REVIEWS OF Speare Memorial Hospital IN New Hampshire

I was in Lincoln on vacation when I woke up early morning with a bad stomach ache that seemed to get worse. I figured it was just something I ate but after a brief phone consultation with a friend who’s an MD and shooting pain that doubled me over I realized that it wasn’t something I ate but something more. I spent Friday hopped-up on morphine. A CT-scan discovered a severely blocked intestine. The first thought was to rush me into surgery but then they decided to wait and see if it would resolve itself without having to operate. It didn’t. After a few hours of no progress the decision was made to operate. Within 30 minutes I was in the OR. They were able to go in laparoscopically and resolve the issue without having to gut me like a deer and remove some intestine. All I have are three holes (two small and one large) on my side and zero pain. Not my local hospital but the staff here was amazing - Shana and Henry (a fellow hiker) in the ER; Michael (a fellow hiker), Barbara, and Brenda in the ICU; the surgical team of Dr Koren, Jaime, and Ray; and Kim and Carol in recovery.

literally the worst hospital i’ve ever been to. they’re absolutely awful there. i don’t understand how this hospital is still standing after all of the awful experiences i’ve heard from not only my family, but so many other people. i would describe my bad experiences but the list would never end. if you don’t want to die and want to get treated professionally by staff that knows what they’re doing, don’t go to speare.

My son attends PSU and this was our first time at Speare Memorial. I took him to the emergency room today. I couldn't have been more pleased with the entire experience. The emergency department was very busy but each staff member we encountered made us feel as if we were the only ones there. We weren't rushed at all! My nerves were rattled on the trek up to the college because I wasn't sure how sick my son was and I wasn't familiar yet with Speare. Well...the care he received was thorough, professional, and compassionate. His care was overseen by David, who took the time to learn about my sons complex medical history. He is very good at his job and he took the time to talk to my son and explain things in depth. His bedside manner couldn't be any better! Ian was one of the nurse's on staff and was fabulous. He too, took the time to be thorough with explaining things to my son. They are both assets to the hospital .The ladies working the reception area and the triage nurse were all friendly and helpful, too. It sure makes a big difference in my peace of mind knowing David is on staff both at Speare and at the PSU Health Center.

I have to say the Dr and the two male nurses were amazing. I brought my son and his friend in after rolling a side by side. They were treated so great and their sense of humor with the two boys was amazing it really made a scary situation so much better...they were serious at one point and did lecture them on safety but thank you to all staff for the experience...the boys are ok a little sore today but they are ok

PATIENCES BEWARE: Dr. Young is now with Spear this is scary, he killed my husband in 2014 by not doing the proper testing and he makes notes in your file but never tells his patients. God Help Anyone That Sees Dr. Young

I'm currently sitting at the ER with my daughter. Talk about rude personnel. Snippy, snide remarks. When I had all the available information but left it in the waiting room with the other parent. Heaven forbid. Pretty sure this woman's name is Deb. (Heard from another nurse) This is why I normally travel to Dartmouth in Lebanon. This isn't the first time I've experienced rude and condescending behavior here. At least they're a step up from Laconia when it comes to medical treatment. It has taken all of my will power to remain happy, smiling and cooperative. If my daughter didn't need medical attention, and now, we'd walk right out the door.

Mixed bag. I once called the emergency room with what I thought was an urgent condition and received a rude reply. I get it, they're in a rush and I seemed like an idiot, but please be nice. I was already down and out, no need to kick me too.

I'm only give this hospital a 2 star rating. Not because of the nurses, techs, or the doctors. They were all polite, kind, and very professional. It is because of the non-patient care department. Specifically, billing. It took them over 6 months to get me my hospital when my insurance company finalized and approved of the bill within a few weeks and replied back to the hospital.(I spoke to the insurance company). My bill was sent to me at the most inconvenient time of the year. December. The billing department is all over the board as far as their timing. It is interesting that we will get nailed and penalized heavily if we don't pay our bills on time. However, a hospital is allowed to take their time.

They forced me to put one star they deserve a negative 100 stars. My Dad died the day after they diagnosed him and sent him home with blood clots!!!! RIP MY BEAUTIFUL DADDY!

Krista Sterling

Very very rude receptionist. Did not appreciate her yelling at me while simply trying to make an appointment. I wouldn't go there if I didn't have too that is for sure. I will get my drug screening done and never go again!!! Rude rude rude.

John Duggan

staff was very rude. couldn’t diagnose me with anything only ever ran a strep test. when i went home from PSU the next day i went to an urgent care who performed multiple tests and found out what was wrong. STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOSPITAL. MULTIPLE BAD EXPERINCES. STAFF SUCKS.

I was just in the er with my son who had a head injury. I have to say it was the WORST experience I have ever had there. They wouldn’t even let me see him right away and when they DID finally let me back they had a horrible attitude and I’m pretty sure the kind woman who brought me back got in trouble for bringing me. The nurse was INCREDIBLY rude to me several times. Dirty looks we’re flying, snide comments were made by the staff. I have just NEVER seen this side of that staff. Incredibly disgusted with their behavior with my family and I.

I went in for a wound recheck today. The doctor that came in had terrible bed side manors. Treated me as a nobody. Left the bed way up in the air. I was supposed to have my wound covered and after then uncovered it, I had to ask them to cover it back up.

If it was possible to give this hospital negative stars I absolutely would. I'll start with a backstory of how I was already not a fan of this place from my very first visit with them. I am a 2nd year student at Plymouth State University and have been to this hospital on a few occasions for different things. The very first time that I went there, the people working the front desk who were in charge of registration for insurance and everything had absolutely no idea how to process my insurance even though I had a valid insurance card. As most other reviews have mentioned, many of the workers are very inconsiderate and disrespectful to their patients especially if there is any slight inconvenience that they have to deal with. They were seriously considering denying me service simply because they could not process it, and after almost an hour of going back and forth and me basically saying they have no right to deny me service for their stupidity they figured it out. The second incident I had with them was just a few days ago. Strike number 1 starts when I initially tried calling them multiple times to make an urgent appointment and kept getting no answer for almost an hour. When I showed up in the emergency room and explained to them that I tried to call, they very rudely insisted that I was calling the wrong number and after I read to them the number that I called they said it wasn't their main number. Finally, I was helped by the front desk and here is where strike number 2 happens. I very coherently spelled out my last name "SHAFFER" and somehow the receptionist got "SLHAFFER". No idea how an "L" slipped in there or even would make sense to any normal human to be in a last name like mine, but thankfully I caught it before we went too far since they failed to even let me double check the information. Strike number 3 happened during my visit when the doctor's did not take my symptoms seriously. I went into the emergency room on suspicion of a kidney infection (which I've had before so I am very familiar with the symptoms) and I was told that I had a simple UTI even though all of my symptoms were consistent across the board with a kidney infection. They sent me home with the typical take home packet of information and ironically enough, under the section that says "get help right away if:" almost every single one of the symptoms that I came in with and told the doctors about was on this list. (see image) But I guess it wasn't a big enough deal for them to deal with at the time of my visit? The last strike is basically just a sign of extreme unprofessionalism. I had asked for a note to excuse me from classes that I was missing (9/17/18-9/18/18) and they gave me one. Unfortunately I did not realize that they had written the complete wrong date on the note (12/18/18) and it it just beyond me that people could be so unprofessional to mess something up that bad (see image) All in all, I will never, ever be returning to Speare with any medical problems that I have and instead will endure the 40+ minute drive all the way to Concord because its worth the drive to get even slightly better service than this place offers. Absolutely do not go here or support this business.

Came late Sat after a minor hiking injury and within 50 min we'd consulted the doc twice, been xrayed twice, treated, and released! Fastest ER visit ever!

I have a canal ear infection, and I was in so much pain last night. The dr (Nicholas Weinberg) that treated me was so rude and kept shoving the flashlight in my ear so hard as he knew it hurt and I could not stop crying. He then told me there was nothing they could do and told me to come back in the morning . So I left the hospital and made my way over to LRGH where they took much better care of me. I recommend you avoid Speare Memorial if possible, or atleast this Doctor !!!!!

I brought my daughter to the emergency room with a back injury. She had been performing and felt something pop in her back and was in extreme pain. She was brought in to a room and essentially left there for 5 hours. They didn't offer pain medication or ice for hours and only gave her something when I asked repeatedly. They did a urine sample and blood tests but never did x rays on her back. They gave her a bedside ultrasound and then sent us home with instructions to follow up with our primary care Dr. Turns out she had broken her back!!! Don't go to this hospital with a serious injury.

My wife who is a retired nurse is here with a broken leg and she has been raving about the high quality of care especially the nursing care. Also, she has had doctors spend over an hour explaining the plan of care. Highly recommended.

Excellent hospital! Superior care, good diagnostics. The art of medicine is rare to find.

It would be worth you time to drive to lrgh or Lincoln. You life depends on it!

Amazing people. I went in to the ER miserable unable to swallow. Charles took my vitals and was very polite and friendly. When I was brought to a bed 4 nurses had to try and find a vein. I’m so afraid of needles and knowing that everyone was very gentle. My head nurse Jane was amazing and god bless Jenna for finally getting my blood. Not the best way to kick off vacation but it was incredible heath service and amazing bedside manner on everyone’s part.

I have no complaints about the doctors or staff. Care my family received was good. The issue with Spear is the billing department. I went to the ER in Sept2018. Spear decided they would bill the VA, but I wasn't enrolled with the VA. I was active duty and had Tricare. Every month I get a letter from VA, that states they denied the claim. I have called billing 4 times to them the insurance information 4 times for Tricare. The last two times I even gave the lady at billing the phone number to Tricare claims department, with the ext to the man at tricare I talked to that said Tricare will cover it as I was active duty at the time of care. I thought this would solve the proble, but today I received another letter from the VA. Spear again found a way to mess this up. So take all what is said above and switch my name out for my wife's and that is her story with billing at Spear. I called billing, gave all her insurance information, phone to the claims department for her insurance to assist with the claim processing and again her bills come rolling in. If billing doesn't want to do their job, at least stop harassing us about it, I did all I could and more to get a proper claim sent to the right place and Spear billing department does all it can to mess up a wet dream and then some.

Our daughter in law suffered a broken leg. She was admitted to Speare Memorial for treatment. Our son stayed with here the entire time. The staff was just awesome. They treated her and him with great care. We saw first hand upon our arrival just how great everyone was. Thank you for being the best. Our family truly appreciates you.

Thank you Speare Memorial Hospital I would like to express my utmost gratitude to all the employees and medical staff of Speare Memorial Hospital for their tremendous care, kindness and generosity during the birth of our daughter.

Although I haven't experienced immediate urgent care I'm not in a position to say anything about that, some of the staff seems motivated though for either less or more critical care..but have been met with pretty ruuude and ignorant staff. I have seen an ob gyn there recently, who quickly diagnosed me, as having a miscarriage. They preformed a pretty short ultrasound to hear a hr. After yet not hearing one on Doppler. I was told and nearly fainted and received no support but was quickly advised to have a surgical operation asap. I soon left and against her advice have decided I wasnt comfortable and felt more could have been done as far as testing and medical care after nearly passing out. It seems to me everything is fine the baby is moving and I will be getting care elsewhere.

Katie Samolyk

One of my worst hospital experiences

Tucker McGaw

Went here after getting a concussion from playing rugby. They did a CT scan for some reason. I still don't know why.

Tim Woodward

Twice the ER has almost killed me. Once when my appendix ruptured and once when my gallbladder went homicidal. Misdiagnosed both times.

Sean Birchall

Speare Memorial Hospital lost my referral number and sent me a $4k bill 8 months after PT treatment. Another 3 months after that my referral number was found. Started case review between Speare and my Insurance to get coverage. Now I am still stuck with a bill that is between 3k - 6k? every time I make a payment or ask for my balance I'm given two separate answers even when called the same day. Letters are sent monthly from Speare threatening to go to a collections agency to ruin my credit score, as well as phone calls. If you are out of state student at PSU (like I was) I would not get treatment of any kind at Speare. . Would give zero stars if I could.

My mother has been here for three days staff all very friendly.. Rooms not the cleanest I've seen. Dr to patients ratio not good.... Could use another Dr on site. Patient get lost in system my mother waited 7 hours in ER to get moved to a room upstairs.. I must say thou the staff here is five stars all super friendly quick with a joke to bring your spirits up. So thus after this im only giving the hospital a three star.

They have been terrible every time we have been in. I have neve been to a less professional place. Ever! For the final straw we had a nurse who was extremity rude! Told the patient that he was : "not allowed to puke in the hospital" and he was sick (before the doctor came in) which was not the case. This was to the point we had to asked for a different nurse.

Dianne Labonte

Partner dislocated his fingers on a hike and was treated here great staff quick and efficient service so glad they are our local hospital! Dr Richardson did an amazing job putting those fingers back in place.

Chrissy Weeks

Terrible sucked

Tom Corson

They did an awesome job putting my tib & fib back in place and the added metal rod & pins also everyone from the beginning to the discharge wheel chair ride out was great Thank you !!!!

Kristine Marceau

Just want to say over the weekend my gram was transported after being revived by me and my husband... I called to find out if i could talk to her and how she was.. the attitude of the female on the phone who directed my call to the her nurse was rediculous! Thats not how you treat people who are concerned about family. I suggest that if her job aggravates her that much, she should choose another career that doesnt involve a hospital and patient services! Have some compassion! And by the looks of other reviews on here, people should go elsewhere, have heard nothing but bad things, peoples lives are at risk!

Dan Morico

Gregory Merrill

Very unprofessional,crude and rude.

Julia Oliveira

Lucas Smith

Still a better hospital than Lrghealthcare.

Dawn Brown

While I hope to never need them again, very professional and thorough at my last visit. I have not been disappointed any time I've been there- for myself nor for a family member. Thankful.

Ron Paul

Went to the ER for burns. Everything was routine until I was asked if I had a recent tetanus shot. I said no but I would not like one. The nurse then got upset and said I'm getting one anyways and forced it on me . That is medical battery. I will never go there again and have been in contact with lawyers.
