waited over 8 hours for service that should have taken an hour - staff in the ER has zero respect for your time

The emergency department took very good care of my son and after we were home and we had question they answered within a few rings and responded to every question I had

Yesterday and today was the worst experience I've ever had at Riverside. The only upside was the very caring nurses and nurses assistant. To anyone looking- go across the bridge to the U of M ER by the Phillip Wangsteen Building. Better and FAST care!

The ER trama staff nurses were Excellent a long with the ICU nurses. The doctors on the other hand are a different story. i work in the medical field and when I made a suggestion or would question them about things thet were quick to ignore me and blow me off like who does she think she is I'm the doctor not her. It is also pretty bad when departments are not trained on how to use devices. Correctly and the daughter or husband who have no medical experience have to hook the patient up to the machine after just watching ICU nurses do it. I can say I would. Not recommend this place if you have a choice!

being hesitant about a institution such as this one is easy to do primarily due to the fact that it is a teaching hospital. However, this is also a place where patients can receivesome of thenewest cutting edge treatments available.

Dr. Sembrano did an amazing job on my back surgery. The nursing staff is second to none in every way. They are caring, compassionate and listen. HOWEVER if you ever cross paths with Dr. HSIAO I suggest you either run or just kill yourself. He is a sadist and doesn't care about anything but money and certainly not your health. I'm less than 2 weeks out from a MAJOR back surgery and he tells me he doesn't understand pain management but still cut my pain meds in half. I threw up numerous times and have to have another back surgery to fix the damage from throwing up. I hope some day he suffers like I am and nobody listens! He is truly a horrible doc and should be disbarred. DR. HSIAO AVOID!!!!!

Racist People!!!! I recently admitted my child to the adolescent program and since the first day she was there one of the nurses Emma told her that they lost something and it hasn't happened in 5 years and my daughter was the only colored person there and she's the only one who got searched. The other nurses named Amanda and Peter were saying discramtory words to her!!!!! I would not reccomred this for anyone's child! My daughter now has a lot of trauma do to this.

To that one dude or lady who wrote HCMC from Tennessee you got the wrong hospital! That's not Hennepin County Medical Center that is downtown Minneapolis. Why would you call University of Minnesota Medical Center that is UMMC. I know people that work at both places. On another note the gift shop is no more which was the old one and has a new brand new gift shop and new owner. Don't blame your day because of what one person done when all other people within the hospital actually knows what he/she is doing. That's just unethical to point and blame one person for all others doing.

A wonderful hospital with wonderful docs!

Was put on hold for 30 minutes and once they answered the phone, the man said , “hello” then hung up before I could say hello back.

The nurses care, doctors are skilled, but this is not a healthy organization. They have systems in place that causes mistakes and missteps on a regular basis. If possible, go elsewhere. My adult son had a transplant here and he feels more like a hostage/experiment than he does a patient. Poorly managed, "fair"view at its best!

Teaching Hospital means 3 Drs. for the price of one! Nothing but the "Cream of the Crop" medical professionals. Only the very best Drs. are hired to hold teaching positions! If they don't do it here on the west bank; they do it on the east bank.

Triage nurse. Told me it's first one to check in , is the first one back . Which is totally incorrect. I have been here for 3 hours . With left ovary pain and left leg numbness . Pain scale 10 . With low BP . Then told I was next , and guess what the man that walked in just now. Went to triage went out front smoked a cigarette . Came back in .. he got a room. I'm starting to take this personal . PLEASE IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE THIS IS NOT THE EMERGENCY ROOM FOR YOU !

Called to speak to a nurse. On hold for an hour. To speak to a medical professional. Get more people answering the phones asap.

Wife spent 6 weeks here with a complicated pregnancy, when it was still called Riverside. Nurses on the neonatal wing were EXCELLENT in every single aspect of care. The attending physicians are all teachers to residents and med students, and give some of the best care in the world. Thank GOD the university is keeping those money grubbing bastards from Fairview out of the University. If Fairview takes over, health care will become secondary to makin' money!

I delivered my babies here earlier this year. I can't speak highly enough of the staff in L&D, and the staff in the NICU. The entire medical team taking care of my babies were absolutely wonderful. They were passionate, caring, and attentive. The care given was compassionate and top notch. My babies were born quite early and needed extensive treatment. I am so thankful to the staff. The babies are doing very well thanks to the excellent care team. My older kids are also seen in the University medical center system. They also get the best care around. If your children need medical care, look no further than the University of Minnesota system. You will be very happy. The adult care is a different story, but that's for another review.

I want to thank the transplant team to include the staff that took care of my wife after her surgery. Very professional and caring! Best hospital we have had the pleasure of dealing with. Thank you for helping my wife!

I came to the ER for a mental health crisis. When I was taken in I met with a triage nurse who asked me a few questions and then told me that I would be meeting with a doctor and I would be getting a psych assessment. After three hours, which fair enough it is an ER I get it that it takes awhile, I asked the nurse if there was any info on when I would be seen by the psychologist. They sent in a doctor who was with me for all of 5 minutes and asked me maybe 5 questions. 3 hours later, still waiting for the psych assessment I asked to leave, considering I had been there for 8 hours and they couldn't get a psychologist to see me. Instead the same doctor who had talked to me for 5 minutes came in and told me that I had agreed to be admitted and I wasn't allowed to leave. They wouldn't tell me if or when there would be a bed available and no one would answer as to why I didn't have a psych assessment yet. The next morning, still no assessment. I told my new nurse and doctor that if I didn't get an evaluation I wanted to leave as they couldn't give me any information on why or when I was being admitted. I had to call my mother who drove from 3 hours away to come in and help me communicate because I couldn't understand why all of the staff were treating me like a child and not answering any of my questions. Finally after 17 hours in the ER, I demanded to see the doctor again to ask to be evaluated by literally anybody before I was admitted to the psych ward. He told me I had already been evaluated, but because my mother was there, he told us he would double check. 10 minutes later a psychologist came in the room. They never evaluated me because they were using a psych evaluation on my chart from 2 YEARS AGO and they were going to admit me without me ever actually talking to someone trained in psych issues. Not a single member of the staff thought to check the date and instead threatened me with an involuntary hold if I kept asking to see a psychologist or leave. Needless to say when they realized their mistake I was out of there real quick. Gross incompetence, and the staff are real quick to strip you of your personhood if its a psychological related issue. I don't know how many times I asked to be evaluated by a psychologist, but for 17 hours not a single person thought to double check I had actually been evaluated? Instead they probably just marked me as crazy and moved on. I was treated like a child in trouble instead of someone seeking help. Do yourself a favor if you are in crisis and go to Abbott, where people will actually help you.

I recently had surgery here and had an amazing experience. Everyone we encountered was so kind and helpful. I was so surprised how wonderful the experience was. I even received a get well card from the staff a week after. An overall great experience.

Very costly. It costs $650 to see a primary care physician.

Locate on 2450 Riverside Ave, Minneapolis, Minnesota: great hospital and largest network in the Twincities beside HealthEast and Healthpartner.

Massive snafus and bureaucratic problems were standard. The practitioner said there's nothing wrong with me, even though I've lost 50 pounds in the last year, and I can't eat without experiencing severe pain. I was expecting a higher standard for the University, but I guess that was naïve of me.

AzJaya Martin

Don’t eat here, sleep here, stay here, etc... I am a worker here and I’ve heard rumors that the hospital is infested with roaches, but I didn’t believe it because I never seen one, until today. This hospital has a roach problem and is all throughout the nutrition department and the hospital. Stay here at your own risk.

My wife went in to the ER after a miscarriage. She was suffering from severe cramping pain. The phlebotomist missed her vein and was looking for with his needle. They sent her home without the medicinal shot they wanted to give her because they didn't place an IV. We lost our first child and they made sure to rub it in. Beware Sonia and Michael.

I’m laying in Unit 7B as I write this review. I’ll begin by saying that the emergency department on the east bank was fantastic, and the nurses here on the West Bank have been great as well. However, the overall experience has been so negative that I wouldn’t wish this place on my worst enemy. Every doctor and/or surgeon I’ve worked with here at the West Bank has had terrible bedside manner; I literally ended up in tears after speaking with social services about this issue. It is abundantly clear that, at least in the thoracic department, patient care is not their first priority. Rather, business is. My “doctor” determined that I needed to stay hospitalized based on “symptoms” that I could NOT feel, that he could NOT hear with a stethoscope, and that he could NOT point out the xray images. Obviously, as most patients in this wing are in single rooms, they are more concerned about profit than patients. I’m also on MA, so it’s a guaranteed paycheck. To further exacerbate these issues, I could be at home right now with a water-sealed chest tube. Since I was admitted to the hospital, my vitals have been so normal that nursing only checks up on me when shifts change. Instead, this place would rather waste tax dollars by keeping me here at no benefit to me. The “doctors” and “surgeons” also do not understand the concept of real life. They are all but demanding that I get a surgery without having an answer for two important questions: who will care for me during recovery and how will I be able to pay my living expenses while I am unable to work? It’s not their concern; they wouldn’t care if I became homeless, so long as they receive their paycheck by doing a procedure and keeping me in the hospital. The situation has grown so terrible that I will be leaving tomorrow, even if I must leave against medical advice. It is abundantly clear that these “doctors” do not take their Hippocratic oath seriously; they are only concerned with generating revenue. This review got two stars because, despite how terrible the physicians have been on the West Bank, the nurses here are stellar, as were all of the staff at the east bank emergency department. I can only hope that this institution starts to hold their “doctors” to the same high level of patient care demonstrated by their nursing staff. Update: after receiving false information from a surgical resident that the surgery could be done bilaterally, I decided to proceed with the blebectomy and pleurodesis. Although the surgery went well, the post-operative care I received from the thoracic department was dreadful. I tried to leave AMA but was unable to secure a transfer to HCMC. Particularly heinous was my one interaction with Dr. Madhuri Rau, a thoracic surgeon. She and SIX surgical residents came into my room while I was still experiencing severe pain despite having a dilaudid PCA. I tried to explain to her that I once had a chest tube that was slightly misplaced and, once it was adjusted one or two millimeters, I experienced total relief. She told me that the X-ray (which gives an extremely limited view of soft tissue) looked fine and refused to

One of the slowest hospitals I have ever been to, I came in at 1am with nobody in the waiting room and am just now being released at 5:30am. I came in just to have a boil lanced, friendliness of the staff was not great, it seems like everyone was unhappy to have a job here. I really don't understand why it was rated so high, I am scared of the other hospitals around the town. I pray I will never need to return to a hospital in this state again. I have two holes in my arms from lack of knowledge of starting an IV, I never have had anyone have trouble starting an IV in me and definitely never had it hurt while doing it. I would have probably put up with the pain, if I would have had a clue what the experience was going to be like. I hope things are being worked on to address problems such as mine. I came from Ohio and this experience has made me really appreciate what I have back home.

Place is awesome! Saved my life years ago and now diagnosing a friend after a different E.R. sent him home with severe infection. Amazing teaching facility.

This place robs you both in billing and devices. My daughter had her phone stolen while we were in the ER after the nurses took possession of all her stuff without me in the room, and when I asked for her phone when we could hear the device, the woman somehow couldn't find it. Once I started asking about the phone, we were rushed out of that area without it to another floor. I returned within the hour and no one could find the phone. I spent weeks working security, the staff, and finally the facility administrator without success. The memories lost were priceless. My daughter was having a hard time with life between bullies and her friend committing suicide. Finally after more than three months worth of trying to get the phone or compensation, from Fairview I was informed me they would do nothing and weren't responsible for this situation. My daughter had her phone stolen by a ER nurse, and they did nothing! They didn't even apologize, and blamed it on me since it's my responsibility as a parent. But they stripped her while I was talking to the doctor without me present, stuffed her clothes in a bag and stole her phone!!! Who does that while someone is in a crisis?! Last but not least, our regular clinic referred us here for help with scarring. The doctors and facility charge here since they are independent organizations. For a cortisone shot I was given a $900 bill. For a 10 minute visit and 30 second fix. So yeah this place is legally robbing you. Go someplace else if you can.

Saw two sets of doctors here for my wife's health problems. Both sets were of no help and tried to say she was fine. Even a so-called veteran specialist in her condition said she was fine. They did provide theories. Other doctors have since looked at what they said and have shaken their heads in disbelief at their conclusions. Avoid at all costs.
