This is the worst hospital ever. My mom was here for two months and the nurses and staff on the fifth floor 5East treated my mom like complete trash. My sister walked up on two nurses talking trash about my mom. This is a shame that we could not trust Roper (downtown) to care for my mom when we couldn’t be there. I will never bring my mom back to Roper. These woman on 5 East are completely unprofessional. They treated my mom like she was a walking disease. My mom would call us crying saying how they were mistreating her. They are rude and have very nasty and unprofessional attitudes. Especially, the case manager. Never again.

Severely overcharged me and pushed me into services I didn't need. They do all they can to charge patients as much as possible and for as much as possible. Even a flu shot cost 300$+. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE or just see if Google can help you with your illness.

Susan Olson

The emergency room staff and Doctors are unbelievably rude. No one goes for medical attention and wants to be told to "Drink gatorade!" No need to wrap a injury. So my advice is your better off going to Walgreens. At least it won't cost as much.

Karen Graham Bass

I've never been to or worked in a hospital so mixed up as this. A different staff of nurses not only at shift change but also everyday. How discomforting to have to explain things almost every hour. Meals are at different times. Ex: breakfast anytime between 8 and 10. On the positive side their was one nurse that was very terrific she worked in the cardiac icu. JENNIFER was patient and answered all of our questions.

Mickie Taffinder

Dr. Stanley Wilson has been my doctor for many years and will continue to be so as long as possible.

EDIT: Dr. Ball apparently was convicted of sexual misconduct in 2003, but was still left in charge of critically ill patients. Now that I know this was the case I am even more furious about what happened. Do not go here. They would probably hire Casey Anthony to be a pediatrician. On May 11th my mom called me at about 5:30 in the morning (Pacific Time) and told me she thought she was going to die. I immediately arranged to fly out. I called the nurses station after I booked my flight because my mom missed the call. A nurse who identified himself as "Patrick" answered. He said my mom "wasn't dying," that she was "just embarrassed" and that she was "pulling on our heartstrings for attention." I flew out anyway. My mom was in bad shape. On mother's day when I came to bring her lunch she was not responsive and got moved to the ICU. She died on Tuesday. I've tried to ask for patient advocates and hospital administrators but everyone has blown me off. Hopefully someone can look back and listen to a recording of that phone call and understand why I'm so upset. The rest of the nurses and the staff were great. Dr. Ball was great about explaining my mother's condition to me. The palintive care doctor was very kind and understanding. The other nurses were wonderful. I feel bad writing this but Patrick was the nurse assigned to my mom for a few days. I can't shake the thought that she might have survived had he taken her seriously.

I've been waiting since January for medical records. I continue to call back and email them so that I have a record of me calling. When I do reach someone I keep getting the run around and have been told 3 times that a supervisor would call me back. I finally spoke with a supervisor. whop stated they would call me back to see what they did with my records, that was 1 month ago. Calling again today to see what I can find out.

Bob Haley

Dr. Beth Hughes has been my physician for several years and I recommend her highly. She is knowledgeable and empathetic. In short, she is everything a patient wants in a physician.

Charlie Stinchfield

The way this healthcare facility conducts business is laughable and I'm quite certain their billing system was designed by a 3 year old.

Overall i am very satisfied with the level of care my father received while at Roper Hospital. The doctors made themselves available to answer questions. The nurses were great. Only issue i had was the valet people out front were very rude but other than that i have no complaints.

Robert Angel

I just had a Heart Ablation for Atrial Flutter from Dr. Frain at Roper. I could not have been more pleased with every aspect of the Doctor, the Roper staff, the facilities cleanliness and the promptness of care. THANK YOU!!!! Best medical facility in Charleston by far!

To those of you who have pain from varicose veins as I did, you must see Dr. Britt Tonnessen. I went to her with concerns of my pain and fear of developing blood clots. She was very understanding and took time with me. She sent me to have ultra sounds and we decided to do surgery. She explains everything in detail and answered any questions I had. Truthfully, I was scared and was also concerned about scars. She has been a God send. She is very gentle and professional. The pain of the varicose veins is gone along with the unsightly veins. The incisions were so small, you cannot even tell where they were. I wish I would have done this years ago! I can not say enough nice things about her and her professionalism, but if you have concerns and pain, I highly recommend Dr. Tonnessen. I also recommend Roper St. Francis. The staff are so nice and professional. You are made very comfortable there instead of feeling like just another number. Kudos to Dr. Britt Tonnessen and Kudos to Roper Hospital!!! Thank You!!

Im really not pleased with roper downtown services. I was sent back to work the very next day with a sprained need. The dr. and nurses r rude they have no patients at all.My experience with them on friday was horrible, i will never return back to this hospital. Now im going to get a second opinion on my leg. Not to mention they sent me home with my pressure being high smh

I have to say I am really disappointed in this company. You think that some of the patients are being treated bad, but so are the employees. It really shows you how the person who own the business is running it. You better believe it does come from the top, because they have the authority to do something about it. And when you see this many bad reviews, you should be doing something about it. Not making excuse for the lousy job your doing, but realizing you made a mistake and find a solution to fix it. That is what boss do. I never thought I would be saying this but I am. I am very disappointed in you. You made me believe that you really want the best for your company, but when you look at the way these peoples are being treated, it doesn't look like your doing the best for your company. You want to short change and do short cut, but do you realize when you're understaffing you're putting the patients and staffs in harm way. Statistics show that whenever there is understaffing there is more falls and injuries. Whether it is for patients or staff members. Supervisor or manager that make a decision to do this is not making good sound judgement because they are putting the staff in harm way. Instead of them saving the compamy money they are actually causing the company to lost money. It lead to court and litigation action. And don't think because you can put more Rns on the floor that they will pick up the slack. Some Rns do not think they are entitle to do primary care. You maybe thinking that because the Rns can administer medications and they can do primary care, that you can cut back on the staffs and throw the nurse on floor, but that nurse is not going kill herself. And so this leaves more work on the tech. No techs should have to be on the floor without getting aid from their nurses. Where is the team player? Not only that the patients need to be properly evaluated. No patients should be force to get up against their will. These patients have their rights. They have the right to refuse. These doctors need to work on their listening skills when come to their patients. When these patients are in pain they need to be able to alleviate their pain. I have worked in rehab and I never seen a rehab run like that. This explain the reason why there is so many accidents on the floor. They need to make sure that orders for equipments to be use on patients are put in. Don't wait into after someone gets hurt and place a order. Not only that, but I am not seeing them follow the state board regulations. I remember prior to taking my state board exam to receive my license, that the tech is not to be assigned to patients more than half their weight. I remember after finishing school that is how they did it, but now they are assigning them to any patients. And you better believe they are causing injuries by doing this. Worker Comp is not trying pay nothing these days, but if they are injured on the job, they are going have to pay it. It is not for the company to have a worker compensation doctor to deny these employees their claim when did got hurt on the job. They have to work on finding a solution to fix it, and we are not talking about omitting informations or lying and committing medical fraud to keep from paying these employees their compensation. It make sense why that this company will have their own attorney, to get out ligation action. Not only is this worker compensation doctor train in deny these employees their claim, but he is actually performing negligence and malpractice by allowing these employees to return to work without giving them proper evaluation/treatment to alleviate their pain. All so they can save the company money. This is Fraud. These people here deserve better. No one should have to go through pain and suffering. Why can't they do the right thing?

From start to finish a great experience. Especially to the nurses on 7 buxton for the great care ! And Dr Lewis in the er.

Update: So I called the number the respondent to this review asked me to. It was the main switchboard at the hospital. The operator did not have a clue who Sherry was. I rest my case! As both a breast/lung cancer survivor, I've had many surgeries in the past. In addition, I've survived being hit by a van and being ran over. My experience with health care services is vast. And I can say without a doubt, this is the worst hospital I've been in. While there are many reasons for this opinion, the two biggest were that I was over anesthesized causing me to be sick for days. The recovery room nurse was the rudest I've ever met! Her obvious intention was to get me out of there as quickly as possible. The fact that I was vomiting in the valet line says enough. To add insult to injury, I was given a RX for nausea in pill form! I would never use this hospital again.

Dee Bert

Dr. Stanley Wilson is a wonderful man. His staff is excellent and friendly. He has been very good about explaining what he can do to help with my medical problem. I feel ferry comfortable having him do my surgery later this month.

Sabine Reeves

On Thursday of last week, I brought my mother to Roper downtown emergency room to examine her legs which were badly infected and not healing. Injuries resulted from a fall at her home. ER nurses, doctor, and receptionist when we entered were great. She came in tense, not wanting to see another doctor, but left very satisfied with care given. I saw some reviews that were not pleased, and I know there are different situations, but this visit was successful for us.

Virginia Williams

I brought my friend to the hospital for what was supposed to be outpatient care but she ended having to spend the night. The so-called valet parking was a bad joke. I have a Chrysler Sebring convertable and some one had fun with it. The computer showed it had been driven for over 3 hours, there was also a chip taken out of a fender. The sheets on the bed my friend was given were stained with what looked like dried blood (not hers) and the food the deplorable. This hospital is totally lacking in a expertice or quality in any area - nursing, meals, cleanliness all deplorable.

It is a good hospital.

My mother had 5way bypass at 79 yrs old! Although her recovery took longer than expected, she had great results for a first major surgery in her life! She had no chest pain, I had to make her use her heart pillow!!!!

I went to roper hospital downtown in august of 2018 for a car accident that me and my service dog champ was involved in, in which my car was totaled. I blacked out for a few moments, champ was shaken a little but he was ok. When the chas county ems arrived they refused to allow champ to accompany me stating that i was lying about him being a service dog despite me showing them his IDs, and credentials. I was hyperventilating from the ride to roper so I started listening to Gospel to try and calm myself. Not loud. Whn I got to roper hospital the doctor or nurse wouldn't help me bc i was listening to Gospel. Saying that I need to turn it off And not down. Bc i didn't turn it off the doctor left out and didn't return and so did the nurse's. Despite me having breathing problems they didn't Even offer any help for that. my family was not allowed to come check on me at all. They called security on me I called 911. Which 911 some how allow the nurse to tell them that I didn't need them. 911 never came even when i called back a few hour later. How's that even possible. I was not afforded the emergency services needed. No examination not even a transfer from roper hospital to musc. They made me wait in the ER for hours against my will. 911 still never came despite me calling back. My girlfriend had to pretty much carry me to musc bc I couldn't even use a wheelchair according to roper staff.... They have pictures up all over roper hospital stating basically how's it's the law the u get emergency treatment and examinations to the best of the staffs and facilities abilities and even necessary transfer but i was denied all of this. All attempts that i have made to reach out to the higher ups have been disregarded. Everyone's always on vacation or don't know who's who. But this won't go away. Someone will be held accountable

First time there, everyone was so polite and very helpful. Everything went so smooth and on time. Would highly recommend this hospital.

Dr. Danuta Kassur was great! I have been looking for a doctor who is thorough, answers your questions, takes the time to understand your health, and has a great personality. These are important to me when I consider a doctor, and I have to look no more.

I am VERY disappointed. My mom is in ICU and Makalya (not sure if I spelt it right)but she needs to have better Customer Service answering the phones when worried family members are trying to check on their family member due them trying to work as well and cannot be at the hospital to be told "yea I know who this is we have caller id and you always are calling"... Well I'm not always calling, I try to space out my calls being I know the nurses are busy. You need to understand that family members are concerned and when they call they don't need the attitude!! If you don't like your job go somewhere else. I really hope this experience gets better!

Reviewer Summerville

A family member had an issue requiring a visit to the emergency room. We drove from Summerville. My family member was promptly seen. Eugene was wonderful and put her at ease. Jenn, her nurse, was caring. Her physician, Dr. Jennings, took time to answer our questions and explained the treatment she received. No one enjoys having to visit an ER. However, if the circumstances in life require you do so, Roper is the best.

Brittany Petrus

Best care I have ever received at a ER! The whole staff between the front desk, nurses, doctors, and lab techs were so amazing and actually cared. They were fast and thorough. I never had to wait or question any part of my visit. I had went to the Trident ER on Monday prior to tonight's visit and was there for hours, never saw a dr, was diagnosed incorrectly, and left still in pain. After getting worse since that visit, my mother in law suggested Roper and I'm glad she did. I feel so much better already and they got me on the right treatment plan to get to feeling better! I would suggest this hospital to anyone! Great experience all around!

Jan Ward

As a new patient of Dr. Erika Urban I was treated kindly and professionally by all the office and professional staff. Dr. Urban was pleasnat caring and listened to my concerns.

sean rad

My dad was transferred here from MUSC to begin rehabbing a spinal injury. I don't think you can ever objectively know whether improvement to a spinal injury is Luck or God or the Doctor, but at the end of the day, he is making remarkable progress. The staff has been pleasant to work with as they teach him techniques to move around and strengthen his muscles. He has a couple sessions of rehab each day. It seems like they are coaching him to continually improve at a manageable pace.

Maxine Lewis

This hospital used to be one of the best. Are they hiring only negative and rude people here? My mother is having a hard time breathing and they are releasing her. I'm posting for future reference. How do they sleep at night

Blair Aquilia

Dr. Lewis is awesome!

Nadirah Bates

These people are really not friendly my friend was told she was pregnant and they were not comforting at all ! The nurses were Really rude..

Rowan Enzo

This is one of the greatest hospitals. My mother was in here from 6/22 -6/24 due to her blood sugar dropping into the 40s due to the medication her PCP gave her.. with all the worry and stress going on, the staff was making sure not only my mother was alright, but I was as well. The nurses went out of thier way to make sure my mother was comfortable and monitored closely and constantly. It put me at ease. The doctors explained everything to my sister and I so we could understand. They even let our family know what was going on and what was going to happen and the treatments they were doing and what was wrong. They even at discharge time gave me a packet of stuff with information on proper dietary and things to do if her blood sugar ever dropped like that again! Our nurse at discharge was Amazing and talking with us as we left! The cleanliness of the staff was up to uniform as well! They even checked in with us for the next week after she had gotten home!

Evelyn Hardee

Dr. T. Sisodia is my favorite doctor. She was very caring and rendered a very professional services to me. My health is improving due to her thorough study and analysis of my case. Her advice builds up my confidence that I would be able to reach my goal regarding my health issues. Thanks, Doctor T.Sisodia, you're great!!!!.

Like any other big hospital you have to pay for parking but the service is very good . Haven't been here 20 minutes and I've been checked in, registered, and in a room. The doctor has already came in to check out the problem

Went in for a shoulder dislocation at Roper by Musc. Dr. Clarkson and Ann the R.N. we're fantastic, and caring.

Tj Mccutcheon

I wouldn't give them 1 star if I could. Employees always standing around never tell you any info and like to keep you as long as possible and make you do test that has nothing to do with why you are there so they can run your insurance up. Wouldn't recommend to anybody

While on vacation in Charleston SC, my wife had to go to the emergency room with unknown cause of pain in back and abdomen at midnight. The ambulance carried her to Roper Hospital emergency. From the time we arrived until the time we departed the doctor and staff was great. They found the problem and we able to return home in Alabama to have surgery for gall stones. The staff even called me to check on her condition on the way back home. I strongly praise the night shift staff. They are professional and caring. I would recommend them to anyone.

Worst Er visit I’ve ever encountered. Will not take my child’s insurance so we have to pay out of pocket even though he has converage. We were on vacation so this ruined it.

My mom was at Roper Hospital on Tuesday November 28th 2017. I want to give a special thanks to Mary Frances, Vivian, Rick, and Dr. Maile. They were all so kind. We were in and out of there pretty quickly! So glad we went here instead of to MUSC. All the nurses, staff, and even the security guard went above and beyond that day.

Dr. Chris Hawk has saved my life ... oh, several times now!! What I like most about Dr. Hawk is the way he gives you news -- good or bad -- in a way that you can clearly understand. There is no 'beating around the bush' ... you get it straight! I have been Dr. Hawk's patient since 2002 when I had breast cancer ... then a colon re-section ... then lung cancer and CyberKnife RadioSurgery ... then lymphoma ... and now possibly lung cancer again. But I know that I have one of the very best doctors in Charleston on my team!!!

Ms. Frenchie in ambulatory is amazing!! She is so kind and friendly. She made us feel so welcome and when my boyfriend was having his knee surgery she just made me feel so reassured and welcome. The waiting room is clean and offers complimentary charging stations for your phone and also complimentary coffee and tea. The cafeteria offers lots of things but is very confusing to navigate and I found it a bit intimidating. I also visited the gift shop and found their prices very affordable for a gift shop. The recovery room was nice as well. The free valet parking was the icing on the cake for us. All in all, it was a pleasant experience- as pleasant as surgery can get, lol.

Laura Corelli

Laziest inept bunch of people I came in with chest pains and probably the flu and have been shoved in a room for almost an hour with nothing I got myself a washcloth and nobody is helping me

Scott Havsy

Thought I broke my shoulder and went to the ER. Check in was fast and curtious. Not very busy. Staff was excellent. Andy the X ray tech was very personable. The lady doctor on duty was very knowledgeable. As a retired doctor I found this ER experince top notch. Fortunately I had nothing more than a severe contusion.. Would go back for sure.

Bonnie Walsh

We were sent to Roper ER as my husband had severe pains in stomach. The receptionist was very understanding, friendly, caring and helpful. The nurse in triage was very nice getting him checked in and such. Back in the room he was treated with understanding. DR. Maile was very concerned, listening. Making sure my husband got the care he needed. Everyone just fantastic and a plesant experience. Thank you for a job well done and I recommend going if anyone needs emergency care.

Dr. Rudolph was very courteous and professional, and he seemed truly interested in my case. He was honest about what he could and could not do for my pain issue. The method of treatment we decided on is working very well for me and I am comfortable and active again. I very much appreciate Dr. Rudolph's help and will be grateful of future care as it is needed.

Jenna Speigel

Extremely rude I walked out

lena murdock

I am a new patient of Dr. Rudolph. He is knowledgeable and most efficient in evaluating my problem and gettng the MRI quickly and seeing me back to discuss my options. I am very pleased with him. His staff is efficient and kind and Courteous. I am so glad I was referred to Dr. Rudolph and his staff.

As a Google Map Guide, I feel it is essential to share this experience. horrible experience with Roper Hospital. I was charged an additional $2000 for routine blood work that usually costs $50 anywhere else in town. Insurance and payment were provided in advance so that I would receive an accurate estimate and owe very little if anything afterwards so there is zero excuse for the billing to be so far off on this matter I disputed the bill with Roper 's Billing & Customer Service Department which was very inefficient and required a tremendous amount of my time and after 2-months of continuing to be harrassed by their collections while in dispute, was that the estimate that i was given and paid for before the visit was not correct and I was responsible for the entire bill. The people that interacted with put little thought and effort into investigating the matter. I am in the process of hiring an attorney so it will probably cost more money but i want to be sure this doesn't happen to anyone else. The staff was nice during the visit although I did wait longer than other places but this has been a huge headache after the fact and I would not advise anyone to use Roper until they figure out how to provide an accurate estimate, improve pricing and most importantly, customer service and billing.

Ashley

Went here for a celiac plexus block to confirm my diagnosis of MALS earlier this year. The nurses were very friendly and eased my fears that I had about the procedure and medications. Everything went smooth and I was able to eat afterwards. Thank you!

Emily Clark

Robert Torrealba

The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Everything about my experience was exceptional except for the fact that they gave me the wrong crutches after surgery and then a few days later when I was able to start walking again and realized that they were too big, they refused to exchange them. They said they could charge me for another set but could not exchange them even though they have never been used. Nobody should have to deal with shoulder and armpit discomfort for the month that They'll be on crutches because of a clerical error. Really left a bad taste in my mouth since it was their mistake to begin with.

Brenda Rushing

?Great hospital!

Walter Lapinsky

I was schedule for a X-ray and CT scan at Roper St Francis. Prior to the hospital called me and told me that my copay would be $254. I gave them my credit card. They charged my credit card on a June 20. I did my X-ray on June 3 and CT scan June 10. Both experiences were very good. Staff at hospital very good. In July I started receiving bills for the X-ray. One for $386. After paying $254 up front I wondered why another bill. I called Roper Customer Service but was told that the computers were down. I then called my insurance company. They said that they had received the bill for the X-ray and paid it. They had not receive the CT scan bill. When telling about my receiving bills from hospital I was informed that my total copay for both procedures should be $48. Also they would call the hospital to investigate. The reason for this review is I wonder if others go through an experience with Roper or any hospital and just pay the bill without questioning. My opinion is that Ropers finance department is not very good or billing on purpose. My advise is to call your insurance company when you receive a bill from any hospital that you receive care.

Kourtney Grant

The nurses Here are terrible I had a horrible experience with a short nurse with black hair named Ann she was very rude and nasty. If you don’t want to work in the hospital don’t do it. Roper needs to hire ppl who love their job and not just the paycheck. I was pregnant and very sick and she made it a point to be disrespectful asking me about my personal sex life

Jennifer McNelis

Kevin Eberle

The medical/rehab services were good. However, the business side of things is a train wreck. Check-in is a disaster even when someone is "working" at the desk, which is infrequent. Good luck if you ever have to call anyone for anything. Plan on being on hold for 15 minutes at least for even simple questions.

I always go to roper hospital west Ashley I will always go there . The doctor send my son to roper hospital downtown it was the worst experience anyone could have . It's hard to believe the same hospital at 2 driffenert places can be so driffenert but they are completely. It wasn't the doctor he was great the nurses were terrible .

Took forever to get the papers to be discharged.

My son had surgery at Roper this past week, the nursing staff could not have been better! They saw how anxious he was and accommodated his every need. They helped him through a very stressful time with kindness and understanding.

Poor customer service and staffing in the cafeteria, or maybe it's just awful discriminatory company policy? But my husband is working on the construction staff and was kicked out of the cafeteria today being told they don't serve workers.

Dr. Flowers is the most amazing doctor that I have had the pleasure of meeting. I'm so glad that I found him and his staff to help me. I was nervous in the beginning, but after my first appointment, I felt like I could go back with any problem. Thank you, Dr. Flowers!

My first visit with Dr Keller at the North Charleston facility was very informative, the staff were very pleasant and helpful and Dr Keller showed true interest in me as a person. Thanks Dr Keller

My Father required rehab after bladder stone surgery. He couldn't walk, eat or function well on his own at all, yet prior to the surgery he was independent. At 86 we now know, "routine surgery" isn't so routine. Nevertheless, once in Roper Rehab, he was in capable and attentive hands. He recovered fully in 1/3 the time and the communication with family and patient by every member of staff helped make his recovery rapid and successful. Dr. Nicholson, Linda Collins, All the nurses, All the physical therapists, All the aides-Perfectly performed and my dad and our family are grateful.

Tracy Smith

I was an out of town visitor and I was admitted before my papers were even printed. The nurses and staff were great and the doctor not only took care of my immediate needs, but made sure I was taken care of for the remainder of my stay in Charleston:) UPDATE: At the time I visited the hospital, I didn't have my insurance card and told them to just bill me and I would have been home in Wisconsin where I accidentally left my card. They didn't hesitate or give me the bare bones treatment like other docs and dentists have in the past when I was self pay. I was taken care of to the best of standards despite the note that I was a self pay patient. When I received the bill which reflected every charge, I called them with my insurance information and it was processed without any issues. I stand by my rating.

Dr.John McFadden: Dr. McFadden provided exemplary advise, surgery and after care. He had consulted with my wife on a previous occasion with similar excellent results. He is also an interesting person and a pleasure to communicate with on non medical matters! Thank you

While the staff is very friendly. I find it very disappointing that the parking garage has a fee. Came to see my mom, and it was already a rough night with it all. You really need 2+ more dollars when my family is already going to owe you thousands...

Amanda Jenkins

I had two surgeries there and the staff was wonderful. I won't go to a different hospital ever again.

Richard Darrow

Myself and my wife were on vacation when she had an emergency medical issue. I drove her to Roper Hospital ER, and from start to finish they were simply wonderful. We were treated with kindness and compassion and some of the best medical care I have ever seen. Thanks for making a scary situation another reason to love the low country.
