REVIEWS OF George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center IN Utah

Honestly, this place is pretty cool! I did have to do physical therapy for a year before they finally admitted that an issue I had wasn't muscular. Other than that, most folks there are extremely helpful.

Monica Hart

You might notice, in other reviews, I am extremely harsh on most government entities and with good reason. Government needs to be held to a high standard. They often hold our freedoms and our lives in the palm of their hands. In many cases a number of agencies both state and federal are, for lack of a better term, FUBAR. Many government agencies in the US throw people in jail, many who really do not belong there, completely destroy the lives of the average citizen, and often take more and more of our rights while giving nothing back. And every agency has the problem of bureaucracy. You might say I usually believe that with government a less is more approach is usually better. Enter the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City. They are the epitome of how an agency should treat those who served. When one government agency completely destroyed my life The George E Whalen Medical center has helped me to build a new life. While they may have the problem of government bureaucracy it's not enough for me to justify giving them a lower rating. So, I am happy to present them with a high rating. Good job!

I have never had a bad experience with my health concerns. The Doctors , PSA ,& nurses are the best. I've always been treated with respect and dignity. My appointments are always on time and they have answered all my questions . The services I receive are the best. Salt Lake is to be congratulated for caring for all veterans. The MOVE program has saved my life and helped me to make life changes. Thank you for the good that you do for us. Respectfully G. Richard Humphries

You hear all these bad things about the VA, but our experiences have only been great: caring staff, efficiency, attentive, cheerful, I can not think of any negatives. Thanks VA for your care of my loved one.

I have been a "customer" since the early 90's, the last century I have really no advisory negativity of this Hospital. This century the 21st my satisfact of the Hospital gone way down, medical staff has abused and mistreated even to a Hospital Staff member out right demanding to "Kiss (he/her) boots before "service Connected" injuries treated. Upon application of applying even unto "advocacy Office" was informed, bend over and take it" or do as the doctors demand or services denied. When a medical staff is placed over patient that does not qualifications to administer (nurse not MD) and states unto (I) no qualification to understand or interpret medical records, radiology, x-rays/MRI ectrat and says of such then cannot justify continued medication ect, Thank God outside resource available but that now in jeopardy. I go back to this Hospital against my wishes...... Basically severy miss treated by some of the staff...not all but a few including the "Advocacy Office that needs to on behave of the patient not covering for the "back-sides" of the personnel miss-treating VETERANS!

Generally very good service. People who work here care about the Vets they serve.

Justin Youse

Standard VA hospital. I've had great and horrible care here. But my PCP is the best that I have ever had.

John Gerritsen

Great nurses and doctors always attentive especially on AMU. They are the best there is.

Sylvia Hight

This place is awesome. I moved here from Durham NC and what a difference. Of course I had a great team of doctors in NC. In Salt Lake I have received immediate care and appropriate appointments to help with all my needs. The choice program is awful. I've been here since March and been unable to get outside appointments. Each time my primary doctor and her team have been there for me. I have received physical therapy appointments and care also. Thank you SLC.

If I could give this place -5 stars I would. I went in there with my grandpa who got stung in the eye by an insect. Because It was very swollen . We waited 30 minutes to see someone. which isn’t that bad for the VA because people have waited hours. however as soon as we got into the room the guy asked him what was wrong left for about 45 minutes came back and said somebody else will be coming into see him moved us into a different room and then another 45 minutes. the guy came in and said you’re fine go home. Didn’t give him any pain medication, didn’t offer what to do to put the swelling down. I am very disappointed this is how we treat the people that fought for our country. I believe they should be treated better than in a normal hospital. They definitely have earned that. And I’ve never been treated like that at a normal hospital.

My primary care, Dr. Sessions and his nurse; Michelle, in Ogden, UT are attentive and great. The ER at the SLC V.A. Medical Center have helped me many times over the years. They treat me as a Vet. They respect me.

Emergency department, and select other departments, open 24/7. Most clinics and the main outpatient pharmacy are open only Monday - Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm. This is a decent VA. They are currently improving facilities and much of the campus is under construction. The doctors and staff are pleasant and helpful. My only complaint is that their computer system is archaic and they frequently experience network outages making it difficult for interdepartmental communication.

Daniel Bobst

They take care of our Vets.

They struggle to get mail order prescriptions to the veterans on time. I had a simple procedure were they administered a drug they knew I was allergic to. Some clinics rate as a five while others rate -1. If you have an option, use anything other than the VAMC SLC. The past 8-years they have gone the wrong direction.

Robin Lowrey

I am a long term vet.and was seeing my Dr.at the Vetran Hostipal and didn't see a permit parking zone sign and revived a parking ticket.just not fair,at all.thanks ARMY.

This VA Medical Center in SLC is by far the best yet. Professional, caring and prompt as possible considering these are the Feds.

My husband has been having severe pain in his stomach for over 10+ years and the VA has been totally ignoring it. They even did 2 colonoscopy's looking for the cause. Finally they outsourced him to a doctor at Jordan Valley Hospital were they found that he has a hiatal hernia, and needs to have surgery to repair the damage. This was back the first part of December 2014. Then the first week of January we are contacted by the VA and told that he needs to have surgery and they are going to do it the middle of March 2015. But now today (march 6th 2015) they call us and tell us that needs to have more tests before they can do the surgery and now sending him to the U of U for the tests and it will take another 5 to 6 weeks for this and then another 2 to 3 weeks for the results to come back and then another 2 to 3 months to see a doctor at the VA to decided if they are still going to do surgery and then it'll be another 2 to 3 months to wait for the surgery. We've sold our house and moving out of state because they have a BETTER VA HOSPITAL! We have to be out of our house by May 1st 2015. We have already moved 90% of our belongs out of state and put them into storage and was just waiting for my husband to feel better before we had to be moved out. We also have animals indoor and out. What are supposed to do, move into a an apartment with no furnishings and put the animals into boarding for who knows how LONG???? While we wait for the VA to decide what and if they are going to do something. No I don't think so. I've contacted Senator Lee's office for help and if he can't help then I will call an Attorney and get help. I can't believe that they can get away with screwing up everyone lives but their own! If I could give a negative rating I would. I can see why my step dad who worked up there for the VA Hospital for 34 years and was a veteran who served in the Navy for 8 years refused to go up there for medical help.

I have had the privilege of being cared for at this hospital for more than ten (10) years. Knowledgeable, professional, caring, hard working folks. We are blessed to have this hospital up north.

Bandit 82

The only reason most vets are okay with care here is because it us free for the most part, and it is better then what got in service. But the waits are crazy long, and it takes forever to get appointments. The building itself is old and outdated. I was in ER and had no nurse call button, they weren't checking on me often, I had an iv in attached to wall, not a iv pole, and was there for excessive diarrhea, so hard time getting to bathroom. Been diagnosed with major thing 2 years ago, still waiting for treatment, and had another treatment for other thing stopped until they get things together, so that has been stopped for a few years. Even took 3 1/2 years to even get my care and benefits started after getting out if service. They need negative stars.

Salt Lake City Veteran Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah; SHAME ON YOU SLEEP CLINIC FOR NOT RESPONSE TO VETERAN PATIENTS. MY HUSBAND DID LEFT MESSAGES SEVERAL TIMES AND NEVER RETURN OUR CALL MORE THAN 4 WEEKS TILL GOT TODAY. HOW DARE YOU SLEEP CLINIC BEING LYING TO VETERAN PATIENTS THAT BLAMING ON PROSTHETICS!!! WHY ARE YOU DOING ON JOB (TAKING MONEY AND DO NOTHING THEN GET OUT OF VETERAN MEDICAL CENTER NOW!!) MY HUSBAND HAS BEEN TRYING TO GET A HOLD OF YOU SLEEP CLINIC TO REQUESTING TO GET HIS SLEEP APNEA MASK, THE REASON WHY PARTS WERE BROKEN AND HAS NO EXTRA SLEEP APNEA MASK!! YOU SLEEP CLINIC EMPLOYEES ARE LYING AND GET OUT!

We are currently at the VA Hospital now, after he was discharged this morning and given nothing for pain other than being told to use Tylenol. My husband has bilateral pulmonary embolism (blood clots in both lungs). The pain is excruciating. They are the ones who diagnosed it. After diagnosing it, they gave him toredol (sp?) And then, after that, only Tylenol. We told them he has headaches now. They did a neurological test and said he is okay, more Tylenol. My husband is not a drug user, usually turning things down when offered. He was a pilot in the military and has donated platelets for infants for the last 18yrs, every 2 weeks consistently. His pain is consistently over 8 on a 1-10 pain scale with 10 being the worst. He has been in excellent health, described as an anomaly because at 62 he has the health and physique as a fit 40-something male. He does not use any drugs, does not drink alcohol or smoke. His only vice, the occasional donut. His record reflects perfect health, especially for a Vietnam era vet. He runs 3x a week, 7+miles. A formal complaint is being written and will go to the Director of Veteran Affairs, our congressman and to our senator. Both of us are veterans, both of us served honorably. This should not be an issue. And, what is worse, despite my husband's service era and his Camp Lejune status, they are going to charge us for this "care"- term used very loosely. Pros: Dr Christie Jahn- the doc who said it was BPE, Dr David Shewell- the doc who asked 'why' this is happening after we came back again and addressed the pain concerns and others, Ed, Adam, Vernon, Tina and Sean- the nurses and techs with amazing bedside manner and love serving the veterans patients.

I went to the V..A to pick up my prescription and they gave me cyanide. The pharmacy tech gave me instruction how to use it. She said one or two seconds I should be dead. Less paper work for us.

I live at the Valor House. I am close to my doctors now that I live on the VA hospital site and grounds. It is amazing how much care that I am getting here. No complaints from me. I hope you also find this to be a great place for treatments. Update : Now living in Florida

Best V.A. Medical facility in the Western United States

Lee Hubbard

the whole system sucks, including administration employees. Praise those that do care for the Veteran, it must really piss off the VA.

Brent Hammond

I only go here when absollutly necessary because I have no other options. Always get treated like dirt. This place sucks!

Mark Manley

Despite some negative reviews of the VA, its Healthcare is among the best and safest in the nation, and it is consistently ranked among the best organizations to work for. The George E. Whalen medical center and its affiliated clinics are filled with caring professionals and the care is second to none.

Joe Baker

VA serves all veterans and communities.

My father has been going through liver failure for the past year and then they found cancer on his liver. For the past MONTH he has been up there FIVE TIMES to have it treated but every single time they have either gotten the date wrong or didn't have enough people to do the chemo treatment. HOW IS A HOSPITAL THAT UNORGANIZED!!??? they are also under investigation for treating people in dirty rooms. They are the lowest rated hospitals in the country. He gets his nerves worked up over having this done only to be sent home because they are unorganized!! disgusting how they treat the hero's of this country!!!! I hope Trump does take notice and does something about it.

Tina Rader

Our sister had a major surgery here the Drs were so good to her and her family checked on her alot the nurses were some of the best I've seen we couldn't have been happier with this choice of VA hospitals Thank You All

Very caring and considerate personnel. I have received emergency, primary and other healthcare services on multiple occasions. The care has always been very good. The stress and difficulty of transitioning to V.A. care after active Military service was difficult for me. The V.A. in Salt Lake helped me a lot. I have participated in several recreational programs and town halls that were above and beyond what I might do for myself. I have had the privilege of utilizing several V.A. facilities across the nation. The Salt Lake City V.A. has been the best in my experience.

Richard Forester

First Class care and treatment. I tust them with evey medical question and proceedure. I have had the best treatment in every way. They call me and schedule the appointments with lots of communication when I am at the appointments. I would rate this hospital first class.

Until they get their enrollment extension working, I will fix my review. I work remote and have to schedule with this VA. I cannot get a hold of anyone in enrollment and I've been trying for weeks. Every person has sent me to an extension that will hang up. Show up in person and I'm stuck waiting hours just to talk to someone. I'm thankful I have civilian insurance and can go elsewhere.

ER and mental health are good. The Blue Clinic needs a lot of work. Follow up care from orthopedics needs to be fixed. I had an open wound for 8 months after my knee replacement. Doctor actually bragged that it only took 28 minutes to replace my knee.

Matthew Partlow

I would like to thank everyone for the doctors and nurses at the VA

Amy Leyba

My husband's care for foot surgery and follow up has been excellent here.

I cannot begin to explain how amazing this, and many other, VA Medical Centers are. The care I have received in Salt Lake City as we as Richmond Virginia, are second to none. In my opinion, Veterans are the most fortunate group of people on God's green earth and I can only hope that all of the VA centers begin to get the recognition they deserve.

It’s Crazy how My reviews which included nothing obscene were deleted?...sure its a mistake???, Are Some of the others deleted???.....the VA Has Done in my opinion More Harm Than Good, it exists to serve itself.....words cannot express My hatred for an “Organization” meant to serve Combat Veterans like Myself/19Delta/ Rather Demand we serve them......

Devon Dodge

Always helpful and remains a top health care provider in the state of Utah.

Stephen Gale

These people have taken better care of me than Utah County medical center or the Wasatch IHC hospital ever did. I was in the VA the other day for an appointment. They took me in 30 minutes early and were very professional. There was a downside to the visit however, there was an apparently well to do gentleman that was being extremely rude to the staff there because he couldn't get right in without an appointment. I call these the "Special People", who cause more problems anywhere they go than they are worth. I personally don't care if your are a senator or congressman, you are not anymore important than I am. You should get your appointments the same as I and wait your turn. I have served my nation and community vigorously for 60 years and I hate "Special People". The VA does a good job with the staff and facilities they have, which our lawmakers never fund adequately. They are always ready to send weapons and soldiers off to war, often to their deaths, but those same cost cutting lawmakers refuse to fund the needs of the places that are taking care of us upon our return. They crucified a VA leader for wrong doing , which they should have, but they never mentioned their involvement in the problem by underfunding the program and I'm guessing the complaining gentleman is part and parcel to the cost cutting traitors that let us down when we need it.

John Hinckley

Fred Barber

Horrid service. but they made up for it after we left. They have since helped quite a bit better.

Edward Reioux

The guys who run their so-called valet parking don’t know what they’re doing. First off they want you to leave your window down so your stuff get stolen have had that happen there. When they come out a lot they must think their Mario Andretti, and they have nearly run over veterans there. The lot supervisor was totally disrespectful to me when I brought these issues up to him. Parking there is a joke.

Bradley Gonnuscio

Thank God for the VA.

Barbara Kocher

I've heard some scary stories of the V.A. I'm general, & the way they "mistreat" their patients. However, since my mom was admitted here about 2 & a 1/2 years ago, & in all the follow up visits since..., I'd have to say that all of the stories I've heard were wrong. My mom, & all of us family members have ONLY been treated with respect, & my mom's medical care has been phenomenal!!! I personally would like to commend the V.A. Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, & all of it's employees for the genuine concern and professionalism they've extended to my mom.

George E. Wahlen is a great VA hospital that has taken very good care of me. The staff always do their best even when resources is low. Cannot be any prouder to have this VA in my area. You know the service is going to be excellent when the VA medical center is named after a Navy Corpsman.

I wish you didn't have to give them any stars I have never had an experience with the va that has ever been even remotely ok. I have been here for 2 hrs haven't seen a Dr or anything I had to ask a nurse what the deal was then 30 min later walked out in the hall and all nurses and Dr s are standing around talking and laughing. Very un professional.
