This Hospital is included in the category of Medical Center.
Well I have to give the staff, doctors, technicians, janitors, specialists, and case management an outstanding review for there efforts in sustaining such precise beauty and accuracy on information. Only down falls I feel the VA organization faces every day are these 3rd party programs that talk bad about the VA system and minipulate and trick the Veteran that there organizations better when really there far worse
Place doesn't care about veterans. My fiance's grandfather lost his percentage and benefits because he was in the hospital and couldnt fill out some form on their becking call. Now he gets no travel pay or anything and we have to travel 2 hours to get here. Very upset and disappointed with the VA thought they were here to help our veterans not hurt them.
This is where veterans go for repairs
This is a good place for veterans i take my uncle there he likes the place
I bring a few veterans here for their appointments they don’t wait long for appointments, the staff is friendly and helpful, results are shared quickly and medications are filled quickly as well. I have confidence in the medical decisions made by providers here and appreciate they don’t beat around the bush. Sometimes parking can be difficult to find but they do have a complimentary valet to help with that. The snack bark and the cafe are pretty good for food in a hospital. Overall we keep coming back because this is not your average VA Hospital
Great
Great care and caring staff.
I can't say enough about this VA hospital. I transferred my health care from Richmond, VA Veterans Hospital to Salem VA when we moved. OMG Salem VA is the best VA Hospital I have used and I have so far used, Hampton, Richmond and now Salem. At Salem you are treated like a member of their family. If I had any complaint it would be that Orthopedics said I was in need of a knee cap replacement but they had a very long waiting list and had no idea how many months it would be before I could have the surgery. At my age I don't know how long I have left on this Earth to await knee surgery.
I'm a female veteran and can't sing enough praise for this facility. I received services here as a travel vet, as I don't live here but am in the area for a few months. It took one week to get my initial appointment. In the following month my condition was diagnosed, treatment plan developed and surgery performed. In one month. I never waited longer than 10 minutes at each appointment. They are amazing here! My gynecologist, Dr. Pasley is very good. I highly recommend him for female care. Overall, this VA is awesome.
These guys saved my life multiple times. I have friends who work there. Need I say more?
Veteran centric care
Meeting up with vital soldiers and caregivers!
Great facilities and Incredably caring staff !!
Loved
My Husband has been treated at five different VA Medical Centers in NC and VA. Salem is by far the best of them all.
This place has been good to me and a great friend.
I'm a veteran and I have been going to the center since 88 helped build it and my soul you might say I put in it.
Its impossible to contact the orthopedic clinic and since they are the only ones who can change an appointment with them. You might get put down as a no show even though you called them several times in advance. Update** so grateful I was contacted and reassured that the clinic will reach out to me. This appointment was very important to me and the situation was initially very frustrating for me since I spent a straight hour getting a hold of people just to be transferred and have no one pick up. However like I said I am very grateful the hospital has contacted me directly in attempt to resolve this problem without me driving almost 2 hours 1 way just to reschedule.
I have come across some really great people that work and volunteer there, for sure! At the same time, the psych dept could use some work! Of those great people I mentioned, most were from there.. but aside from 2-3, mainly volunteers with programs that made a difference.. most staff couldn't care less if anything happened to the patients..on 2 occasions when the alarm on the door went off (meaning someone might be attempting to hang themselves) it took way too long before any of them decided to go check it out.. esp when they are On the floor!... so, aside from a few, the only good people were the volunteers... most staff would blow you off quicker than the cheerleader to the computer nerd...beautiful building too
Excellent facility with good providers
Today was my first visit to any VA facility for myself, and although it was only enroll for Benifits I was pleased. My girlfriend in the other hand has been sitting in the emergency room for a couple of hours. But is now done and at the pharmacy. :-)
NEVER have I received better medical care! 67 years old and had an ol' country doctor for a dad.
Very nice place for treatment and brotherhood
Excellent place to work.
It has great staff that care about veterans health
I have trusted the VA hospitals for my health concerns because the Leavenworth Kansas VA hospital diagnosed my stroke when an urgent care center thought I had just an inner ear infection! I was an employee at the Leavenworth hospital for 20 years and they were also an outstanding place to work!
All the bad things that are said about the Salem VAMC aren't true. The doctor's there have saved my life. So just ignore the haters and make sure you go there to get yourself squared away.
Building 7 katherin Donaldson is extremely unprofessional, rude and unhelpful. She has a disgusting attitude and and does not follow the rules of her job. My family met all the qualifications of a program and she refused to help us deciding to help people she personally felt were more in need though they did not need to qualifications. She is impossible to get in contact with so if she manages your case you will Have to meet with someone who is uniformed about your case. On our first appointment with her she sat up and complained non stop about her co workers. Completely unprofessional.
Spent 3 days there in last week with my husband. Busy ER, moved patients through, helped us so much. Returned for appointment and again to er. Quick diagnosis after testing. Met 4 physicians, all caring, thorough, look at patient, not computer. Staff very nice, responsive to phone calls. Thank you for access to a well run facility. Now that's the way to run a railroad. In appreciation.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my multiple appoinments over the past year with the staff, doctors, surgeons and volunteers who care for me at the Salem VA. I happily drive from four hours away to receive the BEST possible service for me. The Women's Clinic is exceptional in my opinion.
My husband I have been using the Salem VA for over 15 years. The staff is friendly, helpful and good at their jobs. The Womens clinic is clean and staff friendly and professional. The mental health department has helped my disabled combat vet husband and provided stellar support. I could go on and on about how great Salem VA is, but I suggest you go find out yourself. BEST VA IN THE USA. Just had minor surgery. The Doctor and nursing staff took great care of me. They explained everything to me and listened to me. THANKS!
Real mix of doctors. Some are great, but others are incompetent. Facilities are old and decaying. Veterans often feel defeated trying to obtain the care they need and deserve.
I get great care here. I can vouch for most of the clinics here.
This medical facility has always given me the best care and the people are friendly.
Nice and clean
This place is wonderful. My father was admitted and they are taking great care of him. The staff are very pleasant. They know how to take care of our veterans.
This place dose not care about it's veterans. My husband has been let down by the VA several times so I put him on my insurance, but he still always tries to use the Va when he can which never works out for example he went there twice for a lump under his arm, they finally set him up with a surgeon to have it removed the day of his surgery the doctor told him she could not remove it because it may be cancer he needed a biopsy well the dermatologist calls and says he can't get him in for over a month and a half to get the biopsy. So basically the VA is saying in a not so direct way is, " we will get to you when we get to you regardless of how your health is affected." My husband is a combat vet he paid his due to have free good health care but yet I still had to put him on my insurance so he can get the proper treatment he needs. I feel sorry for all the other vets that do not have any other choice but to use the VA.
Superb...staff..PHENOMENAL professionalism. The: BEST OF THE BEST IN Veteran care and respurces...in the Country. BRAVO ZULU
They take good care of my father in law
They said they could not identify the patient for a request for emergency care payment at a nonVA facility. So I've called all the available contact numbers I could and have been on hold for over an hour. The nonVA medical center even said they were put on hold for over 45 minutes each time. So now I'm stuck paying a bill that I shouldn't have even received. Thanks to this VA.
Great service being provided to our veteran!
I have been going to the Salem VA for about a year now. I have found the care to be outstanding. I need both medical and psychological services and have found both departments to be very accomodating for my needs. The co-pay for medicines is very fair.
Outsanding thanks
Sad, took my 84 year old mom in to get her transferred from the VA in West virginia to the VA here in Salem. After spending a few hours in there 1 year ago we found out nothing was done. Tried to get mom an eye appointment and they said they have no record of her. I was told we need to bring all her info now to prove she is a veteran. Apparently there is no system which connects VA offices state to state. And yes, she has a VA card with her info and picture on it. My biggest problem in all of this is that she would never be able to navigate this system alone. She was a marine in the 50's. She was a strong woman. Now they are taking advantage of her age by putting up so many road blocks that without me she wouldn't get the care she deserves. I was transferred 4 times this morning until I reached someone who hopefully knows what hes talking about. We'll go back and spend another couple of hours there.
It's an okay place for what it is. The layout of the area can be overwhelming for guys just starting their adventure with the VA, and some of the buildings are in dire need of renovations/updating.
They treat veterans very badly
I spent 3 months in the trauma processing program, and it helped me very much in dealing with my ptsd. It's a shame that the VA is fixing something that is not broken! Shame on you VA!
I've waited over 2 months for a device from prosthetic's, oh and still waiting. I called yesterday and the lady said OMG it hasn't been ordered yet. I asked how long and she couldn't give me an answer. It especially sucks because this device is supposed to replace a medication that I ran out of because I was supposed to have the device before I ran out.
Best service to us Veterans
Let me begin by saying I am a retired veteran, with great private insurance, so going to the Salem VAMC isn't a financial reason. Having been diagnosed with cancer, I have received numerous procedures from Xray, MRI, CT Scans, Stress tests, imaging, Lab work, oncology, surgical consults, operations, biopsy, etc... I have not 1 complaint (well, not totally true; parking sucks! So use the valet service) I have been treated with respect, kindness, everyone has been caring, thankful for my service and even had nurses pray over me. Of coarse some of the aesthetics of the facilities are well-worn; it services more patients in a year than all other local hospitals combined! I don't care if a wall needs painting when the equipment being used in that room is state of the art. I have not met one single rude staff member in any of the clinics there. I wish they had patient wifi and more available private rooms, but that is of little concern when it comes to care and respect. Thank you VAMC and staff members for all you've done for me and continue to do for me in the scariest battle of my career.
I have always had a good experience at the Salem VA. Hard to get appointments sometimes, and close in, but all and all, they are the best.
Best VA center I've ever been to!
This VA officially sucks and is breaking the law, can't believe it's considered one of the best in the country, goes to show u how HORRIBLE veteran care is is in the USA for vets and family!Went to see family member who is in hospital, they were denied visitation and access to sending receiving phone calls, considering calling someone above their heads, this is infuriating and despicable. I thought the care at other VAs were bad, people think things have changed. Far from it, feels like it's the 1950s to me, this is disgusting!!!
Great care for us Vets! Friendly Staff! Normal crowded parking.
Long day, tired.
I am so very grateful to the social work and medical staff. They literally saved my brother's life. He was literally dumped by another facility when he completed his chemo and radiation and the VA staff found a way to help him! 5 star grateful from me!
Social Workers: First of all I've only spoken to 3-4 of them. Why 3-4? I guess because all that Paula Kingley told me to do was NOT true! I was told to get him up there immediately. Call Adult Protective Services-nothing they can do, she could put the paperwork for us to get guardianship-completely not true tells me to get a lawyer, would NOT meet with me in person, if I could get him there call the cops and have him arrested(thank god I didn't do this because no telling how much money we would have to pay), I fly home to get him up there and he's there 2 days......I'm on the airplane home to NJ (still sitting on the plane) and they are releasing him. He was currently there for suicide and alcholism. They released him because they felt he could make his own decisions. So WHATEVER, faith I had in the system is completely gone to hell. Basically, because they've released him they've sent him to his death. I took a 5 days off of the 3 jobs I work and yes 3 jobs, spent and outrageous amount for a plane ticket and as soon as I leave they release him. Now know of us know where he is....... The only kind words I can give is to the male nurse in the ER who was amazing, Susie the head nurse in ER and my dad's nurse in ward 4J. Maybe put these people in charge instead of the damn admin people you have because they know what really is going on.
I receive great care
I definitely give it 5 stars because they care, work their tails off for you and given the number of patients they deal with it's amazing. Maybe there are some VA facilities that aren't up to par but I my experience in the Pacific NW is nothing short of amazing.
Staff is friendly and very knowledgable. Great veterans hospital.
My grandfather served in the Navy for 27 years he is my hero and means everything to me. I know I posted a posted a good review saying that the Va treats the vets like hero's. Ummmm...no. My Grandfather was very Ill at one point and the doctors were just so rude and kept saying he was going to die and we should start taking care of funeral plans. How come once we get him home he starts getting better he is able to gain weight and etc. Its so said that these so called doctors act like they know things but they don't. And the Nurses and Doctors if you didn't serve why work at the Va!? Y'all don't know what we Vets have been through and what its like for us. Before you step in this field working with vets who have served and have been there you really need to watch what you say or do. I am a vet and I don't even go to the Va I just use my regular doctors. It just seems as you don't get treated right for all the hard work you do to protect and serve. If you need care and need to be seen in Roanoke I would go to Lewis Gale they are a whole lot better when it comes to the best care you need.
The wait
I was told I had to drive over an hour to this hospital only to arrive the day of my appointment and the man in Physical Therapy to tell me that it could have been done in my hometown instead of in Salem. He stated that it got approved almost a week ago and that no one had notified me. I drove over an hour each way, called out of work, didn’t receive any therapy and wasted my time and gas. This was not the only time I have been treated like this by the VA. Complete incompetence on everyone’s part. I would give this no stars if I had the option.
The er is awful been back here for almost two hours without assistance and my tooth feels awful yes I’m still here will be calling patio advocate on Monday they don’t care at all. I would give a 0 star if I could
One of the best VAMC's around.
Great Facility

I volunteer here and I stop by here daily. I think this is a well kept Veterans care center. I sometimes enjoy just coming and walking alone around the grounds or with my dog on the trails in the back. Sometimes my husband joins me here as well. One thing though, some people think this place is a meeting spot to meet young men. Or dont respect this area enough... I remember, there was a woman, her name is Delilah Bonhotel, I think her name may be Delilah Bonhotel Puckett now, but I remember seeing her many times talking to young men, trying to pick them up, it seemed. She is a shorter blonde woman, She is simply strange. People such as her coming here, I dont think they respect this place enough and what it stands for. I dont think they should be allowed to come here if they treat it like a pick-up place. I witnessed her just the other day, speaking to a respectable- looking young man, trying to pick him up. The young man had a hat on that had some kind of Korean words on it. He was clearly uncomfortable, but she did not care. I suspect this young man did not even know who she was. Then, there is a young black lady whom works here, with Red in her hair. She completely does her job wrong. And she doesnt look happy when she does it. Her name is Angela but I do not know her last name. I remember, she was sitting in the Cafeteria area one day, and was completely disrespecting a veteran, and telling him he was not sitting straight up. The man obviously could not straighten his back very well, so I helped him out. The lady got on me, but was quickly silenced by the veterans daughter. I love our veterans and they deserve respect and their residence deserves respect. I overall will give this place a 5 star rating.
Amazing staff
Caring people
Still in hospital.
Great people and service
My uncle has been going to this hospital for a long time. He has had a lot of trouble with kidney stones. He had to wait over 18 months to get a kidney stone that he couldn't pass removed. When they FINALLY did the surgery, it was too late. The stone had embedded in his kidney causing him to have a tube put in his back and then have to go back for another surgery. He went back for the surgery and went home on Sat, and back in the hospital last night (Monday) saying he has a bad UTI. If they had done the surgery when they should have, he wouldn't be having the problems he has now. Definitely not how you treat our nation's veterans.
Excellent medical care
I count myself extremely lucky to have access to this Hospital. The staff is friendly and helpful the medical Care is very good.
Best place to get care as a veteran
Very fast courtious service.
Your tazawell cboc clinic has just broken my pain management contract by putting my pain medicine increase before what they are calling the Intergrative Care Team but according to the contact Dr Dalton is the one over my pain management and nobody else so if you don't rectify this breach of contract I will be filing a federal tort and lawsuit for breach of contract and malpractice for discussion of my case with unauthorized personal
I have attempted several times to contact them in the past month about my appointments and try to get through to the homeless line. It has always gone to voicemail and I have left multiple messages. They will update records stating that they ‘attempted to contact me and that I was a no call no show’ to my appointments. Now they’ve sent me a letter saying I’m going to lose my primary care.
The facility is large so it makes it very difficult to find certain offices. The size may account for the longer wait times. However, they do have a professional and knowledgeable medical staff and very clean facilities.
Brought my wife to ER with knee complications after surgery. They had no chair that gives leg support. Took her after 3 hours of waiting for ultrasound in a chair that required her to hold her leg in the air while the "nurse" pushed her down the halls. No sense of patient comfort or protection whatsoever ' Dispicable.
Always treated with respect by all levels of the staff here. Makes me proud to be a veteran.
Great care when I was worried about my heart. Sensitive, caring staff. I'd use this hospital again.
Thanks to real family,I'm alive from the sad treatment I received here a few years ago!
Great hospital. Always the treatment is excellent.
