They treated my one son a year ago with 3rd degree finger burns. They were awesome! Very prompt and professional. They put medicine on the burns covered the burns and gave him pain meds for relief. He went back two weeks later and they redid his bandages. His burns healed within a month. I (the mom) am very pleased that you took such good care of my son.☺ Sincerely, Carol Schacherer

Seriously the WORST service and waste of time. Had a nurse come in. She drew blood then left. Didn't tell me they would be giving me an IV. Another nurse came in to start my IV. I waited almost 2 hours for the doctor to come in. Told her what was going on. She basically heard NOTHING I said except one symptom. I sat there for over 4 hours (there was hardly anyone there, so they werent busy) then I'm sent home and diagnosed with something that ISNT EVEN WHAT I WENT FOR. The doctor said she was going to REFER me to a GI. When I was discharged they said for me to contact the specialist. So now I get to go home to continue to feel horrible. It was a complete waste of time. I probably would have had better luck at the University.

My wife and I were very impressed with the Mercy Iowa City emergency room staff. We've never dealt with such a nice bunch of people in a hospital. They were friendly, informative and very kind. Ideally, we won't end up in the emergency room again. If the need arises, I would feel much more comfortable going here.

This hospital is very underrated. It's often compared to a larger hospital here in Iowa City that's supposedly the best around. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you want to be patted on the head and told "you ARE 80 years and it's probably something you're going to have to live with, " go the hospital on the west side of town. Mercy's doctors and nurses, for the most part, are a lot more caring and will try to solve the issues you are being seen for. AND you don't have to have your surgery done by a student.

This is one the best hospitals i have ever been in. I was in and out in under 4 hrs in the ER. The RN Joellen and the Student Nurse Taylor Dodd were AMAZING!! They were super easy to talk to in explaining what was going on and they made sure I had everything I needed to feel comfortable. And the DR I had, Naomi Whalen was just as amazing! She didnt blow me off, she took me seriously and actually cared about finding the cause of my problems. Great ER. And Great staff.

The ONLY reason this is a 2 star and not a negative number is because the care received at Mercy is fantastic. The doctors are amazing, and Mercy is in fact my go to for medical. So , NOT a review of doctors and care - but rather of their billing department and lack of ease in trying to pay and get a receipt to submit to insurance or HSA. I've tried calling 4 times today to just get this number which they call an ID number which is needed to sign up for their online pay. I tell who ever I am speaking with I want to pay online to get the receipt in order to submit to HSA. They try very hard to get me to pay over the phone - to the point of one of the women was so insistent I ended up hanging up on her. On the last call, I was passed to 4 different departments before I got to someone who could help. She's walking me through how to pay online - and I'm taken to a screen which just asks for payment information. She told me that they are working on their system, so for now, they try their best to match up the amount with the patients name - so, if you're feeling generous, you could go pay someone else's bill if you'd like. But back to the issue of the receipt - this does not provide ANY form of receipt. Just that I paid a certain dollar amount. So I ask what my other options are - she says that she could email me a receipt of I pay over the phone (again, not sure why they are so keen on the over the phone payments). I then ask how the itemized receipt would get to me - she then back tracks and says either through the mail or by fax. I then ask why she can't email - when she said she could before. She tells me because it's not secure. So my only other option is to go in person and pay. Only issue is I have a day job. They're a 24/7 operation that has a billing department that's there from 8-4 M-F. No Saturday options. I know this may seem petty - but I need a receipt. I have an HSA account to help pay medical bills. I have to provide proof that it was indeed medical. Sadly, just paying a hopsital doesn't shout that to the insurance company - therefore I need this little piece of paper that seems impossible to get. If the bill was 20-50 bucks, sure, what ever. But for a hefty 1000-1500 hospital bill if I am unable to provide proof it was indeed medically necessary, I will be required to pay out of pocket - which I'm not wanting to do. You'd think being in the medical industry and dealing with insurance and HSA and HRAs, they'd know this. But would rather make it quite difficult to obtain the needed information to submit claims

Went to the ER twice this week with horrible back pain. Something wrong with either a disc or vertebrae. The first time, my pain was horrible and all they did was give me pain meds, didn't try to figure out what was wrong. This morning, I was treated by a very rude nurse (who, last week, I saw a patient yelling at her for being rude) and a doctor who didn't believe I was in as much pain as I said I was because "She flinched and I barely touched her." Horrible service and I'll never be coming back to the Iowa City Mercy hospital again.

Dr Mogassbi in endocrinology is great and has good bedside manner

If I could rate this any lower I would. I was seen in the E.R. last year after a car accident (which was not my fault). They billed the incorrect insurance (not billing the car insurance) and then placed the bill in collections with a terrible collections agency. This was escalated further. It took multiple calls to some where not in the hospital where I was told they had sent the bill to the car insurance (which they hadn't), and for me to finally do their billing departments job and get the bill to insurance. I am now having to pay legal fees for a bill that was never sent by them. Would not recommend them to anyone.

I split my left ring finger in half while operating a tree planter. Sure I was only 6 and had no business planting trees. But hey Mercy was there to fix me up in a snap. Last thing I remember was my finger going towards a bowl of clear liquid. Out go the lights.

Absolute rudest and most uncaring staff ever! Will never go there and pulling my friend out today! Not an ounce of being professional there! Do not take your family here for care.

These dr. And nurses have saved my mom's life more then once over the past year... I say God Bless You All there at the hospital you all have taken very good care of her. From the day I brought her into the ER to the ICU to the 3rd floor nurses and Dr. God bless you all. ...thank you Sue Davis ( Pat Gode)

Gerhild Krapf

I cannot express my appreciation adequately for the extremely friendly and kind help I received this weekend when I went to the ER--from the receptionist to the intake person, to the physician, and the nurse who followed-up....light-hearted humor, good and interested listening, and excellent and prompt resolution of my problem...and no waiting! (Which of course was just a Cosmic accident)....and when I returned, having forgotten my billfold, the staff were already trying call me to alert me to my error, and immediately produced the lost article for me. I am beyond impressed!

I had both of my knee replacements done at Mercy, the 1st in April 2015, the other December 2015. I love the hospital and found all but 1 nurse friendly, helpful, caring, yet professional. As a nurse myself I would expect better from the male nurse who looked at me before removing a drain, that was placed in my knee, and said, "Oh you know this isn't going to hurt.". Still though, Mercy is the best.

These people saved my mom from dying of pneumonia, great people and staff.

The worst place I’ve ever had the displeasure of staying . I had surgery and the nurses refused to help me in and out of bed because I could do it on my own, they would get irritated if I called them. If they did come they would have a bad attitude, or they would take a long time. I asked for a wheel chair to leave the hospital and I waited 2 hours, not chair was brought to me so I walked out with the help of my mother Never want to stay here again, the nurses are terrible. If you don’t wanna do your job then don’t work as a nurse. They expect you to do everything on your own, like excuse me, I just got my stomach it open. Unhelpful, unattractive, under staffed and simply rude

Maddy Bemus

Extremely rude and dismissive staff

Awesome facility and staff! TOP NOTCH patient treatment!

Terrible rude nurses and doctors. Treated me poorly almost to the extent of mocking me for my Injury and implying I was just trying to score pain medication.

huge phobia of doctors. went to er with my 3rd bartholin cyst drainage gone wrong, infection was spreading. after a few hours and some tests i was admitted and put in a room. 2 days later i had the surgery to solve the problem once and for all. i truly appreciate every single nurse, doctor, and specialist i came in contact with. they were so personable and professional. ER wait was short (less than 10 minutes on a sunday afternoon) and was recommended to come here rather than the U of I for that reason. extremely happy with the care that i received!

Mike Merulla

I was treated for my first (and hopefully, last) kidney stone Memorial Day. The pain was excruciating, but through it all, the Mercy staff was professional, caring and thoughtful I was able to go home that evening.

I can say I've been in hospital more than I like to get stiches, surgeries, and work related injury's. Most of those due to my lifestyle. The doctor who I will just say his 1st name Tim, was an absolute true, humble, kind, and funny man. I felt like I was on a TV series ,when most people, like me dislike hospitals! I hope all people run into more doctors like Tim.#thankyou

Shannon Swartzendruber

Worst service ever i have ever encountered. I came in in extreme pain and left the same way but thats okay by the head of the er. I highly recommend another hospital if you are in pain. Because I was discharged in the same pain I was in when I came in.

I never write reviews, but this really needs to be called out. I went to this ER because I have a very rare disease that can A. leave me blind B. make go into a coma and C. make me have kidney failure with the VERY high doses of Diamox I have to take. It is absolutely critical to get my kidneys tested since during that time I was on 3,500 ER Diamox EVERY DAY--this leads to kidney failure and kidney stones! I'm only 25, and I found it absolutely astonishing that the doctor I went to was beyond full of himself. 1. We go into the ER and say I need a blood test and perhaps a CT for my kidneys (they were hurting for weeks). I was moving from Indiana to Iowa during the time my kidneys were acting up, so I wasn't able to establish care in Iowa yet (I called University of Iowa weeks before, and it was a huge wait to get into a doctor). So, I went to Mercy because my kidneys were in so much pain. 2. The doctor was beyond rude, and then proceeded to tell us that he specializes in my very rare disease (a disease which only a handful of Neuro-Ophthalmologists actually specialize in), because he did research on high altitude sickness and taking Diamox. Did he fail to realize these people with high attitude problems are only on 500 mg of Diamox a day at max? While I was on 3,5000 a day FOR THE LAST 6 MONTHS! 3. Turned out, that so far, nothing is wrong my kidneys, but instead of a CT, he ordered a ultrasound. I am now probably going to have to get a CT as my kidneys are always acting up because my pills I take are TOXIC. I also had low potassium, the doctor LAUGHED at this and said it was " a banana low" did he know the dose of potassium I was taking to keep it up to that level and it was still low? Turns out, I had severe potassium deficiency in the past and future. It's nothing to laugh about. Yet, this doctor didn't think my problems were a big deal. Here's the thing that REALLY ticked me off. We paid over 2,700 for COBRA. My insurance paid for only half of this Mercy visit, which was 2,437.80. I called my insurance company thinking it was their problem, but it turns out it was MERCY HOSPITAL that wouldn't forgive me from paying 1,196.58. I had to go to Ohio Wexner to actually get treated for my disease when I lived in Indiana, and they were nothing, but kind. They forgive these bills because someone with my disease has health bills up to their neck. How can Ohio Wexner have so much more mercy for people who are FIGHTING to survive than this Mercy hospital itself? We filed a petition to have Mercy at least pay for some of this 1,196.58, and they REFUSED to pay ANY OF IT. So, thank you Mercy hospital, for having no mercy or compassion at all. So, yes, every month I am stuck with endless lab work (which costs money), endless referrals to specialists and doctor visits (which costs money), my Diamox cost per month which is over $600, my sleep study (which costs a lot), , and during that time I was also FLYING to Ohio every MONTH to get proper care so I didn't go blind from this disease before I could get my care switched to a NO in Iowa...do you know how much those trips to save my eyes cost us per month? Please don't give your money to this hospital. They don't take your disease seriously, and if you're stuck with a bill while being especially sick--they don't have any mercy, and they will make you pay the whole thing and MORE (I'm sorry my insurance didn't cover everything, at least I came in with insurance...at least I paid almost 3,000 for insurance). I guess most of all.... Mercy Hospital, you have treated me like I am worthless, annoying, and not worth saving. This is the exact opposite anyone with a serious disease should be feeling. If Mercy just paid 50, 100, 200 of this bill that would helped us so much. I will only be doing business with University of Iowa from now on, I suggest you do too.

I was born here on April 21st, 1991! A good hospital which provides excellent care.

I just want to thank the Dr and nurses in the Emergency Room that cared for me when i went there. I am from Cedar Rapids and the care I received at Mercy Hospital on 1-2-2017 was great! They were thorough attentive patient and informative. I was pretty scared when i went in and they made me feel confident that i would OK. Even made sure i was comfortable while waiting for tests.

The best & most caring and helpful hospital. The hospital you will want to choose. We've had 3 successful surgeries and wonderful doctors. Can't say enough good things about this wonderful hospital and all the nurses and staff.

I'm usually a big fan of the care I get from Mercy ER but this past weekend that was not the case. My nurse was fabulous but my doctor was judgmental and uncaring. I felt like my discomfort was completely ignored based off her personal judgments.
