REVIEWS OF St. Luke's Hospital IN Minnesota

I don’t know what is happening with St. Luke’s. Instead of sending us a bill in the mail, they send it directly to collections. This has happened to my family twice in the last two years. We pay a copay with every visit as well as every clinic bill we receive. The problem is with hospital billing where they don’t send us any kind of a bill until we hear from a collections agency which includes an extra $300 collections fee. All our information including address is current in their system as we receive other mail and clinic bills from St. Luke’s. They deny any wrongdoing and blame it on a “mailing issue”. I don’t know if the problem lies with them being so understaffed, or their new faulty computer system, but patients are the ones getting duped. Avoiding this hospital from here on out.

Mrs. D

Very kind, carrying, compassionate, understanding, gentle and nice staff. It's usually not a fun visit when your at a hospital but the staff here definitely made it as pleasant as they could.

Last night I had to bring my 1 month old to the ER due to high fever. The Dr that was on was super caring and stayed after his shift for my little one. They checked all possibilities before sending us home. The nurses also checked to make sure I didn't need anything.

Allie Cahoon

Horrible. The ER staff treated me as though I was a "frequent flyer" and like I was over-exaggerating my pain. I've been there once and will never go back. They defiantly act like they are a business and nothing more. If I remembered the name of my nurse I would have called and complained. Do not go here unless it is your last resort.

Alyssa Campbell

I'm so disappointed with their urgent care. It turns out when you send out your bill to insurances it is counted as an emergency room visit. Instead over a $45 copay I have a huge bill and their billing department just shrugs and says they can't help. I suggest folks in the Duluth area avoid this urgent care if they have insurance.

I love my regular doctor with St.Lukes, but I have severe Crohn’s disease which unfortunately lands me in the Er a lot. Most of the doctors are familiar with me but I just had the worst experience ever tonight. I’ve been having a lot of Crohn’s issues the last few weeks which is a lot of pain and my body getting dehydrated and I’ve passed out a few times. Ct scan showed inflammation and my white blood count has been slowly going up. Tonight my pain was horrible and I passed out again today, 3rd time this week, the doctor wanted to give me tylonel which does nothing when my pain is so high. I refuse to be on narcotics at home but when I’m in the hospital or Er it knocks my pain way down, as I’ve reached a point where I can’t control it at home. Tonight the Doctor assumes I’m just there for narcotics which is far from the truth.. I understand they have to be careful but I ended up leaving as the doctor was judging me as someone I am not. Dr. Perala, I will never let him treat me again, he made me feel so belittled ,what happened to the patient above all else.. I have never felt so humiliated ever in my life and their was medical proof of a flair going on.

Diabetic patient denied food after requesting four times. Got angry because sugar was low so was forced medication against will and licked in a padded room. Felt like he was being left for dead. RUN FROM THIS PLACE.

This place seems to run on common sense unlike the competition. They care about people (maybe there is a bad apple sometimes) and the leadership shows. I work with many employees from both hospitals and I can ask them about there job without knowing where they work and I can tell where they work... Seems the happy ones work at St Lukes under Mr Strange and the unhappy ones work at essentia under Dr. Person. I sometimes ask them about the upper management and the answer is He is great a nice guy or I have never meet him...... I will let you figure out who I am talking about. With my families "problems" with health I have been to both places. Here is what I have been told by PROS in the field at both places and I sum it up with this..... If your looking for a check up or have a basic emergency go to St Lukes... If your having a MAJOR heart attack or having a VERY early delivery on your pregency you go to Essentia. So to sum it up Essentia his better for MAJOR Heart and PREMATURE babies. Make your main "clinic" a St Lukes one and if you need it Essentia is happy to take your money if you need them!

Transported to St.Lukes from Grand Itasca. Arrived at 12:00 am. Had a brief visit from the ER doctor and never saw him again. Had a nice nurse check on me but no medical care. Basically, they left me there. Treated me like I was lieing about my pain and like I was a drug addict. Was there until 11:30 am until I checked myself out of the hospital for lack of care. What a joke of a hospital. I think they should rethink their medical practices. I am still suffering. Thank you St.Lukes for not caring about your patients.

Best of EVERYTHING including good food and good people.

Went in for a sport injury. The doctor spent 1 minute with me. Told me to get a brace and my knee would be fine. I went to Another place to make sure and it turns out I tore my ACL completely and had sprains and bone bruising. Not going there again. I will say, I did enjoy the nursing staff, they did a good job.

makayla orrey

Gone here for years love them

Jacob Bochler

The people are nice but I have been there twice for very quick and small things and the wait is horrible. The first time it took over 5 hours before they saw me and it took 10 min to get my results. The secound time I had a appointment and I had to wait a hour before they saw me. I believe they try but the wait is too long.

Wanted to thank everyone that was involved with my experience at St. Luke's. From emergency room with Doctor Freeman to my Surgeon Dr. Nisbet. Nurse's were very nice and I felt well taken care of the through the whole experience. Thanks again to everyone for the care.

Gumby Defoe

Very poor treated my wife and I like we were criminals and drug users. On call doctors from fdl reservation made false actucation about us. Did not ask us if the things they heard from someone that lives across state was true or not. Just looked at my wife an I and told the rest of staff at St. Luke's it was all true. Did not bother to get the true facts.

Jessi L. Engel

I had my daughter here lil over 4 years ago and the nurses were very nice. Only had 1 rude nurse.

Angel Johnson

I went to the ER after falling on my rollerblades at great momentum. I had a bloody head, hurt foot and elbow. I figured I should go in after I sat at home icing everything and monitoring my symptoms. After feeling a headache and nausea come on around 6:45, I spent 2.5 hours in the quiet ER. At 8pm I was told they were going to clean my head so they could see the injury better and give me a CT scan. They completely ignored the fact that I can't put pressure on the injured foot and had pain from the elbow pulsing to my wrist. Aside from this, by 9pm no one came to clean my head let alone check up on me. I was by myself and my headache was getting worse so I called for a nurse. An intercom in the room quickly responded "can I help you" to which I responded that I needed a nurse. After 25 minutes since I asked for a nurse, no one came. I was getting irritable, hungry, my head injury pulsing and STILL BLEEDING. I left and will absolutely be calling tomorrow to make sure I don't get billed. Poor service and it wasn't the first negative experience here.

I had to spend an unexpected couple of days in the orthopedic ward, getting intravenous antibiotics. The staff were pleasant, good-humored (sometimes downright funny), and diligent. The doctor kept me informed as to my progress and his concerns, and was quite personable. Wonder of wonders, the food was even good! This was not my first experience with St. Luke's. Last year my husband spent nearly 2 weeks there - first in the ICU, then in cardiac care and recovery. The care was first-rate; the staff was first-rate. The doctors who saw him in the clinic could also follow him in the hospital, and did so. (This is not the case at Essentia, where the clinic doctors cannot follow their own patients during a hospital stay.) I highly recommend St. Luke's and their staff.

Heather Holland

St. Luke's claims to put the patient above all else but don't let them fool you, they are a ruthless corporation. They are quick to prescribe you treatment that will cost thousands of dollars but do not tell you that. I have lost a ton of faith in the doctors there as they truly work for big pharma and do not care so much about their patients but more about collecting a check. I advise anyone who is going there to see through the facade they put on and make sure you have all the information before trusting these crooks with your health.

Danny Bamlet

Got a kid with a busted top jaw and missing teeth we have been here for 2 hours and no has been here to see him my do not go here if There is an emergency worst hospital I have ever visited

Had to have emergency surgery after accident. I had to stay in the hospital for 3 days. The staff was amazing. Always made me feel comfortable and answered all my questions. Great experience and food wasn't half bad either. Thank you St. Luke's

Nurses at St Lukes made me feel safe, cared for, and comfortable throughout my stay. Highly recommend the St Luke's midwives and birthing center to anyone who wants the best of both worlds- supportive person-centered care and safety.

The best patient service I have seen during my 74 years.

5 Star Birthing Experience -- We wanted to have a home birth experience and due to complications had to transfer. We had no idea what to expect and were completely blown away with the sensitivity, respect, kindness and amazing staff (the birthing suite was amazing too!) that were shown to us. Even the kitchen food was quite good and shipped faster than a Domino's pizza. Wow! From beginning to end we were held in the highest esteem and our wishes were all honored while maintaining safety. We delivered to a healthy baby girl and are absolutely thrilled that we had a wonderful birth outcome despite our initial complications. I highly recommend the birthing unit of St. Lukes.

While the care at St Luke's Hospital is great, the Patient Above All Else mantra goes quickly out the door if you owe them money. After a series of operations we were left with numerous bills to decipher. Riverview Law Office helped us do that and provided us with a court date for the lawsuit that St Luke's was bringing against us. After settling that, another one of the bills was quickly sent to collection. After paying the collection agency for many many months we were informed that Riverview Law Office would become involved again since St Luke's did not get the money they thought they should get every month. After payment in full was handled, St Luke's was 'kind' enough to cancel any legal proceedings involving Riverview Law Office. I would highly suggest that before any involvement with the St.Luke's system, make sure you have a lot of cash readily available! If the "patient above all else" is synonymous with ruthless, they are achieving their goal.

My fiancé fell while moving a bookshelf and unfortunately took a metal rod to the knee partially degloving his knee cap. Really deep and bad cut. He ended up needing stitches. While we didn’t have to wait long the doctors and nurses almost completely ignored how much pain he was in. He kept telling them that this knee was previously injured and that he couldn’t feel his foot at all. The nurse just said and I quote “people get all kinds of sensations when they’re in pain”. Then he proceeded to inject a local anastetic and immediately began sewing in the stitches without giving the anastetic time to kick in. While my fiancé was sitting there white knuckled, yelling in pain at the nurse because he could feel every stitch, without even stopping or looking up he said, twice, “do you feel pressure or pain?”. And my fiancé yelled pain! Of course! And he didn’t stop. Just finished the stitches. Then the staff discharged him before they even finished treating him! They forgot his tetanus shot! They had to make us wait more to do that! Horrible care and now we’re heading to the essentia urgent care tonight to make sure he doesn’t have nerve damage or any internal damage since st. Luke’s ignored him.

My Biological mother Tammy, is very very medically sick needing surgeries after surgeries, and this hospital has been going above and beyond to make and help her get Better!!!

Never have been in a hospital before. Broke both ankles and was brought here. Incredibly impressed with every person I have met. Knowledgable staff. Kind and compassionate. They provided with excellent care. Hopefully going home today. I am from out of town. Could not have had better care.

Joe Andersen

Mediocre experience, waited over an hour in the lobby at the Urgent Care intake, left once we were told it would be another 20 minutes to be seen. Remember when Urgent Care meant a hard max of 45-minutes in-and-out, start-to-finish deal? Well they don't, because this group of highly trained professionals have never really been able to quite figure out that they need more lay-staff and on-call doctors. It's almost as if they know that not being to see patients efficiently is bad and one of the biggest problems in corporate healthcare (because corporations are far too cheap to adequately staff), but then they openly choose to not work any harder or any smarter to resolve the darkly hilarious prospect of patients dying while waiting over an hour for emergency or urgent care. Guys- if you can't seat patients in front of doctors in under 20 minutes, you are plain, flat-out not capable of providing urgent care by it's very literal name. If you can't do emergency rooms in 10, your complacency with bureaucracy and the status quo has exceeded the critical level where reason meets expectations. This makes your emergency room a potentially DANGEROUS decision to make, from a standpoint of patient well-being. We sent men to the moon 60 years ago in a tin foil rocket powered by a mechanical calculator. We invented the internet 30 years ago. Even you guys have multiple cyber-knives, and a large array of other extremely advanced pieces of groundbreaking technology. You should NOT be pleased with yourselves that it takes over an hour for a doctor, under any circumstance, let alone in an urgent care setting. Get good- or quit, to put it simply.

Great service and staff. Felt appreciated.

merkl stevens

If I go to the hospital because I'm in pain and the doctor proves your pain is real why not treat it?

Ali Cline

Be cool if the nurses and staff didn't dreaming smoke outside my home next door in the apartments. Or mouth off to me when I ask them to leave. Or not freaking move when I am trying to maneuver my two small children or bags into the door. So great smelling their second hand smoke all the time.

I went to St Luke’s via Orthopedic Associates ( Dr Schnell) Had a pretty good stay. Many many great sweet kind nurses. Surgery was a success

Paige Bennett

St Luke's is definitely my choice for hospital care. The doctors are very kind and understanding non judgemental very compassionate people I had my child I was born there as well and none the less the people treat you good and that's what matters they care about you.

Ruth Verrill

Didn't make it out of the waiting room who gets diagnosed in a waiting room with no tests done? I Better not be charged for anything. Had a fever for a week and a half didn't even get to tell them all my symptoms and they were trying to get rid of me. No chest xray....nothing but they came to the conclusion somehow it was an upper respiratory infection and gave me a perscription. And a wealthy woman and her daughter came in with urinary tract problems. The Dr. Said we have a bed for you but technically there are 2 people ahead of you. They brought that family to a room right away than got rid of me and a single mom of 2 with a sick toddler. Nobody can tell me everyone is given the same care despite the type of medical you have. All that was done was vitals which were low my bp was 111/63 my oxygen level was low and temp was 100. I had to beg for blood work and all they said was my sugar levels are high then told me how the staff ate sweets one day and tested their levels and how high they got.... Good story... This is why I haven't been to the Dr's in so many years you're better off taking time off work you can't afford and sleeping it off hopefully. The visit was so rediculous I don't know how they have people coming in the door after 1 visit...maybe that's the point if you don't have money.

Austin Konrad

Im from out of town and was brought there and got terrible service. Was air lifted there so I had no car and had to wait 3-4 hours for a ride after being released but was kicked out hardly able to walk. Im 18 and I fully believe they gave me terrible service becuase they felt they could.

Test Duluth

Warm, tender, and caring staff. Would consider no where else. And they don't forget you're there.

Victoria Perez

This place deserves less than one star. This is absolutely the worst hospital I have ever been to. My friend came in after having a terrible episode. He was having many suicidal thoughts. All they did was put him in a bed in a hallway for 3 hours and ignore him. The waiting room is disgusting. No one does their jobs. There is no urgency whatsoever here. They make you wait forever with no updates. Head over to essentia or st. Mary’s if you want real help.

Robert Walters

Only saving grace for this facility were the nurses and PAs. My mother was admitted there with severe abdominal pain and ended up having Dr. Miranda for a gastro doc. Extremely unprofessional and beligerant with my mother when asking about what she was experiencing i.e., symptoms, pain etc while constantly interrupting her and not letting her talk. When my mom questioned him about an upcoming procedure, (paraphrasing) he said "I'm a very busy man, you can go home instead" My mom is an RN so it's not like she's ignorant about the goings on in the medical field she just wanted to know what she was having done as it had not been communicated clearly. No excuse for treating a PATIENT nor anyone else so poorly!

Justin Rubin

They have always been there for all of us.

Aimee Peterson

Worst experience ever, spent 45 minutes waiting in the emergency room with NOBODY even checking on my mother. While she’s moaning in pain, going to the desk and asking just for something to relieve the pain until they can see her and nothing. I’d rather go to Essentia.

Brandon Alaspa

The worst mental health care EVER. Lots of lies by multiple staff members. I would never step foot in this place even if i was bleeding to death outside there door.

Ego Lifter

Worst hospital on the face of the earth, Money is more important than their patients lives, they refused to do a scan on my dad because they said it was pneumonia which it wasn’t so they let him suffer in a hospital room for a week than sent him home, he was back at the same hospital a couple days later and still refused to scan him for anything and now he is dying. THANKS ST.LUKES

Third incident with St Lukes concerning my healthcare. Comprehensive health care? Really?? Seriously?? Callous healthcare is more accurate.

Dana Strandberg

I recently had an emergency surgery in the St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. I am so pleased with the treatment I received from the nurses, doctors, surgeons, anesthesiologist and medical staff. They all contributed to making an anxious, intimidating situation for me into a warm, calm and comfortable experience. Literally every experience my family and I have had with healthcare using St. Luke's facilities thus far has exceeded expectations. The doctors, anesthesiologists, and surgeons are professional, courteous, highly-skilled and personable - and so incredibly accommodating. The nurses and medical staff have phenomenal bedside manners and skills, and they go above and beyond with their care. I've been with St. Luke's for 10 years. The healthcare they provide is unmatched.

St. Luke's Duluth is the place to be when medical help is needed! From emergency surgeries, to long term care and rehab there is not a better place to be or have your loved ones! St. Luke's saved my life in more ways than one and they continue to make my life better with every visit. Great people, vast knowledge, wonderful skills and huge hearts. Thank you to the ortho department, emergency care, 8W and the rest of St. Luke's for giving me a second chance at a happy life!

Can't say I liked the er doctor very much yet the nurses usually are always the best

Julie Braun

A well staffed hospital, run with expertise and kindness. Thank you, St. Lukes!

Jane Busche

Very disgusted that my mom has been waiting over two hours to be seen, yet others who arrived way after she got here are being brought into see a doctor! The receptionist claims the others are having chest pains, but none of those arriving have stated they were here for chest pains. We are thinking about going to Essentia for her to get the medical attention she really needs.

Leanna Dreher

Birthed both of my children there and they were nothing but wonderful! The staff at the birthing center was amazing and the new suites are very comfortable. I was given everything I needed and more to make my stay enjoyable. I would not hesitate to recieve care from them again!

Tony Tarnowski

Loved all the staff here the where all friendly and helpful for the prop, to drs and the food staff. They made sure all my needs where met. Dr Rother from orthopedic Associates was a awesome Surgeon and Dr.

Michael Hicks

They treat their patients like person and not a criminal and they take their time and care for their patients well being and excellent customer service skills.

Gave birth to my son 9 days ago. I cried when I headed home after being discharged. They treated me so well that I actually started to think they were like my family and I didn't want to leave. I'm a very shy person but with them, I was comfortable exposing my body in front of them, or letting them watch me pee. I know it sounds gross and weird but that's how comfortable I got. I had a few different doctors and a few different nurses throughout my stay, but there was only one person I didn't really Care for but she was in and out in 10 mins so no biggie. Everyone else WOW! I love you guys for making it so much easier to be in labor. I've had nothing but support and kind words and actions through 3 days of being there. Thank you so much!!

Cariac ICU staff was awesome! Including ancillary staff like Respiratory Therapy. Glad I was diverted from St. Mary's!

St lukes staff is unreal..they go beyond the call of duty..Dr. karwoski has been a Godsend For Me Many Times. He not only really cares but his communication has been fantastic. If you are lucky enough to Have him as your Primary..consider it a Blessing. His nurse Patti is fantastic..she takes time to call and explain. Dr. Silva has been unreal, her fusion staff is very caring and helpfull. Dr Beach and Dr Popham are the best..Thank you St. Lukes I'm so Glad I went to st. lukes 15 years ago..they have saved my life a few times.

The billing department is hot garbage. Prepare to get several different bills, get the runaround when you ask why, and for your payments to vanish into thin air. DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU ARE LITERALLY DYING and in that case prepare to get bills the rest of your life.

Benjamin Ebacher

Nothing.... Never would go there again lazy... Lazy... Lazy... If I have to go anywhere with anything... It is better to go to Jerry the local homeless man ...

Ben Huebsch

My girlfriend and I drove down from Grand Marais for a psych evaluation, both took the day off of work. We were 10 minutes late and the main diagnosing mental health doctor cancelled the appointment and rescheduled it for 2 weeks later. Absolute waste of time and money. The doctor just wanted to get out of there, she was the last appointment of the day and couldn't wait 10 whole minutes. Now we get to take more days off work, spend more money to get down there, and this time I will be calling this idiot to tell her that we are heading down, along with updates every 30 minutes as to our eta. Worst experience I have ever had with any hospital or clinic. What a joke.

Austin Wick

When I was probably about 12 I came to his hell hole after having a 50-80 pound hockey net crush my head between the ice. I was treated by paramedics and firefighters at the scene and rushed to the ER. At St. Luke’s they have an ambulance bay which is where I was brought. Upon arrival my mom called ahead to let them know what happened and that we were pulling in. We were greeted by a security guard who helped me into the ER. He then found a doctor who dismissed me into the Urgent Care waiting room. After an hour of waiting I began to lose sensation on my left side. I found this out when I began to slur my speech and could no longer tie my shoe. We were moved to a private waiting room where I began to develop a headache. After waiting another 30 minute to an hour I was taken into the ER. In the ER I was met by very nice nurses and the worst doctor I’ve ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I was bleeding from behind the ear and in and out of consciousness. Instead of doing a proper exam or even a CT scan after having a massive hit to the head, I was sent home. At home I was laying in bed and just got worse. I began to become even more out of it as my speech went so slurred I could say a word correctly and I was unable to walk because of the numbness on my left side. I was then rushed to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth where I had a CT scan done and was observed for a few hours. The CT was clean and I was luckily ruled to have a concussion. Sure, maybe nothing serious came out of this but the problem is what if I had had an inter-cranial hemorrhage? I was dismissed and untreated at St. Luke’s

How many stars can I give for saving my husband's life? Extraordinary skills, amazing facility, I cannot express how grateful I am for St. Luke's, their trauma team, Dr. John Styliaras, the nursing staff, and the rehab unit. From my whole heart, thank you and bless you!

Melissa Wolden

I have to give the 6th floor cardiac team a Hugh shout out for giving our father the very best of care . You all are very amazing people and made my dad's stay very comfortable. Thank You All!!

On Sunday August 13th, my son was stung by a wasp, we did not know he was highly allergic. When he got home, his face was so swollen his eyes and brow swollen beyond recognition. Jumped in the truck got to St. Luke's and received the best care imaginable. Walked into the reception area, she was already on the radio with the ER, with in seconds there was a nurse there with a wheel chair taking my son into the ER. By the time I got him registered (minutes) I headed back to his room, they had him IVed, blood pressure, and pulse already taken and meds being pushed. The Dr. said he would be giving my son some RX's and never ever drive him in again. Take Epi pen and call 911. We had the absolute best care ever, quick, friendly, professional, especially since my son could not see, and I was scared to death. Kudos to SLH and Staff.
