REVIEWS OF AdventHealth Shawnee Mission IN Kansas

Just wanted to thank the full AdventHealth team for their excellent care. From the time I was checked into their ER, to when I was admitted, and finally discharged, I had a full team of doctors, nurses, clinicians, dietary, and housekeeping, etc(I am sure I am missing others) that were very professional, thorough, and informative. They were quick to diagnose and even quicker to implement their plan. I was discharged around 4p on my last day and had my medicine delivered to my house before I even arrived home and a home health nurse at my house by 6p that same night to walk me through what I needed to do. Very impressed with the seamless communication and care across all of the different departments. Thanks again for the excellent care!

The staff at the hospital have been great with our mother. The nursing staff and doctors have done a wonderful job with care and explaining everything to us.

Hope Phillips

The medical staff in my primary care physicians office at Shawnee Mission were great. Today I received wonderful care in the diagnostic imaging department while having an MRI. I’ve also spoken on the phone with several persons in pre-registration and billing and always seem to encounter polite and courteous individuals. Thanks for providing great and also personal/compassionate service!

Lauren Blackie

The doctors are nice but the people in the lab are incompetent.

Todd Acinelli

We came into the emergency room with our son after he fell at the park, hitting his eye on one of the stepping wood stumps. They were too worried about checking insurance and getting signatures while my 7 year old had his eye bleeding out at the front desk. A good ER would have rushed my child back are started care immediately. After finally being seen, we have been waiting for over 1 hour after they numbed his eye to finish treating him for his injury. The ER was not busy while we were waiting, but they had plenty of time to talk to each other. I recommend against this hospital or any of their outpatient locations.

My husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma the beginning of April and has ended up in the hospital pretty much since his diagnosis. His oncologist Dr Kyasa is a soft spoken extremely kind and understanding person. He considers everything about the person to make the best treatment for his patients and their families. His nurses Sara and Nikki are kind and compassionate also. I have not met the others but I bet they are the same. We also met Dr Hughes and his nurses Leanne, Michelle and I forgot the 3rd ones name. They are also kind compassionate and caring. The nurses in the hospital are all kind, compassionate, caring individuals. There was only one that we feel was average, but she was not a bad nurse she just didn't meet the higher standards the other nurses are at. One person there that I want to mention by name is Christian, he works in transportation. My husband was sent down for a CT scan (he was not ambulatory) the xray tech said he needed to be on a gurney to put on the table for the CT. Christian did everything he could to help my husband not have to go back upstairs to have to come back down. He was very caring and went way above and beyond to help my husband. I hope whomever reads this, that is in authority there, will give him a raise and let him know he is doing an excellent job. This is just the beginning of our journey with this disease but I wanted to put this here for now. I may make a comment again in the future. Most of the people we have interacted with at Shawnee Mission Medical Center are very empathetic people.

Really disappointed in the hospital. My doctor wanted me to get a ultrasound and the hospital called to schedule it, then called back to verify and do my preregistration also to advise the cost would need to be paid before the procedure $950, I called Diagnostic Imaging and they quoted me $250, can't imagine there is a $700 difference. Called my doctor and had them send my info to DI, SMMC is a rip off!! Get a clue!!

The Birth Center is a very impressive facility. It presents a really comfortable environment and the staff is top notch! The care is exceptional, the design is upscale, and the babies are welcomed in the best way possible...

Malik Maxville

The OP location ER Dr was awful. Terrible bed side manner and very unprofessional. Dr. Prater has the attitude that “they’ll come back normal but we will run them.” He is by far the worst doc I’ve come across. He talks to you like a 2 year old that makes up symptoms and does not take what you’re saying seriously. The nurses however were amazing, both Dawns, and also the lady at the front desk, Rae-Lynn, absolutely wonderful and very helpful.

Tristin Autrey

I don't know about the rest of the hospital but I can tell you the birth center is amazing! And what is even more amazing are the staff there. I have had 4 children there and each and every time has been wonderful! If this wasn't our last one, I would continue having babies there.

yessica aguilar

Very rude overnight doctor and nurse. The staff was very upset when I questioned the reason behind performing the same test 3 times. Their response was. That is just what we do. Not a very informative response. I should of left as soon as I saw first red flag the front receptionist is also there check in nurse and I was being asked my medical background in the lobby how unprofessional.

Dillon Roark

This is the best hospital in JoCo. The staff is friendly and competent. The cafeteria has delicious food and it’s part of a nationally recognized hospital system which can be helpful for billing purposes.

I gave birth at SMMC in 2007 to my first child. I had a wonderful birth experience with a caring nurse, doctor, and doula. My postpartum experience was less-so. I was given conflicting information regarding breastfeeding, was forced to wait for my baby to come back from the nursery for 2 hours after I requested her back (for no medical reason), and was encouraged to formula feed because no one seemed to have time to sit with me to help. I went on to become a doula after that and was privileged to attend births at SMMC with clients for around 7 years. I worked with doctors, nurses, and anesthetists that were caring and attentive to their patients. Shawnee Mission was one of the hospitals that I encouraged families to give birth at, even though my postpartum experience was less than stellar. I felt the nursing staff provided the kind of care as a team that was compassionate and evidence-based. I just made sure my clients had additional breastfeeding support through breastfeeding support groups, private lactation consultants and additional visits by myself to trouble-shoot any questions within my scope of practice. I have not been a doula for a few years now. I was asked to attend the birth of a close family member recently. I was excited to go back to SMMC because I felt it was a great choice for them. Without giving out a lot of private information about the birth, I will share how I was treated and how it impacted me. The day nurse quickly moved from mom's plan of a natural-friendly birth, while the nurse on the shift before was completely supportive of moving while laboring, using the shower with a wireless monitor, supporting her emotionally and physically, etc. The day nurse quickly told her that she could not get out of bed to use the restroom, but every 2 hours; that she couldn't use a birth ball, get in the shower, etc. We made do, even though it was not supportive of her wishes and was not medically indicated by the doctor. At one point, the mom was laying in bed and needed to shift her position. I was assisting her with shifting on to her side as the nurse walked in and started questioning me about my knowledge. I mentioned at this point that I used to work as a doula. She screamed at me about her license being on the line. I want to illustrate here that I was doing nothing out of scope as a doula at any point. I'm highly trained and credentialed. BUT, I was there as a close family member, not as a hired doula. First, no family member should be screamed at like that. I stood in the corner and teared up a bit while I got myself together. Second, whether or not I was a doula shouldn't have made a difference. It says to me that she had a negative experience with a doula (and I get that can happen, doulas working out of scope is problematic for sure). In the nearly hundred births that I have attended as a doula in multiple hospitals all over the region, I have never been spoken to that way. And to have it happen as a family member was doubly-disappointing. What should have been a happy day was marred by maltreatment. I would highly suggest that your nursing staff be trained as doulas and trauma-informed caregivers. If you want to build a bridge between the doula community and your staff, please reach out to local doula organizations to set up panel discussions and education sessions for both. It should be a collaborative relationship that is mutually beneficial. I still think back to the birth of my daughter and how awesome my nurse and doula worked together. Treating family members and birthing persons in birth as non-autonomous individuals can lead to trauma and higher rates of postpartum mood disorders. Humanized birth is possible. This nurse either needs some sensitivity training in the very least, or needs to move on to a different department. Labor and delivery is a complicated place to work as miracles are happening every day. Birth is what we call an ordinary miracle. It's an ordinary day for staff, but a miracle for the families that are birthing. It would be wise to remember that.

My son received the most horrible care at this hospital from a nurse they call "Kat". She violated his patient rights more than once and lied to us about the doctor's orders. We will most definitely seek legal action against her and SMMC for the pain and suffering he experienced. I feel sorry for patients who have no family or friends to advocate for them. There is no telling how much damage she's done to others. I pray that my son doesn't have long-term effects from the trauma she caused him. And you can save the generic response about contacting the Patient Advocate #, we're contacting our attorney this week.

The docotor didn’t do any type of tests on my knees that both were clearly not sprained and sent me home with pain medication nothing more and said I sprained my knee but something more is going on because the other one is starting to hurt in the same place we weren’t even in there for 20 minuets!!! The doctor was horrible and didn’t listen to anything I was trying to say and told me my pain spots where wrong!! Not to mention the last time I went there they missed my appendix ruptured and I went two months with it in my bony and children’s mercy found it and by that time it was already ROTTED in side of me! Never going there again after that! Not to mention the communication between doctor and patient and even between nurse sucked!

Wish there was a 0 star option. Treating my mentally handicapped uncle as a prisoner (literally-they put him in the prisoner section) No tray table for eating. Last visit no blankets. Now not allowing him to see family as he suffers with his psychological condition (the only thing helping is seeing his family!!!!) Staff has shown little compassion and do not seem to know how to handle him. Marta “the behavior specialist “ came off as super cold, rude, skeptical and I’m not sure she had a caring bone in her body. It felt as though she was discriminating against him because he was special needs. They acted so superior and refused to give him a room in the proper unit. Instead they put him in a box with no allowance of family or visitors towards the end, while they devised this evil plan to keep family out and move him to the state hospital. Knowing that Shawnee Mission was incapable of properly caring for him we had arranged other plans for him where he would be better cared for and valued as a patient. But no- Shawnee Mission took it upon themselves to transfer him to the state hospital against all of our knowledge, will and without any communication. It is DISCUSTING that they think this is care. I wouldn’t wish this hospital on my worst enemy. Do not go here!! (unless you are wishing to suffer in sad hostile place ) They can do that well! Please note: not all all people helping him were evil. Mikayla was very sweet along with others. and I do not want them to get wrapped up in the caniving ways of their supieriors. Marta should take notes for the genuinely sweet people who tried. Please do not give me the auto response you give to all 1star reviews. We plan to take legal action and not let you get away with inhumane excuse of a hospital and this treatment towards an adult with auto-aim.

DO NOT USE THIS HOSPITAL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! ! !! they let my mother have a heart attack for FOUR HOURS before bringing a doctor in to evaluate her properly, THEN DIDN'T EVEN DO HER SURGERY CORRECTLY!! ! POOR STAFF POOR HOSPITAL

Pretty surprised to see at the main ER entrance an essential oil diffuser with a MLM brand. You never know when an infant/toddler or someone with a compromised respiratory system is going to have to walk through the ER, and the oils could do more harm then good.

Dustin Dunkin

Born there love it there my brother and sister as well born there. Never had a bad experience drs saved my brother In the 80s nothing but positive things.

I was recently in the ER vomiting blood from a tonsillectomy I had. It took them awhile to get me back, but it was 4 AM, so there weren't many nurses there. All of the doctors and nurses were very cordial and helped me in any way they could. The anesthesiologist was understanding with my fears of being put under, the surgeon was nice too, but strangely absent from what I remember after waking up. She was the only surgeon in at the time though, so she was probably in with the next one. In the end, I healed up great, and am very glad I went to SMMC!

Suzanne Johnson-Beever

This was my first emergency room visit by ambulance, or any other means, to receive treatment. The doctor provided was cold, rude, and acted like she wanted nothing to do with me. I did not understand that reason she was so blatantly disrespectful and acted annoyed. The only good thing about the experience was the two nurses. I was so scared and had no idea what was going on with me. They did some tests, ran my blood, and provided a sedative. The next thing I know the nurse came in and said I was being released. The doctor never spoke to me about any of the test results, or communicated with me what they felt may have happened. I walked away completely confused. Hopefully, I never have to ride an ambulance again, but if I do, I will avoid Shawnee Mission Medical Center at all costs.

All I have to say is run as fast as you can from the Environmental Services Department it was the most exhausting stressful position that I have ever had in my life a lot of micromanaging and intimidation and discrimination Charlie (head of the Environmental Services Department) and Carmen (supervisor for room care) were the worst if this department is short staffed you will not be able to transfer to another department after 6months this is what the company tells you but it is not true they will not let you transfer period and will write you up to make sure that you can't transfer if you are not a Latino you are at the bottom of the priority list I regret working here terrible terrible place to work McDonald's would have been a better career move

David hoops

I wish I could rate this place 0 stars. The staff is rude, impatient, and incompetent! I will never go back to Shawnee Mission Medical Center to cure a loved one. Go there if you have something wrong and plan to die. Otherwise, get your loved ones saved somewhere else.

Ida Shadwick

I certainly would recommend this place! I've been here twice..both long stays. The staff go beyond themselves for their residents..and each other! There have been times where I thought healthcare had just given up..but they defiantly have put the health..back in healthcare! Thanks to you all..my 1st and only for me and my family!

Geri Padley

I was taken care of very quickly unlike St Luke’s . Compassionate care and wonderful staff. Great care.

I have had a few health concerns that Shawnee Mission Dr's., ENT Dr., Nurse Practitioners, Cardiologist and staff have supported me through this journey. A huge thanks to the information desk for dealing with my frustration in finding a parking spot, I bow and thank you I'm so lucky for your understanding. I love this hospital ever since the first cut, broken nose, sprang my children have experienced. Life has changed and now it is my turn to be the patient, not so much fun. The staff is so very patient, willing to listen and offer a kind hand. I feel like I should earn frequent flyer points as often as I've visited all these locations or maybe it pays off in caring, patients and everyone ready to help. Breath and trust them to do their best for you, I do. Thank you, Barry &Teresa Edwards- Hatcher Basehor, Ks.

Can express how disappointed I am in the individual nurse practitioner on duty tonight in the ER. My wife went in for an extremely painful cyst, and while she waited an additional 45 minutes after the nurse practitioner was done for the prescription over heard the nurse make the comment after another nurse inquired about the prescription (mind you while they were all laughing and joking so no other emergencies were occurring at the time): "Is she "AA", then she can wait a little longer" Since my wife is African American is safe to say her time and health were not a priority because of the color of her skin. I will never again take any of my "AA" family to this incredibly unprofessional hospital.

Rebecca Geracie

This morning we took my mother-in-law who is visiting from Arizona and complaining of severe chest pains to the ER. Since she has a pace maker and a-fib not to mention scared, we didn’t want to risk her flying home. The ER staff was incredible! They took her concerns seriously, treated her with respect and provided such amazing care!! She was taken to a room immediately and take care of by an outstanding, professional and caring staff which included ER nurse Tara, ER Dr. Otis Miller, Cardiology NP and Cardiologist Dr. Heath Wilt plus X-ray and other nurses! As it turns out she was ok and was discharged after they explained everything to her with great clarity. I have heard her on her cell this evening with her kids and friends telling them that the hospital was so amazing and she wishes her hospital in Az provided the same level of care. Thanks you to the ER staff.

Eric Lleras

I think the nurses are amazing, and the doctors are understanding and compassionate however I gave it 4 stars due to the 2-3 hour wait time. They know I have been in pain for 3 weeks, and been there 3 times already. they found blood in my bum, like I told them. horrible abdominal pain, and now I have a fever today. I will return to the hospital because they are the only ones who treat the patients with respect unlike the other hospitals in Missouri

Jocinda Wiehe

The birth center is great, I had a wonderful experience having my son here. However, their emergency room is awful. I had a horribly traumatic experience in the past the led to a suicide attempt. I overdosed. My mom found me acting loopy and hallucinating. I was too out of it to even talk to anyone or tell them what I did so they drug tested me. My mom thought I was roofied or something. I tested negative for everything so they sent me home and told my mom I was on LSD. I was not on LSD and I'm lucky to be alive today. Have your baby here, the birth center is amazing, but I'd recommend going somewhere else to go to the ER.

I have been a patient with SMMC for 32 years. The one day that I needed to make an appointment for my painful ankle, the Ask-A-Nurse nurse tricked me into some survey and then told me the results wouldn’t allow her to schedule me an appointment and that I need to go to the ER. It’s such a money grabbing scheme and I will not support this. Not to mention the RUDE service I received.

Anxious-child-of-god23 Forever

I would not recommend them even if they are in Kansas that is supposedly supposed to be the best hospital. My aunt had a sleeve opposition there last year. Immediately got an infection after. Week being home. Now still has not lost one inch of weight and I warned her to do research first just because they are closer to her does not mean they are better. My other aunt had a neck surgery and now her neck is deformed and she will never be the same. People these are regular people like us that don’t know what they are doing. Go to specialist only and top rated hospitals your life is worth so much more than a possible great outcome

Heather Merklin

If I could rate Shawnee Mission Medical Center lower than a 1 star, I would. Dr. Elizabeth Wickstrom, a Maternal Fetal Specialist at SMMC (aka Adventist), is the single worst person in her profession. She is careless, unstructured, negligent, and her inaction cost us the life of our child. It has taken me almost 2 years to write this review, and every single day I pray for lives of the children still under her care. She without a doubt should have her license revoked. We have seen countless specialists since our loss, and each of them has agreed with the Pathologist report from Children’s Mercy, which stated the death was almost certainly a direct result of my Graves Disease. A disease in which is listed as a subspecialty of a Maternal Fetal Specialist. Since Dr. Wickstrom was BARELY managing this disease and ignoring ALL the signs of his heart failure (polyhydramnios, ascites, irregular heart), and their sonogram techs failed to see the goiter; his heart stopped beating and he was stillborn. After the loss, I was recommended to schedule a follow-up to go over the Pathologist report. I was recommended by the Bereavement Counselor there who told me to advise the scheduler that they should request a copy of the final report prior to my visit. Not only did Dr. Wickstrom NOT have the final report, she was so unorganized that she did not come and get me until 25 minutes past the appointment start time because she “did not have a copy of the initial pathology report.” WHAT physician does not prepare prior to an appointment, especially of this nature!???! Until Dr. Wickstrom is removed from there, I will NEVER go to this facility again, and would NEVER recommend anyone see her as a Maternal Fetal Specialist.

My midwife made all the difference with my delivery of our first born at SMMC. The nurses were amazing, truly cared and took care of my baby and I. My rating unfortunately is knocked down a couple stars because of some of my experiences with the high risk doctors that I had to be seen by because of my health while pregnant- very poor communication. I don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t had my midwife there to be my advocate and make sure there was clear communication between all parties. Now my midwife is no longer backed to deliver at this hospital, so I will definitely not be returning. I believe in a women’s right to choose her birth experience and having a strong advocate, like a midwife, is my right. If SMMC wants to improve their labor and delivery and become a stronger hospital, they need to up their game and support midwives delivering babies. #optionsinbirth

My husband was recently hospitalized for 3 days with an infection. He was on the 3rd floor and I was very pleased with both nurses he had for the first 2 days. Susan and Lily were great, very thorough and knowledgeable. They also always made sure I was comfortable and didn't need anything and if I did had no problem getting it for me. Their Assiatants were also very pleasant and helpful as well. On the day he was discharged he had Jen and she did an awesome job as well we just didn't get to spend as much time with her as we did the other nurses. I felt comfortable in knowing if I wasn't there they would give me any details or changes that happened while I was gone. Being in the hospital is not the best feeling but knowing how well taken care of he was def helped ease my worries. He saw several doctors during his stay and they also were great and thorough and made sure that my husband and myself knew what was happening and when it would be happening. Thank you to the Shawnee Mission Medical Staff for everything you did over the last 3 days for my husband.

Nature's Beauty- Smith

Dr. Nortan saved my ex husband life there many years ago The IC U saved his life because he kept pulling his tubes out. His sugar was 1000 God Bless

Sai Krishna

The facility and staff are great but medical service is below normal. This is hard to detect unless you compare and take second opinion.

Jack Phillips

This is one of the most beautiful hospitals I have ever visited. The staff here is so friendly and helpful as well. It can be hard to find your way around this facility, though I have found that to be a good way to find cool additions to make this a place of refreshment as well. This hospital is faith based and open about it. You will find people to pray with if you are wanting that in your healing process. The chaplains are amazing here and represent a broad spectrum of faiths.

Griselda Diaz

Wow out of 12 years going here for my and my family health problems or emergency. I have to say this please don't have nurses from other units work the E.R. To being she made a mess trying to start an I.V on my husband then I helped to clean the mess. She then tried to draw blood and pocked her finger and if I wouldn't of been seeing and I asked her did you pock your finger and she said no then she said I'll just use another needle took her glove off and sure enough she had pocked her finger. Then she didn't even know how to hold the beautiful needle thing to draw the blood and torched my husband hand. Then I was about say that's enough when she said ok I'll get someone else. Then she came back gives my husband his meds and we asked her what are they she said something totally different then what he actually got. Wth. What if he was allergic am trying to take knowledge to make sure. Ok that's the nurse. please doctor I know your tired but trust me when we go to the e.r is not because we like it. We have to pay for your services we not getting it for free. The doctor like any other doctor asked rate your pain my husband said like an 9 the doctor said oh really you dont look like your getting cut with a chainsaw. My husband so smart obviously said well doctor I wouldn't know because I have never been cut with a chainsaw. Wth if he saying his in so much pain why would a professional act that way toward a patient. Am so mad and frustrated. My husband was discharged in pain still and no real answer to his pain. So disappointing.

Heather Galyardt

Poor service , I wouldn't recommend going here to anyone after the experience that I just had. There were only a select couple of people that were actually decent human beings. They will make a snap judgement about a person based off of your file without discussing it with you first. They seem to get enjoyment out of making you wait forever even though they already know how they will be treating/discharging you. I doubt that I will ever go here again based off of this visit and how humiliated I felt.

Bigs Bee

The doctors are caring. However, it takes them forever to get things done. My wife had a buldging doc in her L5 and it has taken 4 months and we are still waiting for an injection. While in the same year I have a buldging disc in my C7 and St. Luke's has taken care of it in less than two weeks. If yo u want to get well fast go somewhere else.

Lynnette Ranney

Brought my daughter into the ER, per Urgent Cares recommendation. Been here 2 hours not one person has come in form the clinical staff. But their billing made sure to meet us at the door as we walked in to collect information!! This is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! She is 7 covered in hives crying itching and in pain! I requested someone to come in and was told they would see if someone is available. I get they go by priority but 2 hours and not even someone asking if she wanted a drink or give her Benadryl or tell me what is wrong!!!!!! This is AWFUL! I feel like I may get better results going to Providence Medical Center....

Kelli Burch

I was in and out in two hours. I was in an accident and they were so kind and took care of me, listening to what happened and evaluating the situation. Super awesome group at this hospital.

Katie LaMartina

Stay out of this ER. I got there Saturday late. I was there for five hours to be told my right ankle was broken. I left. I wasn't sent with any discharge paperwork. I called Monday trying to see exactly what was broken. Suddenly the charge nurse pulls up my x-ray and now it's "sprained on top of an old break from the last two weeks". Which the hell is it? I'm really irritated. The nurse came in assumed I was another patient, I was really tired and had to correct him. Go somewhere else. Menorah does a great job. Saint Luke's South... great!

Joan Denny

I was unexpectedly hospitalized over a weekend in Nov. Excellent care from a caring staff. Though it was Saturday arrangements were made to start my chemo that day. The only disappointment was a lack of spiritual support, not even access to church services via TV. Scheduled surgery in Feb again excellent physical care but no indication this was anything but a public hospital. It was a contrast as a few weeks earlier I had been a patient at Harris Methodist Hospital in Texas and almost everyone from housekeeper to physician mentioned praying for me or some spiritual comment.

Jane Murray

Many kudos to AHSM for excellent care my husband received. ER staff excellent and efficient, ER doctor was great, thorough and very nice. Floor nurses outstanding - very proud of this hospital.

Nick P.

My girlfriend was treated not so well when she had to come to the emergency room regarding a very painful medical issue. She had never been to a hospital before and was very nervous (and in ALOT of pain). The other times I have had to use their emergency services I have had the same issues with rude staff (who seems to be under the impression that everyone there is just trying to get a prescription for narcotics). I will not be back if I can help it. St. Luke's South is a MUCH better facility.

Michaelanthony van Alst

Really great people

Audrey Lenhart

I dropped my husband off at the ER for mental health problems and alcoholism and after they admitted him to the 6th floor, they refuse to tell me whether or not he was admitted. It's not right to make me worry about him.

Jessica Kirby

Poor communication and made me feel like I was an inconvenience. I know there are sicker people in the ER than me but don’t treat me like I am wasting your time. I never knew who my nurse was and disconnected my own IV fluids to go to the restroom because no one came when I called. Hands down will never return to this ER again.

P Chan

ER -Waited 90 minutes to be seen. Vomited multiple times in their dirty restroom while waiting. After the rush was over- Sent home without any relief of pain, fever, or abdominal swelling. They did stop the vomiting. Took xrays but no ct scan. Had no call button to get a nurse when things got bad. Never saw a Dr, only the PA. Told me to follow up with family dr, and that dr could order tests to figure out the problem. Classy.

Kamilah Jackson

This is the most encouraging of faith hospital. From the time I stepped on and off the elevator the words of inspiration were everywhere. Thank you for taking care of my first LOVE my FATHER and bringing comfort. The decor is amazing. You can tell you care about your patient and workers by the way you taking care of your hospital. It is so beautiful!

Hazel Sky

Progressive Care unit nurses have no idea what being a nurse is all about.

Saad Syed

Unfortunately no one came to clean the bathroom after a baby delivery. As a result, we used a bloody, dirty bathroom for a while day before discharge time.

David Attebery

Wife was in er they acted like we wanted free meds instead of treating. toe and vascular disease symptoms left feeling mistreated and no respect after 8 mos no change in toe

Andria H

Camera was on when I had to change into a gown. Then someone came in way after to cover the camera with sticky notes. The doctor said it was like that the whole time when it was not. So I feel completely violated.

Shane Bernard

Got to the ER for chest pains and was in a room being evaluated in under 10 minutes. Had a procedure done and in a room in under 2 hours. Dr Patel was a great doctor. My nurses were top notch,Tandy, Stella and Elyse. They took great care of me. They also made my wife feel at home and at ease. There is no other hospital to consider than this one. Thanks for the great care.

Scott Caughlin

Absolutely horrible. Sat in ER for over 5 hours. Not one nurse, dr, etc ever checked on anyone. Complete run around when asking why and how they would take some back over others. I understand they have to put the worst cases first but this was by far unacceptable. Way too many choices. Will never use this facility again.

Tory Eylar

Amazing place all around, from staff, to doctors. This place is one of a kind when it comes down to it. I wouldn't go anywhere else. It strives to be the best in KC and getting the only 5 star rating in the metro I will admit is pretty outstanding.

SiSi ItsjustSiSithatsit

I went when I was 16 for an asthma attack & for heart issues. Nothing was wrong with the service then but when I went back as an adult for the same thing 2 years later and to get checked if I was anemic they completely dismissed me and treated me as if I was a liar. They took an EKG and then took my blood and came back to basically demand that I tell them if I smoke cigarettes or anything else. I am a social smoker but I hadn’t had cigarettes in months. They told me that because I smoked months ago this was the cause for my heart issues and breathing problems even though this has been an ongoing issue since I was an infant. They didn’t tell me if I was anemic but took my blood anyway and dismissed me as someone looking for attention. I don’t recommend going here unless you want to get treated like you’re doing something wrong by asking for help. Now I have medical bills to pay and no results. Thanks for nothing.

Just an FYI, this hospital will sell your medical debt very quickly to Kevin B Wilson’s debt collection agency law firm. This makes it very hard to use HSAs to pay off debt tax free, since it’s no longer through a hospital but a debt collection agency. I have had just a couple simple questions for the SMMC billing department and they have been extremely rude every time. It’s as though they see you as a low life as soon as they see you’re in the red, rather than as a potential future customer trying to pay medical debt in the most cost effective way possible. I will choose another hospital in the future just from dealing with the billing department. Oh and a lovely surprise $1,000 “facility fee” they charge. That was a fun one.

service: Had a dislocated shoulder and was in a pretty decent amount of pain... they got my right in, relieved the pain and re-set my shoulder. billing[Updated]: I used the emergency room, which was in network, and then receive an out of network bill for the doctor. I left a bad review and they actually reached out to me to help resolve the issue! The issue ended up not being the hospital's fault or my insurance's fault, it was just that my claim had just not been completely processed yet(my fault, oops). Overall I think this facility is above average cost, but was satisfied with services received.

I have had both of my babies at Shawnee Mission, my family has had surgery at Shawnee Mission, I myself have had surgery at Shawnee Mission and every time the care has been outstanding. Most recently I had an abnormal mammogram and had to go back for biopsy. The doctor took his time explaining everything so I knew exactly what to expect while he was doing it. He talked with me the entire time, telling me about himself & asking questions about me as well. The nurses and staff at the South Overland Park location were equally wonderful when I had my initial mammogram there. I am so proud to receive this kind of compassionate care every time I need care.

Michelle Lober

Visited the e.r. last week. Getting back to a room was incredibly fast! Seriously, thank you for not sticking us in a waiting room full of sick people! Overall the staff was very attentive and helpful. Initial diagnosis and treatment were quick but for some reason it took them forever to bring my daughter’s antibiotic perscription back to us so that we could leave. Other than that, it was probably the best e.r. visit we’ve had to endure.

Nicole Sanders

I would give this place A -20,000,000 stars, the nurse refused to listen to me - interrupted me - and HUNG UP ON ME! Unreal. I called on 3/30 and that nurse has no bedside manners. I have my MHSA and I’ve never witnessed such terrible manners horrendous bedside manner and just overall lack of patient care. I’d fire her immediately if I was her boss

Angela Pearson

We couldn’t have went to a better place! The nurses treated us like family, and the whole staff was very caring. Dr. Lovick did my husband’s back surgery and he was great.

Susan Potts

We would like to recommend to everyone Prairie Star Emergency room and Shawnee Mission Medical Center because the excellent care we received!!!! We were in the KC area from Arizona visiting family when my husband required emergency care. At Prairie Star emergency room he was seen within 5 minutes of arriving and treatment began soon after (on a Saturday night)! The ER physician at Prairie Star quickly diagnosed the problem and began necessary treatment! Our nurse Cathryn was wonderful!!!! She put us at ease with a balance of exceptional, efficient nursing skills as well as compassionate care of not only my husband (the patient) but my daughter and I as well. Cathryn’s gentle sense of humor put us at ease right away!!! She kept us well informed at all times! The transfer to Shawnee Mission Medical Center was seamless! At Shawnee Mission Medical Center we saw Dr. Wood, Oral surgeon early the next morning and continuing treatment was set up before we even left the hospital! Everyone was amazing! The hospitalist physicians we saw were kind and thorough!!! The nursing staff and support staff provided excellent care! When my husband ordered food after not eating for quite some time, the food arrived within 5 minutes!!!! Discharge was quick and easy!!!! We are so grateful to everyone to Prairie Star ER and Shawnee Mission Medical Center for their wonderful care.

My boyfriend came in with difficulty breathing. Doctor was INSANELY rude because he didn't have a regular doctor as he has no insurance and wouldn't give needed treatment because it required follow up care with a primary care and he didn't have a doctor's name to give him. Literally only sent him home with prescriptions at midnight. Disgusting.

Erica & Nick

We cannot say enough good things about SMH! They are not only our primary care physicians, but I recently had a FANTASTIC experience with an inpatient surgical procedure done by a physician who works out of here. I was amazed at how kind and efficient everyone was throughout the whole thing, from pre-op phone calls & tests, to my inpatient care and even the discharge process. The surgical center was clean, inviting and helpful at keeping my family informed throughout; my inpatient room was as nice as any hospital room can be (ha!); and the different nurses each day were friendly and attentive...I would think at least one of them would've been terrible, but they weren't at all. Even the housekeeper was full of smiles and asked how I was feeling everyday! And a couple days after being discharged, I received a thank you card that was personally signed by everyone from start to finish in the surgery process-impressive! I highly recommend them and will continue to only use physicians who practice out of this hospital.

Amy Meeker

This place has been my worst experience ever the nurses don’t seem to care or help they seem to be there for a paycheck they schedule appointments to refer you to other doctors and don’t help at all just pay for service with no treatment very disgusted with this place

Amanda Mariekc

I love this hospital and it's usually my go to hospital but geez after tonight my perception has definitely changed. I took my niece who was in the middle of an inevitable miscarriage to the ER

A Rice

Love the new cafeteria! The staff has always been so nice to me whenever I've been there. I went today and stopped at the cafeteria before going home and it looks great. Food was good. I enjoyed my visit there.

Jordan Harris

Been twice to the er there. Have not been seen either time. They will tell you you're next and then you will watch as everyone after you goes before you. And the nurses have too much of an I'm better then everyone attitude.

Jim Jones

All staff friendly and caring, thanks so much.

Lisa Hiesberger

Worst experience ever!! My 77 year old Mom was taken by ambulance for a fall. She was being treated for a severe UTI infection days before. She broke her collarbone and rather than wait for family to arrive, she was released and made to take a cab home during an ice storm with falling temps (windchill below zero). Her visit was so short that we weren’t given a chance to make appropriate arrangements for her. She wears leg braces and uses a cane. Neither of which, she had with her. The ER nurse, Erica, refused to let me talk to the Charge Nurse to rectify the situation. We were trying our best to get her transferred to KU where we originallyasked her to be taken. I was told by Erica that she had already called a cab and would not let her wait in the waiting room for family to pick her up. The next day, my Mom was admitted to KU. After reading so many negative reviews and with our own negative experience, I strongly discourage anyone from taking a loved there.

Abby Drinkwater

Psychiatric center is disgusting and they treat them like prisoners don’t care about the well being of their patients. Never take a loved one there wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy

Katherine Brown

At ER for over 5 hours. Went in after I heard a pop and my knee buckled and cannot put any weight on it. Pain was at a level 7 and I was given nothing while I waited. I should have had my leg iced and elevated, but was just shoved in the waiting area in a wheel chair. After having xrays and seeing a nurse practioner, I got no information on what might be wrong with my knee. Was finally given a prescription to fill. First medication was 6.5 hours after injury and well after leaving the ER. I got a knee brace from the nurse but no instructions on how to use it, how long to where it. I was not referred to another physician. I am pretty sure I need surgery, but was released with not knowing what my next step is. I never saw the NP again after she said she would look at xrays. So I guess Monday, I will try to call around and see if a doctor will see me. I still cannot put any weight on the knee and no one at SMMC ER cared. Next time trying the new St. Luke's ER just down the street.

Samantha Wolfskill

I recently broke my ankle and had to go to the ER at Advent. Everyone was really nice and helpful and made sure I got out of there fast. I returned to Advent to have my surgery as well. Everyone has been so kind and understanding, especially with setting up payment plans I can afford.

F F

When you show up for surgery, they spring a document on you that you must sign. Read it carefully! You MUST agree to let them videotape you and your procedures and share it “for science”. They will not allow you to modify the agreement. If you want the surgery you came for, you have to completely give up your privacy. Don’t be surprised if you see your face and body on YouTube!

I would strongly recommend visiting another ER if you are having medical problems. This ER makes too many mistakes. I'll list out the last two examples. Back in Oct-18, I visited the ER because it felt like my left foot was fractured. I was seen by a nurse practitioner only. They completed an x-ray and determined it wasn't fractured. The nurse practitioner diagnosed me with cellulitis and sent me away with a pain killer and an antibiotic. When the pain hadn't cleared up days later, I visited my primary medical care doctor, an internist. He looked at my foot and immediately said their diagnosis was wrong. He asked me if the nurse practitioner had bothered to lift my foot to determine if the swelling and redness dissipated. She didn't. Because it did, and because I complained of bone pain, there was no way it was cellulitis--rather, it was most likely gout of pseudogout. He prescribed me prednisone and more pain killers. He stated if this cleared up the problem then this was probably the diagnosis. It did. He then referred me to a rheumatologist. I complained to their patient care advocate, Katie Norwood. Although they wiped out my insurance copays, they didn't refund anything to my insurance and downplayed their responsibility in the wrong diagnosis. I filed a grievance with Blue Cross Blue Shield. Around mid Jan-2019, I had to go back to this ER. Again, they failed to properly diagnosis me and sent me away with elevated blood pressure of 180/130 without blood pressure treatment. It had been high for over two weeks. They knew the entire background of why I was there and my symptoms. I had also been seen in an ER a few weeks prior with similar symptoms. When I went to my follow up appointment with my internist, he was really upset. He stated Adventist ER is obviously not advocating on my behalf. He diagnosed me with PTSD and put me on two blood pressure medications: amlodipine and bisoprol. They knew everything that my internist knew in order to make the proper diagnosis. Plus, they have a psychiatric unit at the hospital, so they should fully be familiar with PTSD symptoms and should have been able to make a more accurate diagnosis than him. He showed me their medical records that they sent to his office and they went as far to write that I was fine. The lowest my blood pressure went while there was around 160ish over 110ish. He said they never should have sent me away without giving me blood pressure medication. MY OBGYN said she couldn't believe they didn't admit me. Again, I was all but blown off by their patient advocate when I complained. She sent me a follow up letter that said their protocol was fine. It was not, and I have had three doctors now validate they screwed up: my internist, my OBGYN, and a therapist. I have since filed another grievance with Blue Cross Blue Shield and I have requested an administrator contact me from the hospital. I also plan on filing complaints with the state. This ER is a joke.

My husband came to the Shawnee Mission medical center quite delicate of his heart and immediately the attention was successful and excellent. Dr. Robbins and his team work the best! Jim, the night nurse from the 5th floor, and Melissa. The day nurse are excellent professional, dedicated and careful, explaining to the patient all his doubts. very grateful to everyone for their dedication and professionalism in such difficult times for us.

Emmy Zimmerman

Dr. Carlo Jurani saved my husband's life. The best Doctor I've ever met! He is very nice, approachable, down to earth, very patient person(Doctor). The best surgeon, very smart and very professional. He took good care of my husband during his surgery and after surgery. I am very grateful to God for him and all the staffs of Shawnee Mission Medical Center. They're great people! I am really glad that Dr. Carlo Jurani is my husband's surgeon. He is amazing Doctor. Thank you very, very much Shawnee Mission Medical Team for everything! God bless all of you! ❤❤❤

The nurses there were so kind. Everyone from the meal servers, nurses aids and doctors are wonderful. Plus it has a spiritual aspect that I appreciated.

Amanda Rose

Delivered at the Birth Center and had an amazing experience. Everyone from the staff to the nurses and doctors were awesome! They were nice and kind, they answered my questions and addressed my concerns in a direct manner. They had great senses of humor and made sure I did not feel embarrassed about anything. I would not deliver my babies anywhere else.

Megan Walker

For the birth of my first baby and for our stay at the birth center at SM, I can honestly say I have zero complaints. I never thought I would be able to say that about my birthing experience! But my nurse(s) helped immediately put me at ease and ensure I had everything I needed, when I needed it and sometimes when I didn’t even know I needed it! I also have experience with the ER at SM and I can say that they were able to get me in quickly seen within minutes of walking in the door.

I am a veteran and had an MRI done at (Advent Health, Shawnee Mission Medical Center) earlier this morning (2/15). I arrived at 8am, and left less thsn an hour later! Everything went on time, and everyone involved from receptionist, to staff, to techs, were extremely kind, caring, and did their job superbly. I highly recommend this place! Blessings, John

My hospital stay was suppose to be 3 days. Stayed 6. I have nothing negative to say. Staff was very attentive to my needs. I would recommend this hospital to anyone. Thank you for making my stay as comfortable as it could be.

Mike Koehn

I just returned home from a two week visit. I stayed on the seventh and then the forth floor and I am so grateful for the excellent nursing staff they employ. Every need I had was attended to quickly and every conversation ended with " is there anything else I can get for you".

Brian Wright

We were called and informed our surgery had been rescheduled for 9am and to be here at 7am. They come in at 9am, after prepping my wife for surgery, to tell us it will be at 11:30. It's now 12:30, her original time, and we are still waiting. Your time means absolutely nothing to anyone here! Update...I was tracked down while still in the hospital and given a face to face apology and an explanation. Seemed genuinely apologetic. Offered me a free meal, I declined, but appreciated the follow up.

Ashia Sihongheune

Garbage hospital. No one cares, wait times are ridiculous, and finding a competent nurse is impossible. Please try justifying having a person sitting in the ER for 2 hours after having seizures, because that's apparently what this hospital is all about. Staff is rude and every time I've been there, doctors and nurses are just sitting around talking when things could be getting done. You're better off going to Saint Luke South, where they actually care about their patients and will give you amazing service.

Malisa Allen

"First do no harm " only applies at this hospital if you have health insurance.

I brought my daughter into the emergency room for a intentional OD. My daughter has seen a therapist and psychologist for over 4 years with no luck and has battled major depression, ADHD, ODD, and anxiety for about 5 years; however, the young male social worker was able to assess her in 5 minutes and he recommended impatient treatment. My daughter was transported to a mental health facility, but after we left, the State was notified of a possible child in need. If the social worker cared for the well being of my daughter so much, maybe he should of spent more than 5 minutes with her instead of flirting at his desk with all the nurses that were on duty. We did not refuse any medical observations or treatments, but they notified the State of Kansas anyways. If they would of taken the time to find out the facts, maybe they would of had the information to make better decisions. BTW, she was released in 3 days from the mental health center.

jlc1167

Dont know what kind of procedure my niece went in for but it was a one day out patient prcedure.. surgeon accidentally punctured her aorta.. now she's facing a life threatening condition and is on a ventilator.. guess she should have read the reviews of this hospital before choosing to go here

Vicki Lincoln

Went in Saturday morning on 5/18 to have blood drawn. Arrived at 6:58 was waiting outside the door when lab tech cracked the door open and told me I had to register up front being she was the only one there. Walked back up to the register lights still off and needless after waiting 10 minutes I left. If a place opens at 7am staff should be there set up and easy to go prior to that.

John Mueller

Had cancerous prostate removal surgery performed via the DaVinci surgical robot. Everyone I interacted with was very positive and reassuring. Post-op I had very attentive care and good guidance on how to treat wounds and catheter upon release. Very positive experience.

kiara cole

Amazing fast quality service DR. Kate Rocks

Pauline Nelson

My visit was a very pleasant experience. Everyone was very helpful and I didn't have to wait!

Daniel Snyder

Been here several times. It's been 5/5 every time. Great medical attention, great support staff, great facilities here.

Kevin Swisher

I went to the emergency and got a dietician and a nurse practitioner not a doctor, did not help my condition and got stuck with a huge bill thanks a lot!

Cynthia Souder

My father was brought to the emergency room for dementia symptoms that included a few minutes when he passed out. I found that the nurse that helped us in the emergency room was excellent. The tests were run and No issues were found. The doctors wanted to admit him to the hospital for further tests. I expressed my opinion that someone with dementia will become even more agitated when in an unfamiliar environment. That is what happened. I was asked to come back to the hospital and keep him calm because the calming medications were not working quickly enough. After two hours, the medications had not helped his anxiousness. A physician was contacted and after waiting for his arrival, he denied any more medication. That is one thing. After talking with him for a few minutes it became obvious to me that this Dr. had not even read his chart. That is not acceptable. I think that doctors should actually have charts and facts before deciding on medications. The nurses were wonderful. The doctors lacking in knowledge and professionalism. Also, issue with admitting a 96 year old with dementia after all tests came back with no findings was not the right call in my opinion.

I’d advise anyone who loves their family memebers to come to this hospital over Saint Luke’s on the Plaza, Research, Centerpoint & a few others on the Missouri side. 5th Floor Orthopedics: Female nurse - First name unsure? Last initial M @1:50pm on Tuesday July 23rd helped me find my mother in-law’s room when my boyfriend had wondered off & I couldn’t find where he was. She was blonde if I remember correctly but I do not remember her first name unfortunately!!! She was super kind & that meant a lot to me because I’ve stayed in 5 different hospitals in the Kansas City area & have been treated poorly in several of those other hospitals. Abby D. in PT the same day was wonderful & extremely caring with my boyfriend’s mother Virginia. Melinda T. helped me learn how to change the bandage properly so when we went home I could assist my mother in law properly! Great team!!!! Joi was the most thoughtful towards all of us. She asked everyone of us: myself, my bf, his brother, & their mom (the patient) how we were, if we needed anything at all. She was upbeat & just WOW! Really truly WOW! Talk about a professional that cares deeply about her patients & job! She even brought my service animal, Karma a bowl of water as we waited for our mom/mother-in-law to be discharged. Great staff! Wonderful hospital! Khali CNA checked her vitals & was just as upbeat & positive as the rest of this staff. I truly wish that when I had my head on collision 2 springs ago that I had been sent to this hospital instead of Research Medical Center. I’m thankful for Research saving my life but I wasn’t treated like my mother in law has been treated here & I can’t say enough how grateful I am to see a patient treated with the upmost respect, care, & attended to so well. Anna V was very helpful as we waited to be discharged & my bf’s mother needed a last dose of her pain medicine because she hadn’t been able to be discharged quite yet & began hurting pretty badly. Anna made sure they got on top of it immediately! We literally only waited 1min!!! Thank you for treating my family member like a human being. After staying in 5 different hospitals these past 2.5yrs I’ve seen the ups & downs of hospitals & can’t tell you enough how impressed I am with the care here!!! Ohndrea was super awesome getting us out to the car & was amazingly helpful escorting us out! Amazing conversationalist & another gleaming example of this hospital’s expectations for employees who truly go above & beyond every surrounding hospital we’ve been to. The staff seemed happy with their jobs which makes me believe they care about their hiring process & the quality of whose on their team.

Tammy Rutledge

Mom was taken there from dialysis and has been there for a week. Even though she is not ready they want to send her home with health care a couple of days a week. My daughter and I will be the ones taking care of her for the most part. But I feel she should be going to a physical therapy rehab instead of home. When she comes home we want her capable of helping us take care of her. Meaning help getting up to go to the bathroom and in and out of the tub. And she is incapable of doing that now.

Dawn Kroeger

My husband was recently had a sudden, serious health issue arise so we went to SM ER at Prarie Star. Our nurse and doctor there were amazing! They were informative and caring. They got my husband transferred over to the main hospital at SM.. The care there continued to exceed our expectations. Everyone was caring, helpful, professional, and friendly. I highly recommend Shawnee Mission Med Center!!

Rose Traul

I've been a patient of SMMC since I was a baby, and continued going there as an adult as that is where I've always gone. The WHOLE SMMC system is a mess, from physicians, to billing, and ESPECIALLY the ER. While there are a few diamonds in the rough, most every one there is incredibly rude and blows off any of your health concerns. I had a very serious and potentially fatal health condition that went unnoticed for YEARS as every doctor I saw just blew off my symptoms. Finally, after discovering it, I had major surgery and was in the hospital for five days. After I recovered, I started having issues, and yet, despite having major surgery, my complaints were once again ignored and blown off. I ended up AMAing from an ER visit because of how goddamn rude the doctor was. Now, because of this, my insurance was not going to cover the bill, but instead of receiving a bill, I get debt collectors hounding me because for some reason, the address they had on file for me was some random place that I had never lived. My address hasn't changed in years! The billing department is just handing out random addresses now, apparently, just to get debt collectors after you for a bill I NEVER RECEIVED! Funny thing, I was so used to being treated rudely and having to wait months just to see someone. I go to KU Med ONCE, and not only do they treat me seriously, they actually come up with a treatment plan for a condition I developed due to the surgery, that EVERYONE at SMMC ignored. I was a patient here my whole life, but not anymore. Seriously, just go to KU Med. It will save you a lot of time and stress.

Xai Yang

I had a surgery about one month.. The doctor and nurse here was very nice and great people.. Thank u very much for taking care of me.. My God bless u guys all..

cindy smith

I would NOT recommend this hospital and we will NEVER go back!! Communication between nurses and doctors is horrible. Listening to my mom cry and scream for 4 hours of intense pain, having the nurses say we don’t know when she will get her procedure done and if they had not heard back in 2 hours they would call again. It took a family member having to knock on doors in Radiologjy before we got any attention. Finding out her IV had been leaking for over 24 hours. Heat in her room broke, took 4 hours to move her to another room and that room was dirty. With enough complaining and working with the wonderful patient advocate they must have flagged our file because after all of that we had great nurses! But you should get great nurses and doctors from the very beginning. I realize the nurses work so very hard and they have a lot of patients but instead of building a new multi million dollar family center why don’t they hire more nurses so they are not so overworked!

Andrew Mayo

My experience here was terrible. I went to the ER for a pain in my abdomen that felt like something was about to burst. The most terrible hospital experience in my life. It took 2 1/2 hours to get into a room and when I did I had to wait another 2 hours. They gave me a script for something you can already buy over the counter. For something they have already ruled out and could not be the case. The doctor was terrible and acted like I was there to steal pain medication. I will never come back here.

Cate Duerst

I delivered my daughter at Shawnee Mission and loved my experience. She came a few weeks early so spent a week in the NICU. The nurses and doctors took such good care of us! During such a vulnerable time as a new mother I knew we were in the best place. Of course my daughter was the focus, but all the NICU nurses made it a point to check on me too. I know if we are blessed enough to have another baby, Shawnee Mission is the only place for us!

Michelle Johnson

They took very good care of me Dr.green was awesome come up with care plan for me thank you so much

John Ciupak

Had colon surgery there. Was great except for one weird night nurse.

roxanna gonzalez

November 15th while I wait in the lobby from 8pm to 8:30 pm I saw two families arrive to visit and they came in with covered baby carriers and I never saw the reception person asking or checking if there were babies, many children running in the hallway where they were supposes that there are people resting after having had cesarean. The security need more attention.

Dan R

Visited the Emergency unit today do to pains on the left side of chest. Was in lobby under 10 minutes, before being taken back to be seen. The doctor and his staff are awesome. Kept me informed concerning all steps being taken, and what the next steps would be. Dr. Chapman was very courteous and understanding concerning the diagnosis, and treatment plan detail. This was the first time I had been to this hospital as a patient. The experience and warm feeling from all staff who interacted with me on this first visit was Excellent. Keep up the good service staff of AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. Thank you, Dan R.

James Brink

My wife was in this hospital on several occasions Once she was there dr.kozad was the doctor. She came in the room told my wife their was no more they could do for her and sent her home. She was taken back to the hospital 3 days later, Ended up getting a double transfusion..which was supposed to have been done the first time around. Her hemoglobin level was so dangerously low she almost died. It was a bad experience Won't ever be back Luckily now she is with doctors who treat her like a human being.

Terrie Kallal

My husband had an emergency appendectomy here on a weekend. The care was excellent!!! They took great care of my husband and could not have been nicer. Our surgeon Dr Wilder was excellent and kind. My husband went home the very next day and felt great! We even spent the afternoon at a friend’s house then drove home to St Louis. True story. Our nurse Sonni couldn’t have been sweeter and also very competent and knowledgeable. Hospital was very clean and quiet. If you like to watch TV, great cable with separate movie selections. So even though we spent our vacation weekend in KC in the hospital at Shawnee Mission, it was still a great weekend! All of our friends we planned to visit, came to see us at the hospital instead.

Jamie Leeper

The most incredible people took care of my wife during the birth of our two boys. They were exceptional and worked tirelessly to make sure the experience was as enjoyable as possible despite the obvious pain. I cannot say enough good things about everyone that we interacted with. THANK YOU!

Samantha P

I went the Shawnee Mission Medical Outpatient 5 days ago for a lumbar puncture. I was warned that I might get the worst headache I've ever had from the procedure, which would then necessitate a blood patch. Saturday I wake up in the worst pain. The instruction sheet says to wait 24 hrs to call, so I do. I call Sunday and am told radiology isn't open. I can go to the er or leave a message got radiology, who did the procedure. I leave a message. Monday comes, and I am told by Radiology that actually I have to talk to the Pain Center. I talk to them, and they can't help me yesterday, they are too busy. They can help me today, but only if I show up first thing, at 7 am. I explain I live an hour away and at that hour I'd only have my 84 yr old father, who's had a stroke and has some difficulty with highway driving, to take me, and I knew that'd be too early for him. So they can't help me. I ask about the ER. She said she doesn't think they can do the procedure there. I ask about Mosaic Hospital, which is close, could they call them and see if they could give me the blood patch? No, they won't do that. So I've been only able to lie down now, flat, for 5 days, and it's horrible. No one will help me. I would not recommend you get this procedure here.

Michael Owen

Wife and I had our babies here, twins. The NICU staff was amazing, 5 stars there. The 2nd floor birthing center also amazing, very friendly and caring staff, very outgoing. The 3rd floor, which is basically mom and baby was kind of drab and depressing for some reason, the rooms just didnt feel like they are up to par with the stuff on the second floor birthing center, I get it the babies out, you'll get your money now, why spend more on bettering the rooms for people on their way out? The nursing staff on the 3rd floor also didnt feel as helpful or welcoming to me and my wife. The furniture for dad to sleep on was probably the worst thing i've ever slept on ever, and i've slept on my share of couches :P Overall though the staff here is generally welcoming and helpful. I'm glad we trusted them to bring our beautiful babies into this world.

karen pierpoint

Clean, friendly staff, beautiful rooms. Medical Staff is wonderful

Kim Hale

Took my Mom to your ER on 09/18/2019 and the Doctor that seen my mom was the absolutely worst. Dr. Fanning had a horrible bedside manner and talked to my mom like she was stupid and unimportant. I have never encountered a Dr quite like her.

Darrell Lusebrink

Visited er and had NO wait. Was admitted to hosp within a couple hours and had MRI asap. All staff and drs were great.

Elle Eff

Probably the worst hospital in the area. The emergency room is always crazy full because it seemed like they got to two people an hour. Their check in staff are not friendly and are very rude. Try to avoid this ER. Not sure of of main hospital services but the primary care practice and other specialty area are pretty well run.

The ER waiting area had several areas and even a few couches. They were very attentive. The staff worked well together and the Doctor was knowledgeable. They actually listen to the patient and did everything they could to accommodate me. Best hospital experience ever!!

Mike Budde

You can say what you want about this hospital. This hospital had caring enough doctors they preformed an elective surgery at no cost to me. No other hospital would have done that.

Anne Stutsman

I came in with muscle pain and spasms in my arm, legs and somewhat my chest. I had a very high sugar at home. I am a very brittle diabetic and have a history of very significant heart history. I have had a 5 way bi-pass and about 7 stints. So, they did get me back in the ER quick but, from the beginning a nurse named "Rebecca" was rude. She kept saying very rude remarks to me about my diabetes. No empathy for it or my pain. For some reason she said my suggers was low for it just having a high reading and eating a breakfast sandwich on the way there. She kept disciplining and scolding me about the diabetes and minimizing my pain. My pain level went from a 4-5 to a 9 with no treatment and only a blood test for electrolytes done. Also my IV was not on a pump just gravity pull. I got dizzy fast and bp dropped very low. An older nurse came by but not her. She never came in to readdress my pain level even though I called on the call button with severe pain increase and when she dismissed me she was still rude making rude comments and making light of my pain and numbness. She said it was all probably temporary from a migraine or something. I don't think she understands the disease process. Too bad because I think the doctor was nice and the nurse who sent me back that works triage up front. I had no real testing done and I really question the glucometer and the blood test being normal. Also why did my bondrop then go high? I can't believe they didn't do and EKG or retest my sugar. My A1C has been 12-14 for over 2 years.

The er staff are worthless. They are mean. When you stick up for yourself, you are seen as a troublemaker. I was told by the charge nurse that I am no longer welcome there. They were supposed to give me a prescription; however, they were in such a hurry to get me out of there that they did not give me the antibiotic. It was too late to call it into my pharmacy. They wouldn't do it during the day. So, they told me to come back and pick it up. However. I am not welcome there so cannot go back to get it. Besides, I have to take pain meds and cannot drive while taking them. I will never go to that er again. Never. Dr. Prater decided from the moment he saw my face that there was nothing wrong with me. He hadn't done a single test and hadn't jo me yet decided there was nothing wrong. He is the worst doctor there. Their patient advocate is useless. She is out of town till 9/10. So, don't bother telling me to contact her. When I do contact her, she just says they can't discuss it with me. What's the point of an advocate if they won't do anything. I was told unless I have a life-threatening situation, I was not going to be treated there. I wouldn't take my life-threatened self to your hospital ever again. If I learn something was missed at this last visit, you can expect to hear from my attorney. Negligence and malpractice. PS. I went to the outpatient are yesterday. From the valet parking to the volunteer to the person in Radiology where I needed to go to pick up a CD of my procedures, they were excellent. I'd give yesterday's visit a 5. Now if they could only pass their behavior on to the er and their doctors and nurses.

First class facility, first class people, love the faith message. You can feel they have a higher calling. My son's 6th surgery here.

Came in to the ER with my one year old son yesterday. I expressed the pain he was in and asked if we could get help intimidatingly. After about 2 min ( which i thought was pretty quick) a woman came out and picked up his chart and asked why he was there. At the time of their conversation another family walked in with an elderly woman and the woman from the back stated that she wanted to wait and see what they needed. She then proceeded to talk and wait while my child cried from his pain. The elderly woman was taken to the back and my sons chart was returned to the tray. The way i saw it was that his injury was not as compelling as hers and he could wait, which was not a very professional message to send. After 10-15 more minutes of waiting we finally made our way back and he was seen. Apart from feeling like we weren't important enough the staff in the back was nice however, we will not be returning and we will be finding a new hospital for our new born.

I am leaving a one star for now unless my overall judgement of the hospital changes. I will leave my review as short as possible without revealing too many details. I have taken this issue to heart because it involves both my wife and first born child. A word of caution make sure to pay close attention to your meds I mean extremely close even if you think they will get it correct dont count on it. My wife and I gave med lists to both the maternity navigator and labor and delivery which were correctly entered in the system. Somewhere along the way the wrong dose was given which started with her first dosage given by the hospital. My wife was only recieving a 1/4 of her dosage while being at the hospital on days 1 and 2 at the same time she had to be placed on other medicines which were not forgiving in the least. Her BP was all over the place those 2 extra days and was given meds to prevent a stroke. A doctor finally caught the error and her bp went back to normal and didnt even need those nasty meds during labor. Son was born in week 36 but if the med issue never happened would of likely been born in late week 37. I am beyond angry because this should have never happened. The hosptial staff get empathy from me but not my sympathy. Where in the world are the safe guards. Nurses missed pharmacist missed computer system was faulty so I was told. Bottomline is how do we fix this going forward. We will not be a statistic and we will not let this happen to others we were lucky this time. I encourage everyone that has a safety issue contact the joint commission who gives periodic audits. I am so disappointed in this hospital I have always held it to a high standard my whole entire family has used them since the day it opened.

I arrive at approximately 9:30pm with my daughter screaming and balling in pain. She had also been puking until she could not anymore do to nothing in her system. She complained about abdominal pain. 2 hours of waiting in lobby before getting called back to room. We then sit an additional hour with her screaming and balling for another hour. One of the staff come to room and literally closed the door to muffle her cries. I opened the door completely. Here we wait at 230 still no news about what's going on. She had blood work and a sonogram done around 1200. Next time I will drive futher to get better service. Worst hospital ever.....

Dr Ann Ruiz is The Best!!! Don’t ever go to Menorah hospital

Best hospital in the Kansas City area. I've experienced care at Adventhealth and KU health system. I have to say that while KU was adequate, Adventhealth was far superior in terms of quality nursing staff and doctors. All of my nurses and doctors were personable, reassuring, and seemed to genuinely care about me. The nurses would go out of their way to get me anything I needed without hesitation. I would highly recommend Adventhealth to anyone looking for a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

A very close relative of mine was very sick and taken to the hospital by ambulance. This relative is unable to walk and to get her into the ambulance they used her sling to transport her into the ambulance. Long story short, the Hospital can’t find it!!! I hear this happens to so many people who are so ill and there isn’t anyone that cares to think of a solution to keep patients belongings safe. I was supposed to hear back from a young lady at the hospital, who promised she would get back to me. It’s been three days. Why does this have to be so complicated????

Briana Arensberg Smith

A wonderful place to have a baby!!

Roberta Herbert

My adult grandson has been treated in the ER and inpatient. Excellent care. He was treated with respect and compassion.

Reed

Extremely disappointed with this hospital and would not recommend this facility to any patient.

Lili Aleman

Nurses here hurt more than help. They wouldn’t listen to how the patients feels. My mom suffered more from this place, would not recommend to anyone.

I've thought for a while about how to word this review. Had I left this a year ago I would have given four or five stars. I had just had the most positive birth experience at SMMC. However, as I reflected on what caused that birth to be so special I came to the conclusion that it was due to the support I received from my midwife. In all actuality, my experience at the hospital was not that pleasant. From the tour to the day of delivery little things occurred that cause our experience with this hospital to be less than ideal. Since the hospital is now insisting they have never and will not ask hospitalist to support independent midwives (with the mission of seeking choice in childbirth for mothers) to deliver there I thought my review should be specific to just the hospital. When my husband and I arrived to our tour and stated our wishes we were treated somewhat coldly. I couldn't figure out why this woman was being so short until our marital status came up. My husband has a hyphenated last name. When I stated we were married the lady seemed surprised. She even mentioned our different last names. After she realized we were married her disposition grew warmer. It was so obvious that my husband and I spoke of it in the car after leaving. We chose to blow it off. On the day of delivery my husband and I arrived to the hospital after laboring at home for as long as possible (discussed and approved in hospital tour) Because this was our first rodeo I told him to park the car and walked in alone. I had never felt more uncomfortable and judged in my life. In active labor I understand what I must have looked like but if SMMC wanted to be the hospital for natural childbirth then why did so many people ask me why I waited so long to get to the hospital. Additionally I sat in check-in for over ten minutes dealing with paperwork that I thought had been handled during the tour. When my husband and I were finally moved to the deliver floor I sat in the waiting room for over 20 minutes in active labor waiting for a nurse to come get me and take me to a room. My midwife was on her way but had not yet arrived. Once I was finally taken to a room I learned I had been assigned a nurse that had zero respect for natural childbirth. I tried to explain that I had a birth plan and that I wasn't getting an IV (I was negative for group B strep and it wasn't medically necessary) but she did not care. I explained that I wasn't supposed to be hooked up to electronic monitoring of my contractions. I could feel them just fine myself. Again she didn't care. There was no kindness and zero bedside manner. Once my midwife arrived my husband witnessed this woman roll her eyes and ignore my midwife multiple times. I was so thankful when another nurse was finally assigned to us. Our second nurse was an absolute angel. Once my daughter was born we saw several nurses. Many were nice but there was one that yelled at me about my daughter's latch as I struggled to figure out how to BF. I begged for a lactation consultant for my entire visit. One finally came in about an hour before I left and handed me paperwork. My husband was out of the room when she came in. When he found out that she didn't even help me feed the baby he found her and insisted she help me. Overall, the birth of my daughter was beautiful, but again with the exception of one nurse during the delivery and a few in maternity care, SMMC doesn't get the credit. My midwife does. It is a shame other women who come to your hospital wishing for a natural birth experience will be fooled by your slick marketing of calling labor and delivery a "birth center". If their experience is anything like mine they be assured that their wishes are not problem then in the moment they'll be bullied into intervention they don't want. That is exactly what I was experiencing until my midwife walked in the room and fought for my voice to be heard. Without allowing midwives who advocate for options in birth you are limiting the experience women will have and that is ultimately why one star is the deserving rank.

I selected a PCP and was thoroughly impressed with Dr Hendricks.

This is a wonderful facility. The cardiac staff is really top notch. They make you feel at home, cared for, and well informed. The facilities are all very modern. Even the parking is nice. I will try really hard to have my next cardiac incident here.

Nicole Droste

The standard for nurses in the Birth Center is go above and beyond the call of duty. I am a hard stick when placing an IV and terrified of needles. The nurse talked to me about it and then instead of trying herself called down someone who very rarely has trouble placing an IV. Together they got me through the process with very little pain. This was my 4th child, but first C section and I was not looking forward to it, but the anesthesiologist talked me through the whole process and was the comforting voice for both me and my husband through the surgery. I can’t say enough good things, from NICU to Birth Center our stay was awesome and I am very glad that I had each of the medical staff I had. They made a potentially overwhelming experience easy and as stress free as possible.

After a family death I was in the Behavioral Health Unit. Overall, it helped me, but several staff were rude, unkind or dismissive. Many staff never made eye contact or smiled. The worst issue, however, was the group leaders. Some were just neophytes or under-trained, but others did actual harm (Jerry e.g.) By arrogance and complete incompetence . One staff (Melissa) was verbally abusive and very rude, but denied it when it was reported to the Charge Nurse. She has been there for four years, according to her, and that is scary. Another patient had her meds withheld as a control tactic. The staff refused to give me an evaluation form. Nina SCHUNCK M.S. LCSW

This place deserves negative stars. Let me also first say to whomever replies to these comments the owner, you are wasting your time if you reply to my comment because your entire facility and business office are full of useless arrogant morons. Now we begin my story. On this date 1-25-18 I have spent 8 hours in this place. All for what? 3 CT scans, 5 viles of blood work, for an obviously new nurse practitioner(all worthless) to tell me she had no clue what was wrong with me. So no I am not paying the bill because the nurse practitioner whom I is on duty at the moment looks and is identical to “Barbie Girl” in the song Barbie girl. No sense whatsoever. The lady who runs the CT machine knew more about what was wrong with me than anyone else in the building. Also in this 8 hours wasted of my life, there were at least 8 separate nurses that came in and out of my room and not one of them knew anything about what was going on. Meanwhile everyone in between spends there time gossiping at the desk. For all I know I could have some internal bleeding problem and be dead before I wake up yet with these people’s stupidity I will never know unless I am dead when I wake up. Would they have cared if I died there? Survey says “hell no!”. The entire facility completely lacks any sanitation whatsoever, the lobby and waiting room were filthy and the bed in the room I was sent to had blood(not my blood) on the side of it. And certainly if anyone goes in here and uses or says the word “pain” yes rather than truthfully evaluating the person, which a doctor with some level of common sense can do, they will automatically label the person a drug user abuser. I have news for you idiots, not everyone in some sort of pain is a farking drug user!!! This place is total trash!!! Do not go here if you value your life or want to be cared for by a decent real physician not a half ass nurse practitioner. Yes I’m using vulgar language because I am sick of these people getting rich off of us the blue collar working people, and treating us like we are the depth of society. So to those who want an honest opinion DO NOT EVER GO HERE OR ANY AFFILIATION OF SHAWNEE HEALTHCARE. WHAT A JOKE! All I can do is hope that since I wasted 8 hours of my life there, after I take a nap that I will make up and make it to a much better mecial facility and get the proper care that a person deserves. I will be damned not dead if I’m ever near this place for eternity. УБЕДИТЕСЬ С ВАШЕЙ ШОУ-МИССИЕЙ !!!

Waiting to be seen in emergency room ..3 hours and still not seen for a blood clot...this place sucks

Kelsey Strothkamp

I was seen last Thursday evening in the ER. The wait to be seen wasn’t horrible, nor was the turnaround for lab results. I did get more information from this visit than I had received from any doctor beforehand and am grateful that someone truly believed I had an issue going on and was able to prove it. However, I was advised that my primary care doctor was going to be receiving all of the information from my visit. I called my doctor today, nothing has been received. I also tried to call Shawnee Mission today to get copies of my own personal records.. I waited on hold for 15 mins. When I got to the correct department, a person picked up and hung up the phone immediately before I could even speak. I tried to call back and was advised that the office had closed for the day two minutes ago. That was super unprofessional as I HAD called prior to them being closed, and they HUNG UP ON ME to avoid assisting. Very disappointed. The next day I had called back to try to speak with someone about my issue and the lady on the phone interrupted me before I even finished asking with "That sounds like the Emergency Dept didn't do their job." So instead of helping me, she pushed the blame on someone else. I was extremely aggravated.

Daynise Hartley

You missed sepsis. SEPSIS on an immunocompromised patient with an indwelling catheter. The ER doctor said, "Why are you here?" When I came in with a fever of unknown origin and unexplained pain. I went to Shawnee Mission several times for the fever- not ONCE did anyone run a blood culture. Thank God I went to Menorah or I'd be dead. P.S. no need for the canned "we prefer to handle this offline" response. I truly don't care what you'd prefer

NOT impressed at all. Began coming here for birth center because it was suppose to be “the best”. All information confidential right?? No. **HUGE HIPPA violations!!!** Our info of the pregnancy and gender was told to outside sources and before anyone questions... no we did not announce it or put it on social media. This hospital is an absolute joke. Some would say just find a different hospital... trust me we considered. But what’s the point when ADVENT HEALTH Shawnee Mission already let our info leak!! Disappointment!

I can't say enough good things about this place if you are having a baby. My daughter was premature and their NICU staff is amazing. So caring and driven to help children. I have two kids and they were both born here. One was premature (totally fine now) and the other was a full term baby. Although having a baby early is rough, the staff was outstanding. The staff was great for regular full term births too. If you are having a baby - go here! Their facilities are excellent as well, their cafeteria actually has good food.

Vickie Durham

I am happy to say my overall experience was excellent care and kindness from the admission clerk to the surgical staff, nurses treating me in recovery and the physical therapists helping me to get my mobility. I’m sure the unsung heroes are the cleaning and cafeteria staff which are so vital for a well run hospital.

Rebecca Bailey

A million thanks to the AdventHealth Lenexa Emergency Department for taking amazing care of my son after a biking accident. The kindness, compassion and care we received was beyond expectations.

Donielle Shockey

Like my Ob/gyn but hate the Emergency Room Department. Terrible bed side manners from Dr. Kramer. The nurses are even worse. Stay clear of Shawnee Mission Emergency Room.

Scott Uhl

I had the pleasure of spending almost a week on the 6th floor at this Hospital. I had one amazing nurse by the name of Jennifer she work days and then just seem to know how to deal with me because sometimes I can be a little difficult. The food was not bad, the rooms were fairly clean, the overall staff was nice enough. I had a couple accidents while I was staying there that I do not feel we're attended to probably the way they should have been. But overall the experience wasn't too bad.

Marie Hepford

I have be a patient here since the 1990s, and was very happy with them until about two years ago. I was seriously misdiagnosed and given medications that should have been on my allergy list. We discovered that when they transferred their records a few years earlier, they neglected to transfer my allergy list . This mistake had me sick with reactions for almost two months in addition to putting me in the Medicare doughnut hole. They finally let me see my records and there were several other errors in them as well. My records are now correct, but it really shattered my confidence in them.

Guthrie

When asking to speak to my father the lady said I could not speak to him because he was not awake. I simply asked how do you know if he's awake, can you open the door and check. All she kept saying was I'll give him the message. I can't wake him up. And I repeated myself asking how do you know if they're awake or not. And all she would say is I'll give him the message. That's the end of this conversation, in a rude tone then hung up on me. Didnt even say thanks for calling.

Zakariya Alshawish

I had both my kids here, and I was very appreciative of the services provided, but the billing for the ER is atrocious. I had 3 ER trips in the last year for my kids (using 2 separate insurers), and SMMC either don't categorize items correctly for your insurance company, or they intentionally bill you wrong, and hope you'll just pay the difference. All 3 times I've went in we have insurance with a clear co-pay for ER, and SMMC always bills me well above it. I've spent hours working with them, to correct it. Total waste of my time. I imagine if all the people who have had this issue started billing SMMC for their time that was wasted due to mistakes (intentional or otherwise), these terrible practices would stop.

Nancy Taylor

My daughter went to the ER Thursday for blacking out, chest pain and numbness in her left arm. The ER staff was slow but the doctor there was very attentive and concerned. Said she probably had a TIA or mini-stroke and admitted her to the cardiac unit. I arrived the next morning to find that no orders were in place for her. After seeing a nurse practitioner they finally order tests. When the doctors finally spoke to us that afternoon, they were rude and unsympathetic because the tests they ordered did not show evidence of a TIA. When the cardiologist first came into the room he said my daughter was getting an MRI of her arm but the discharge paperwork said it was done on the brain. He said he was releasing her because the tests were all normal - but she was being tested as we spoke. When I tried to explain that my daughter was still having issues, he threw his hand up in the air to like block me from speaking, and before I could complete my sentence told me that this could have been caused by acid reflux. What does acid reflux have to do with memory loss, heart fluctuations and arm numbness. We saw two doctors in CCU yesterday. Both times they only wanted to discuss discharge. When we tried to discuss additional tests or even some preventive measures they were cold, rude and acted like we were a bother and said they were discharging her. They didn't even want to discuss her condition or investigate further. They wouldn't discuss her symptoms or even admit it was possibly a TIA. They kept cutting off our conversations and focusing on discharge. One doctor even went so far to rudely say she wasn't going to "make up a diagnosis for us." Hurt and frustrated, we just keep silent and they discharged her. It's Saturday now and my daughter still is experiencing a headache, short term memory loss, general weakness and the inability to use her left arm. Strokes are serious and this hospital didn't take my daughter's very seriously. Tests or no tests, something is still very wrong and these doctors didn't care to find problem. If it doesn't show up on the tests they decide to do, you are out of luck. They don't listen to their patients. We will follow up with our primary for further tests, rehab and to discuss possible treatment. We also will never go back to this hospital. These doctors only want to do certain tests and boot you out the door. They will discharge you with the same problem you came to them seeking help for.

Horrible Hospital. Drove from Wichita, Kansas to be seen here, that was a mistake. Staff in the ER are rude. Walked in there looking for a room, Nurses and Doctors looking at me not offering any assistance. Room 12 in ER has Bugs. I am not sure if the staff has been trained on AIDT, some walk in without introducing them selfs. I wonder if they believe in the greeting the visitors and patient. I would not recommend this place to any cancer patients as my wife treated here. If I could I would score our stay as -5.
