick in the ER. Super classy and great fun. Thanks guys!

Sara Lyn

Want to be treated as a number and not a patient? Then this hospital is for you! The PA had labs drawn and after he concluded my liver enzymes weren't high enough to warrant an emergency I was discharged. The only reason I saw the actual doctor is because I was literally mid-vomit when handed my paperwork so I asked to see him. He didn't examine me or anything. Just learned against the wall and acted like I was bothering him. He then told me there's a shortage of morphine so I can't get any. I didn't even ask for pain meds. I understand there is an epidemic going on in this country but some of us still need help. The only nice thing I have to say is the nurses were excellent.

My father just passed away after an unexpected month-long stay in both this hospital and Windermere. The care he received at Sentara Virginia Beach General was largely mediocre and misleading, influenced by impressively poor communication between doctors, illogical moves around the facility, and no sense of accountability from those overseeing his situation. However, Dr. Kim and the ICU team were incredible and we wish Dad had been in that quality of care for more than just his last 5 days. We have yet to hear of a proper diagnosis and are hoping his final test (a liver biopsy, why did they wait so long to take this critical test?) might provide some defining results in the coming days. Despite confirming that his issues were related to the liver as early as September 20, doctors wouldn’t take action to help his liver directly. They were treating his symptoms and not the source of his problems, as they claimed they couldn’t start addressing the liver until there was proper diagnosis. Eventually, the doctors said he had cirrhosis (non-alcoholic related) but wanted to do more tests before treating. A day later he had his 2nd blood transfusion and the liver biopsy, and he passed away 24 hours after that. It’s hard to look back and think about what we could have done differently as a family, but when it’s happening it doesn’t feel that you have enough power/knowledge/ground to speak up for a loved one to question the process and decisions that doctors make.

I actually MOVED to a different neighborhood in Virginia Beach, hugely because of this "hospital". It's an absolute joke. See my pictures of my many horrifying injuries resulting from this hell hole. Oh that's right, you can't. Sentara deleted them. The police told me I was not assaulted. Officially. Then refused to document my injuries. I objected to all of what caused these injuries, I guess no only sometimes means no. Noted. Where have I become familiar with that concept?

O Brownie

The PA-C and the nurses, and representative at the registration desk were all nice. All 5 women who help take care of me,I want to say thank you!

Ashlyn Baker

Did not have a good experience, to say the least. Some of the workers were nice, and understandably busy with the insurmountable number of patients coming in that night, however, my boyfriend and I waited for hours while I was in a lot of pain, experiencing both abdominal and back pain. I couldn't understand where my pain was coming from and was also found to be anemic from my unknown condition. After having spent the night and receiving a lot of tests and two blood transfusions, the doctor studying my condition concluded that I was "o.k" and promptly discharged me with pain pills. I went home still in incredible pain and still no answers as to why I was feeling that way. This went on for another week until my parents decided to take me to the Portsmouth naval hospital. There, the doctors did a thorough check and found that I had a 6in tumor in my uterus and that it was causing all the pain and attaching itself to a blood source, thus making me weak. So in conclusion, I cannot say I can trust the people at Sentara hospital simply because they allowed me to go home with a life threatening tumor in my uterus all while telling me that I was "fine."

Ma Dude

THE best of the Best (for Virginia) which equals terrible.

Took great care of my wife and daughter. Friendly nurses and professional doctors. Other reviews are bullshit

My friend tried to overdose. After not seeing the psychiatrist after almost 8-9 hours, they finally came in, asked her a couple of questions, and while she was still loopy and high from taking her pills, released her at 2:30 in the morning with NO transportation, NO contact, NO guests waiting, because we assumed that they would release her around 7-8 in the morning. She walked around in the rain for almost 30 min waiting for Ubers and Lyfts. She finally called me, and I found her down the road at Colonial inn, still so high that she was slurring and couldn’t see properly. Complete negligence on their part, absolutely do not recommend if it is an urgent case of mental health.

Honestly... don’t go here. I have insurance and even with that we still ended up owing them $1200 ... For the emergency room that is. I still don’t trust their business ethics and will not go back because I don’t want no shady extra payment for a specific doctor or nurse or something. Or for certain tests.

My husband has a conic illness "cyclic vomiting syndrome." He has been in this emergency room and admitted to this hospital so many times over the past 20 years it's crazy, the first 10 years the nurses knew us by name. Over the past several years he thankful does not have many episodes, but when he does he risks his health by staying home and suffering for days instead of going to the hospital because good/bad care is always a toss up. Today an episode came on very quickly and it scared me so I took him to the ER, they never gave him an IV of saline solution (pretty standard for someone throwing his guts up) they gave him medicine but rushed us out. They treated him as if he was a drug addict looking for a fix, this is not the first time they have behaved this way. 20 years ago there was no literature on CVS now they hand him 7 pages of paper explaining it. My suggestion is they keep the paper and READ IT THEMSELVES! To end the episode he needs meds to put him in a deep sleep for the nausea medicine to be effective. Really very simple. When I asked why they were rushing us out and explained he needed to sleep to end the episode the nurse said they couldn't just let him sleep there, understand this is only 20 minutes after a second dose of meds were given. He was so out of it he couldn't even sign his name right on the check out forms! Her actions had me hearing ...Bye Felicia! We will go to Princess Anne next episode. The one time we went there the doctor was amazing! He gave my husband the meds I know work without the arrogant or suspicious attitude.

If you go here for a mammogram you will get a bill from Hampton Roads radiology (which makes perfect sense) and then you will get an astronomical bill from Sentara because it’s their facility. I have amazing insurance and owe Sentara in excess of $500 for basically breathing ‘their’ air. RIDICULOUS. Also, I ended up with a male doctor and was not asked if I had a preference or given a heads-up/ alternative options at all. I will not be returning and advise others to research other options like Mid-Atlantic Women’s Care.

While we were on vacation our 11 week old got sick. We took him to the emergency room. First and foremost I've been in healthcare for over 13 years. Major HIPA violations included: Checking our baby's vitals and weighing him in the waiting room area for the whole waiting room to see. No patient privacy at all. It was very embarrassing because they did not use a pediatric scale. They weighed my wife holding him and the weighed her alone and subtracted her weight from the total?!? I have never seen practices like this. You'd think that they would immediately triage a baby at 11 weeks old with a fever of 100, they haven't even checked his temperature with his vials, instead we are waiting in the waiting area and it's been over an hour so far...can someone explain to me this hospitals practices?!? The nursing staff could use retraining for their smart comments. Tim, Emergency Room Physician Assistant was very good! He was very detailed and provided top notch care to our son! Tim is a very good professional! I give Tim 5 stars!

Make sure you ask for an itemized copy of your bill when they send it to you. I requested an itemized copy of my over 1,400 bill a month ago and have yet to get it. The lady on the phone said "why do you need it?" Uh? Maybe because when you buy shoes they give you an itemized copy, when you buy groceries they give you an itemized receipt? I am sorry but I will not pay a dime until you tell me what you are charging me for. That's not how this works and this is why we need a universal healthcare system so companies without caps can't take advantage of the patient. I was pregnant and the second I entered the hospital they told me they don't take care of pregnant woman at this location. I was suffering from at the time was gas but I didn't know for sure. They ended up taking me anyway. They lay me down on the "gold throne bed" 1,400 "gold throne bed" and put a cuff on me and did a "Ultrasound" which the doctor had no idea how to work? Anyway for 1 hour in the hospital they did nothing and charged me that outrageous amount and damanded payment in less than 30 days? Without proof or evidence on what they were charging me for? Yeah until I see verified charge I won't pay a dime sorry and this countries medical system is seriously flawed and this kind of charge without explanation should be illegal. The "correct" hospital we ended up going to afterwards sent me an itemized copy of my charge and I happily paid that and they were the ones who "correctly" identified the problem. Main point unless you are dying don't come to this place. It's filled with uneducated doctors and clowns for nurses.

mary sil

My husband was transported by ambulance to the ER for a back injury. The very young and green ER intern was quick to drug him and send him on his way. After several hours of "fighting" him to allow my husband admittance to the hospital the resident Dr came in and spoke to us and advise us he would try and grant that. My husband was moved to 3rd floor and received excellent care. And was discharged two days later. Overall this seems to be a wonderful hospital, I feel the ER medical staff would Benefit from an inservice on bedside manner.

all the 5 stars are probably the employees who works here because I dont see any reason to give that much stars to this place.

The Nursing Staff is very kind and helpful. the physicians and laboratory are worthless. they put my deceased wife through much unnecessary suffering due to their cavalier attitudes. My wife waited 4 hours for an emergency surgery to get 5 minute blood coagulation test result prior to surgery. I had to beg the ICU doctor to call the lab for results. The nuero-surgeons are not even on the staff. They are free lance doctors that come in to town for a week and leave. You get a new doctor every week. Pitiful. Go somewhere else if you need something more than routine health care.

Dahl Jones

Very kind, helpful, if u call them because u need something they come then Avery clean

don't call them and expect for these people to know what their doing. they were showing me like, "we don't want you, we're already making ton of money without you.." kind of attitude. no wonder they only have 3.0 points on their review which in my opinion it is way too high for their quality.

George Lucy

I went here with chest pain while going on vacation. They did an EKG and blood test and billed me FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. The bills came from out of state doctors. My insurance company even told me this was the biggest bill they have ever seen for such a visit. Thanks for the heartburn mixture.. what a joke.

It has come to some customers attention that Sentara is charging and extra fee to your insurance company for just walking in a Sentara building. ie. walk into 1080 first colonial rd to see a dr and your insurance company is charge a separate extra fee for you going into a Sentara building for a consultation. Write your letters to Elwood (Bernie) Boone President of Sentara 1060 First Colonial Rd. Virginia Beach

Intentionally rude and a lack of compassion. I recently had an ambulance transport to the emergency room at Sentara Virginia Beach, where I had a short stay overnight. I was incredibly ill with an accute reaction to food poisoning. The staff of nurses and aides that rotated through the night were merely just going through the motions. With the exception of one nurse, all others were absent-minded and lacked compassion; it was de-humanizing. Lots of standing around and talking, and very little of caring for the patients that occupied the ER that night. I had to remind them several times of what I needed before there was any action or care. I was very polite and apologetic throughout the night, and tried not to be a menace... and was truly appreciative of the help. However, I was continually met with rudeness. I only saw the on-staff doctor once, for nearly 5 seconds. I was suddenly discharged at 7am the next morning, although I was unable to sit up and too weak to care for myself. I was traveling on business, and had no family or friends to help. They handed me prescriptions to fill and started to shuffle me out the door. I explained that I could not drive or get the prescriptions filled, and asked if I could stay until 9am when the in-house pharmacy opened. They said no. I asked if they could dispense a few doses of each to get me through the next 2 days until I get home to fill the prescriptions. They said no. I don't understand, I'm not capable of caring for myself and I've explained that I'm all alone, and I don't have the ability to continue the medications as prescribed.... yet you're kicking me out? Isn't this a liability for the hospital? The ER was quiet... only a few patients, it's not like I was taking up much space. But.... I was repeatedly told that "it's not like you're 95 years old; you're young and healthy enough to care for yourself". I wasn't coherent; couldn't sit up, walk, or stand.... yet I'm "healthy enough". So they wheel me out to the ER waiting room in nothing but a hospital gown and I was told to call myself a cab. I was facing a wall and sat there for 20 minutes while I waited and no one came over to check on me. The taxi driver finally came in and wheeled me out to the car, in my hosptial gown in 20 degree weather. I returned to the hotel I was staying at and barely managed to take care of myself for the next 2 days until I was able to manage a flight home where I would really receive the care and attention any human deserves. It's the lack of compassion that upset me. I felt that I was garbage, thrown out the next morning. No kindness or caring from ANY of the staff members. The on-staff doctor was actually the worst of them all. It's so disheartening... not sure I understand why they've chosen this field if they lack a single kindness in their heart.

My moms surgery was at 1230pm two hour surgery. At 9:30PM we are still waiting on a Bed for her. This patient treatment is unacceptable. When did hospitals start overbooking surgeries to the point that they don't have a bed for a surgical patient. My moms surgery was very invasive she has stage 4 cancer. No matter all patients matter regardless of the care they need. We essentially sat in the waiting for hours with no updates. Countless families came and went before and after us as we waited. Yes she has full medical coverage, billable coverage! Obici is by far the best hospital in the area. I will avoid this hospital even if she has to change her oncologist. The staff has been great in recovery they have no control over the rules of this money machine. If money was not a primary factor the Surgeries would not be overbooked. We are outraged and a $5 food voucher for the dirty cafeteria will not make this right. 945pm recovery has announced that mom is coming to a second floor room they notify the second floor nurse at 9:15pm. We finally get to her room guess what they roll mom in to move her to her bed. Even I can see this bed has issues. The foot of the bed is clearly broken the mattress is flat in every area accept the foot of the bed. Finally after two nurses play with the buttons they decide let's get a different bed! So they move her around in the tiny room and find another bed and move the broken one out! Why not be proactive and address that before the patient who has waited all day arrives? We are in shock!!! 1033pm mom is finally settled in her room which by the way is dirty! I've taken the bleach wipes in the room and wiped it down with gloves on. Mom woke up and asked me if this was a storage room. Later she asked one of the nurses was it a store room? If I could I'd attach a picture I took. The staff is doing their best Gloria in recovery Pat on the second floor and his trainee and moms two nurses on second floor have been awesome. Day 2 6/21 @ 3:20pm we are here to visit Mom today. I cared a good tray for her back to the nurses station. As I walked away a male nurse (who had just helped my mom move in her bed) was making a very negative remark out loud to another nurse as he wakes away. His words were and this is a direct quote " this is the most complaining and whining floor I've ever been on" what!? These are cancer patients! Battling a disease his comment speaks volumes in regards to how my mom was forced to wait last night. Day 3 6/22 at 1:30am. I'm awakened by a call from my moms cell phone. Mom is telling me they are trying to take her at 1:30am for a CT scan!!! What!? It's 1:30am, the nurse claims and I quote " she's confused when I woke her up she thought she was at home in Portsmouth " excuse me but if you were 77, with stage 4 ovarian cancer, recovering from a full hysterectomy and on a pain pump for meds and no solid food in three days you might be somewhat confused to. Again this money machine is at work after her family has left for the night. The nurse then says to me (she became argumentative) well she hasn't pressed for pain meds since 8pm. That's not true because I pressed for pain med at 9:30pm when I left for the night. Once they tell a patient they are being released expect to wait at least 4 hours, while the staff all try to get on the same page. Each discharge took over 4 hours the admin side was very disorganized. The right hand had no idea what the left hand was doing or had said. From the doctors writing the wrong orders to the care providers not knowing what's going on it was horrible TWICE!!!

Emergency Room doctors treated my wife like a drug seeker, while missing a 1-centimeter kidney stone. I recently took my wife to this hospital for treatment of excruciating back pain. Because she had hip surgery six weeks prior, the attending physician assumed that she was just looking for pain medication and attempted to discharge her without even bothering to do an examination. One of her legs was non weight bearing at the time; since we live on a second floor apartment, I objected to this. This caused the ER doctor to get an extremely bad attitude from “having her judgement questioned” and refuse to reconsider. Only after I talked to the charge nurse was her care turned over to an orthopaedic doctor. The ER missed the 1-centimeter kidney stone that was causing her so much pain. It was later found by a different ER doctor during a second visit on Christmas Eve, two months later. How is a physician with an attitude problem big enough to cause her to miss something so routine (and dangerous) still seeing patients here?

The Great Aeps Show

I have been here and personally witnessed them running out of bags for fluids, running out of pain meds, staff having no idea what the last person just administered. Then I’ve been there and seen great doctors. You never know what you’re going to get and that scares me. Most recent visit. Went to the ER and had 3 xrays to my wrist/hand. Nothing broken. They sent me on my way. Spent 2 hours waiting and was seen for 15 minutes, tops. Then sent me a bill for $1,300.00. That is not a justifiable charge. It’s being taken advantage of.

I was seen Saturday night Sept 9th 2017 for abdominal pain and fever, I had a very kind and thorough Dr. who ordered labs, and a CT scan, the whole staff was very professional, prompt, and extremely compassionate, it was a very positive experience.

You know... there’s a lot of chatter in the news these days about going to the doctor being bad for you, but I don’t trust the liberal media. Whenever I am seriously injured I seek medical treatment. God bless Sentara.

I took my son there twice. They did chest X-rays came back said he had the flu. When in all reality he had pneumonia. Didn't find out he had it until I took him to NMCP which was his third hospital visit in one day. The second visit he wasn't even further evaluated he was given Tylenol and sent home. Still wondering how it was missed that he had pneumonia.

Do not allow this hospital to do any sutures on you.

This healthcare conglomerate is raping the citizens of Virginia Beach. They buy up the not-for-profit hospitals in the city, that exist to serve the people with fairly-priced healthcare, and drive medical costs exponentially for the sole purpose of lining their pockets while they hold our healthcare hostage. Total BS. Hopefully the People will wake up one day and shut your organization down.

I went into the ER Friday afternoon with severe pain after having already went to another hospital that gave me poor care 2 days before. From the minute I arrived I was well taken care of. The PA and nurses Pat, Liz, and Denka went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. My PA was extremely knowledgeable and made me feel even better knowing that her husband is fellow military. They immediately did blood work, x-rays and everything else necessary to figure out my issue unlike my visit to another hospital who had given me throat spray and motrin and sent me my merry way. Unfortunately I had to transfer back to the military facility but if it were my choice I would choose Sentara hands down. I hope the staff who took care of me will see this because ladies you all made my week so much better and the information you sent with me to the next hospital was very valuable. Thank u so much ladies and God bless you. Continue on with your great hospitality.

The wait in the emergency room is horrible it always seems that everyone that comes in after me get seen before me and to mention they misdiagnosed my son. Next time I'll be going to Princess Anne emergency room. SMH

This is the worst hospital in the world! Veterans and all military please stay away from this hospital, they don’t care about or family’s, - Navy Veteran

I don't love hospitals but this one has always been good to me. I have been here a few times. Every time I experience very professional service at the hospital. I'm always cared for very well. The nurses Julimar and Chris are so attentive. They are the sweetest women ever.

Don't go to ER unless you are bleeding to death. Very rude and unattentive. I have, unfortunately, been to a few ERs in my lifetime. This is the very worst by far. Go to any other ER if possible

I took my 83 year old mother to the ER on 8/22/2018, who had surgery 2 weeks before. She had gotten very weak and nauseous the last couple of days. From the time we arrived the team of nurses, receptionist, and doctors were fast, efficient, and caring. My brother and I were very impressed! I have been in many ER's and have never had a team work so seamlessly together. She was admitted and is improving.

I Have to say this Hospital has gone down hill. For its lack and unknowledge team of Doctors, Nurses, and P.A's. I went in yesterday due to server pelvic pain that hurt so bad when I walked. I went in by ambulance and it hurt so bad to sit in chairs and wheelchairs. The people who check you in for so called minor care asked me what brought me in. I told the P.A that I have server pelvic pain that was interfering with how I walked, I told him it might be an ovarian cyst since I happened to come on my menstrual cycle twice. The P.A kept saying he doubts that it could be that and kept asking me at STD's and what not. After I told him I was recently checked last week and everything came back negative. So the MA toke my Blood pressure and it was 210 over 109 and she kept saying that can't be right and we will have to check again. Once sent back into the room I was wheeled into the ultrasound where the technician checked out my ovaries. As I was heading back to my room these so called team of P.As hurried up with my test results as I was in so much pain. As I was waiting they wanted to draw blood so I had some woman who was Egyptian who acted like she didnt know what she was doing. So as she stocked the needle in my arm for they she hit one my veins and I kept bleeding and all of a sudden it started to burn. She kept pushing the needle in my arm after I repeatedly told her to stop. Finally the P.A came back and told me I had an Ovarian cyst that was small. But I asked him why does it hurt so bad to walk. He said I don't know and walked away. I am so fed up with sentara and its Hospitals. These people have no heart or compassion for what they do

Thomas Ruff

I don't have the proper vocabulary to say what needs to be said about these people..if they even are people.more like super smart beings from a far distant supior world God sent. Ty so much.

I’m visiting this hospital facility to visit my brother. I’m from Florida . My brother says the nurses are nice, attentive and courteous. He also said he felt safe and comfortable. His room is clean but the view of the roof is boring. Thanks for reading my review and a thumbs up would increase my google rating. Good luck to you and yours.

Susan E. Perry

Outstanding and caring staff. I went to the ER recently with an excruciating and painful issue. They came out to meet me when seeing me struggling to get out of the car. Wonderful caring experience for a scary/painful time. Thank you!

Jenelle Mumpower

Yesterday was by far the worst visit I've ever had with this hospital. The staff in the ER waiting room was rude except for one Front desk receptionist who helped me out very much ( thank you! ) I waited for 6 hours in the waiting room to see patients check in after me & leave before I even get to go back. I kept being told I was next , I was next...just to see another room get taken by patients checking in after me again. Finally I break down bc I'm in so much pain & the lady explained to me that she handles the list & understood i left twice but that was at 9 AM & had nothing to deal with the reason I was there at the time. She then told me that there were a lot of ambulances coming to the hospital & that they have first priority to a room. That to me is BS, I'm sorry, but it is. I will NEVER be going back to beach general unless I can see Dr. Amarillo, she was AWESOME & her nurses too!! & before I had gotten seen I had witnessed an EMT & a nurse talking trash & cursing about other employees that work there for 30 minutes in front of my room, it was VERY unprofessional.

One star is more than they deserve - Horrible care, no communication with family. Son in law was discharged this morning without notic, no discharge summary, no follow up plan - nothing! They just cut him loose. I have been in the EAP field for 25+ years and I have never seen worst treatment. Go someplace other than this hospital....

Annita Brown

Encountered one if the rudest people I have ever met at the desk in the ER!

Kat Williams

Rundown facilities, questionable cleanliness, and staff cant answer the simplest of questions. You cant always choose your hospital, but if you can avoid this one.

Mary Hillen

I had to stay overnight from surgery and I had never stayed in a hospital before. The staff was amazing, helpful, and just overall nice. They made me feel so comfortable and were there when I needed them. There was one nurse who stood out though, her name was Valerie and she works in the short stay unit overnights. She was extremely helpful and went above and beyond to make my stat that much better. Thank you all for such an amazing experience and for taking such good care of me.

Douglas Bates

My mother is still there and the communication is horrible! They do not listen to our concerns, one nurse actually suggested that we could bring food to my mother even though she was a severe aspiration risk. What's worse, she said this in front of my mother who is constantly trying to get food when she can't swallow and could choke! The social worker promised to call us and never did, the nurses have promised to call us and never did. I have tried to call the nurses station on several occasions and only once did anyone pick up the phone. We are extremely frustrated with this hospital. Never have I had this lack of communication.

I attended a pre-op educational seminar with my friend who was scheduled for knee replacement surgery 2 weeks later. We got there in plenty of time, but had no idea where the seminar was taking place. Neither did anyone we asked. Where was the sign directing us? There wasn't one. I finally hunt down an employee and ask where the seminar might be taking place. "I don't know, but check with the nurse's station on the 3rd floor." Fine…if there was anyone AT the nurse's station. It was vacant. Now, there are a number of people gathered - hobbling, in pain, very elderly…all in the same boat. Where is this seminar? Again: no sign, no one at the nurse's station. I tell those gathered (now about 8 of us hunting for the classroom) to stay still. They're in pain (remember: knee and hip replacements!), so I finally hunt down a nurse. "Oh, that seminar is on the opposite side of this floor. Yes, all those crippled elderly folks had to truck down a quarter of a mile to get to their required seminar. This is no way to run a hospital.

Last night I got rear ended at a red light. I had and still have a lot of neck and back pain. I was taken to Virginia Beach General in an ambulance. I was seen by Megan a P.A. and her nurse. I don't remember the nurse's name however I do remember how I was treated. Megan the P.A. acted as though my situation was of no importance(No big deal). Megan advices me against a X-ray although I was having chest pain.I decided to get the X-ray anyway despite her professional opinion. When I returned from the lab although I was provided with prescriptions for my pain I had to ask to be treated for the pain I was in at that moment. Megan reluctantly agreed. Her nurse handed me a pill that I assumed was ibuprofen. When I asked what she gave me I then found out it was a narcotic drug. They discharged me. After I was discharged I remembered i would need a doctor's note for work. Something again Megan the P.A. neglected to give me of even recommend. Overall my impression of this hospital and the service and services they provide as uncaring, unprofessional and completely inadequate in relation to bedside manor and patient care (inhumane, lack of natural affection). I would not recommend being here especially as a African American. This hospital is not suited for our demographic. I definitely believe this contributed to my lack of care.

Mariya Carter

Brought my 12 year old here around 11am while on vacation. She was seen immediately. Everyone was compassionate, helpful, and did a wonderful job. No complaints.

Sally W

Everyone encountered during my visit to the Emergency Department and subsequent hospital stay treated me with equal doses of professionalism and kindness. I was very impressed with the level of care I received. Can't think of one area that could be improved on. The hospital is clean, the staff is alert and well-prepared, and the doctors and nurses are just the best.

Angela Armstrong

Won't go to any other Emergency Dept. This one is the best. Don't believe me? Try another one.

Have had 12 surgeries between this hospital and Sentara Nofolk General never had a bad experience clean staff attentive and friendly

Ivelisse Then

I was waiting in the waiting room with my mother in law , this young kid about 18 years old and his friend came in a car just hit him ,hit and run , he was obviously in a lot of pain the receptionist at the front desk was so rude to him that I was taken back by the lack of respect and empathy for this patient, if you don't like people then do not be in the health care industry, the lack of caring was so unprofessional, that it made nurse ratchet look like Mary poppins!

The staff is very uncaring, impatient and uneducated! I have never in my life been to a hospital with such a rude staff. They're always in a rush and never take the time to cater to one patient. Wouldn't even give them 1 star if I could!

My husband is a disabled veteran and usually gets all his medications and care from the VA hospital in Hampton. Well, his medication got lost in the mail and this specific medication causes very serious withdrawals and a lot of pain for him, so I called Sentara, being that we live in VA Beach instead of driving him all the way out to Hampton and they told me to bring him in because this was considered a medical emergency. When I brought him in, there was no one else there waiting and he told them what he was feeling and that he already has a heart condition and that his chest was hurting and it was radiating into both of his arms. The triage nurse was very rude to him because he came to Virginia Beach General instead of driving all the way out to Hampton to the VA hospital. Then we sat and waiting for 3 HOURS waiting while people coming in behind us were brought back immediately, who seemingly didn't really have much pain or sickness, meanwhile my husband was complaining of chest pain and still made to wait. Finally, we got a triage nurse who was willing to help us and she brought us back to the triage room and the DR met us in there, wonderful doctor. While we were waiting for the doctor to come in, my husband's chart was sitting in front of him and he could see the symptoms and complaints he reported. All she wrote was that he was anxious and jittery. She didn't even put in his chart that he was complaining of chest pain or that it was radiating down into his arms, or any of the other pain and discomfort he reported. All in all, we were VERY displeased with their level of care when it came to husband being extremely uncomfortable and in a lot of pain and their complete LACK of responsibility to him.

Called to see how my fiance was doing after she was admitted into the ER. People were rude, disrespectful, and didn't even make an attempt at saying "you're welcome" or "good-bye" when hanging up. I would reccommend you go to Princess Anne or Norfolk General, they're nice and friendly.

Moira Wiora

They transferred me here from another Sentera. I'm over an hour from my car via bus. They don't allow patients to take showers and after being here 24 hours, no food provided. The staff had been promising me a shower, food and then I get discharged without any. I'm going to have to get on a bus hungry, smelly and hours from home or my car. Next time another hospital.

Billy Garrison

I found the staff very polite and professional and more than willing to meet a patients needs. It made my visit to the hospital much more pleasant even while sick and in pain.

Rachel Johnson

I was there 1/14/2019 after 9 pm and all of the staff was amazing. From the check in, to my vitals, to my CT they were all very comforting and kind. I didn't have to wait very long either.

My review is for the behavioral health unit. I was admitted at 4am after a traumatic 13 hours in the ER, being stabilized. I was not given a tour or a rundown of the policies and procedures I was to abide by. I completely missed lunch, breakfast and dinner the first day because no one came to my room to tell me it was on the floor. They expect you to not to "isolate" in your room. Well, everyone isn't an extrovert and we prefer self reflection... So, if you miss meals, they say it's your own fault for being in your room. There are not clocks in the rooms. Also, there is a "one size fits all" policy for patient treatment. They focus mainly on group therapy. If you're more of an introvert, this can be a terrifying experience. However, if you want to get out, you have to play by their rules. I will say the pain management doctor was a life saver. She got me on non-narcotic meds that really helped my ongoing chronic pain issue, which is what drove me to actions that placed me there in the first place.

treated with the upmost care and respect, the kindest staff I have ever had. I am a real person, Ryan Dalle-Tezze and it appears from experience are the people in the ER who have no insurance or want immediate attention to minor pain when the staff clearly is polite, respectful and treats in order of arrival or by severity. Most comments on here are from people who do not understand doctors and nurses are working just like the rest of us and have procedures to follow. I have been admitted twice through the ER in the last 5 years and received excellent care

Nova Star

Literally worst hospital I have EVER been to. Someone goes in with a pre existing condition and chest pain, dizziness and can't breath and they tell you. "Other people are ahead of you so you can have a seat and fill this paper out" Then after almost an hour get an ekg which is abnormal and they send you back out into the WAITING ROOM. While you sit there almost an hour longer! Then have two different doctors tell you two different things. Awful I remember Dr. Anderson and the nurse on staff were very kind but the shift change doctor was rude as can be! Good thing the abnormality wasn't a crucial emergency because they would have killed me probably. Future reference for your AWFUL front end workers and nurses. If a person comes in with chest pain and shortness of breath. TAKE THEM IMMEDIATELY. That's protocol and also common sense.
