Excellent facility and people!

The VA overall is a good institution. I wouldn’t recommend a Compensation and Pension exam at Togus. If you can get it transferred to the Jamaica Plains VA in Boston, MA, it would benefit your outcome. If you live in Maine, and Togus is not where your primary care is located, make sure you bring your medical records with you. Up until 2013 Togus did not have access to my records in the Caribou VA clinic. There is nothing worse than having a doctor in the dark for why you traveled six hours in one direction. You also rate being put up for the night if you live too far away- ask for information on that. The hospital is a super old group of buildings, and are under renovation. Make sure you get directions to where you are going. You might need to walk a long ways- snag a wheelchair if you aren’t good on your feet. This also is necessary if you go to eat food at the mess hall. It’s a long walk at times. The parking is limited. Plan to be early. You might have to walk. The hospital seemed professional enough. Because it is the only one in Maine, you will need to be prepared to be triaged- or another way of putting it is that if someone needs an appointment more than you, you will need to wait. This fact makes veterans frustrated and angry. You will probably hear someone voicing their not so happy opinion. The staff want to help. Many people come down to Massachusetts because of this. You can get a ride on a shuttle bus down. They might need to house you down there. Ask. You can receive travel pay if you drive yourself down. Don’t forget to electronically check in to your appointments. If you have any problems and feel your needs were not understood or met, at every hospital there is a patient advocate available. They are very nice, and should help you get your issue resolved. You are there because you or your family member served. You are your best representative. Be polite and remember they are human.

I sent this email to SENATOR COLLINS, KING and our Govenor...let me share it with you...my initial email was sent to my Navy Shipmates letting them know that our VA HOSPITALS were alive and well...thank you/ Since my retirement from our Navy in 1983, I have had a steady hearing loss in my right ear, gradually, the hearing in my left ear diminished to the point that I had to have a hearing test at our local VA Hospital in Augusta, ME.. First, let me detail the wonderful experience that I had with the VA...In 1983, I had my retirement physical at the VA Hospital and have not returned until this week...The speed and efficiency of the VA registration process amazed me from the initial over the phone registration which took less than 15 minutes, to the setup of a hearing test the following week. During the test visit yesterday, I had time to walk the hospital halls, the cleanliness and management of the spaces was flawless, the Staff personnel was outgoing and friendly...but most important, their willingness to render service to us Vets was greatly appreciated. Many of the patients were elderly, had seen better days, fought other wars...but most still wore their service ball caps, the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and Coast Guard were all represented. I felt really at home when greeted at the entrance door with a sincere, welcoming smile from the Information Receptionist ... And a Thank You for my service. Now, for the other side of my visit...seems that I will have two hearing aids on 21 December...I have lost 60% hearing in both ears...I guess that is what my lovely Barbara has been screaming at me for the past 20 years. I knew that I was slowly losing my hearing, but in the past year it has become a real issue. So, the VA will fit me out with two state of the art hearing aids, rechargeable batteries and Bluetooth compatible with iPhone and other devices. But the real message to you all is the VA at least at Togas is not the horror stories heard on TV ... I felt the staff really cared, were honored to serve us Vets, I will return when in need again. Best Regards Bear and Barbara Ann They do not have me yet...but we did get a Christmas card from our preplanned Funeral Director with a holiday greeting saying "We will be seeing you!"

It's a very old place and one of beauty. Hard to believe it is as old as it is!!!

They do as they say they do.

The service provided on the phone to reach any member is pathetic and I was transferred three times with no results! Also whomever I just spoke to on a different matter just now is severely unprofessional and rude and I do not appreciate this negativity and if this is how employees of this medical center are trained to be then pathetic you best work on this matter!! Also another negative is how I have left two to three voicemails over a few days with a certain service office and they have not contacted me yet. The few medical members I've dealt with were good but there are a few aspects that need to be fixed and dealt with at this location! Also recently been trying to work with vocational rehabilitation and their attitudes and professionalism are pathetic and negative so another aspect of this MC that needs to be fixed since this is disgusting!

Spent the weekend August 6 -8 th on ward 3 North with a very painful condition. Once again I was treated with great care, compassion, and professionalism.

Melody Silverstein

The reason why my review shows 4 stars is only because of KEVIN LEAVITT! The compassion he had towards my husband was immeasurable. I find it very disheartening that your country wants you to serve and protect but when it's all said in done they could careless about the Veteran or their wellbeing. Hopefully things will improve there. Thank you Kevin.

I ended up at Togus for a couple of reasons and then got an infection that increased my stay by six more weeks. The staff was wonderful and professional. I’ve since had to deal with another VA in Virginia. Togus shines above them (in Virginia the VA is huge and doesn’t have the same atmosphere. I am truly grateful.

Efrain Rodriguez

I have been served their on several situation, from over night stay to Emergency care the same day.

Compaired to.Boston VA and the Povidence RI VA. This place ranks so low. Had an issue with my son very serious. The nurse who I spoke to in my opinion did not complete her evaluation correctly.

Ti Harrison

They treat my husband with dignity and respect and give him great service.

I have had very good care and find providers are VERY responsive. I was diagnosed with cancer recently. I have only received rapid response from ALL people involved to include Choice program. It was an almost seemless process to get treatment.

Ron Riml

Togus Staff have always strived to be most helpful - very fortunate to have VA services available.

I have been trying for months to get a problem corrected with my VA Blue button here. One person has tried very hard to get the job done, he is professional and courteous. Whom ever is above him evidently is not doing there job,and I find this to be appalling. I gave 12 years of my life for this country and now am on the verge of having to go to the National news media to maybe get the problem corrected. This is a disgrace to my flag, my country and God. My oath was to protect and serve against all enemies foreign and domestic. I’ll say no more you be the judge.

Wow--what a place! This is the oldest VA hospital in the country. It is on a beautiful piece of land. I've not been a paitent here nor have a known one. But, I've volunteered here a number of times and have spoken to several veterans who have been here and who were there for treatment. All of them spoke highly of their caregivers. The staff there is remarkable. One of the things I like most is that this isn't managed healthcare. If the veteran needs an MRI the doctor doesn't need to ask permission from an HMO. It just gets done.

Patty Gross

My Vietnam Era vet husband has been treated for many conditions at the Togus VA and at Jamaica Plains in MA. NEVER has he ever been treated better by any medical professionals, office staff, and all others who work at the VA. They work FOR the veterans. We are at a total loss as to how anyone could complain about this healthcare system. My husband has had surgery for bladder cancer, treatment for epilepsy, and many other conditions. Always seen in a timely manner and with the upmost of respect and dignity! If it were not for the VA Medical Center my husband would not be here. We are most grateful and cannot imagine not having access to the VA Medical Centers. Thanks to all VA employees for all you do to help each and every veteran.

I agree with the rest of the good reviews. I've been to several other VA hospitals and this one exceeds standards as far as hospitality, waiting time, personability of staff, and so forth. I actually look forward to my appointments here!

They get a 3 for numerous reasons. One being the.care offered is subpar at best. I have a problem.dealing with people who.have little to no.military experience or.haven't served themselfs taking.care of myself.and.other vets. We should have A PLUSCARE 100% of.the time.and nothing less than 100% effort.from all care providers. Its clear that lots of.those workers there are their for themselfs there paycheck.and.not the.veteran. After all we fought for your.freedom to we should be treated with the utmost respect and.not looked down upon. I.ve.been.there twice the inside and outside looks good but the people could.be better. They can offer a bigger broader scope of.treatments care providers and.options. Faster service and shorter wait times!! I understand.health cares not fastfood again you can do alot better. You expect.the member to.be.early and.on.time is it.to.hard.to ask that you the.provider do the same. They have to.many problems and.not enough solutions. Please fix it.p.s. I have written President Trump and Senators Collins.and King regarding.these issues. The doctor I had retired its been.over a month and still have no.care. so I guess I'll.have to get.civilian care since you guys dropped.the ball. VA not.better care then.civiliancare. Hopefully someone.who.make descions looks.at this.and.does something someone.with common.sense!!!!!! Hopefully.this won't happen to me Again.or.others. Its a shame!!!!!!!!

David Worthley

Because they gave me a job.

You hear a lot about how bad VA hospitals are. This is not one of them. Everyone here cares about you. Everyone is helpful. Everyone is in a good mood. I’ve only had to wait 2-3 weeks for an appointment. If they want something done sometimes they’ll have you do it that day. I’ve never seen any long lines. Appointments are always on time. If you put in a claim, you’ll get a call back with 3 weeks or so. That’s nothing compared to 6+ months other hospitals take

Roy Harper

I've had reason to visit several VA Hospitals over the past 40 years, and will insist the care at Togus is head and shoulders above any other I've visited. The eye clinic here provides such a high level of care that I'd NEVER consider going elsewhere. I've also been more than satisfied with the care of the gastroenterology unit and the day surgery clinic. An added benefit is the norm is I'm seen at my scheduled appointment time or within a very few minutes of the time. I thoroughly enjoy having my healthcare delivered at Togus!!!

Terri Craft

Everyone is so helpful and they treat you with respect. Love it here

Barry Cates

Great concern about helping me locate this marker. Truly awesome experience.

Linda Huntley

Terrible! Two nurses on one shift acted like you were bothering them when you needed anything, after all they were playing donkey kong on their computer. I truly wish that my father had signed up with a private insurance company instead of signing on with the VA, worst health care you could get! It is ridiculous that when you're in your 80's and have no license and no means of transportation that you have to be treated at Togus when you live 3 hours away!

Mike Mir

Steve Arino

Friendly and supportive environment.

This is a small, and extraordinarily well administered Hospital.

Nothing but admiration and respect for those who serve, those who served.

Top Notch! I am very impressed with the care that I have received. They go out of their way to help you. Much better care than I received at EMMC or MMC. Vets are treated with respect, dignity and kindness.

Richard Royer

In 1989 I was brushed off. But after pushing from family and freinds I tried it again. It was night and day from my first time. I have been going to Togus since 2007 and love it the staff is all about the Vet you can't ask for anything more!

arthur kreidler

Just had back surgery by the best surgical team I could pray for. Was given all the information of how ,what and when. The procedure was done expertly and I walked out of the hospital 2 hours later. Iam know home feeling so much better. Thank you all in the spine and back surgery dept the most professional people I've had the pleasure to meet! I salute you all. Art kreidler
