Oct 3rd my husband and I were hiking in the Linville Gorge Wilderness when he was stung by yellow jackets. This brought on anaphylactic shock which was an extreme reaction. The closest hospital was Linville. Our experience was excellent. The treatment was promoted and effective Nurse Jerry and his trainee were respectful and keen to explain what was happening. Dr Williams also spent time chatting with us and helping us understand the implications of what had happened. We could not have hoped for better care. Would give 6 stars if I could.
Only reason I gave 3 stars is for the nurses, and admission.
I went to this emergency room for severe pain in my neck, ear, jaw, eye & back; & was seen by Heidi Aldridge. First, she had me take a urine test for "pain". That should've been a warning of what was to come. Second, she came into the room, with her arms crossed & an angry energy about herself. Asking me why I was there, that by looking at me, she seen no 'emergency'. Told me before examination (which was her using her little flashlight, looking into my ear and eye for about 45 seconds), that the emergency room was for emergencies, 'a heart attack, broken bones..' with such an angry tone of voice. As she held my medication allergy list in her hands (i am highly intolerant and allergic to all pain medications), she accused me of being there only for pain medications. I specifically told her I was there for an answer, for knowledge, for help to see what was happening to me. By this time, I was under going a severe panic attack because of her emotional abuse. She did not take any time to actually examine me, only had very harsh words & extremely bad energy to lash upon me. I left there crying, and had one of the worst panic attacks of my life, sitting in their Emergency Room parking lot for over an hour. Since then, I have been diagnosed with scoliosis, cervical kyphosis, a twisted c6 vertabre, bone spurs on c5 & c6 vertabre, severe tmj, sinusitis, & multiple pinched nerves. I contacted the Appalachian Regional District Health Customer Service about her behavior. If I had the means & resources to obtain a lawyer over her emotional abuse & patient neglect, I would. In her position, she had no right to treat me this way & it is a day I will never forget. I wish I would've video taped the experience so I could show the world how I was treated by Heidi Aldridge. I recommend to anyone, stay away from her, unless of course, your illness is not "invisible."
My mother was a patient at Cannon for the last 3 days, and could not have ask for any better care. All the staff was just excellent. They actually had her "spoiled" by the time she left. The food was excellent as well.
Doc and nurses were uncaring and because i and my mom fell asleep in the room after setting for 4 hours or longer waiting on the worthless people they didn't do anything but a xray to tell us that my mom's rib was broke and told us we could go home and wrote her some naproxen that we could've bought at the store. Then because we had fell asleep they had the hospital rent a cop come take my keys and gave me a sobriety test twice cause they said we was impaired because we fell asleep waiting on the worthless dumb people. The rent cop even told me he could arrest me and give me tickets if I drove off! Don't go to this place if you actually need help and have something bad wrong with you like broke ribs! I'd give less than a one start if it would let me. The doc was Douglas Shields and the rent a cop was Barlow! Watch out if you have no choice but to go to this vet clinic cause i wouldn't take my dog there!
Worst service Ive ever had. Nurses were uncaring, uncompassionate and unprofessional. Waited to see dr for over half hour. When we inquired, we were told they were "backed up" because they had recived "two patients back to back. My husband and I actually laughed. Dr. was cold and uncaring - actually asked me what made you come to the Er? What did you think was your emergency that you had to come to the ER?" (I had a bowel blockage) Next nurse didn't speak even when spoken to. Just did her thing. I asked her several questions and was just blatantly ignored. Told we had to "wait for dr. to discharge you." Waited and waited and waited over 1/2 hour. We left. Tje only reason I gave them one star is because you don't have the option of giving minus stars.
I experienced verbal abuse from another patient while I was a patient at Cannon. She routinely called me homophobic slurs The staff to the best of my knowledge did nothing about it. One incident occurred in front of a Behavioral Health Therapist while we where outside. The person calling me names started yelling calling me a homophobic slurs, although the Behavioral Health Therapist rushed her to the door and let her go back inside, all she said to her is why are you so mad? Never once did she say anything to me about what just happened. It would have been nice if she said, I'm sorry she attacked you like that, we can't control what other patients do or say, or will take measures to keep that from happening again. The five days I spent at Cannon I was continually verbally abused by that patient. Staff clearly heard it, and never once told her to stop. If they did they never told me. One of the reasons I suffer from trauma is the verbal abuse I received as a teenager. I came to the Cannon Hospital Behavioral Unit because I wanted to die, and feeling the worst I've felt in my life. I didn't deserve to be made to feel worse because of another patient. At times I didn't even feel safe because of her. One of the patients outburst towards me was in the dining room. Once again the staff just asked her why are you so angry? Never once acting concerned about how I felt being verbally attacked. After that I felt afraid of going into the dining room if she was in there. I never retaliated to the verbal abuse from the other patient until the day I left. She called me in my opinion the worst thing you can call another human, and that is a child molester. In retaliation I called her a name in return. I regret I did that, but I was at my wits end that the staff did nothing to stop her verbal abuse towards me. I clearly asked them to protect me from her on three occasions. Plus I didn't have to go to them to complain, because they clearly heard the things she was saying about me. I feel they felt more concerned about the other patient instead of me. I especially felt that way when it came to a Behavioral Health Therapist. Who clearly had favoritism to the patient who kept attacking me. The same therapist was also supposed to give me a book when I first arrived at Cannon to help with my therapy. She did not do that and when I discussed that the day before I went home she came to my room and said here is your book. I told her that is not my book, I wasn't given one till the day before. She told me it is because I had signed my name and had written in it. I clearly told her I did not and that wasn't even my handwriting. It was as if she was trying to cover her tracks for not giving me the book in the first place. When I came to Cannon Hospital I should have only had to focus on my treatment and getting better, and not on another patient. I thought I was okay with the verbal abuse I received at Canon, but as more time goes by I'm clearly not.
Had several procedures at Cannon and I was very happy with the doctors, nurses and staff. They went above and beyond to see that I received excellent care. This is a 5 star facility!
Unprofessional and unhelpful staff. They only care about profit not the people.
Very bad experience, was in a room with my boyfriend who was very sick and I was told I could sleep in his room tonight , at 1:00 am a nurse comes in and tells me I have over stayed past visiting hours . I explained to her I have permission to spend the night with him. So she led me out of the room and said she would show me to an area with a couch I could sleep on. I said I don't understand why all of the sudden I am being kicked out , her response was " well we bent the rules for you too much already" she brought me to the waiting room where there was no couch and rudely kept repeating that she had bent the rules. So I said I understand I took a seat. She said " you're not suppose to sleep in the waiting area " . This is childish and rude and all of the nurses stood around watching while I was being told this. It was inconsiderate and unprofessional.
Staff was very kind would go back as patient but needed medication switch for bipolar beds were full so went me to Frye in Hickory were got busted arm let's say went down hill n Dr's at cannon won't see me for false report from Frye but can't blame them
I had the privilege to be a patient in Cannon Memorial Hospital. I enjoyed the staff and the stay it's self. They have helped me in ways they probably couldn't believe. I would like to think that I was also helpful during my stay. I love u guys. Y'all know who you are. Thank You All. Love Miss. Becky
Feels odd giving a hospital 5 stars, because being here is never a good thing. I broke my should boarding at Sugar and the staff here were fantasist. They were extremely efficient, professional and caring, and extremely accommodating. I was driven there by ambulance and high on meds when I left. They actually called a local officer and he drove me and my younger son back to my car to grab some things before getting a ride home. They truly were great and I appreciate help.
Nobody really enjoys visiting the ER, but I will say that our recent visit was a positive experience. The doctors and nurses were all very attentive and caring. We were there for somewhere around 6 hours or more, and we never went more than 30 minutes without someone checking in on us. Treatment began basically as soon as we got there, and no time was wasted waiting to be seen or waiting on paperwork. We were even pleasantly surprised at how quickly test results came back! We were kept informed during the whole process and were even given choices in my son's care. My husband has also had a good experience getting stitches/staples (as good an experience as one can have in that situation!) I rarely write reviews, but I am very grateful for the staff and the care we received.
Only reason im giving 2 stars is because of nurses and administration. They are the only reason worth going most doctors are overpaid and not held accountable for the things they say and do.
My daughter was a patient here for a few days and learned more about taking charge of her health than I could have imagined. They treated her with respect and spoke with her as an equal. I am thankful for all they did for her in what started out as a scary situation. Also it is a beautiful facility.
This place is such a joke. They may be great for some things but be prepared to sit here for hours on end. My husband went in with trouble breathing and chest pain and they did an EKG which was normal and barley touched him after that. Just hooked him up and saw other people. Disappointed, I’ve seen them faster than Watauga. Also they don’t give patients their call bells which is a big no no. My husbands was rolled up...and he had no way to check and see what the next steps were....we will be calling someone this coming week.
Doc and nurses were uncaring and because i and soon fell asleep in the room after setting for 4 hours waiting on the worthless people they didn't do anything but do a xray to tell me that my rib was broke and told me i could go home and wrote me some naproxen that i could've bought at the store. Tbe rent chip even told my son he could arrest him and give him tickets if he was to drive off! Don't go to this place if you actually need help and have something bad wrong with you line broke ribs! I'd give less than a one start its it would let me. The doc was Douglas shields and the tent a cop was Barlow! Watch out if you no choice but to go to this very clinic cause i wouldn't take my dog there!
It's the best hospital I have ever been in.
Great Emergency Care, Very good Staff and Doctor last weekend Recommend this any Time Thank you for taking care of me Best regards Peter
Evacuated from Hurricane Florence to Banner Elk and my little one spiked a high fever and was not her usual happy self after multiple hours of not being able to comfort her we decided to take her to the hospital. Took her here to be checkout and Dr.Shields, and Carl,Rn took awesome care of her. Pretty quick visit, and they were very helpful.
Great staff my experience there was very pleasant.
