REVIEWS OF Omaha VA Medical Center IN Nebraska

20 years now I've relied on the VA for all medical needs being a 70% disabled vet. For the bad rap and press the VA health system gets as a whole lately, in 20 years, the Omaha/Western Iowa VA has never done me wrong. If not for them, I would most likely be one of those without health insurance. It's a government beuracracy, but the health care providers from the top surgeons, to the orderlies, in my experience have always been top notch.

I moved to Nebraska 4 years ago after retiring from the US Navy and getting medically retired by my civilian job. My medical insurance had dropped me and was paying close to 2 grand monthly for two medications of the many i rely on to live. I went to the VA hospital in Omaha and was blessed to get the medical attention that i so much needed. I now feel better and my meds are sent directly to my house and my follow ups are always on time. Dr. Drincik has been an angel sent. Im thankful for his care and dedication to the well being of all of his patients. At the dental facility i met Dr. Mark Bernie. He has transformed my life for the better. My illness has destroyed my teeth and gums and required a lot of work. He is one of the many interns who worked on my teeth but he stands out because of his care, dedication and love for his job that i feel so much better having healthier teeth. Thanks to all the nurses as well, they go the extra mile to help you. Omaha VA is my number one medical facility. Thank you for giving us veterans great service!

Honestly it takes two weeks to see a doctor. Most of the doctors I've been assigned to don't seem to listen or care. Honestly it's just absolutely frustrating to go here.

Even though there is alot of construction going on, there is still enough parking in my opinion. If you do have to park in the boonies, the shuttle bus is good about coming out and retrieving you. The places I went in the hospital were well kept. I have never had a long wait for audiology. The gals up there are all polite, professional, and courteous. They know their stuff. I feel very well cared for and am very thankful for my benefits.

In these days while so many complain and gripe about the VA and the treatment they receive, I would like to post some positive comments. I have had nothing but the very best in health care services from the VA Medical Center in Omaha. That applies to ALL departments I've been treated by, e.g. general healthcare/internal medicine, optomology, and audiology. They all get very high marks from me. I'm treated professionally, courteously, and never rushed. Also every appointment has been timely with virtually no wait. I'm TOTALLY impressed and couldn't ask for better or more complete and timely healthcare treatment!! Today I visited the Audiology Department to get new hearing aids (replacement of older pair) and was served by Dr. Jodi Winfrey. She is a real professional and deserves a special "pat on the back." She was very thorough, professional, and respectful. She was thoroughly knowledgeable of the new hearing aids, explained the features, and did NOT rush to get me out of there. She is a real credit to your staff, and I hope you have some manner or mechanism by which you can pass on my heartfelt comments and thanks! Too often folks are quick to complain and hesitant to compliment. Well, just so you know, she is a very caring professional and one whom you should be proud to have on your staff. Many thanks to her and all the other staff professionals who've made my visits to the Omaha VA Medical Center , positive experiences. Ken Schaefer

This VA is better than most. None of them are great. But, it is far better than Kansas City, St. Louis and Little Rock.

i’ve been to a number of the VA is in the region and although my experience with the VA system nationwide is somewhat limited it does appear that the Omaha VA is centrally located in a good spot but generally the campus needs to be updated. The employees seem generally happy to be here and the campus is well-maintained and clean given it’s aged appearance. That said, they are in the process of an Expansion program to build a new ambulatory care center and new parking facility which are to be billed over the next 4 to 5 years. The cafeteria food is somewhat limited in choice and in quality and unfortunately there are not a lot of restaurants close to this facility. as typical with any federal agency expect too many chiefs and not enough Indians which will make for some delays especially when coming for early-morning laboratory work or radiology work being done. That said, once labs or x-rays are taken they are processed quickly and Efficiently and the electronic medical record system with in this VA seems to have very few downtimes. Overall if they can upgrade the infrastructure to the facility they will gain at least one star on my rating.

Gloria Rosenkrantz

I get excellent care here

Very friend and efficient on helping Vets!! One if the best VAMCs i ever been to!

What a useless healthcare system. Appointments are a month or longer. Same Day Care is an absolute waste of time because they don’t actually provide healthcare. You, the VA, are the Number 1 reason we kill ourselves. Update Jan 13, 2019: I was refused treatment for back pain and nerve damage if I didn’t take a psych evaluation. Since when is a psych evaluation part of injury and already rated injury treatment? Again, You, the VA, are the Number 1 reason we kill ourselves.

Without fail, some old veteran will talk to you about raising children with the girl at your side. He'll ask you, "What are you waiting for?" "Careers," you respond. "Well, you better make some kids to impress your grandparents." "Thinking about it." Another female walks up and the old veteran will pipe up, "Are you married?" The attention loop starts again. Most of these old boys are just looking for someone to talk to.

Rick Kahla

Great service here. Everyone is very helpful and understanding. Every department from the ER, MRI, to the infusion clinic was amazing. Thank you all for taking such good care of our vets!!!

Caring people. Mostly see PA' s and nurses. Rarely see a doctor, but they do their best to take care of patients. Could be cleaner.

After living in Denver for 35 yrs and experiencing the dismal excuse of treatment provided there, what a very pleasant surprise it was to relocate to the terrific city of Omaha and the exceptional care of the VA hospital! The staff, from volunteers to nurses and doctors and everyone in between are truly second to none. As a disabled veteran I thank you for your always kind and caring service.

I used to not have any problems here, but it seems that the obama has exported the problems that were at other VA locations to everyone everywhere! Now it isn't the people working there it would be the liberals in charge in the obama regime and his appointments who are at fault, because if the employees are following the rules that means it's the management. I do wish they had better after business hours. This is a Gun Free Zone and other "weapons" also, this by the way violates the Constitution not only the Second Amendment but the militia clause at Article One Section Eight clause sixteen (it says to "arm" the militia and gun free zones are a disarmament).

The staff at this facility is amazing. It probably did take a little longer than average to get in but that's not entirely this facility's fault. Everyone I've dealt with went above and beyond to make sure I was taken care of. I hope I don't have to come back anytime soon but if I do I'll be comfortable doing so.

Second time at this VA have had broken bones i was told needed surgically set and wait days in agony. First one took 3 months for a consult and a very rude orthapitisr off campus who told me thats what i get for hitting things when he never asked what happened. This time been waiting now 5 days with both bones broke in my arm on my primary hand.

My Father in-law was recently treated at the Omaha VA Medical Center and my wife and I were with him for the entire diagnosis and treatment stay. He received the very utmost excellent care by a very professional Nursing staff and amazing companionate and knowledgeable doctors and staff. nurses (Sally, Erin, Kim, Carry, Trent & Liz) Nicole and Katie where absolutely transparent with my Father in-laws condition, and explained to us what we are facing. Chaplin Shane was an incredible person who comforted us and made things so much easier during our difficult time. My father in-law passed away today 9/25/17 in an honorable and dignified manner. Their dedication to our veterans was obvious and heartwarming. I am glad that high-quality staff and medical care is available to those who served our country in the greatest place of Omaha NE.

So they are on top of cancer. BUT prostate cancer is cured, gone, that was a good thing. The 5 mins of what is considered a consult, however has something to be improved upon as this 5 mins really changes a fellows life. No mental health advise on what to do when your working kadiddlehoffer worked before but the day after Mr. Kadiddlehoffer no longer works...At ALL. Yea no more cancer. BOO no more sex. Think I want the cancer back, no more help than I've been afforded here for dealing with any of this. Screw it. They can read the review as they cover me up with dirt.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. My VA in Omaha has never let me down. Its been there at every tor me. I rely on it for my primary and specialist care needs.

Had appt a 9am, showed up and checked in at 830am. Clerk said I needed labs and to go right over there. Waiting line for labs was 45 mins, lab procedure was 3 mins. Returned to Red Clinic to find that the clerk deleted my check-in because I needed labs. They took the 930am appt ahead of me. 935am returned to the clerk (because there's a sign that says if you haven't been helped in 15 mins notify clerk. Did it she said it would be a few more minutes. 1000am came in and checked with the clerk AGAIN. She went to the back and came out with the nurse right away. No one told her I was waiting. After nurse was done checking my vitals and history, waited another 20 minutes with her for the Dr. Dr. T had the sniffles and kept sneezing and scratching his runny nose during the exam Finally just used hand-sanitizer after everything was over (still didn't was his hands). This is so typical of the VA hospital. They don't care and even worse, don't do anything about complaints. Even the nurse stated the hospital does not listen to their complaints. The notification system, that REMINDS you of your appt, no longer tells you that you'll need labs and need to arrive early. Nurse said that hospital has a NEW program and won't fix that portion. How's a person to know? Perhaps adding the labs notice would be more effective than the fancy return notifications that were added for patients to complete. PLEASE get it together with some COMMON sense. Mark me as a VERY angry vet wasted half a day just to keep my eligibility. Nothing was needed other than that.

I've had good experiences and I've had bad experiences at this VA. They must have had some improvements to their staff training at some point in the last few years because it went from staff complaining about their co-workers on another shift, etc., to a more polite and caring tone, focused more on the patient. As a patient, you shouldn't be subject to the dirt and drama of the staff, who isn't doing their job, who told their spouse to pack up and leave, or whatever. I'm not a counselor, I'm a patient. They seem to have mostly fixed that at this location (hopefully it spreads to others). The rooms are nicer and practically indistinguishable from a civilian hospital. I woke up from surgery five years ago and thought maybe they moved me to military barracks. I had another surgery last year and I was pretty sure something went wrong and I was waking up at a different hospital (it didn't and I wasn't). So, kudos to whomever was responsible for that. Parking is still horrible. Time in the waiting room is still borderline ridiculous at times. The signs say to tell reception if you've been waiting x amount of minutes past your appointment but the best they can do is tell you why because you're still waiting. The downside of this facility is the same as every single VA facility - communication. You have to follow up and follow up and follow up with anything having to do with the VA or you WILL fall through the cracks, especially if you were referred to Veterans' Choice (Lucifer) for a procedure.

Health Care for veterans who served!

I recently moved back to Nebraska after leaving the state 3 years ago. I'm a 100% disabled combat wounded veteran and so one of the first things I go to do is change from my last VA to start being seen at my new VA. On February 22 I call them up and give them my new address and tell them I'd like to set up an initial appointment. They say ok, write down my new information and tell me that they have 7 business days to contact me. Crickets. I then call up again a week and a half into March to see what the hold up is. They say they couldn't contact me and they sent a letter to my old state. I'm fairly frustrated at this point and I contact the patient advocate. They assure me that this will all be worked out and send me back to the appointment people. They take my information again, assure me that they have it correct and state that only one person (How is that reasonable?) can set up initial appointments. I am assured that I will be contacted once again within 7 initial days with my appointment...Crickets. Today I finally get through to the supervisor of the patient advocates and she is very professional and bends over backwards to help me. I finally have an initial appointment for April 17. That would be 56 days after I initially called. To top it off I'm scrolling through these 5 star reviews and I recognize the name of a VA employee!!! Complete shenanigans! The VA has failed me repeatedly and continues to do so. If they put half the effort into veterans that they put into covering things up and quit pretending that a large amount of their staff couldn't care less about serving veterans then we'd all be better off.

S Collins

Odd, I see so many positive comments about availability, getting in, world class care. It's from young people like me yet I don't know any of them. In any case, My experiences seem to be the complete opposite of a lot of what i am reading here. An average 4 star rating? Makes me wonder if this is akin to ballot stuffing. I don't wish to breed negativity but I've tried on and off for the better part of 10 years now to make recommendations for improvement on behalf of the service member and nothing i've recommended has been taken seriously. Nothing I've heard others recommend has been taken seriously. This is very odd that Google gives the impression that this is some sort of state of the art world class customer service ala carte bubble spa new age medical treatment center or something. I'm even trying to find the silver lining to this operation. Oh well, I pray that my experiences are mine alone. They are bad at best.

Phylis Andrews

Lobby was staffed with volunteers that were extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and checked on us at each stage of our visit. Registration window was available and took care of our change of information right away. We visited Prosthetics without an appointment and we were seen right away. They were efficient and suggested a solution to our issue. We have no complaints.

Have had to make a 2hr trip here almost twice a month for the last 4 or 5 years. Although, some days have a seemingly long wait, most days you check in and 5-10 minutes later you're called back. Husband has dealt with a multitude of doctors here and nearly all have been generally helpful and informative. A couple of the specialty doctors were hard to understand or follow though.

Drew Kennan

I took a chance that the VA hospital had greatly improved from my previous experience with them over 15 years. I was pleasantly surprised. I collected my medical records from the hospitals I have been going to and went to the hospital expecting the same atrocious care I had previously experienced. I was actually treated like the doctors cared. They actually looked at the records I gave them and asked what I wanted to happen. When I told them I wanted fixed they didn't brush me off this time. The doctors were actually helpful, polite, and acted like they cared. It seems like a lot has changed in the last few years at the VA hospital.

Jeffrey Moon

Whoever the dude is who answers the phone at mental health seems like he needs more care than I do. Rude and unprofessional. Conversation went like this " I just moved in from Texas do I need to do a change of address?" "Yup call down to admin" can you transfer me? "Nope.. I can put you back to the automated answer" so I can't make an appointment "that's why I said call admin" I'll just call back then "AIIIIGHT THEN" hangs up.

VA Hospital employs typical government workers who think that they are the reason this place is even open. Specialty clinics are usually very good, but the general med clinics are rude, loud and seem to have this need to share your medical information with anyone in earshot. Pharmacy staff is hit or miss. Younger pharmacists are very nice, but the older ones are terrible. The worst part of it all, just imagine having to change Doctors every 6 months... This is the standard here... Ridiculous!
